Chapter 1: Foundations

Pokemon Trainer, the most prominent and wanted job of them all.

Most kids in the Alola region grow up seeing the legendary Kukui, the Manalo Conference champion, battle against some of the strongest trainers, and the most powerful pokemon. From the island kahunas, to talented trainers that triumphed over the league, all challenged and failed.

It was common knowledge that the only person in the region who had ever managed to beat the current champion in an official match was a certain Ace Trainer. His name was Roy Petterson. Ace Trainers were titles reserved only for the most elite of battlers.

These recognized warriors, each a former winner of the Conference, work for the league themselves, performing any type of work necessary. Acting as agents and Task Force leaders, they are often regarded as heroes among the populace.

Even though Kukui and Roy's best of seven series ended with the champion winning a one-sided four matches to one, it was still an impressive feat to take even a single game against such a powerful trainer.

Roy is the only man in all of Alola who has defeated Kukui seriously. Even though the champion was known for being some trainers' first battle, no one thought anything different of him and the losses he took.

After all, everyone knew that the champion enjoyed fostering new talent by providing them with a light spar at the beginning of their career.

The Trainer School is the most popular and accessible way to learn how to become a trainer. Kids begin attending the schools all over the region at the young age of five years old, and if everything goes right they graduate at sixteen and possess every skill needed that will enable them to start their journeys as official pokemon trainers.

The room was noisy. Class hadn't begun yet, so many of the teenagers were talking or/and arguing with their friends. Of course, being soon-to-be trainers, most of the conversations were centered around that topic. Shouts of "Litten is totally better" we're constantly heard throughout the room, intermixed with "nuh-uh, Rowlet can fly!"

One such group was a combination of two boys and a girl.

One of the boys has short blond hair and blue eyes. He wears a silver hoodie unzipped. He has a cyan undershirt which goes well with his blue jeans. He wears an excited smile, and is constantly looking at the clock as if wanting it to go faster.

The boy sitting next to him has dark olive hair done up in a ridiculous hairstyle, according to him it was "traditional." He had sun-kissed skin and golden brown eyes. Wearing a black t-shirt as well as yellow shorts with two white flowers on it, he had a very "casual" appearance, like that of someone who was used to looking at life as something to be enjoyed. Right now he is frantically looking at his backpack, noticing that it is more empty than it should be.

The last of the group is a girl with curly black shoulder length hair with hazel eyes. She wears a red t-shirt with black shorts. She is scrolling through her SmartPhone with a huge smile on her face.

All the students in the classroom hear the bells chime, though they all continue to talk and make noise since the teacher has not yet arrived yet. The teenagers in the high school classroom are all shouting and chatting with each other, discussing inane things such as which Island Trial was the hardest, or which Kahuna was strongest.

"Alright alright everyone, quiet down." the teacher says. He takes another step forward before suddenly tripping and dropping the books in his hand. The students were used to their teacher dropping all of his supplies as he entered. Some kids would call him because of this.

"As you all know today is a very special day" the teacher says, recovering rather smoothly despite the embarrassing moment right before. "Corey Petterson, Hau Lui, Alexis Parsons...after this class is over, all of you will finally start your journeys as pokemon trainers. This is your final day." He smiles proudly at the three students.

"As your teacher, I'm so proud of you three. You all will become amazing trainers, I know it."

The teens start whispering to each other, comments like "who do you think will quit first," and "which one will become champion one day," permeating the classroom.

"I think Corey has the best chance to become a champion, after all he is top of our class" one guy whispers to his friend. "His dad defeated Kukui after all. There is no way he won't become an awesome trainer."

"No doubt" his bud responds. "Though Hau is amazing too. I can use the same argument saying he will be the best since his grandpa is our very own Kahuna, but if our class has shown anything, Corey will still be the best."

"I kinda feel bad for Alexis" the other student responds. "Don't get me wrong, she is alright, but those two completely outclass her. I'm not even sure she will complete the trials."

In the midst of their conversation, they don't notice the glower the black haired girl sends their way.

"Will the three of you come up and give us some words before class starts?" the teacher says. He turns to the children who are still whispering to each other. "And can the two students who are talking please be quiet so we can say our farewells."

The blonde boy flies up to the front of the room, smirking to his fellow students. "We all know I'm going to become champion. It is only a matter of time" he says in a cocky tone, unable to hide the excited grin off of his face.

"Uh-huh, confident as ever Corey" the olive haired boy responds, his eyes sparkling as if he's ready to show his rival which one of them truly is superior. "We all know that I will be champion, after all I have to be so I can surpass my grandpa." The class gives a large sigh as they have already heard that so many times.

"For Tapu's sake, will he just shut up about that" the same kid in the back whispers to his bud. "Like we get your grandpa is strong, but still you don't have to keep repeating it." His bud responds with a nod as they giggle to themselves.

The last of the three sixteen year olds walks up to the front of the classroom.

