Author's Note from Mat49324: Well, it's now time for one-shot #17. I guess I got another idea again for some good romance. This time, we're having the spies back at Mali-U. The setting may be back to a pseudo-norm, but the romance sure isn't stopping. We certainly hope you like this one. If dumas might consider this his supposed sequel to Aqua Spies, maybe I might've done something pretty creative. I'll leave this up to him. For now, here's The Blue Time Ranger if there's anything he'd like to say.
Author's Note from The Blue Time Ranger: And another one-shot is ready to go! Since summer has been striking back over in my neck of the woods, what better relief than a pool-themed one-shot? (But seriously, this humidity can go die on the surface of the sun for all I care.) Enough talking, ROLL IT!
Title: Poolside Picnic
Summary: Nick, Mat, and Blaine wish to surprise their girlfriends with a picnic – at Nick's suggestion – but not just any picnic...
Rating: K+
Story Created: 8/7/21
11:49 A.M. – Malibu University Campus
It was another typical Friday morning at the Mali-U campus for the six spies. Sam, Clover, Alex, Britney, Mat, Nick, and Blaine were sitting outside getting snacks for themselves. Sam had on a blue tanktop showing her lower midriff and a white skirt; she also had her hair in a ponytail. Clover wore a bright pink tanktop with a #1 on the front that showed her midriff and magenta jean shorts; Alex had on yellow clothing and blue overalls. Britney had on an orange buttoned shirt and purple tie, and a knee-length skirt. Nick wore a regular football jersey and shorts. Blaine had on a regular sweater and knee-length shorts of his own. Mat had on knee-length shorts of his own and a 1998 blue and white throwback Motocross shirt that read "Button 11" on the back, which signified 4-time 125 Supercross winner Jimmy Button.
"So, is everyone's day nearly over?" Clover wondered.
"My day's pretty much done," Mat answered. "Sign language was all I had today."
"Not me," Britney replied. "Paleontology is next for me."
"Oh, basket weaving for me," Alex replied, checking her watch.
"And my Advanced Physics class is starting soon, too," Sam added.
"Surf-ology for me," Clover told them.
"I'm done as well," Nick replied as he snuck a look at Alex.
"I got beach V-ball practice a little later today," Blaine pointed out. "You know already, eh, Nick?"
"Yeah, I do," Nick quickly responded.
"Oh, we better get to our classes," Britney replied as she checked her watch.
"Okay, go... go," Mat insisted.
With that, Sam, Clover, and Alex gave their boyfriends a good-bye kiss until their classes ended.
That was when something came over Nick – something Mat immediately noticed.
"I'm pretty sure I know that look in your eyes, bro," Mat quipped. "You've got an idea for something to do with Alex, right?"
"Am I really that obvious?" Nick teased. "But seriously now, I wanted to take Alex out on a rather unorthodox picnic."
"Unorthodox how, exactly?" Blaine wondered.
"Like, maybe, by the pool?" Nick replied.
"Ooh, that sounds like fun," Mat responded. "But here's my question: how are we going to handle that?"
"You can leave that to me," Nick stated. "We should probably get some supplies before tonight, so how about we split up a little later to take care of that?"
"Sounds like a plan, man," Blaine chuckled.
1:21 P.M. – The Groove
Since Mat and Blaine had already moved on to grab their respective picnic supplies for tonight, Nick made his way into The Groove to find his own targets.
Midway through his search, though, he got some help from an unexpected ally.
"Hmmm... okay, now I've gotta get those..." Nick quipped.
"Need some help there, buddy?" May asked as she slid closer to Nick.
"Oh, I didn't know you were here, May," Nick replied.
"Well, Mira's trying to find something, too, and I'm still not used to how massive this place is," May admitted. "Not even the biggest shopping malls in Tachikawa were as gigantic as The Groove!"
"I don't know, I think that one mall in Akihabara would rival The Groove," Nick laughed. "You know the one I'm talking about, the one that Nozomi and her friends went to for their middle school film project?"
