I awoke suddenly. There was a pounding sensation in my head. And then with a clear ping sound, that seemed to come from both everywhere and nowhere the pounding ceased, and a blue screen appeared right in front of me.

Name: John Doe

Age: 11

Money: £0 0p

Wizard Money: 0G 0s 0k

I reached my hand out in an attempt to touch the screen, only for the screen to ripple slightly in my hand to go right through it like a hologram.

'Wait hang on… Wizard Money? Measured in something beginning with G s and k? That sounds like-'

Ping!

Legendary quest unlocked!

A smaller box appeared below that one:

Legendary quests are unique, non repeatable quests which vastly affect yourself, other people around you, and in some (most) cases, the fate of the entire world.

Below that was a third box:

Legendary Quest: The Chosen One

Something terrible has happened to Harry Potter! You are the only hope the wizarding world has left to stop Voldemort!

Objective:?

Rewards: 3,000,/000 xp, ?, ?

Failure: Death.

Accept?

Yes/No

Before I could react the yes button was automatically pressed.

'Makes sense I suppose. It wouldn't be good game design if I was able to accidentally ruin the main quest by accident'

I idly swiped away the rest of the notifications half-heartedly. So I was in Harry Potter somehow? But… How? I knew all about Harry Potter of course. I'd both read the books and seen the films many times, but last I checked the Harry Potter films weren't real.

I sat back on the bed, or rather, what seemed to be a broken bed frame with a lumpy mattress lain across it. The only "sheet" provided was a thin rag. It had more in common with a dish towel than a proper duvet.

'I need to remember what happened before this.' I tried to think back to my past to who I was before I became "John Doe"... I remembered a lot of things. I could remember the Harry Potter series, all the video games I used to play, the videos I watched on YouTube… Even the music I liked! But… I still had no idea who I was. I couldn't remember my name. I couldn't remember what I looked like. 'Do I even remember my family?' I thought back as hard as I could. I got the feeling I had a mum and dad… Maybe some siblings too?

New Legendary Quest!

Legendary Quest: Know thy Blood

Objective: discover who you are!

Reward: inner peace… and £2,500

Failure: constant feeling of existential dread.

Accept?

Yes/no

I reached out to tap yes but stopped halfway. Reaching out with my mind this time, I imagined selecting the yes button. Instantly the prompt disappeared and a "Quest Accepted" box appeared.

It was then that I was struck by a realisation.

'SINCE WHEN DID I HAVE THE GAMER POWER?'

I shoot up out of my sitting position so quickly my head slams against the (incredibly low) ceiling with a loud bang!

-10hp!

HP system unlocked!

Hp:(33/50) (-)

'Actually where even am I? The whole place is pitch-black.'

I hear a noise from the floor above me, like a light switch being flicked on. Then huge, stomping footsteps. I idly lift my hands up to the ceiling, curious to see why it's so low.

'What are those weird ridges?'

The stomping footsteps get louder, sounding almost directly above me. Dust falls down into my hair with every STOMP, making me cough.

'Huh, it's almost like those footsteps are descending… stairs…'

The footsteps halt outside somewhere.

'Cupboard under the stairs… Magical world… Someone who is clearly massive fat-ass walking towards me… No. No. Nonononono.'

The door to the cupboard swung open and I was confronted by the almost ridiculously fat face of none other than Vernon fucking Dursley!

"Boy! What do you think you're doing making all that racket!? Some of us are trying to sleep!" The jowls of fat on his face shiver ridiculously as he screams and I have to fight the urge to laugh.

"Sorry uncle Vernon I just… bumped my head." I try my best at acting shame-faced and hanging my head. Judging by the fact no acting skill appears, (and Vernon's ever reddening face) I was less than successful.

A big meaty hand scoops me around the neck and drags me out. "Well since you're up you can just make Petunia and I breakfast! I have a big meeting at work today and Petunia is having some guests over so we're getting up early."

Goddamnit! Could I just get a moment to collect my thoughts please? I've had nothing but surprise after surprise laid upon me since coming here. I'd like some time to digest it all!

Judging by the first rays of light I can see from out the nearby kitchen window, I surmise it to be roughly 6:30am. That's barely even early for the average working person.

As my body gets sorted taking out ingredients for breakfast - fatty bacon and egg on toast for Vernon, and scrambled egg and toast for Petunia - my mind is busy at work.