"You two will have to wait longer to win" the black haired girl states with confidence. She then stares at the back of the classroom, casting a mocking look at the duo that underestimated her. "I hope you realize that while I am going to finally become a trainer, you two are still trying to remember that Focus Blast doesn't affect Aegislash." (1)

The two boys become silent, trying to brush off the comment. Some of the class laughs because they all know how true that statement is.

The three wannabe trainers stare at each other before the teacher gestures to them to return to their seats. They continue the day, but the three of them can't focus on any of the lessons, not that it mattered.

Finally the bell chimes for the final time. All the children spring through the doors excited to play and jump around. Corey and Alexis all walk out together since they will be receiving their pokemon together so they will walk together.

Did you really need to yell at all of them Alexis?" Corey asks. "I thought they were going to freak out, and complain."

"It kinda came out." the black haired girl shrugs. "I didn't mean to, I just got mad when they mentioned I couldn't stand on the same level as you guys."

"You guys did tell your parents that we are seeing my grandpa to receive our first Pokemon right?" Hau asks as he runs over to the pair, bending over to catch his breath.

"Hau, bruh, stop worrying about us forgetting that, after all, need I remind you that you're the one who forgot your books this morning." the blonde hair boy replies drily.

"Didn't you also almost pull an all-nighter just last night, till your mom found out and chewed you out?" Alexis asks giggling.

"Oh come on, I was excited, after all today we finally begin our journey, which is where we should start heading to instead of you two roasting me" Hau states in a very serious tone.

"Oh chill out," Corey smiles. "I know you are just as excited as we are. We both just are messing with you. Yes, of course we told our parents...if anything my mom probably was going insane how much I was talking about it."

"If only he was here to see this" Alexis reminisces. "It would be so nice to have both parents who have been looking forward to this day, especially a trainer as amazing as Roy. I loved watching his matches against the Kahunas and Kukui."

Corey's smile wilts a bit at that.

"...Yeah" the blonde boy sighs. "Nothing I can do about it though. The police already told us they couldn't find him anywhere here. So I'm just going to focus on becoming a trainer myself."

"Guuuys let's get going" Hau chimes in. "I want to get my first pokemon already." The meetup point they are going to is Iki town, the home of the island Kahuna. It is also the spot where all new trainers from traditionally receive their first pokemon. There are always plenty of options for starter pokemon, and the island kahuna raises and decides what pokemon that is.

The three start heading up the green lush hill along the dirt road, seeing Rattatas and Yungooses roaming in the grass while Pikipeks fly above in the clear blue sky.

However all is not well and good. Their peaceful walk is interrupted by a kid with short brown hair, who runs up to Corey.

Skidding to a halt the kid points his finger at the blonde haired trainer, and yells out accusingly, "Where is your kneecap pride mister!"

There is a moment of awkward silence. The three friends look at each other.

" Uh... kid what does that even mean?" Corey furrows his brow with a confused look on his face.

The kid goes wide eyed.

"Mister you are the only one who is not showing his knee caps, and you are wearing a jacket in the summer, how are you not hot?" the kid exclaims with a surprised expression.

"But it's not even that hot out, plus this jacket keeps me nice and warm." Corey states.

It was a cloudless sunny day. Hau and Alexis synchronously wiped away the sweat on their foreheads

The kid sprints as fast as lightning away from Corey crying out "Mommy this weird jacket wearer is creeping me out!" The group watches him run until he's out of sight before letting out a collective eye-roll as they continue on the trip up the hill.

"I swear one day your gonna get a stroke wearing that jacket." Alexis says as they continue to walk up the hill.

"Again, I don't get the problem, if I'm not hot, why should I take it off?" Corey says with a confused look on his face. "I've hanged out with Dad's fire types so much that this heat barely bothers me."

As they get to the top of the hill they are greeted by a small staircase with a wooden arch. As they head to the center of the town they see a wooden platform with a very large man on it.

He is wearing a yellow open top with a blue undershirt and a white rope around his waist that looks like a belt. He has gray samurai-like hair and a mustache. His posture, and more importantly, the air around him, all point to a sense of authority that this figure possesses.

"Oh there you are, I was beginning to worry that I may be here forever waiting" the man says. "I am the island kahuna Hala, though I'm sure you guys already knew that. Today is a very special day for the three of you."

"Hey grandpa!" Hau yells out while jumping and waving his arms about.

"Ah, my boy, I know you're excited like your two friends, but before you and your partner choose each other I must ask this" Hala states. "This journey will be long and tough, you will see a great many wondrous sights, meet a great many people and fight lots of hard battles, and will have to discover yourself as you learn new things. Are you all prepared for this journey through the Alola region?"

"YES!" they all shout with confident and excited looks on their faces.

"Very well, then I will show you the pokemon that are to be your partners throughout your journey" Hala says with a smile. Three red and white spheres release from his hand and from within the pokeballs three pokemon come out onto the wooden stage.

