A(lyce)/N(ote): Hi! Alyce here. This story is another one by my sister, Indigo (and if you haven't read her story Zuko, go read it, it's amazing). I'll be leaving little notes at the beginnings and/or ends of some chapters in addition to Indigo's notes (in italics). If you enjoy the story, please leave Indi some encouragement so she'll let me post the next chapter!

Indigo's Note: I got the idea for this after reading a oneshot where Sokka contemplated how Aang is an airbender through and through, but Zuko fights like the world in balance. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it's called. Or who it's by.

So I wrote this instead. Yay plot -bunnies- komodo rhinos.

The Avatar Spirit

(Does Not Believe In Cryogenics)

The boy fled with his bison, flying through a storm. Over the sea, they flew too low, and the bison was trapped by waves and wind. It was pulled underwater, the boy still on its back.

The Spirit within the boy took over, bringing air to him, then freezing the boy and the bison inside a sphere of ice.

The Spirit waited. A war began with an attack on the air temples.

The world needed an Avatar.

The Spirit left.

The Spirit found a girl, just begun forming. It settled inside her to wait.

The girl was born. She grew, discovered her waterbending. In times of danger, bent other elements. Never fire.

She lived and died at the North Pole, never accepting who she was.

The Spirit found another child. She was born strong and healthy. She was a powerful bender, mastering earthbending before she was grown. She did not realize she was the Avatar. When she bent other elements in the heat of battle, she did not see, did not think it was her.

The Spirit tried to nudge at her, but she was stubborn and unyielding as the rocks of her element, refusing to show weakness.

Rocks crack under pressure and heat. So did she.

Again, the Spirit found an unborn babe to inhabit. Again, it tried, for the world.

This boy, like those before him, did not know who he was. The Spirit wished it had been able to reclaim all of itself, but a piece had stayed behind, keeping the airbender alive in the ice.

The Spirit waited, hoping for the day when the airbender would be released. The day when this boy, with his anger and his pain and his hope, could enter the Avatar state.

The Spirit waited, through firebending that was taught wrong. The Spirit waited, through events that would have triggered him. The Spirit waited, through long days at sea and longer nights.

Finally, the Spirit was released.