'So, I'm in the Harry potter universe, in the body of Harry Potter, although, according to that legendary quest I'm not actually him… and I have the power of the gamer - what should I do next?'

To me, the answer was obvious. Do the one thing gamer systems were meant for: get stronger. Sure, perhaps the average person would feel broken-hearted about being removed from their world and everyone they loved (and I wasn't exactly okay with it.) But I couldn't even remember my family, which… made it a lot harder to miss them.

As I flipped the bacon over in the pan, I thought about how I could get stronger. I'd read gamer fanfictions before so the obvious answer was by killing monsters and doing quests. I would get so strong that even Voldemort was no threat to me.

But first I needed to see just exactly what I was working with. "Stats." I whispered, the sizzling of the bacon fat masking my words.

A blue screen popped up in front of me.

"Harry Potter"

HP:33/50 (-)

MP:0/0

XP:10/250

STR: 2 (-)

END: 3 (-)

AGI: 5 (-)

CHA: 2 (+)

WIS: 2 (-)

INT: 3 (-)

LUC: 10

Woah. My stats were… Terrible to say the least. Except for my luck, which I suppose made sense considering who I was. How come I had no magic? I was Harry Potter, a wizard! I should have at least some MP! Ah, but I wasn't Harry Potter, just his body. And what were those minuses? Did I have some kind of debuff?

"Status effects." I whispered as I scrambled some eggs.

STATUS EFFECTS:

Malnourished: You are malnourished! -2 to every physical stat.

Blood ward drain: You're being drained to power a blood ward! -2 to every mental stat.

Adorable: you're a small child! +1 to charisma.

'I assume my charisma's so low because Harry never got to go out with other kids and socialise.'

Mundane-born: Your soul is from a world without magic and can't process it! Mana capped at 0.

That last one was a serious problem. How was I going to go to Hogwarts if I didn't have magic? I was fairly sure malnourished would be fixed by sleeping, and the blood ward drain would fix itself when I left the dursleys.

New Quest:

This is Just Like Magic!

Objective: enter your first Natural Dungeon

Reward: Magic! And 500xp.

A new quest. Hmmm this would give me two levels if I completed it! Well, Vernon will be out of the house today, and since Petunia is going to have guests over, maybe I can persuade her to give me some money so I can try to look for a dungeon?

Finished with breakfast I plate the meals up and deliver them to the table just in time for a ping to sound out.

New skill:

Cooking: level 2

Your food tastes about average.

+2% to the bonuses of food you make.

I narrow my eyes at Petunia's scrambled egg and think 'Observe'

Ping!

Observe function requires mana!

'Damn. Guess I better work at getting that magic pronto.' Observe was an absolutely necessary skill, I couldn't do without it.

I was pushed roughly to the side (-2hp) by Vernon. He sat down at the table and I watched in horror as he lifted the entire plate up to his mouth, tilted it, and let the entire mass of greasy bacon and four whole slices of toast fall into his gaping maw.

'That is definitely inhuman.'

After he finished "eating" his breakfast he shuffled out the door and left, suitcase in hand to go to work.

I turned around to see Petunia coming up to the table as well. "Um, Aunt Petunia, where's Dudley?"

She snorted derisively. "Stupid boy. He went to stay with the Polkiss's last night."

I stepped a bit closer to her, this was my one chance. "Aunt Petunia, I was wondering, since you're having guests over, instead of staying in the house in my room would it be ok if I went outside on a walk?"

She hums slightly whilst chewing her food, acting like she's considering it, but I can tell she's going to deny me my request. If for no other reason than that she hates me.

"It would get me out of your hair…" I give one last attempt at persuading her.

"Oh, fine. Just be back in time to make us dinner, you hear?"

I smile widely. "Sure thing Aunt Petunia!"

Ping!

New skill:

Persuasion: LV 1

Grants an increased 1% chance of persuading your target.

As I leave the kitchen, my hand snatches out and takes the biggest chef's knife in the room, dropping it into my inventory.

I headed to the nearby park, the same one Harry is attacked by dementors in during the fifth book. I was looking for a Natural Dungeon, although… I had no idea what it would look like. I sat down on a nearby swing set as my legs began to get tired.