"Meet Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio." The three friends look on in awe knowing that one of these pokemon will become their partners.

"Now please walk upon the stage and see which one of them bonds and connects with you the most, once you both choose each other you will become partners." Hala continues on. The aspiring trainers excitedly go upon the stage and they start interacting with the pokemon.

Rowlet starts flying above them going from shoulder to shoulder, seeing where he feels most comfortable, eventually it dives straight into Corey's backpack, before promptly closing his eyes and starting to snore softly.

"Oh, so I guess you have chosen me" The blonde boy says. "Well let's do our best to become champions one day."

Rowlet, being asleep, obviously doesn't respond.

Meanwhile Litten is walking around, sniffing the three sixteen year olds before deciding to start rubbing against Alexis' leg. She picks up the Pokémon with a happy smile on her face.

"Thank you for picking me. With you by my side, I will finally become a trainer," says the black haired girl, grinning widely. The fire cat lets out a happy purr and starts rubbing himself against her arms.

Meanwhile Popplio makes a small water bubble and he passes it to Hau. As the olive haired boy goes to touch it, the bubble instantly pops. The sea lion lets out a barking laugh and claps its flippers together. Hau picks up the pokemon and immediately gets pelted with another bubble, immediately soaking both his face and hair and causing the boy to giggle.

"You're a trickster aren't you" Hau says. "I can't wait to start battling. With you, I know I can surpass Grandpa as a trainer."

Hala looks at the three with a huge smile. "Today is your first step as pokemon trainers. I will warn you, your journey will be hard. I know tonight will be a lot of fun, so enjoy it to the fullest. You three will have nothing to worry about, I believe you will all become great pokemon trainers."

As the three new trainers look at their new pokemon with wonder and awe, they hear the sound of running footsteps quickly approaching. As they turn, their eyes widened as they beheld the man that could very well be one of the biggest celebrities in the entire Alola region

"Sorry I'm late" the person yelled out as he sprinted up to the island kahuna. He is wearing a white lab coat with a Rockruff following close behind him. His frame was easily recognizable and all three trainers felt their jaws drop as they saw the legendary Professor Kukui himself. The mighty champion of Alola.

Trailing behind the champion was a blonde girl wearing a white dress. She had bright green eyes and a slightly worried expression on her face.

"Ah, professor Kukui, you've finally made it." He mock glared at the sheepish professor. "Is there any reason why you are late?`" questions Hala.

"Sorry about that Hala. Me and my Rockruff were training our moves for tonight's festival." the pokemon professor says while doing a pose with his pokemon. The Rockruff barks affirmatively and wags its tail, clearly agreeing with what Kukui said.

"When I was done I ran over here with an Extreme Speed" continued the professor, gesticulating passionately all the while. Finishing up his explanation, he turns to the teenagers.

"So you three are the ones who received pokemon today. My name is Kukui, though I'm guessing you probably already knew that. I can't wait to see your moves during the battles tonight!" He gestures to the girl behind him. "This is Lillie, she's my assistant."

The blonde haired girl comes out behind Kukui and says " It's nice to meet all of you" with a shy voice. She wears a white hat and dress. When she look at Corey she strangely goes silent and appears almost as if she is reminiscing.

"Wait, are you also battling tonight professor?" Corey asks excitedly. "If so, that makes tonight that much more amazing." Corey takes a second to realize what he just said. The actual champion will be battling with them. It's unbelievable.

"Of course," the professor said. "There are only three of you and it wouldn't be fun if someone fought with a disadvantage, thus I, the mighty Masked Ro-…ahem, I Professor Kukui will be the fourth competitor!"

"Any idea who exactly is battling who tonight?" Alexis asks.

"Great question," the island kahuna nods. "We will announce the matchups tonight. In the real world you won't know who your opponent is or who they use, so we are trying to replicate that tonight."

"That makes sense," the black haired girl responds. "It will make the festival much more interesting."

Hau looks at the blonde girl and decides to finally say something to her. "Hey Lillie, are you a trainer too?" he asks.

"Um...I'm not" she quietly says. "I have a pokemon, but I'm not as amazing as you guys. I could never become a trainer."

"Don't Cut yourself short Lillie" Kukui reassures. "You are as just knowledgeable as me in pokemon. Heck you may even know more than me about some stuff." He turns to the three trainers. "If you ever need anything and you see Lillie, don't be afraid to ask her anything. You won't find anyone better."

"Awesome!" Hau excitedly yells and looks at Lillie "I hope we become great friends during our adventure." The blonde girl just goes back behind Kukui, shy from that explosive voice Hau has.

"Alright, calm down Hau" says Alexis, pulling her friend back. "You don't want to scare the Litwicks out of her. You have a habit of doing that."

"Sorry about that Lille, I'm just so excited I got a little carried away." the brown haired boy says in an apologetic voice.

"Please don't worry about it," the blond haired girl quietly says. "You did not do anything wrong. It is my fault for overreacting like that."

