TW:WW2

Have fun with one the strangest battles in history

May 5th,1945:

America sat on a bench and talked with a few fellow soldiers. They just arrived in Brixental (Austria) a few minuets ago and were taking a small break. He was eating one of his rations as they heared a sudden motor sound in the distance. It sounded like a kind of vehicle nothing special, really. It could just be another truck or so.

America continued to eat and joke to his comrades about the confused german soldier. America was hiding in a small cottage and saw him looking at his sketch of Kileroy. America didn't shoot him because he wanted to see his reaction. The Soldier called over a few of his comrades. Now all four looked at his skatch confused. "Was bedeutet 'Kilroy was here'? Kann einer von euch Englisch?" One of them said.

"Hey Alfred! What's that?!" one of his men named Gary called out. America and Gary always ate together, they were very much friends at this point. The vehicle was driving right to their direction. America couldn't make out what kind but it difinitely didn't look american. It was getting closer and he could start to recognize the fetures of a Kuberwagen and a white flag being held out as sign of surrender. "Dude, it's a german car... Wait WHAT!"

We all took our rifles and quickly surrounded the car. Two Germans sat in the car one holding the white flag the other was the driver. America and his comrades made both of them get out of the car and kneel at gunpoint. Captain John C.'jack'Lee Jr. walked up to both men. One of them turned out to be Major Joseph Gangle. He slowly handed captain Lee a letter. Lee opened it and read it out loud. It said that a castle full of VIP french prisoners were threatened by the Waffen-SS sneaking around in the forest surrounding castle itter. That the french were scared that the SS was planing on taking back the castle and killing all of them.

Gangle and Lee talked for a good minute. It really suprised America that Lee even listened to that guy. Lee suddently took the telephone and seemed to talk to someone for a long time. Gangle explained to the other german what is going to happen in german. After he hung up Captain Lee turned around and said with great confidence" Get ready we're going on a rescue mission!" Many were a bit confused that their captain just trusted Gangle but got ready anyway.

They started marching. The tank of Lee called jenny took the leed. The other six tanks were close behind. They were following the road leading out of the vilage. The houses on the side had put white or austrian flags hanging outside the windows. On some flags and houses were bullet holes from the SS. They shoot at every house wich had flags of surrender hanging in the outside.

They found the road leading out of the village and followed it for about an hour. Now they had to cross a wodden bridge. The first four tanks made it across but then the bridge collapsed. So the other three had to stay behind. Lee told them to find another way. The four tanks that made it continiued to march their way to the castle. About a few minuets later they arrived at a village. They were greeted with they sight of around 15 Wehrmacht soldiers watching over the austrians. They seemed released when they saw the American tanks. After the tanks came to stop and a quick exchange between Gangle and Lee they decided that they're going to take a small brake because they were already marching for a few hours.

"America, you're here?" America turned around to see an exhausted Austria staring at him. He walked over to him. "Yeah dude, how ya doing?" He took his water bottle and started to drink. "I'm fine, just suprised." America handed tthe bottle to Austria. "mmh me too. Want some?" Austria gladly accepted. "Hey, Alfred you know him?" Gary stood next to them. "Yeah, he's an old friend."America answered. Gary looked Austria up and down, then smiled and started having conversasion with Austria.

America watched as the german officer Gangle walked over to the group of Wehrmacht soldiers and explaining to them whats going to happen.

One of them cought America's eye. He somewhat stood out. His hair a little bit paler, his posture a little bit straighter and most importantly he looked too familiar to America's liking. He walked over to get a better look at the german. The three other Wehrmacht soldiers he was talking with looked at him questioningly. "Ludwig weißt du wer das ist?" The german turned around and Americas apprehension was true. Infront of America stood no other than Germany.

America took Germany by his arm and pulled him between two old houses. He pinned him to the wall. "Dude, what are you doing here?!" Germany looked shooked but his voice was firm. "I could ask the same. I thought you were a pilot?" They wispered so no one heared their conversasion. "That's none of your buisness! How ya still here?!" America was more or less hissing now. "What do you mean? Why shouldn'd I? What's wrong with you?" Germany was really confused by America's behavior. America took a good deep breath and proceeded. "Sorry, dude. I just thought that your 'boss' would hold you by his side." Germany got out of America's grasp and took a few steps back. "Why should he. He's dead."