'Wait… is that what I think it is?'

On the ground near the swing set was a silver deathly hallows symbol, set into the asphalt of the park. I approach it and a pop-up appears.

Natural Dungeon: Grass Soldiers

Level: 2

Huh. I suppose grass soldiers make for a change from the usual giant rats or zombies.

I click yes to enter and everything turns white.

The world fades back into view in patches. First I can see the tall grass all around me, much taller than my small, malnourished eleven year old body. Then I can see the trees, they rise into the sky, far higher than any trees I've ever seen. The sky is bright blue without any trace of pollution, and there are two suns overhead. I'm definitely not on earth.

Knowing the gamer powers I don't even try to leave the dungeon. I'd just have got a pop up saying "you must defeat all enemies to continue." Or something like that.

I open my inventory and select the knife, it's firm weight drops into my hand. I drop low to the ground, crouching in the grass desperate for cover from possible assailants.

I hear a rustling behind me, I turn around to face it and I'm confronted with a strange creature. It comes up to my waist, and appears human-like in structure, the only difference is it's made of grass. It unsheathes what seems to be a spear but with a literal leaf tip.

'iIf only I had Observe. I could check these guys stats and what they drop. Oh well.'

I rush at the soldier. Intent on rendering his spear useless at such a short range. I get one stab, two stabs, three stabs at his stomach with the knife! He kicks me away and I fly off him, despite being made of grass these guys pack quite the punch. I land roughly (-5hp) and see him draw a shortsword with a leaf blade. I definitely don't want to be cut by it. I can't even tell how much damage I did to it… Maybe this version of the game will be kind of like Pokémon and I'll find out that physical attacks are entirely ineffective against grass type enemies.

The soldier rushes at me and swings down hard. I use my body's superior agility gained from years of running during Harry hunting and dodging blows from Dudley and his gang to dodge the swipe and then stab the creature in the head.

Critical hit!

Damage = 7x2=14!

All of the grass composing it's body started to rapidly degrade, leaving behind only a silvery pile of dust and a couple items.

'Sweet! My first loot!'

+15xp!

Ping!

Quest completed!

This is just like magic!

Reward: 500xp!

You have levelled up twice

I opened my character sheet and sure enough, there was a big, glowing "LEVEL UP" button. Pressing it I was confronted with this screen.

Levelling up allows you to increase your stats by +5 points each time. You have (10) points to spend.

Below was a list of my stats. Hmm my agility was definitely fine, I was fast enough to keep up with the soldier. My luck was my best stat, so no need to increase it. But my charisma… it was just terrible. Plus, when I actually get involved in Hogwarts I have big plans. I want to stop Draco from turning, Make Fred and George focus more so they get the most out of their education, get Snape to stop hating me (or rather, hating Harry) and that's just the first year!

With made up, I decide to dump all my stat points into charisma. Maybe I should have increased my intelligence so I could do my school homework better? But, on the other hand, with a high enough Charisma score I could make the teachers like me enough so they might look the other way.

After clicking the "accept" button, another screen popped up.

Perk Points:

Perks are gameplay modifiers that affect your abilities in a dramatic fashion. You earn one perk point every five levels. You have (1) perk point to spend:

Below was a list of perks, most of them were grayed out, if I had to guess, they probably had stat requirements or needed certain skills unlocked first. The ones I could purchase were:

Lucky son of a bitch!

Cost: 1

Requirement: 10 LUC

You're darn lucky! And as a result, your loot is increased by 50% in quality, with a 10% chance to sometimes gain double items!

Real men wear glasses!

Cost: 1

Requirement: have glasses equipped

Gain +3 strength as long as you have glasses equipped! What, did you think it'd make you smarter? That's a stereotype man!

Mana-Born!

Cost:1

Requirement: have the Mundane-Born status effect.

Gain power you could have never imagined in your previous life! Gain… Magic!

Waste not want not!

Cost: 1

Requirement: be malnourished.

Food never goes off as long as you cooked it. Increases cooking buffs by 100%

Born Athlete!

Cost: 1

Requirements: have one physical skill at 7 or more.

You were born to run! Or lift! Or uhh swim! You never feel tired when exercising and can keep going ad infinium.