"Well, I'm gonna start heading off now," Corey chimes in. "I need to prepare as much as possible to defeat any of you.

"Well then Corey" Hau states confidently. "I hope I battle you, after all I need to show you who is the best trainer of the three of us!" His Popplio proceeded to show his agreement by clapping his flippers and firing yet another bubble at his trainer, soaking him yet again.

"Look, as much as you two want to battle each other, I am not gonna let that happen!" Alexis says in response to Hau. "I want to be the one to defeat one of you."

"I don't really care who I battle" the blonde boy says. "I'll win no matter what." As if sharing his confidence, rowlet let out a particularly loud snore.

"I guess I am the fourth Flame Wheel here" the pokemon professor says to Lillie. "That right there" he says pointing to the three of them "those three will be future Masters one day, I can feel it."

"But Professor, how can you tell so quickly?" Lillie asks with a confused look on her face. "They haven't had their first battle yet."

"Call it a gut feeling, but no matter what, this generation will lead to some great trainers from all over the world" Kukui says. "I can't wait to see their moves at the pokemon league."

"Well, you lively bunch you should start heading home now" chimes in the island kahuna. "You will need as much time as possible to prepare so best to start sooner rather than later."

"Yes sir!" the three young trainers yell, with excitement in their eyes. Corey starts to run back to his house, before he is stopped by the professor's voice.

"Now, before you three leave I have something to give you." Kukui says to the three while motioning to Lille to get something. He hands them a red flip phone-like item."These are your pokedexes, with these you will be able to see what moves your pokemon knows as well as other useful information."

"Oh crap," Corey says as he runs back to the group.

"How could you forget something that important?" Alexis shakes her head at Corey with an exasperated expression on her face. She looks at her pokedex with a huge smile. "I never thought I would actually have one, but here I am."

"My bad, I forgot, I got so excited getting our first pokemon that I kinda, ya know, blanked on it" the blonde haired trainer says in response after thanking the professor for the pokedex. The three new trainers head their separate ways to return to their homes. They only had a few hours before tonight, so they needed to prepare as much as possible.

...

"Mom, I'm home" yelled Corey as he entered his home. It was a modest two story wooden house, made in the classic rustic "Alolan" style. Simple and similar to many other homes on Melemele.

"Welcome home dear," Corey's mom said as she came to see her boy. She has blonde short hair and is wearing a blue shirt and black jeans. "You got your first pokemon, right. Who did you get?"

Corey turns around to show off Rowlet sleeping in his sling bag. The little owl shifted slightly, making himself comfy inside of the bag.

"He likes sleeping in there for some reason, but hopefully he doesn't sleep all day cause we need to get to work as soon as possible.

"Aww he's so cute," his mom cooed, gently petting Rowlet, causing the grass type to shift once more and let out a small snort in his sleep.

"I bet you're excited for tonight, aren't you." At her continued petting, Rowlet wakes up and starts flying around the house, exploring the new environment. Eventually the little owl bonks itself into a large clock on the wall, causing a little wooden Pikipek to come out. Letting out an indignant hoot, Rowlet dives back into Corey's bag and to rest.

"Alrighty, let's see what moves you know" Corey says with an excited look on his face. He opens the pokedex and starts to scan Rowlet, showing him an entire page about the pokemon including what moves he knows.

Rowlet, the Grass Quill Pokemon. It feels relaxed in tight, dark places and has been known to use its Trainers' coat pockets or bag as a nest. This Rowlet is male. It's known moves are Tackle, Growl, Leafage, and the Egg Move Confuse Ray. It's ability is Overgrow which raises the power of its Grass-Type moves in a pinch.

"Huh...I was not expecting him to have Confuse Ray," Corey thought to himself after reading the Pokédex entry. "That should be helpful as a fun surprise for tonight's battles if I need it."

...

"Alright I got my potions, my pokeballs, and my camping supplies." Corey thinks to himself excitedly as he goes to zip up his bag, before realizing that Rowlet was still inside of it. "You really like this bag don't you?" Rowlet flutters his feathers with a happy look on his face, though his eyes are still closed.

As Corey starts to open the front door, his mom comes into the room looking at her son with a proud look on her face. "You know, you remind me of your father" with a tear streaking down the side of her face, before hurriedly wiping it away.

Corey felt a bit of a pain in his chest upon seeing his mom cry. "Mom, you know that is part of the reason I'm doing this." he says, giving his mom a hug. "I am going to become champion and be able to search for him."

"Just don't disappear like he did, and please keep in touch with me so I know you're alright, ok," his mother responds. "He would be so proud of you if he were here. Your father was looking forward to this day, maybe even more than you. So please just don't do anything dangerous."

"Of course Mom, I promise" Corey says with a determined look on his face. "I promise you that I will be safe. Why would I want to put myself in harm's way when there are police for that. I'm not trying to be some overachieving hero." He said hero as if it were something disgusting. "Plus I will be with Alexis, so nothing will go wrong. If anything does happen I will call you right away, though that won't happen."

