Octavia kept her gun raised and ready. This hunt was more than she prepared for but she felt like she had to be the one to rid the world of this particular evil. She felt like she released it on the world by just walking away. She paused as she listened to the sounds around her. A smirk crawled across her face when she heard the last monster take a breath. She fired, hitting it in the head before it registered that it had walked up on her hiding spot. She slinked around the body, cutting his head off and made her way out the back door. She took a deep breath of fresh air, cleansing her lungs of the rancid smell that permeated the whole decrypted house. Her phone vibrated in her pocket for the seventh time since she had walked away from the Winchesters at the diner. She started walking towards her car as she answered the phone. "I'm just fine, Dean. The nest is dead and you don't need to …"
"Where the Hell are you, O?" She could hear the engine of the Impala revving as he growled at her. "You really went to that farmhouse by yourself. I told you that we didn't know what the issue with these vamps were."
"It was my issue, Dean. MY hunt, MY mistake, Dean. I'm the one who let him go. I'm the reason for this particular evil in the world." She leaned against the trunk of her car as she imagined the look on his face once he figured out what she was talking about.
"Are you telling me that you snuck out of that diner, leaving us to wonder if someone kidnapped you because of Derek? I thought that fucknut ran off once you proved to be a better hunter than he was."
"No, he didn't. That was the lie I told everyone, including myself, to justify why he was gone." She swallowed hard. She decided she finally needed to tell the truth. "We were on a hunt together and we got into yet another argument because he was acting …"
Sam piped in. "Like a dick?"
"I was going to say an overprotective, know-it-all misogynist but DICK does seem to cover it too." She took a deep breath to steady herself as she realized what she was about to tell the Winchesters. "Anyway, the argument got heated because he wanted to take the lead after I did all of the work tracking down the nest and preparing everything while he went out drinking. I told him no that I was the lead and he could cover me. He said like hell he was going in behind some little bitch and then he hit me. Right in the face... I was stunned at that moment. I decided that I had enough so I drove off, leaving him there." She wiped her blood stained hand on her jeans. "I let him walk into the nest by himself. Later that night when he came into our motel room, I could tell something was off. He said he had killed a couple of the vamps but the alpha got him. She turned him to replace the ones he killed. She made him drink from the kidnapped girl we were trying to save and then she slept with him in front of all of the rest of the nest to celebrate his turning. He then told me that he loved the feel of the girl's blood flowing down his throat, that it made him feel powerful and invincible, that he LOVED the fact she had sex with him in full view of everyone else in the house. It made him feel like the center of attention which we all know he loved more than anything else. He smiled when he told me that his alpha, who he had to mention thought he was the sexiest being she had ever seen, had allowed him to come kill me as a reward for draining the virgin." She grabbed her water bottle out of the back seat and took a long drink from it. "He jumped at me after giving me that long ass speech. I had worked myself around to where I was close to the door and then shot him with a silver bullet. Once he was hit and stunned, I bolted for the door. I ran into a couple of guys in the parking lot and asked for a ride away from my abusive boyfriend. They let me in and drove off without any questions. I guess the revolver I had in my hands still kept them from really trying anything with me. So, yes this was my mistake, and I needed to end it."
She heard Dean sigh. "Now I'm mad you didn't let me kill him for laying hands on you." Sam let out a heavy growl as Dean continued. "I see where you're coming from but you didn't have to do this alone. We always have your back."
She watched as the Impala pulled up in front of her car, lighting up the area where she was standing. She smiled as the last thing she said over the phone was, "I know you do." She hung up the phone as Sam jumped out of the passenger's side and had her in his arms before she could think. She buried her face into his chest as he held her as close as he could. "I had to do this on my own. I had to rid the world of my own demons."
Dean rubbed her back as he glanced back at the decaying building. "He wasn't YOUR demon. He could've walked away. He could've followed you back to the motel and made up with you but instead HE decided to be Billy Badass and take on a whole vamp nest by himself. That is NOT your fault. HE made that choice." He smirked at Sam who just shook his head. "I, on the other hand, would have walked my happy ass back to the motel and made you KNOW how sorry I was for EVER being a jackass." She started laughing into Sam's chest as he continued to shake his head. "But then John Winchester would've kicked my ass if he ever found out that I raised my hand to a woman. Nope!" He shook his head as Sam nodded in agreement. "I know that I would have rather been killed by the vamps than have to face John Winchester and have to tell him that I hit a woman." He looked at Octavia and nodded his head. "Come on. Let's go back in there and make sure you didn't leave behind any stragglers."
Dean watched her nod her head as Sam walked back to the Impala and got the machetes he left on the front seat. "I'm sorry I ran out on you. To be honest, I was scared to have to explain to you both WHY Derek was the new head vamp in charge. One of the vamps in the nest actually tracked me down and told me that Derek had killed the alpha because she got mad when she caught him in bed with two of the young vamps. This vamp told me that he killed her in front of the whole nest and DARED anyone to challenge him." They started walking towards the door as she shook her head. "He really was a dick, wasn't he?"
"YES!" They both yelled as Sam kicked open the door. The smell hit them, making her gag slightly. Dean paused for a moment to settle himself. "Ok, there is more than just dead vamps in here. O, did you find any corpses laying around before you started swinging?"
