Nova Lily Black was born in July 31, 1980, she inherited her parents, Sirius Black and Marlene Black (nèe McKinnon), looks. At 11, she was already prettier than most kids at her age. She also inherited her parents knack for trouble making.
The McKinnon family was wiped out by Voldemort's followers, leaving Nova to be raised by Andromeda Tonks, her father's cousin, and the only living member of the Black family that didn't support Voldemort.
Nova was raised by a happy family who accepted and loved her as if she was their own daughter. She had a very special connection with Nymphadora Tonks, who was like an older sister to her. Nova's parentage was a very delicate matter, her mother was a war hero who died to protect her daughter from Voldemort's wrath and her family was proud to tell her that, although her father's identity was never completely revealed to her, people raised her into thinking she was Regulus Black's daughter, the wrong Black brother. Her real father was alive, in Azkaban, for betraying everyone who loved him.
Andromeda was a very caring and supportive mother figure but she was fierce enough to discipline Nova's pranking and troublemaking. At the age of 11, Nova had already set her neighbor's garden on fire, made one of Draco's chocolates explode right into his face (leaving his face dirty and sticky for a whole month), turned Nymphadora's ex-boyfriend into a frog and commanded an army of garden gnomes to destroy Malfoy Manor's gardens. She was able to get away from the things she did to the Malfoys since no one from the Tonks household liked them anyway but she was grounded for pranking the neighbors and Dora actually congratulated her on accidentally turning Charlie Weasley into a frog.
Nova's beautiful looks were, as mentioned before, inherited from her parents. She had Marlene's shiny blue eyes and her facial features. From Sirius' she inherited his perfect long dark hair. Her personality was divided between Marlene's kindness and Sirius' playful and charming personality.
Ted Tonks was a loving father but, unlike Andromeda, he spoilt the girls a lot. He received Nova's letter and hid it till her birthday to surprise the girl, she was nervous about not receiving it and ended up being a squib. He knew that she wasn't a squib ever since she accidentally lit his hair on fire when she was 4. He also received Dora's admission letter into the Auror training program and hid it away from his daughter, planning to surprise her either.
The Tonks house was a beautiful place in a countryside near London, the house was stone built, had three floors and a huge garden in which Nova enjoyed flying around on her broom and liked to chase gnomes around. At the moment, Nova was playing quidditch with Dora because Andromeda told them to leave the house so that she could clean it up in peace. Andromeda was actually baking a cake for Nova while Ted decorated the house, Dora knew that they wanted to surprise the young witch in her 11st birthday and made sure to hold her attention as long as possible.
" Dora, I'm hungry." Nova said while she held the quaffle, she was a great chaser.
" You should shower first, you're dirty." Nymphadora commented while they walked back to the house. They were passing by a pound that they used to swim around during summer.
" No, I'm not." Nova touched her face, looking for any sign of uncleanness.
" Now you are." Dora threw a mud ball in the girls direction.
" Nymphadora Tonks!" Nova exclaimed with a huge smile on her face before throwing mud at the 18-year-old witch, who fell into the mud near the pound.
" Come back here you little-" Dora got off the mud, ran after her and picked her up, throwing the young witch into the mud.
They started to have a mud fight but their growling stomachs reminded them that it was probably time to go home. They were completely dirty and Dora reminded to get themselves clean before they entered to avoid Andromeda's wrath.
" Scourgify" Dora pointed her wand to Nova, cleaning her up instantly, doing the same to herself afterwards " Let's run upstairs to take a shower, I still feel a little muddy."
" Yeah." Nova agreed and ran upstairs as fast as she could, not realizing the cake and decorations as quickly passed by the dining room's door.
" Mom, dad, she is upstairs showering. Can I help you with something?" Nymphadora asked her parents.
" No, no, no. Stay away from the cake." Andromeda playfully swatted her away with a dishcloth.
Dora Tonks also went upstairs to shower before surprising the girl. She was a little disheartened by not receiving the acceptance letter to Auror training and she kept thinking about it all the bloody time. According to her, she was so entranced into her negative thoughts that she fell down the stairs, but everyone else knew better. They knew that she was the clumsiest person alive and fell down the stairs on daily basis. She showered quickly before running downstairs to surprise Nova, who was like a little sister to her. To her, Nova was more than a sister, she choose Nova to be her little sister, unlike most people who just had to accept their siblings their bond was spontaneous. She bought a tiny black Kneazle kitten to the, now, 11-year-old witch, before getting it downstairs, she wrapped a small red ribbon around its neck.
" You brought a XXX beast to an 11-year-old girl?" Andromeda asked her daughter after looking at the metamorphmagus witch.