"Thank you" she says with a smile on her face.

"Well anyways I'll be off, I will see you when you get there" Corey says while raising his fist in the air. "I will win, I have to," he says quietly to himself. "I have to become stronger than Dad in order to find and bring him back home. Maybe I'll find Uncle G as well...there is no way he is actually dead."

His thoughts drift away as he remembers his childhood, and the battles that surrounded him back then…

A young Corey watches in amazement as two trainers face off. He and his mother were at the annual league tournament and the preliminary match, to get everyone in the sold out crowd excited for all the matches coming up, was about to get started. As little Corey looks around his eyes fall on to the person sitting next to them. A man with white messy hair. He wears a black jacket and sweatpants as well as a white undershirt.

He sees his father standing in one end of the arena. Roy Petterson is wearing a purple over jacket, a black undershirt and black long pants. His hair is brown and spiky with the same color eyes as his son. In the eyes of little Corey, his father appears as the greatest trainer and person of all time.

Roy's opponent is the champion himself...Kukui. He wears his iconic white lab coat with no undershirt as well as gray shorts and a white cap.

Each side only has one pokemon left. In front of Roy is a monstrous Typhlosion. His pokemon's neck flames are fuming at such high power that the entire battlefield is engulfed in immolating heat, scorching winds slamming against the psychic barriers with each breath the massive fire type takes. His opponent is the fastest pokemon owned by a trainer in all of Alola. A Lycanroc in its midday form. Both pokemon are breathing heavily, and it seems that this battle is in its final moments.

Corey enthusiastically watches his Dad's most powerful pokemon. This is the fourth battle of a best of seven with Kukui up three to zero. The boy knew that Kukui was the better trainer, but was it too much to ask for his dad to win? He wanted these two to battle forever just because of how close and intense these battles are!

"Solar Blast" Roy desperately calls out. Using the intense sunlight his pokemon set up earlier, Typhlosion starts charging up an attack. Though, could the force of nature about to be unleashed really be called a mere attack? That was something everyone in the audience would wonder for a long time.

In the massive Fire-Type's maw is a mix of red, green, and orange colors. An orb of superheated temperatures so obscene it approached the level of plasma in its pure power. The volcano pokemon lets out a horrific roar and unleashes a Kanji shaped inferno, white hot and so bright it blinds many in the audience. Following it is a green beam of pure light being fired a mere fraction of a second later. This is a combination of Typhlosion's strongest attacks, Solar Beam and Fire Blast. A devastating strike that can easily level buildings and causes a massive trench in the floor of the arena as it passes above the ground, the sheer force of the blast eviscerating the earth beneath it.

Kukui frantically calls out a command to get out of the way, but the exhausted Lycanroc's legs give out and it is forced to take the attack head on, vanishing in the massive explosion. A large dust cloud is formed and as soon as it settles, the arena erupts.

"The champion has been defeated!" a loud and excited male voice yells out over a speaker phone. "This best of seven contest will continue next week! This is the upset of the decade!"

In the stands, among the screaming audience, little Corey watches with stars in his eyes, and the biggest grin on his face. 'I want to be just like that one day' he thinks to himself. 'I want to be as strong as Dad and Uncle G!'

...

"I'm home" Alexis yells to her family as she enters her house. She runs up the stairs to her room, with Litten bounding right behind her. As they both enter her room, they are greeted with all of her supplies already packed in her bag.

'How thoughtful of them' she smiles to herself. 'They're so supportive of me being a trainer. This feeling of being able to do what I want...It's wonderful. I love it so much.'

"Alright let's see what you're all about Litten." Alexis says to her newly acquired pokemon. She opened up her Pokedex and read off the entry on her new companion.

Litten, the Fire Cat Pokemon. Its coat regrows twice a year. When the time comes, Litten sets its own body on fire and burns away the old fur. This Litten is a Male. Its known moves are Scratch, Growl, Ember, and the Egg Move Revenge. Its ability is Blaze which raises the power of its fire moves in a pinch.

"Wow Revenge" the girl wonders. "That's amazing. I didn't expect you to know such a strong move right from the get go." She knew what the move Revenge did of course. In school their class learned about all types of moves, which the teacher insisted was going to be super useful. No one disagreed with him.

The Litten purrs in response to his new trainer's praise and starts padding around like it's ready to battle. "I guess we are both ready for tonight" Alexis says as she starts petting the Litten.

A knock on the door interrupts her. "May we come in?" a female voice calls out.

"Yeah, of course, come on in," Alexis turns around. The door opens up and a couple, a middle aged man and woman, walks into the room, closing the door slowly after seeing that the pokemon is a cat, trying not to startle the new arrival. Hearing the noise, Litten lets out a meow to signify its displeasure for not being petted any longer.

For a moment the couple simply watches the little fire-type with smiles on their faces, then the man takes a deep sigh and turns toward Alexis.