She shook her head as she grimaced trying to hold back the bile that was creeping up her throat. "No, I didn't check for bodies before I left … well, bodies."
"Ok Sammy, go kick in the front door so we can start airing this place out." Sam nodded as he started around to the front. Dean looked over at Octavia. "You and I are going to start a sweep of the rest of the house to see where that smell is coming from. Your fresh bodies should not smell like that." He led her into the house with the little bit of light that was coming in through the door behind them. He stopped when he saw Derek's head laying on the floor. He looked over his shoulder as he kicked it into the next room. "GOAL!" He screamed as Sam kicked in the front door just in time to see the head roll over to him.
Octavia just laughed as these two grown men became little boys in front of her playing soccer with the head of her ex-boyfriend. "Ok Winchesters, aren't you like in your 30s?"
Sam faked being offended as Dean laughed. "Dean is 30. I'm merely 26."
"Ok sorry to have upset your tender feelings, Sam, but as fun as this is we do have a job to do here."
Dean nodded as he gave Derek's head one final kick over the moldy sofa that was taking up most of the main room. "You're right, O." Sam rolled his eyes as he stepped over another headless body on the floor. "Let's check the basement first and we're sticking together this time." He stared at her as Sam laughed again. She nodded as he led the way. Once he opened the door, he heard both Octavia and Sam stifle a gag. "Don't breathe through your nose. Either try to breathe only through your mouth or pull your shirt up to cover your nose and mouth as much as possible. Hopefully there is a window down here but I think we found the cause of the smell."
Octavia pulled her shirt up over her nose and tightened it with the rubber band in her ponytail. "Dean, do we have a plan of what we're going to do once we find what we KNOW we're going to find down here?"
"No. I need to see what we're dealing with first." They started down the stairs. Dean pulled the chain to the bare light bulb swinging from the bottom of the stairs. The harsh light shone on the pile of child sized bodies thrown all over the basement floor. Octavia gasped as Sam gagged. "If anyone feels like puking, please go outside. We don't need to leave any of our DNA in here with THIS." Dean thought for a moment. "Matter of fact, let's go outside now." He turned off the lights as they started to run outside to the cars. Dean got the green cooler out of the back of the Impala as Sam finished throwing up in the treeline. He handed both him and Octavia a beer as he tried to get the thought of what they just saw out of his head. Dean took a drink from his can as he thought of what to do next. "I want to call the cops so that the parents of those babies will get to bury their children but …"
Sam nodded. "Yeah, we're Sam and Dean Winchester and we'll get blamed for killing those kids and the 'humans' laying all over the floor in there." He finished his beer and looked at Octavia.
She looked at them both and pulled her phone out of her pocket. She pushed a number on her speed dial and waited for him to pick up. "Hey Reagan, I got a little something I need some help with." She held her hand up to Dean before he could say anything. "Yeah, something a little paranormal but if we play it right, you'll get a great collar." She smiled as she listened to his response. "Yes, I'll agree to that. Can you meet me at the Black Bear Diner in Smithville so we can talk about what I found before you call your partner in? Ok, see you then." She hung up the phone and finished her beer. "Ok, I need you two to get out of here now. I'm going back to the diner and I'm going to meet up with an actual FBI agent that I know. He came up on me once during a hunt so he knows what I do. When he experienced what I was dealing with at that hunt, we came up with an agreement. If I find anything criminal while I'm doing away with our kind of evil, I call him and drop a dime. He gets a good collar. I get to keep hunting without worrying if they will follow me, and he usually will take me out to dinner as a thank you." She started packing up her tools in her trunk as Sam started putting their machetes in the trunk of the Impala.
Dean loaded up the cooler. "Do we need to get rid of the vamp bodies?"
She shook her head. "No, we'll work those in and it'll make the story better for him." They looked at her as she just smiled at them. "He needs a person to blame for the crime. I'll have him write up that one of the gang got high and killed the others before getting arrested."
Sam looked at her with a questioning look. "Who is getting arrested?"
She smiled a wicked smile. "Believe it or not, the vamp who told me where they were staying wants it all to be over. He's done with the lifestyle now that he had to deal with Derek at the helm for a few months. I bet killing children was the last straw for him." The guys agreed with her assessment. "I'll call him and have him arrested. He'll be happy to be arrested so he can be killed by a hunter in prison. His mom will get to bury him and the hunter will get the kill."
Dean walked over and hugged her as Sam walked over to shut the front and back doors of the house. "Ok, we'll follow you to the diner then we'll head out of town. If you need us, just call us."
"I promise, Dean."
Dean followed her to the diner. As she pulled into the parking lot, a tall guy with a big smile walked over to her car door. Sam watched as she smiled back at the guy, letting him put his arm around her waist as they walked into the diner. "Dean, you think we should just hang around in case she needs us?"
"No, I think she's got this. If she needs us, she'll call us." He started towards the town limits. "That and we need to get to Bobby's to finish planning for stopping this apocalypse."
Sam glanced back at the diner one last time as he nodded in agreement. "Ok, I'm not 100% good with this but you're right. The last thing this world needs is for Sam and Dean Winchester to be arrested for not being dead and then everyone's dead because Michael and Lucifer are having daddy issues." Dean rolled his eyes, knowing Sam was right and stepped on the gas. Sam picked up his phone to call Bobby to tell him they were on their way after this little detour.