"Hurry up we go on." Gary was running towards them to lead them back to the tanks. Both quickly made their way to their comrades. They were told that just three of the tanks were going to move on the other one is staying behinde to protect the austians if the SS desides to show up and try to take the village back.

They followed a track throught the forest and for a wile everything was going according to plan until they came across a bridge. A few SS soldiers were putting up street barriers to stop them. They noticed them and stared at them for a few seconds. One of them lifted up his rifle and shot. As response they shot back but didn't hit them. All of them dashed off deep into the forest.

They looked after then but couldn't spot them anymore, so they just proceeded to get across the bridge. The besotten Jenny was the first to go but after her the bridge also collapsed. The other two tanks couldn't get across the trench and they decided that they are going to look for another way to the castle. The one that made it across the bridge continued their journey up the hill to the castle.

They walked for a long time it was now late afternoon and the sun was setting. America walked up to Germany and Austria. "Did you guys hear that?" Both look at him. "No, what did you hear?" Germany was confused. America looked around anxiously. "I heared something moving behind the trees." Now all three looked around. They were surrounded by trees and knowing that the SS is sneaking around here doesn't make them feel any safer. "I don't think here is something America. Even if were already there." Austria somehow was the calmest of them. America looked forward and he could already see the gate.

They arrived at the gate and were greeted by another suprise. With the french prisoners stood a single SS soldier. All stared in compled shook but Lee explained everything. The man turned out to be SS-Haubtsturmführer Kurt-Siegfried Schrader. He turned his back to the Nazis a long time ago and agreed to protect the prisoners because one of them was wounded.

The VIP prisoners didn't seemed to be very happy with their rescue group. Gangle, Lee and Schrader talked for a few seconds and then ordered the men to take posisions around the castle and Jenny was posisioned infront of the main gate. The germans were asked to wear a black cloth around their arm to distinguish them from the SS in battle.

America was posisioned at the seconed floor with Gary and two Wehrmacht soldiers. One was named Oscar. He was brown haired and in his early twentys. The second one was Germany. They had direct view over the entrance. Jenny was right below them.

They spent most of their time setting everything up at the windows and talking with each other. Luckely Oscar could speak english quite well. Oscar wasn't german he was austrian.

In the meantime the Sun had almost compleatly set and the locusts sang loudly. America looked out of a window. He looked outside to see a dark figur running into the forest.

"Yeah, Helga is the -shoots fired and glass shattered- Was zum!"Oscar yelled out in shock. All four jumped up and ran up to their posisions. The floor under them already opened fire. The shoots came out of the forest. They fired back but they didn't knew were the shoots came from exactly. The shoots most likely came from right behind the first few tree lines. Both sides continiued to fire for a few minuets then it stopped. Except the broken window and a few bullet holes in the walls nothing was destroyed or hit.

"What was that?"Gary said looking confused out of the broken window. All four were more or less confused. It seemed like they(SS) haven't even tried to hit anything. No real offensive was made. "I don't think this is over." Oscar stated anxiusly. "They'll come again." The four of them exchanged looks and slowly settled down on the floor.

"Does one of you know who the guy was?" America asked. This got the three others attantion. "What guy?" The three looked confused over to America. "A guy was running away from the castle. Thought you saw him too."

They fell silent for the rest of the night. Thinking about all kinds of things. The first one to speak up again was Oscar. "Was passiert wenn alles vorbei ist?" His question was directed to Germany. "Weiß nicht. Wartet jemand auf dich?" They both were worried about their futures. The knowladge that the war will be over soon was making them them quite nervous. "Helga und ich wollen Heiraten wenn ich wieder komme. Hab ich dir eigentlich schon meine Tochter gezeigt?" Germany shook his head.

Oscars eyes lit up and he reached into his breast pocked. He pulled out a small picture of a little girl, not older than three. She had a flower crown on her head and she hugged a large berhardiner. He pulled out another picture. On this one was a Woman looking loving at the buddle of blankets in her arms. In her arms she held her baby tight to her chest. Next to the Woman sat a small puppy. The puppy looked up to the loving mother and child.

