The Orphaned Twins - A Pair of Kings Fanfiction…

My A/N: Well here's a new story for POK. I am excited to present "The Orphaned Twins" written by me and Roguewind. I brought the idea to Roguewind and the author loved it, and we began to bring this story to life. We hope you all enjoy it, for we believe it is something different, and we look forward to seeing how this turns out. I wrote a little bit of the beginning, and the end while Rougewind wrote a lot of the middle, as well as the brother's backstory. Seriously; Roguewind is awesome and you should check Roguewinds stories out! It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with them on this collab. Anyway; we own nothing from POK but the OC Lucy Jane and the plot of this story.

Roguewinds A/N: Brakayla 4-ever asked if I wanted to collab with her on a story and after hearing her idea I was sold. It's a different twist to Pair of Kings which hasn't been done before and I was instantly excited! After some brainstorming, Brakayla 4-ever started writing the chapter and I wrote the midsection, for the chapter to be finished by Brakayla 4-ever. She did an amazing job with both her parts of the chapter and editing the dialogues, it's been really fun working together already! She's an amazing writer and it's been a pleasure working with her so far. Hope you enjoy reading the first chapter as much as we enjoyed writing it and let us know what you thought! How does that sound?:)

Chapter 1

"Please we have nowhere else to put them."

Mason Makoola finds himself on his front porch being asked to take in an orphaned kid…again. His ex-wife Lucy June stood before him almost on her knees begging him. Mason normally found himself being asked to provide housing for orphaned kids quiet often. After all, his ex-wife was a worker in the foster childcare system and Mason was always her last resort if she couldn't find a place for said child.

"I don't know…" Mason begins as he sighs in thought; he swore after the last child, he wouldn't take anymore.

But Lucy wasn't ready to let him say no. This time she folded her hands together and actually got on her knees as she begged him once more. "Come on, please…. pretty please…."
The desperation is clear in her tone of voice. She frowns as she says a little quieter. "I have nowhere else to put them. If I can't find them a home, things won't end well at all." Lucy finishes with sadness as she sighs and stands back up, she dusts herself off.

Taking in the information, Mason frowns and thinks things over. "Alright, I guess I could talk things over with Mikayla…" Mason finally answers, giving in. He smiles softly to himself as he sees Lucy's eyes light up with hope. "I'll just need more information on the child we will be housing…" Mason declares as he eyes Lucy. He didn't want to take a child without knowing about them a bit more. The more he knew about the child, the easier it would be to mentally prepare him for what he's going to have to deal with.

Lucy then smiles nervously at him. "Well, that's the thing, it's not one child, but two children I need you to the house." She finishes explaining as she then grows softer under Mason's surprised stare.
"Didn't I mention it was two?" She laughs nervously as she stares down at her feet.

"What!?" Mason demands as he eyes Lucy with a frown. "No, you didn't mention it was two, I thought it was only one. I normally only take one child in for you, not two…"
Mason argues as he takes the file from her hands.

Lucy frowns and shifts her stance nervously as she sighs. She looks back up at him and says, "I know it's asking a lot, but please Mason, you're my last hope. These boys have been through a lot of rejections, and if I can't find them another home soon, I'll have to split them up and send them to different families." Lucy explains as she frowns at the thought. "I really don't want to have to do that to them." She finishes sadly.

Once more Mason frowns as he takes the information in, two children?

"How old are they?" He suddenly asks her, his curiosity finally getting the best of him as he holds the file in his hand, unopened.

Lucy grimaces before answering him. "They are fraternal twins and they're 16 years old, the same age as Mikayla." Mason hands the file back to her as she says this.

"No; absolutely not. Raising one teenager is difficult enough, how do you expect me to raise three?" Mason pinches the bridge of his nose as he answers his ex-wife. He tries to calm himself down.

Lucy slams the file against his chest this time. Annoyance and frustration surfaces as she explains, "That's exactly the answer I've received from all the other potential foster parents I presented their file to. How do you expect me to raise not one but two teenagers? You are my last resort Mason, please I don't want to split these boys up they've been through enough already and they're good kids who deserve a chance at a 'normal' life." Lucy finishes as Mason hesitantly grabs a hold of the manila folder again, actually opening it this time.