I stared with wide eyes. Those were some pretty powerful perks. However… there was really only one choice. I would get my Hogwarts letter soon, probably tomorrow since I am eleven now. So I desperately needed magic. I clicked on the Mana-Born perk and accepted it.

You have gained mana! Your mana will increase by (+5) points every level until level 10. You can also increase it by putting points into INT, and it's regeneration can be increased by putting points into WIS!

I opened my stat sheet again.

"Harry Potter"

Lvl: 3

HP: 50/50

MP:10/10

XP:0/300

STR: 4

END: 5

AGI: 7

CHA: 12 (+)

WIS: 2 (-)

INT: 3 (-)

LUC: 10

Damn my stats look a lot better! I guess my level up must have restored my health AND cured me of my status effects! At least… the physical ones like my malnourishment, since my blood ward drain is still active.

With that levelling up done, I turn around, knife in hand to confront the pile of loot.

There's a small bottle with some fluid in it, a leaf spear like the soldier used, and what seems to be wristbands? Made out .

I attempt to use Observe on the bottle.

Ping!

New skill unlocked!

Observe lvl 1

Cost: 2 MP, Range: 5 meters.

'The mana cost is pretty high, but nothing unusable.'

Another window popped up.

Bottle of minor nature essence.

A thick, viscous fluid that provides a permanent +2 to agility and strength whilst within a forest.

'woah this is really good! Especially if all the monsters in this Dungeon can drop it! I gues smh high luck stat must have paid off.'

Next I observed the grass spear, finding that although it only had ten durability (although I wasn't sure how good or bad that was) it also did double the damage knife. So I decided to use it as weapon for now.

The wristbands were interesting. Observing them revealed the following:

Vine Wraparounds

Durability: 50/50

Damage Reduction:5

Effects: +5% critical damage

Those effects saw them immediately go onto . It fit perfectly.

I turned around and saw another grass soldier trying to sneak up on me. Between my increased agility and strength due to the potion, my more powerful weapon, and taking advantage of the +5% critical damage by stabbing it in the face, it died even quicker than the other one. Leaving behind another spear, which I tossed into , and a £5 note, which also made its way into my inventory.

I cracked my neck before running into the nearby forest. 'let the slaughter begin!'

About twenty enemies later, I had gained around £50, some "flammable tree sap", was halfway to my next level, and had gotten another set of wristbands. I tried equipping them as well and, even though they went over my arm, the game informed me that neither the damage resistance, nor the stat increases would stack.

I had just finished slaying the last monster I could find when I got a warning:

BOSS INCOMING

'Well, I was getting bored of the normal soldiers anyway.'

The earth at my feet split open as I jumped back, and out of the crack came a twisting and writhing monument of roots which slowly solidified, taking a vaguely humanoid shape. Green embers scattered the air around it and I realised where I had seen this before.

"Holy shit that's a spriggan from Skyrim!"

'Why the fuck did I say that out loud!?'

The creature twisted around to look at me and snarled as the green glow intensified. I cast Observe.

-2MP (5/10)

Minor Nature Nymph

LV: 12

Hp: 1200

MP:450

A minor nature spirit awoken by the raucous slaughter of her subjects. Wishes naught but death for you.

Rare loot: Timberwolf "egg"

'Shit! This thing's 4 times my level! Even with all , it'd still take me almost a hundred swings to kill it! And that's without factoring in the fact that it could probably kill me in one hit!'

Utilising my 3 INT I realise discretion is probably the better part of valour and decide to run away- I mean, tactically retreat!

The huge ball of glowing green energy which missed me by inches indicated that the Nature spirit clearly had other ideas. Ducking down more in case of further shots I ran for the treeline, hoping that I could use the extra cover to get some time to think.

I ducked behind a tree and frantically tried to think of a solution.

'Hmm. I can't just attack it with my spear… Something tells me a sneak attack would be just as useless. I need to think outside the box.'

BOOM!

The tree I was standing behind explodes in a wave of coruscating green energy. I fly forwards and roll multiple times when I hit the ground.

-15HP! (35/50)

Damn, even the after-blast from it's attack did almost a third of my HP in damage!

What if I- The Spriggan interrupts my thoughts by scything me with it's claws. I manage to lurch back, avoiding getting bisected by them, yet even then the Spriggan is much faster than me and extends its reach. Thin lines of pain scorch across my stomach as the very tips of the claws scratch across it.