"Sie ist süß. Wie alt ist sie jetzt?" Germany took the small picture out of his hands to get a better look at it. "Ich hab ihren vierten Geburtstag verpasst." He looked at the pictures so full of love but also so sad. "Sie hat mir einen Brief geschrieben aber der ist verbrannt."

"What are you two talking about?" Gary took the picture out of Germany's hands. "Is this your daugther? She's cute." He looked at Germany. "No, no. It's his." He pointet at Oscar still looking at his soon to be wife. "Hey." He sat down next to him."Your daughter is cute." He looked down at the other picture. "This your Wife?" Both smiled at each other. "She's my Girlfriend. Is someone waiting for you?" Now Gary pulled out a picture. "That's my little brother. He's turning eleven next month. I really hope that i will be back then." The picture showed a little boy proudly holding his first backback and Schoolbooks. He smiled brightly in the picture. "He has grown so much."

America joined them and also took a look at the pictures. "They're both cute but i got a whale waiting for me." He stated jokingly. They started laughting and joking around.

The rest of the night was peaceful. As the sun started to rise the birds started to sing. The castle and the surrounding forest were quiet.

The three of the four had fallen asleep. The only one already awake was Germany he was sitting at the broken window and overlooked the forest. Nothing moved. It was peaceful untill...

A loud bang and the wall was shaking. The ones sleeping were awake in a heartbeat. They ran to the windows and took their weapons. They looked outside and two 8,8cm anti tank guns stood at the tree line. The Waffen-SS had expanded upto 200 men. The main battle had begun.

The anti-tank guns fired at the castle walls destroying them. The Windows shattered by mashinegun fire. The SS was slowly creeping out the forest. They heard a loud bang from below and a cloud out of smoke blew into the room. Jenny was hit and destroyed by a Anti-tank gun. Mashineguns fired. The SS was grawling near the castle. The outer walls of the castle were damaged. They had to fall back deeper into the castle. The french prisoners took their own guns to defend themselves. The fire from the SS just intensefied. They got closer and closer no metter what they did. Without the support from jenny's mashinegun nothing stopped them from entering the castle. After three hours Ammunition was slowly running out .

A second hit pierced right through their wall and destroyed it compleadly. It left a big hole with no place to take cover. The wooden beams were on fire. One crashed down almost hitting Oscar's head. All windows shattered. The shards cutting the faces of the four standing in the room. They were running low on ammunition. They had to get out.

Behind them more shoots were fired. As they almost got out of the room a bullet hit Gary in the shoulder. He fell on the ground blood was dripping to the ground. Gary held his shoulder still laying velnurable on the ground. Oscar grabbed him and quickly pulled him into the next room. Luckily a medic was near by and took care of him. Meanwhile the other three made their way up to the battlements. They stormed as fast as possible up the stairs. All three stumpled through the door.

Looking for cover they discovered the dead body of Gangle. He was shoot in the head.

They had no time to murn over him because the SS was already at the gate. Without ammo and many soldiers beeing wounded they were compleadly at their mercy. And from the looks of it these man didn't have any mercy.

Finally after of fighting the SS was almost inside the castle. The VIP prisoners were brought deep inside the castle. Except the once that wanted to fight with them. It seemed hopeless.

Suddently another tank rolled out of the forest. A relief force arrived. They attacked the SS from behind. After that the battle was quickly over leaving the SS compleadly defeaded. Many surrendered.

America was reliefed that it was finally over. He walked over to the room were the wounded were treated. Already waiting next to Gary were Germany and Oscar.

"So, what now?" Oscar asked. "Well i think we'll have to take you prisoner. But i think that's better than leave you here." America answered.

Befor you say anything this story really happened. Well not the names obviously. (Exept Lee and Gangle)The prisoners weren't just french. There were also some czech prisoners. The french Tennis Player Jean Borotrs brought the relief forces to the forest. Gangle really died.

I'm not good at explaining. You should really watch some YouTube videos about it it's really interesting. Or listing to the song from Sabaton. Maybe read about it too.

I'm not trying to justify the actions of the Wehrmacht nor am i saying that the Wehrmacht was 'clean'. I just thought that it maybe interest you.