"Oh, yeah, the one she wouldn't shut up about," May giggled. "So, since I forgot to ask, what's the occasion?"
"Well, I wanted to have a picnic by the pool with Alex, and the other guys wanna do the same for their girls, so we came to The Groove to get supplies," Nick explained.
"...you really love that girl, don't you?" May stated.
"Yeah, yeah, I do," Nick answered. "She's really special to me, May. And every time she gets spy-napped on one of our cases, I really try my hardest to not lose it. She means that much to me."
"Well, then go show her a wonderful picnic," May replied, leaning over to hug Nick. "I'm pullin' for ya, buddy."
"Thanks, May," Nick replied. "Now, how about you come with me so we can knock out our shopping faster?"
"So help me, I'll figure out this confusing mess of a mall yet!" May proclaimed.
Nick gave a grin when his phone went off. It was a text alert from Blaine saying that beach volleyball practice was cancelled and moved to Monday.
"Well, that's one less thing to worry about," Nick stated. "Beach volleyball practice at Mali-U is moved to Monday."
"Lucky you," May chuckled.
"Hopefully Mat and Blaine are doing okay with foods," Nick commented as he texted Blaine back with that same question in addition to his response to Blaine's text.
Mat texted back saying he had food for himself and for Sam; Blaine was no different with Clover.
"Nick, what foods are you getting for Alex?" May wondered.
"I'm thinking something along the lines of Asian or Chinese cuisine, since she really likes that," Nick answered. "Just gotta see if they have wontons in this place, though..."
May looked around for other things to aide in Nick's plan to surprise the spy girls with this poolside picnic.
"Blanket is a check," Nick told May.
"Baskets are check," May quipped.
It thankfully didn't take long for Nick and May to finish up their part of the preparations.
"That was certainly an adventure," May giggled. "I think I know this place better now."
"It takes a while to get used to how huge it is," Nick admitted. "Your reaction was pretty much me the first time I experienced The Groove."
2:08 P.M. – Malibu University
Meanwhile, back at Mali-U, Mat and Blaine were sorting out their foods for Sam and Clover respectively.
"You think they might know already?" Blaine wondered.
"...I hope not," Mat answered, shrugging his shoulders.
He even went back to the automatic sliding doors to see if the girls were close by; as luck would have it, the girls weren't close.
"They're not even back yet," Mat told Blaine.
With that, they made final preparations before they awaited Nick to return.
"You know, I'm a little surprised when I found out that you're a fan of different kind of sports," Blaine told Mat.
"Well, I DO ride after all," Mat replied. "I guess I'm more into racing myself since I'm a racer at heart."
"Makes sense," Blaine commented.
"I'd say that's partially why I wanted to go into Journalism myself," Mat added. "I could imagine myself as either a local journalist or perhaps a sidelines reporter because it looks like a lot of fun to me."
"I could understand that," Blaine quipped. "Being on TV is normally exciting."
Mat nodded in agreement.
"Hey, how long until they're done?" Blaine wondered.
"I think we got until 2:30 or 3:00," Mat answered.
Before long, the boys noticed Nick returning with May in tow. Both Mat and Blaine gave their hellos.
"Hey, I heard about that car wash you guys had – and what Nick did to you, too," Blaine laughed.
"Gotta say, was not expecting to get dragged into an epic water hose battle," May giggled. "Does that happen a lot with all of you?"
"Like you wouldn't believe," Mat laughed.
In another part of the Mali-U campus, Alex was just leaving her basket weaving class; simultaneously, Sam had just left her Advanced Physics class.
"Mmmm... class over," Alex happily stated, stretching her arms.
"Totally," Sam quipped.
Britney joined them minutes later after her Paleontology class concluded.
"What do you think, girls?" Alex wondered. "Let's say we get our loves and maybe run on the beach for a while?" she suggested.