I look down and see my stomach as a bloody mess, before a second later Gamer's Body activates and the visible damage disappears, instead being replaced by:

-20HP (15/50)

'Im going to die I'm going to die I'm going to- WAIT! The flammable tree sap!'

I cast my hand into my inventory and pull out two bottles of it. Ducking under another swing of the claws I throw one bottle against the Spriggan's head, shattering it on contact. I throw myself to the side and avoid a green ribbon of energy twice as tall as I am.

'Now all I need is something to light the fire. I don't have anything in my inventory so I'll need to hope that my magic can do something!'

(10/10)MP

I run towards the Spriggan while focusing my every thought on fire. I imagine the scent of the smoke, I remember the feeling of it that one time I burnt myself, I can feel the warmth of it all over my body and I try to force that feeling into my hand.

Ping!

New skill unlocked:

Flame touch!

Cover your hand in fire!

Deals (INT)/2 damage, has a chance to inflict burning.

Cost:8MP

(2/10)MP

I jump upwards, intent on lighting the oil on the Spriggan's head. However at the last moment I see that the spriggan was only giving me time to charge my attack so that It could charge one of its own. Pulsating green light builds in its eyes, surely to erupt in eye lasers. There's nothing I can do. I've already committed to the jump so I can't dodge.

More and more green sparks travel across the body to meet its eyes, the growing mass of embers turning from a light green shade into a much darker, acid green.

'That's ironic, it actually looks like the killing curse.'

It seems to take forever to charge up, my journey in the air seems similarly affected. what should have been a couple seconds worth of a jump seems to have stretched out into minutes of time as I stare death in the eyes like an old friend.

'Well, I don't plan on going on to the next great adventure just yet!'

The second bottle of oil appears in my hand and is thrown similarly against the creature's head. The impact causes it to rear back, the eye lasers detonating harmlessly into the sky, where they explode in a fiery ball of death instead.

My flame covered fist darts in and smashes against the creatures head.

CRITICAL HIT!

1.5*2 DAMAGE!

A ghastly screech is heard as the Spriggan erupts in purple fire. Burning both inside and out. It claws desperately at itself as green magic attempts to cull the flames ineffectually.

BURNING INFLICTED!

-100HP PER SECOND

It's only a couple more seconds before the creature stops moving entirely, it's eyes focus on me with such intensity it's almost like it's forgotten it's burning alive. It stares at me with eyes filled with hatred, whilst it's entire body begins to glow green.

Unfortunately for the Spriggan, I know what that means, I run for a couple of metres until I hear the explosion. Warm winds buffet my back but that's all.

+500XP!

Level up!

I turn around and see that the explosion succeeded in putting out the fire. However, there's no trace of the creature to be found except for some loot nearby.

I seem to have gained two bottles of nature essence but these ones look slightly bigger.

Moderate nature essence

Provides a permanent +3 to strength, endurance and agility whilst in a forest.

I drink one of them and notice my maximum health shoot up to 65 from 50, so since I gained 3 points to endurance, I guess that means each point of endurance increases max health by 5. I quickly drink the other potion and see my health shoot up to 80. Talk about a power up!

Also on the ground is a small sapling

Mana berry bush

This bush grows berries that give +50 mana. However, one berry takes a year to grow. The berries will not grow inside your inventory.

I immediately eat the berry and feel a slight tingle as the mana within me increases drastically from 10 to 60! I then shove the plant inside my inventory, maybe when I save Dobby I can have him take care of it for me?

The last item appears to be a crown formed from white wood.

False Crown (Epic)

Durability:INF

Damage Reduction: 0

Effects: Enables mana to be channeled through it, resulting in a -20% cost for spells. Cannot channel fire, necromancy or acid spells. +2 Charisma. Unnoticeable to all but the most powerful mages.

Worn by the dreaded Azhlar the Destructor when he went to meet with the Green Courts. They were so impressed with his power and mystique, so charmed by his words and his flattery, they didn't see his betrayal coming. The crown tried to warn them… But they couldn't see it. The crown refuses to channel fire, acid, or necromancy based spells due to its hatred of its creator, Azhlar.

Wow. That item was seriously powerful! And that backstory… was it real? Or just something made up by the game? I suppose it doesn't matter, considering I definitely couldn't fight this Azhlar as I am now.