"Are you sure you want to go on this adventure?" he questions with a concerned look on his face. "I know this is your dream, trust me, I do, but I don't want anything to happen to you. You know it is a dangerous world out there, and I don't want anything to happen to my daughter."

"I've come this far haven't I?" Alexis questions back, wondering why this is still a topic. "I was in the top three of my class so why would I quit? I've wanted to do this since I was a kid, so there is no way I'm backing away now!" she says with a determined look on her face, and a certain confidence in her voice.

"I told you she would say this" her mother says with a proud look on her face. "Just look at her now, she really was born to become a trainer."

"You're, right like always," her father says, going to hug his daughter. "You are traveling with Corey and Hau right?"

Alexis taps her chin in thought, "Actually, I think Hau wants to be on his own" she says, thinking back to a conversation they had a week ago. "Me and Corey are still planning on traveling with each other though, so there is nothing to worry about."

"Alright. We will leave so you can prepare for tonight. Good luck," her mother said smiling, a tear making its way down her face. "You have come so far, and I'm so proud that you are finally becoming a trainer." Her parents left the room and a sniffing sound echoed in the hall, but quickly grew quiet.

…..

On the way to Iki town Corey can hear the sounds of music start blasting from up the hill. Corey, not wanting to be late, starts bolting up, completely ignoring a father complaining about him messing with his son. The only thing on his mind is how he's going to win tonight. He finally gets up and takes a moment to catch his breath before entering Iki town. His faithful partner Rowlet, meanwhile, was still asleep in the backpack.

'Dangit, I hope I'm not late' Corey thinks to himself, panicking at the thought that he might have missed the announcement of matches. Once he finally makes it, he sees Hau, waving to him. The Olive haired boy sprints over to him, nearly jumping from excitement.

"I am shocked you are the last one to get here" Hau said to Corey, laughing. Noticing his buddie's worried expression, he shakes his head. "Don't worry, you're not late, in fact matches will be announced shortly."

Corey lets out a huge sigh of relief in the news. "I'm so excited to start battling," the blonde says excitedly. "I have been waiting way too long for this day."

The two friends enter the town, and they see what seems to be over fifty people in the square. Corey has been to festivals before, but today...today is special.

"Can I get everyone's attention please" a familiar voice calls out. It was Hala speaking to the massive crowd that were attending this event. Corey and Hau quickly run to the town square where they meet up with Alexis who had beaten them both and was already there, looking very smug about it.

"Today we gather on a joyous occasion. To celebrate the beginning of the journey for three new talents. Three aspiring trainers who will attempt to undertake the Island Challenge! As per tradition, it is my job to oversee three new challengers. Today will be the start of their journey, the foundation of their future!"

At his words the crowd explodes in cheers.

"Can Corey, Alexis, Hau, and our very own professor Kukui please come up to the stage?" Hala says while surveying the crowd. The four come up to the stage with lots of kids from their class cheering for who they want to win. Most of the chants are for Corey, though, of course, lots of cheers are for the champion. It made sense to Corey as seeing someone like Kukui battle up and close is unreal.

"I will now announce the matchups" Hala says as he takes a piece of paper that his Crabrawler gives him. "Thank you my friend,'' he whispers to his pokemon, tapping its fist-claw with his finger as he unfolds the paper.

"The first matchup will be between Corey and Hau, while the second match will be Alexis and Kukui," the island kahuna says to a loud uproar. "Now, young ones, take your spots and pass the first of many trials you will face along your journey.

Corey and Hau walk to opposite sides of the platform, eyes locked all the way as the two trainers get into position. Sounds of cheering could be heard all around the crowd as everyone's excitement surged to see these two square off.

"Here we go, the start of my legend," Hau says, jumping up and down in excitement. "Go, Popplio" he yells as he throws his pokeball. Popplio materializes and claps with his flippers, making a small water balloon to show off.

"Alright then, let's do this, go Rowlet" the blonde boy yells out as well. His backpack starts shaking and what seems like an eternity, his starter finally flies out of the bag. The little grass owl flutters his wings and locks eyes with his first opponent.

"Alright Popplio, get up on your rear flipper and use Water Gun!" Hau instructs the water type pokemon. The sea lion fires a stream of water from its red nose towards the grass owl. Even though this was its first battle, its accuracy wasn't off and the attack was on target, the stream quickly blasting toward Rowlet's location.

Corey wasn't too concerned by the attack though. He had two distinct advantages in the battle. The first Rowlet is a Grass-Type which works perfectly against a water type like Popplio. The other advantage is that his pokemon can fly.

"Rowlet, fly up" the trainer calls out. The grass quill pokemon flies right above the stream of water, completely avoiding the attack. The blonde boy smiles from this. His first command as a pokemon trainer. "Time for offense. Rowlet, use Leafage." The grass type starter fires a glowing group of leaves, pelting the land-bound Popplio.