" He is classified XXX just because he is aggressive towards CERTAIN people." Dora tried to defend her gift " And they are highly intelligent and can sense trouble, this little guy here will attack her enemies, not HER."
" Do you know Nova at all? She Carrie's trouble with her. If this thing attacks her, it will be gone." Andromeda told her daughter.
" It's just a kitten, love. It's not going to attack anyone yet." Ted tried to negotiate.
" We shall see." Andromeda said not a bit convinced.
"NOVA, COME HERE, DEAR." Ted yelled gently after they set everything up.
" I'm coming." Nova ran down the stairs and found a small birthday party for her " Merlin, thank you so much." the girl was elated by the surprise.
Everyone hugged her and kissed her cheek before they gathered around the cake to sing happy birthday to Nova. The girl blew the candles and made a wish, she wished for her Hogwarts letter.
" Come, let's open your gifts, honey." Andromeda said with a huge smile.
" Nova, what is this ?!" Ted said with a harsh tone, rarely used by him. She was terrified of what would have caused the usually calm man talk like that " This letter here is accusing you of something very serious."
" What? Merlin, what did I do ? Oh, no, Mrs. Filliander discovered that I sent another army of gnomes to her garden ?" Nova asked and Ted Tonks, faking anger, passed her the letter.
" Congratulations, love." Ted Tonks said with his usual loving tone and gave the girl a hug " You've been accepted to Hogwarts."
" Merlin, I'm going to Hogwarts." She said to herself " I'M GOING TO HOGWARTS" she yelled and everyone congratulated her again.
" Oh, you're not the only one going somewhere." Andromeda said with a quizzical smile before handling another letter to her daughter.
" Bloody hell, I've been accepted into Aurora training." Dora exclaimed before the family also embraced her " You knew it all the time? And you let me suffer ?" She asked her parents.
" Love, a little bit of suffering is good, raises character." Ted told her " Now, let's open Nova's gifts before you hex your own parents."
" Mine first." Dora yelled and picked something from under the table " Close your eyes, Nova."
Nova closed her eyes and waited, she felt Dora's hands grabbing hers and putting something very soft into them. She could swear that she felt it moving.
" Open your eyes. SURPRISE!" Dora told the young witch.
" Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. It's the cutest thing I've ever seen, and I've seen my baby pictures. Look at this, is it a boy or a girl ?"
" It's a boy."
" His name will be Noir, he is black and I'm a Black." Nova announced " Hear, hear, he is purring."
" I told you so." Ted whispered to his wife and she passed him a galleon coin for winning their bet.
" You made a bet on it? When? I didn't see it."
" After twenty years of marriage you can establish visual communication." Ted said.
" Meaning that he passed me a note proposing the bet while you were ogling the cake and I nodded." Andromeda gave Ted a quick kiss on the lips.
" Ew, gross." Nova muttered at the couple.
" Calm down, lil' one. You will change your mind in two years most, soon you will be off snogging boys at Hogwarts. I did." Dora said playfully and wiped a fake tear off her face.
" You what ?" Ted asked his daughter wide-eyed while Andromeda laughed and Nova had a disgusted look on her face.
" Ew, ew, ew. I won't snog any boys, they are disgusting. "
" That's my girl." Ted Tonks commented and kissed Nova's head.
After Nova almost died of excitement, the Tonkses took Nova to Diagon Alley to buy her school supplies. She had been there before but now she felt like she really belonged to the wizarding world. She never stopped being amazed by how amazing everything could be, there were shops selling the strangest things money could buy. Talking about money, they went to Gringots first to get some money to buy her things.
Nova had inherited a lot of money from her parents, all the McKinnon family died, leaving everything into a vault for the girl. She had a small fortune stashed and the Tonkses never used a single Knut of said fortune while raising her, they protested when she asked to use her own money to buy school supplies but let her do it nonetheless. She wanted to use the money her mother left her to feel like she was being watched over by Marlene even if it was just financially. She was also the only heir to the Black fortune, since the family was either dead or imprisoned, she felt like that money was dirty and never opened the Black vault.
After getting picking up some golden coins, they went to Ollivarder's to finally buy Nova a wand.
" Good afternoon." Ollivander greeted them after they entered the store. He was an old man with shiny, pale eyes.
" Good afternoon." Nova greeted him with a huge smile.
" I thought I'd be seeing you soon, miss Black. You look just like your mother, she was a very powerful witch. Nine and a quarter inches long, made of Aspen, a very strong duelist. Your father, however, had a Dogwood one, perfect for mischievous and strong wizards. Now, Ms. Black, let me see, what is your wand arm ?"
" This one." She raised her left arm. Suddenly a tape was measuring her from shoulder to finger, then wrist to elbow, shoulder to floor, knee to armpit and round her head. Meanwhile, Ollivander explained her about the cores of each wand.