It's a bit annoying that the crown won't work for my only spell to be honest, but I'll learn more soon enough.

I put the crown on, noticing that it yet again is perfectly fitted to my head. It was probably just my imagination but I thought for a second I could feel it vibrating slightly under my touch.

I open my stats menu to see where things currently stand:

"Harry Potter"

Lvl: 3

HP: 80/80 (+)

MP: 60/60

XP:0/300

STR: 12 (+)

END: 11 (+)

AGI: 15 (+)

CHA: 14 (+)

WIS: 2 (-)

INT: 3 (-)

LUC: 10

My strength, endurance and agility are still being boosted by the multiple nature essences, and my charisma has a +2 due to my False Crown. My mana is permanently increased due to the mana berry I ate, and my hp increased because my endurance increases a lot in the forest due to the aforementioned potions.

I click the glowing level up icon once again. Since I only levelled up once I only have 5 stat points to spend and no perk to choose, although I'll get one next level.

I decide it's probably best to increase my mental stats since they seem to be lagging behind. two points go into INT and three go into WIS, bringing both up to five.

Another pop-up appears:

Floor Cleared!

Would you like to leave?

Yes/no

I click yes and find myself once more standing on the asphalt at the swing set. Three pings ring around me.

Achievement unlocked:

Baby's first dungeon!

You completed your first dungeon! Awww, I'm just…. So proud! *Sniff*

Reward: free clothes fix

'what the hell is a free clothes f-'

A blue flash obscures my vision, when it disappears, I notice that the holes in my shirt from the Spriggan's claws are gone. As are the sweat stains and numerous grass stains all over me.

Achievement unlocked:

Natural Predator!

Kill a nature spirit with it's natural predator… Fire!

Reward: +1 level to fire touch.

Ping!

Flame touch!

Cost:7

So each level the cost goes down by one? Awesome! Eventually I'll be able to do it for free. Although, at that point I'll probably be doing much cooler spells. My mouth salivates briefly at the thought of using Fiendfyre.

Achievement unlocked:

With Friends like these…

You've made a supremely powerful deity take notice of you!

Reward: EXPECT THEM.

"Ooohhh that isn't ominous at all. Y'know what fuck you too game!"

I turn around to walk back home, talking notice of the darkening sky.

'Damn I wasn't there to make dinner. They're probably going to kill me.'

Ping!

Fuck you too buddy!

That night when I get home I'm immediately yelled at by Petunia and slapped around (-10HP) by Vernon for not being able to make dinner. I think about using my newfound magical power to threaten them but decide against it, the last thing I need is attracting too much information before I can go to Hogwarts. Dudley mentions it's his birthday tomorrow, I can't exactly remember whether Harry got his letter during Dudley's birthday or if it was a bit after. I wonder if my blatant increase in magical strength will affect how quickly the letter arrives?

I lay down on my "bed" and fall asleep pretty quickly. It's to be expected considering just how much of a hectic day I've had.

I find myself in a field of blackness. It stretches as far as my eyes can see, with no speck of light to be found.

"I appreciate the work you did in my name today, my child." A voice sounds from behind me, sounding as if it's right next to my ear.

I whirl around and come face to face with:

Death

What you can expect from this fic:

Gamer Powers much more balanced than they usually are

Voldemort not getting stomped on. (In fact when he gets revived, he gets a pretty significant power-up from canon.

Speaking of canon: this may as well be considered an au, since to keep things interesting for our MC who knows the plot of HP, this story is gonna be the same... but different. Theres not much I can mention without giving spoilers, but just for an example, the "basilisk" in Year 2 isn't going to be a basilisk, which will obviously affect how the MC reacts, and will stop the MC from just running to the Chamber of Secrets and killing it which would make for a boring story. Expect many such twists on what you know.

Despite being a gamer fic (which usually just have TONS of ginding solo) this one is mainly going to focus on the characters and the plot. The game will be there, and the grinding WILL happen occasionally, but I want this to be a story first, and a power fantasy second.

tying up of many loose ends not explained in HP

Balanced characters, no real "bashing" hell, even Voldemort is gonna be presented as a complex and (hopefully) compelling character... All the best villains are!

"Wow I really love this fic! Is there a way I can support it?

If you can draw, I'd love a cover art ;)