Hau winces from seeing that super effective attack, but he had no time to feel bad. "Popplio, Aqua Ring" the olive haired boy responds. With a bark, the sea lion surrounds himself in a veil of water, healing some of the wounds from the attack.

"Bet you weren't expecting that move Corey" the kahuna's grandchild says with a cocky voice. "I have plenty of more tricks. Don't expect to roll over me just because you have a type advantage!"

"That wasn't bad," Corey shrugs. "But if you think just sitting back and healing will win, especially when you're battling against me, then you're mistaken." He turns to his partner. "Rowlet, one more Leafage."

"Popplio, use Growl quickly!" Hau desperately yells out. The sea lion's growl echoes throughout the square causing his opponent to lose focus and nullifies the attack before it can even be used. The kahuna's grandson has a huge smile on his face. "Now, follow up with a Water Gun!" Once again Popplio fires a stream of water towards the grass type. This is Hau's only real attack option since his pokemon can't fly.

"Rowlet, spin around that Water Gun and use Tackle" Corey yells out boldly, throwing out his arm. The grass quill pokemon dives down and spins out of the way of the attack. It flies in a spiral around the Water Gun, accelerating in a dive, and connects with a powerful attack, especially from a pokemon in its first battle. Popplio is sent tumbling back, barely able to stand back up, while Rowlet flies back to hover right above his trainer.

By this point the crowd was watching the battle with fascination. Many of the kids from Corey and Hau's class were beginning to get hype. No one was expecting such a fancy move from a rookie. Even Hala and Kukui are somewhat surprised by this attack.

Corey can see the fire disappearing from his rival's eyes. If he was in Hau's situation, he would wait for his opponent to make the first move, but that isn't something he has to worry about. Though he is curious if he can bait his friend.

"Let's finish this" Corey cockily states. "Rowlet, be ready to dodge" the whispers to his pokemon.

Out loud he yells, "Rowlet, charge in one more time." The grass quill pokemon flies towards his opponent ready for anything.

"Use Pound" a somewhat deflated Hau says. Popplio raises his flipper up to slam his opponent in the face. Hau didn't wasn't prepared for what Corey was about to do.

"Do a somersault," the blonde boy smirks. At the last moment Rowlet flies in a circle, avoiding the last ditch effort by Hau. "Finish this with Leafage." One last sharp leaf, and the battle was over. Popplio falls to the ground, unconscious.

The crowd erupts, though a lot of the students expected a much closer battle. They always thought of those two on an equal level, but this battle wasn't even close.

"That was an exciting battle" Hala comments. "I can see clearly both of you have the potential to become great trainers. I can't wait to face you both after you pass the normal type trial here on Melemele island."

Hau returns Popplio to his pokeball, frustrated from this result. He leaves the stage and heads away from the crowd. Hala notices this and follows.

"It is ok to lose" Hala wisely says, patting his grandson on the shoulder. "This battle won't change anything. I know you will become stronger from this result."

"But he embarrassed me," Hau says with tears in his eyes. "I didn't get a single hit in. He was just showing off at the end, and I was just…just sitting there."

"Do you want that to happen again?" the island kahuna asks. Hau looks at him with a confused look. "Now that you have tasted defeat, I know you will become even stronger. Next time I know you will show your strength." The two of them embrace in a hug and head back towards the crowd.

Meanwhile Corey is on the stage celebrating his first victory. Hopefully a first of many. A tired Rowlet flies back into his trainer's back and somehow falls asleep despite the post-battle excitement and the buzz in Iki town.

'That was for you Dad…Uncle G' the blonde trainer thinks to himself. 'Wherever you are, I hope you are watching. Someday, I will become a strong trainer just like you two.'

Hala steps back on the stage as Corey exits. As the blonde trainer exits, he hears the island kahua whisper "I understand it is your first battle, but try to refrain from showing off like that in the future." Corey nods and walks off.

"Will Alexis and Kukui please come to the stage?" the island kahuna finally asks. "It is time for the second and last battle in tonight's festival." Corey is excited yet jealous of Alexis. He was happy to defeat Hau, but the fact she gets to battle the Champion himself makes him a bit envious.

The two trainers lock eyes. "It is so nice to face a new trainer," Kukui excitedly says. "No matter how many times I face new trainers just like this...it always makes me feel like I am beginning my own journey once again. Rockruff, let us show them our moves." The puppy pokemon is released from his pokeball and barks to a loud ovation from the crowd.

Alexis can barely hold in her excitement. She originally wanted to battle one of her friends, but facing the champion is just a huge honor, Most people never get this opportunity and even though he isn't fighting at his "max" it doesn't matter. It is still the champion.

"It is our first battle" Alexis said quietly to her pokeball. "Let us win and start our journey on the right foot. This is my first step to becoming a trainer." She locks eyes with Kukui. "Litten, let's do this." The fire cat pokemon materializes and meows at his opponent.

"Alright Rockruff, use Tackle!" Kukui calls out. The rock type pokemon runs towards his opponent at full speed. It is such a simple attack, but that doesn't stop the crowd from watching so closely.