" Ms. Black. Try this one. Beechwood and dragon heartstring. Nine inches. Nice and flexible. Just take it and give it a wave." Ollivander handed her a wand and she did what was told, nothing happened.
" Walnut and Phoenix feather. Very powerful and innovative. Give it a wave." Ollivander gave her a beautiful dark wand with intricate designs. She was completely in love with it and gave it a gentle wave, a stream of colorful sparks shot from the end like a firework. Her family clapped after seeing this, looks like she finally had a wand.
" Bravo! Very good! A powerful wand like this means you're destined to great things." Ollivander applauded the girl, who couldn't stop smiling.
Andromeda paid the wandmaker and they made their way to the library. She got all the first year required books and bought some other books that picked her interest, the weirdest one was about the friendliest hex, jinxes and curses. She also bough an unbreakable and adjustable cage for her cat, it was very useful since it adjusted itself to whatever animal inside of it (although it wasn't capable of holding creatures bigger than 5'7). They also bought some school robes for Nova and some auror robes for Tonks.
If Nova was excited about the shopping trip, now she was more than excited about getting into the train. She learnt that it was legal to perform magic after the Hogwarts train departed so she started training many spells with a stick and started to read a bit. She found potions very interesting, since she would be able to practice them at home with some help when a wand was needed. She already decorated how to prepare some potions and Ted helped her to make a Pompion Potion and they turned their heads into Pumpkins to scare Dora and Andromeda.
And the day she waited for during her entire life finally came, she thought that she wouldn't be able to sleep but, as the heavy sleeper she is, she was woken by Andromeda, who gently woke her up and told her to get ready. She looked around, trying to see if she forgot anything. She realized how much she would miss her family, she would miss Andromeda's cookies and the way she woke her up, she would miss Ted's tarts and the pranks they played and she would miss everything about Dora.
They reached King's Cross early, and Nova had never been more puzzled before. There was no platform nine and three-quarters, she shot an anxious wide-eyed look to her guardians and they laughed a little. Dora gently ruffled her hair and said:
" Calm down, lil' one. Do you really think that a wizarding train would be easily seen by muggles? You have to walk straight into the barrier between platform nine and ten." Dora was pulling the cart that carried Nova's trunks and she urged the 11-year-old witch to go.
" Ok. You will come with me, right?" She nervously asked her family.
" Of course, honey." Andromeda said with a gentle smile.
" Here I go." Nova muttered and ran straight into the wall. She opened her eyes after realizing that she ran more than it was possible.
A scarlet steam engine was waiting next to a platform packed with people. A sign overhead said Hogwarts Express, 11 o'clock. Smoke from the engine drifted over the heads of the chattering crowd, while cats of every colour wound here and there between their legs. Owls hooted to each other in a disgruntled sort of way over the babble and the scraping of heavy trunks. The first few carriages were already packed with students, some hanging out of the window to talk to their families, some fighting over seats.
Nova's family appeared behind her soon and she kissed and hug each one of them before getting into the train to find a carriage for herself. She was surprise at how full the place was, the only vacant place had by a messy raven haired, green-eyed boy who Nova tought very friendly.
"Hi, are you waiting for anyone? May I sit here?" Nova asked the boy, he looked like he was around her age " Everywhere else is full"
"Yes." The boy said gently before Nova sat in front of him.
Nova put her head on the window and exclaimed: " DORA !"
Nymphadora Tonks turned around and called her parents, they went close to the window to talk to the girl one last time.
" Do not cause too much trouble, Miss." Andromeda said playfully.
" Can't promise anything about that, trouble finds me, love." Nova said with a small smirk.
" Stay away from boys." Ted told her with a smile.
" No, no, SNOG boys." Dora yelled, correcting her father " And have fun."
" Snogging is disgusting, I can promise you I will stay away from boys." Nova said with a huge smile before yelling again " The train is departing, I love you!"
And she could see the usually calm and elegant Andromeda crying as the train moved. She got surprised to find out that Dora was wiping a small tear that was rolling down her face while Ted had a watery smile on, they were all waving at her.
" Sorry about that, it's embarrassing. " Dora said to the brunette boy sitting in front of her.
" Don't be, your family sounds awesome." The boy replied with a wistful look on his face.
" They are." Nova said with a faltering smile " Let's talk about something else, if I keep talking about them I will end up crying and I have a troublemaker reputation to keep up. I never introduced myself after barging into your compartment, I'm Nova, Nova Black." She said before sticking out a hand for him to shake.
" I'm Harry, Harry Potter." The boy shook hands with her, forgetting how famous he was in the wizarding world.