"Sounds like a good way to cool off," Sam quipped as her phone rang.
She looked and saw it was Mat's number. Simultaneously, Clover found the girls and she still wore her blue and white wetsuit from Surf-ology.
"Hey, sweetie, what's up?" Sam asked.
"Oh, just wanted to see how you were doing," Mat replied.
"Say, did you and the guys wanna run on the beach for a while?" Sam asked. "I figured it'd be a nice way to relax."
"Sounds like fun to me," Mat responded. "We're on our way."
It didn't take too long for the boys to arrive on the beach (they'd made a quick pit stop to stash away the stuff they'd need for tonight), and naturally, the girls were happy to see their boyfriends.
"Good to see you again, sweetie," Nick quipped.
"You say that every time, ya goof," Alex laughed even as Nick kissed her.
"Yeah, but I never get tired of it," Nick replied.
"So, where have you guys been?" Clover asked.
"Oh, we were just getting some things at The Groove," Blaine replied, trying to sound neutral.
"And I helped!" May proclaimed, showing up decked out in a two-piece orange swimsuit. "Well, more like Nick helped me. I'm still trying to make sense of how gigantic The Groove is!"
"Trust me, I had that same feeling the first time we went shopping there," Alex giggled. "Now, how about we pass some time by going on a good old-fashioned beach run?"
"Sounds like a plan," Nick chuckled, only to be playfully shoved into the water by May. "H-Hey!"
"All's fair in love and beach runs, Nick!" May laughed. "Alex should have taught you that!"
Nick's response was to swing his arm and drench May with a wave of water.
"Eat your own words, May," Nick proclaimed.
"Looks like it's on now!" Clover exclaimed.
Alex was the first one to start actually running, leading Nick to playfully chase her down.
Naturally, the three couples just had a lot of fun unwinding on the beach.
5:35 P.M. – Malibu University – Poolside Area
"All right, is everyone in position?" Nick asked as he, Mat, and Blaine finished setting up everything for their "poolside picnic". Mat and Blaine flashed a thumbs-up from their position.
"The girls are on their way now," Mat responded. He had just sent a text to Sam and instructed her to bring herself, Alex, and Clover to the pool.
From far off, May flashed her own thumbs up to Nick, which he responded to in kind, since May was playing lookout to make sure nobody (especially Mandy) could ruin the surprise.
A few minutes passed, and the boys heard footsteps signaling the girls' arrival.
"Okay, Mat, we're here," Sam proclaimed. "What's the big occasion?"
Nick did the honor of flipping the light switch to reveal what they had put together.
"SURPRISE!" Nick, Mat and Blaine all exclaimed at the same time.
"Holy cow, is this a picnic by the pool?" Alex gasped. "That's awesome!"
"It was really Nick's idea, so direct all of your thanks to him," Blaine responded.
"Well, ladies, what are we waiting for?" Nick quipped. "Let's get this pool-slash-picnic thing started!"
"I'm definitely down for that," Clover responded.
Britney declined going anyway because she had a Paleontology pop quiz to study for.
Alex was the first to notice all the boys had their board shorts on for this poolside picnic.
Sam noticed Alex beginning to crack a smile; she had a feeling she knew what Alex's next words were...
"I don't know about you guys," Alex told the girls. "But I kinda feel a bit overdressed since we're poolside..."
"I knew you were gonna say that, Alex," Sam laughed. "Guys, give us a few minutes, okay?"
"Not a problem," Mat replied.
As the girls went away, Mat even snuck a peek at Sam's backside; Nick was doing the same with Alex.
"Hey, Alex?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, I think they were looking," Alex giggled. "I kinda figured, since they're, you know, our boyfriends."
"I honestly expected it, too," Sam laughed.
"Kinda glad that Alex immediately caught on to what she did," Blaine told the boys.
"I was hoping they'd go and change, to be honest," Mat quipped.
