Burning Bridges

Chapter 1

Vampires and Humans lived in harmony for a long time, humans providing food for the vampires while the vampires provided protection to the humans. The head of the vampires, Toshinori Yagi, and the Baron Yamato Aizawa, who had some kind of frienemy relationship, had a peace treaty. The vampires are allowed to attend parties from the humans, and the humans give them meat and other food they might need, they even let the vampires drink from them sometimes. Some Vampires and Humans even started to have families of their own, mostly they got children when the human was turned. Toshinori never cared much about a family, he never felt the need to have one. He watched a lot of his friends get married to humans, since a vampire falls in love once, and when the human agrees they turn them when they get married. If not than those two die the same day. Why it is that way, no one knew, not even the elders. Vampires and humans are similar in some ways, yet falling in love wasn't one of those ways. While Humans fall in and out of love over the course of their short life, a vampire loves the person of their affection forever and ever, through all the lifetimes. While Toshinori never felt love, he saw Yamato Aizawa fall in love and lose her, however, Aizawa wasn't alone. He had children, a son and a daughter, named Shota and Sakura. Toshinori heard people say the Aizawa girl was as beautiful as her mother and being as gentle as a sakura petal in the wind, hence her name. He never believed those rumours, until one day.

As fate would have it, Baron Aizawa held a birthday party for his daughter, wanting to find a husband for her. She was turning 16, the perfect age to get married in his opinion. Since the vampires are invited to join parties of the humans, Toshinori wanted to socialize. He dressed up, took his cane and made his way to the party. Toshinori didn't really care, he just needed to keep up appearance. He actually hated those parties, but to keep up the peace, he had to attend.

When he showed up, the party was already going. Toshinori was looking for Aizawa, to thank him for the invitation. Since vampires need to get invited into a house, so parties like this are always held outside.

"I'm glad you could make it, Yagi.", Toshinori heard the familiar voice, so he turned around with a smile. The man in front of him was followed by another man and a young woman. While the young man looked like a carbon copy of Baron Yamato Aizawa, the woman looked like an exact copy of her mother. Toshinori admitted that Aizawa's wife was beautiful, but something about the daughter was different.

"I wouldn't miss a party like this, my dear friend.", Toshinori answered with a bow and a smile. The woman hid behind her father and brother. The brother just looked at the vampire, studying him.

"You are way too old to ask for my sister's hand in marriage. Besides, a vampire and a human shouldn't be together, it's illogical. A human is just a spec in a vampire's lifespan.", the brother said, and was quickly send away by his father.

"I'm not mad at your son, Yamato. He is right, a human's lifespan is just an inkling in the lifespan of a vampire. I don't blame him for this assessment.", Toshinori just smiled, unknowingly showing his fangs to her, causing the young woman to hide behind her father more. Yamato chuckled and introduced her to his frienemy.

"Toshinori Yagi, this is my daughter, Sakura Aizawa. Sakura, this is Toshinori Yagi, he is the head of the vampires.", Yamato moved her in front of him. Being a shy girl who learned that vampires are bad, she was a bit concerned. Toshinori just smiled, took her hand and placed a kiss on it. The scent of her skin made his unbeating heart leap. She smelled of roses, ink, paper and grass, not an unusual combination. The grass was an unusual addition though.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sakura Aizawa.", he said. Sakura just smiled, made a curtsy and replied: "The pleasure is mine, Sir."

Toshinori let go of her hand and Sakura put it down, looking at her feet. She excused herself and walked away, looking for her brother or someone else who she could trust. It wasn't that she wanted to be rude, she just wasn't into starting a conversation with the head vampire. Besides, this party had another reason than just her birthday and engagement, her father wanted to introduce a new law for the vampires and humans; a law that would change their harmonious coexistence. Why her dad wanted this law to be implemented was beyond her. It wasn't that her mother was killed by one, no she died due to natural causes. Her mother, Hikari Aizawa, was sick when she died. Her father blamed the vampires since they can't get sick, they may feel sick when they fall in love, but that's it. Sakura would never tell her father or brother, but she was fascinated and scared of vampires. They were beautiful creatures, capable and willing to kill. When she found her brother he was talking to the vampire-hunter: Kan Sekijiro, a man calling himself 'Vlad King', as some kind of warning for the creatures of the night.