"Stand your ground Litten" Alexis calls out to everyone's surprise. Rockruff connects with the attack, sending the fiery feline sliding backwards. "Fire back with Revenge!" Using the energy from the Tackle, Litten uses its amateur understanding of Fighting-Type Ki and sends the energy of its own attack plus some more back at Rockruff. The puppy pokemon is sent flying back right next to Kukui.

"That was an amazing move!" the professor says in awe. "I didn't expect your Litten to know that. Plus the fact it trusted you so quickly is impressive. My Litten didn't even begin to warm-up to me until a couple of weeks together."

"Thank you" the black haired girl says. She quickly regains focus on what she is going to do next. She can't get caught up in anything else besides winning. "Litten, keep up the heat! Use Ember." The fire cat pokemon spits a ball of fire towards the Rock-Type pokemon.

"Dodge, then counter with Thunder Fang!" Kukui responds. Rockruff quickly jumps out of the way, then in mere seconds it forms a fang out of electricity. Alexis has zero time to react and her first pokemon is hit with the powerful electric attack, as the rock puppy's jaws clamp down on Litten's back.

"Litten!" Alexis exclaims, panic in her voice. The fire cat shakes off the attack and turns to his trainer, ready to continue the battle.

"Let's shock them with some more moves buddy" the pokemon professor says. "Use Leer." Rockruff sends in intimidating glare towards the fire cat, causing it to flinch. "Charge in and use Tackle." Continuing the onslaught the puppy pokemon charges in head first.

"Litten, use Ember" the black haired trainer desperately calls out. Shaking off the glare, the fire type once again shoots a ball of heat towards his opponent. Surprised by this and with little time to react, Rockruff gets engulfed in the attack. "Great job Litten!"

"Rockruff, rock-on and show off your Thunder Fang" Kukui commands. The puppy pokemon makes another sparking fang and goes for another devastating attack.

"Get out of the way" Alexis cries out. At the last possible second Litten dodges his opponents attack, leaving Rockruff wide open. "Now use Scratch." The fire cat slashes at the rock type causing him to wince in pain.

"Respond with a Tackle" the champion grins. Rockruff connects with a powerful attack, sending Litten back. Both Pokémon's breathing becomes heavy. The crowd roars in excitement. This is what they expected, a close battle with lots of back and forth. Though none of the students can believe Alexis is the one managing this against Kukui.

"Time to finish this Rockruff" Kukui claims. "Use Thunderfang, one more time!"

"Litten, use Revenge" The black haired girl responds. She knows that this attack won't be as strong as before, but it is the best option because of her opponent's type.

Both attacks collide with both pokemon still standing, backs turned. Suddenly one of the bodies hits the ground and the crowd erupts in shock. The pokemon still standing is Litten. The little fire type looks up and yowls in victory. Everyone in Alexis's class is freaking out, screaming and chanting Alexis's name as both Corey and Hau run up to the stage to congratulate their friend.

Alexis runs over to pick up her pokemon, a happy smile threatening to split her face as joy bubbles up from her heart. "We did it! We actually won!" the girl whoops with excitement. Litten meows and starts rubbing himself against her leg, purring happily. Corey goes in to pet the fire-type pokemon, but withdraws when it hisses at him.

"That is a normal response," Kukui laughs. The champion has taken the time to return his pokemon to its pokeball and was now back to his laid-back Professor mode. "Littens in general take a while to trust people, so the fact that this one already trusts his trainer is amazing."

"Congratulations" Hala says from behind Kukui. "Now that you have completed your first official battle as trainers, I have a gift for all of you." The island kahuna presents the three each a white bracelet which the three put on. "These are your Z-Rings, with these you will be able to fully connect with your pokemon using powerful attacks known throughout Alola as Z-Moves. Now go, go have fun as tomorrow you begin your journey as Island Trial challengers."

The trio of teenagers excitedly put on the white bracelets, and for the next few hours, they enjoy the festival, partying and relaxing. After a while Hau leaves with his grandpa to their house, though Corey and Alexis have no idea why.

"I still can't believe tomorrow is the day," the black haired girl says. "This has been my dream for forever. I can't believe it is actually happening..."

"Yeah, yeah I get that" Corey responds. "I'm gonna get strong just like Dad and Uncle G. And then, when I find Dad...I will defeat him in a battle."

This is only the start of their journey. Corey and Alexis with their new partners are ready to finally travel the region. They know they will have to face many challenges and trials that will shake their foundations. Yet with each other and their pokemon, they find themselves certain that no matter what they will face, there is nothing they can't overcome.

Hey guys, this is the remake of chapter one if you couldn't tell. If you never read the original then that's good because it was awful. I was a noob writer back then, and my quality was LVL 2 Caterpie. The old chapter was nowhere near my current standards and I am ashamed of it. If you are new here then welcome and I hope you enjoy the following chapters.