"I figured as much myself, to be fair," Nick answered. "It wouldn't be much of a poolside picnic if they weren't in their swim stuff."
"How cool!" Alex exclaimed. "Our boys surprised us with this!"
"Totally," Clover quipped as she got her X-Powder out. "It's almost like my first date with Blaine-y!"
"Well, our boyfriends wowed us," Sam grinned as she got out her X-Powder – as did Alex. "Let's wow them!"
With that, they used their X-Powders to change, Sam getting into her classic green swimsuit (hey, a classic never goes out of style), Clover picking a yellow two-piece with red polka dots, and Alex choosing a sky-blue two-piece swimsuit that Nick himself had eyed recently.
With that, the three spies left the locker rooms and got the attention of their boyfriends.
"Hel-lo," Mat gasped as Sam sat down with him and they shared a kiss hello.
Clover sat down with Blaine and they shared a kiss hello.
"Well, look at you," Nick quipped as Alex sat down by him and kissed him. "I told ya you'd look good in that."
With that, everybody got eating their separate dishes.
"May I?" Mat asked, offering to feed Sam.
"Of course," Sam giggled and let Mat feed her.
Nick and Blaine saw and even offered to do the same with their girls; both Clover and Alex liked that for sure. Nick even snuck a fist bump to Mat, too.
Before long, everyone was done eating.
"O-M-G... thank you guys so much!" Sam grinned as she eyed Mat.
"You're welcome," Nick replied.
"We were certainly on board after Nick suggested this," Mat laughed.
"We know, babe," Sam chuckled.
"Thank you so much, guys!" Clover quipped.
"Seriously, Nick, you rock!" Alex giggled.
With that, all three girls hugged their boyfriends and engaged in a five-minute kissing session with them.
"Pretty healthy meal we had," Nick spoke after a kiss with Alex.
"Totally," Sam replied.
Everyone took a bit of time for their food to settle and began cleaning up their areas.
"Hopefully I don't put on any extra pounds after that," Sam stated when they were done.
"If so, I say we work it off somehow," Mat teased as he shared a kiss with Sam.
That was when Sam was surprised with Mat swooped her in his arms.
"And we'll do it this way," Mat laughed.
Sam let out a yelp as Mat jumped in the pool with her in his arms. The others saw Mat and Sam resurface sharing a good laugh.
"Hey, when in Rome, right?" Alex giggled.
"You know it," Nick laughed as he and Alex jumped into the pool shouting "CANNONBALL" with Clover and Blaine not too far behind.
After heading back to the penthouse, the three couples found Britney eating her dinner and watching some TV.
"Hey, how'd it go?" Britney wondered when she saw them.
"Oh, it was wonderful," Alex sighed happily.
"Say, I was wondering what May was doing outside the pool," Clover quipped.
"Oh, I was just on lookout duty to make sure your picnic time wasn't interrupted by... shall we say, unwanted elements," May replied.
"Mandy?" Clover realized.
"Mandy," May laughed.
"Well, it looks like you guys' plan was a rather smashing success," Sam giggled. "Thank you all so much for that."
"It was our pleasure," all three boys proclaimed at the same time.

Final Author's Notes from Mat49324: Well, that's my 17th one-shot completed here and now. We certainly hope you liked this and might've gotten a few laughs at times yourselves. I have plenty more one-shots coming in the future, but what remains is what the one-shot is about. Hard to believe that's #17 for me. Stay tuned for #18 – and I haven't thought about what that might be. We'll leave that up in the air for now, and here's The Blue Time Ranger if there's anything he'd like to say.
Final Author's Notes from The Blue Time Ranger: And that's another one-shot down the tubes! Summer is definitely striking again around these parts (FOUR DAYS STRAIGHT of epic humidity and severe storms, for one; OOF), so we hope this one-shot helped you cool down at least a bit.
And that's all I really have to say other than the usual: have a fantastic day, don't listen to the screeching morons, and we'll see you next mission!