"Miss Aizawa, it is nice to finally meet you in person. I have heard only good things about you.", he said, smiling, taking her hand and placing a kiss on it with a bow.

"He will be a far better husband than any vampire would be.", Shota exclaimed. Sakura raised an eyebrow at her brother.

"What gave you the idea that I wanted to marry a vampire? We are the Baron's children, Shota, Yagi just has to keep up appearance.", Sakura stated towards her brother. Kan just smiled and said: "Well, I'd love to be your husband."

Sakura just shrugged. He would be the most logical choice as a husband.

Meanwhile, Yagi and Aizawa were talking about Sakura.

"She is a smart young woman, Aizawa. Very well raised.", Toshinori praised Baron Aizawa for his daughter. Yamato chuckled, giving Toshinori a whiskey.

"Well, she is her father's daughter. But there are not many men that want a smart woman, they mostly care about their woman being pretty.", he sighed. Men want pretty women, smart ones aren't good in men's eyes: A smart woman wasn't well liked in society. Toshinori liked smart women, he liked it when they talked about stuff they enjoy with a twinkle in their eyes, it made him happy.

"I enjoy the company of a smart woman, they are way more fun to talk to than a woman that doesn't know anything. I'd marry your daughter on the spot.", he smiled, his cane in one hand and the other on his back.

"As if I would let you, Toshinori Yagi. It would be against the law.", Yamato smiled as well, a sheepish, almost evil smile.

"What?" Toshinori was confused. That was the first time he had heard of such a law. Baron Aizawa just chuckled, called his children to his side and moved to the center of the crowd, followed by his two kids.

"Attention everyone! This party is not only my precious daughter's 16th birthday celebration, I gathered the whole village here to announce a new law that I will implement starting tonight. We may have a peace treaty with the vampires that live in the mountains surrounding the village, but that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. Starting tonight, vampires and humans are prohibited to enter a romantic relationship. If they are caught, the penalty will be death!", Baron Aizawa explained, leaving half the people speechless and the other half in cheers. Toshinori was angry and wanted to step up and punch the Baron, but Sakura already interfered.

"Wait, you said this law would help everyone. How is it helping the vampires? Did you forget that they keep us save from bandits?", she asked her father, who just shrugged it off and left her standng there.

"Aizawa, a word!", Toshinori said, clearly agitated. Yamato excused himself from a group of people and walked to the vampire. Clearly the baron wasn't at all concerned about the new law he implemented and not at all concerned about how the relationship with the vampires would be affected.

"Yagi, what is it you want to talk about?", he asked with a grin on his face. Toshinori pinned him against the nearest wall with his cane. To say Toshinori was furious was an understatement, this law felt like Baron Yamato Aizawa didn't even care about the whole arrangement anymore.

"You've got to be kidding me, Aizawa! My people have never done anything to hurt you! We keep your village safe! If you wanted to change the subject of the peace treaty, you could've just told me!", he almost yelled in the human's face, who just put the cane down, smiling in a sheepish way.

"The law is the law, there are reasons for laws to be implemented.", he said before he walked away, leaving the vampire in his rage. As to not ruin the mood, Toshinori left the party in a fury.

"How was the party?", one of the other vampires asked. Toshinori just grunted and growled. He usually was very calm, but this stupid law made him angry.

"It started out all right, I met the most beautiful woman in the world, but then her stupid father had to ruin everything!", he replied to his friend. The other vampire was a bit confused as to how and why.

"I just had to fall for the Baron's daughter, didn't I? And then he also implements this stupid law that literally kills vampires courting humans and vice versa.", Toshi explained.

"You fell in love with the Baron's daughter? Are you insane? He'd rather have his daughter taken by bandits than allow you to marry her, Toshi!", the friend said. Toshinori was aware of that fact, acutely aware in fact.

"Tell me something I don't already know, Hizashi!", he kinda snapped at his friend, who didn't really mind. He knew his friend was frustrated, mostly at himself.

"Maybe a good night's rest and a nice bath will help you calm down, Toshi.", Hizashi suggested. Toshinori looked at him and smiled.

"You know just how to calm me down, my friend.", he answered and made his way to his chambers.