Once the folder is opened, he is met by a picture of two teenage boys. One has dark skin, short black hair, and deep brown eyes. Though he's smiling at the camera, it seems forced. He has his arm around his brother's shoulder. This boy has light skin, dark hair, and hazel eyes. Long bangs cover his forehead and his smile too seems forced. Just by looking at the boy's faces in the pictures, Mason can tell they almost seemed broken. The sadness in their eyes is evident.

Mason frowns as he continues to stare at the picture in thought. Looking up at Lucy he asks, "Are you sure these boys are twins?" The boys seemed so different looking; he couldn't help himself from asking.

Lucy seems unphased by this question and shrugs. "Their mother was black and their father white."

As he reads their names, he brings the folder closer to his face and focuses his eyes as he tries to make out the information.
"Brady Parker and…what does that say…. Is that even English? I don't know how to pronounce this."

Lucy chuckles. "Don't worry, everyone calls him Boomer. Their names are Brady and Boomer Parker."

Mason heaves a sigh as he sits down on the swing sofa. He's at a crossroad here, he wants to help her and take these boys in but he's not sure if he can give them the help and life they deserve. Having one foster kid at a time had been challenging enough, who's to say two sixteen-year-olds won't be any easier. If he were to do this, Mason decided that he needed more information about the brothers then just their names and age.

"How did they end up back in the system at 16 years old?"

Lucy sits down next to him and sighs sadly at the question. A faraway look is in her eyes as she begins to tell him about them. "Until these boys were 9 years old, they lived at a foster home with good parents, who took good care of them and provided for them. The couple even talked about adopting them, but their house was unfortunately destroyed by a fire. Luckily everyone managed to get out of the house in time, but the damage was irreversible, the house was completely destroyed. Their insurance covered only part of it. Sadly; this left the couple with no other choice but to hand them back over to us since they were unable to provide for them any longer. After that, it all went downhill for Brady and Boomer. They bounced from home to home, every single one of them stating that they were too much work or that they were too much trouble from their past traumas." Lucy explains as Mason interrupts her suddenly -

- "Well that's just cruel; they have been through a lot. Of course, the boys are going to have traumas, what kinds of parents reject them because of that!?"
Mason felt anger welling up inside of him. Lucy flashes him a pained smile.

Lucy continues as she shakes her head sadly, "That's not the worst part; some couples simply used them for the money.
We couldn't prove it because Brady and Boomer wouldn't talk about it, but there was speculation that the last couple to house them not only used them for the money but were abusive to the boys as well."

Mason listened to her intently as another question entered his mind. "You mentioned their parents, what about them? Where are they?"

Lucy's expression saddened as she looked down at her hands. "They died in a car accident when the boys were 3 years old.
They were in the car with them but were miraculously unharmed and since no direct family could be found at the time, they entered the foster system."

Mason ran his hand through his hair as he stood up again. He just wasn't sure if he could handle fostering again. Every single time he told himself that he wouldn't get attached and he always did.
This always resulted in heartbreak for him and Mikayla once they moved to a different home, a more permanent one.

Even though the decision was hard, Mason finally comes to a conclusion. "Alright, I'll take them in – "Mason begins as he looks at Lucy whose face suddenly has a huge smile on it."
– But I'll need time to talk to Mikayla about it, so she is aware of the situation and what's going on." Mason finishes simply.

Instantly; Lucy pulls him into a hug. "Oh, thank you so much! I promise you won't regret this decision Mason; the boys will be so happy to hear the news! And no worries, they will be here in a day or so, that should give you plenty of time to explain things to Mikayla and get things ready for the boy's arrival." Lucy finishes as she sighs in relief. "I knew I could count you, thank you again, Mason, and you have no idea how much this means to me."

Mason nods, "No problem. But this is the last time I'm taking any more foster kids in. Do we have a deal?" Mason questions as he arches his eyebrow.

Lucy frowns at the statement but nods. "We have a deal." The two shake on it. Lucy then pulls her hand away and says, "I'll message you and keep you updated on their arrival. Until then, I'll see you later…"

With that, Mason is left alone on his front porch watching his ex-wife left. After Lucy drives off in her car, Mason turns and sighs to himself as he sits on the swing once again with his head in his hands.
How he got talked into fostering more kids, he wasn't sure.

Would he change his mind? No.

At first, he wanted to resist, but after looking at their information something spiked his interest and he was drawn to the boys. What it was, he wasn't sure, yet.
But he could tell that these boys needed help. Now; all he was going to have to do, was explain things to Mikayla. That was going to be a talk he was not looking forward to…
