Summary: Our young muggle raised main character with no idea about the existence of another world finds out that magic is real and she'll be heading to a magical school come September as a half-blood student. She has no idea her school year starts with a monster running rampant around the school. And there's also that ginger haired girl... seems like there's investigation to be done. But first, she needs friends to go on this adventure with her...

July 1992.

Surrey.

"Edel! Snap out of it young lady, you're straying too far!"

Edel sighed as she shook herself out of her thoughts.

It would be her 11th birthday soon on the 5th of July and she'd be starting her secondary schooling at The Magna Carta secondary school come September.

Edelweiss Hawthorne, more known as Edel, moved as the soft music played around the ballet studio and she endured the slight pain she was feeling till the song finally ended and the coach clapped in satisfaction.

"And that's a wrap for today younglings!"

Edel sighed as she sat on the floor, breathing out, along with some select few.

"I hope to see you all again next week and make sure you all practice the fifth position! I'll know if you don't."

She sternly added and a large portion of the students gulped as she walked away.

Mrs. Andrews was a total slave driver.

She was a great ballet coach though and anyone who wanted to make a living out of doing this would find a great teacher and mentor in her.

Edel though, wasn't too sure she was interested in following a career in it yet, even though she was one of the good ones.

She smiled.

She found that she was more interested in eating a high amount of sugar and junk foods than keeping a 'certain weight' for an upcoming dance recital.

"See you later Edel!"

An acquaintance of hers called out as she ran out of the studio, bag in hand and Edel could only raise a hand.

She idly wondered what her birthday would be like.

Would there be any difference she'd notice?

Maybe she'd suddenly grow in height as she was presently 4'9.

She'd always wanted to grow tall and she hoped she'd be able to, after all, her mother was petite at just 5'4 and she has no idea how tall her birth father was.

See, Edel's father died a few months after she was born. He had been some kind of a police officer according to her mom and his parents had also died months before he passed.

Basically she knew next to nothing about her birth father, only that his name was Thomas Hawthorne.

Edel sat up as she removed her pointe shoes and wore her comfy sandals, putting her pointe in her backpack and leaving the studio.

It was quite sunny.

Cars drove to and fro and some shops opened and closed around her.

Edel lived in Number 8, Avondale Avenue, Staines-upon-Thames, in Spelthorn district, Surrey.

She lived in a nice 4 bedroom red brick home with a nice garden which even though it wasn't all that big, had it's own mini gazebo.

Edel lived with her mother Laurel Roberts, her step dad, Anthony 'Tony', and her half brother Louis.

They were a normal family, or rather yet, as normal as can be.

Edel's father died when she was just a few months old and before she met her father, her mother had hooked up with Anthony which led to Louis who was 3 years older than her. They had equal guardianship over Louis even when her mother married her own father. But when Edel was 4, they got married.

Edel used to suspect her half brother wasn't a fan of her because her mother would have stayed with her own father if he was still alive, but as the years grew by, she just put it to him being a boy. And now that he was a teenager, he was even more unbearable with his cool boy act that was mostly painful to watch.

The studio was just a street away and Edel had been deemed trustworthy enough to walk home by herself without straying from her destination.

As she jogged into the house and closed the door—more like slammed—her mom's voice resonated from the kitchen.

"Edelweiss Hawthorne! How many times have I told you not to slam the door! You have no job to pay for it if you break it down!"

Edel rolled her eyes as she walked into the kitchen to see her mom going through a recipe and baking ingredients scattered around the kitchen island counter.

"Mum, I'm strong but not that strong. What are you doing?"

"Hm? Oh I'm trying to bake a chocolate cake for your birthday tomorrow."

Edel sighed.

"Can't we just buy one like a normal person would?"

Laurel huffed disagreeing.

"No, because I want this one to be special. 11 is a super important age after all, and you'll soon be going far away and…"

Laurel sniffled and Edel looked at her mother with a frown.

"Mom calm down, I'm only going to Magna Carta, you know. Just a few blocks from here. It's not like I'm getting married."

She snorted and her mother blinked tears away, waving her off.

"Don't worry dear. You'll understand soon enough."

Edel looked at her mother weirdly as she went back to selecting ingredients, a big smile on her face and not for the first time, she wondered if her mother was bipolar or something.

With a shrug, she went up the stairs to her room, cracking her neck and sighing as she walked through the hallway.

As she passed her brother's room though, she paused as she looked through it. The door was partially opened and Louis was on the new phone their parents had gotten them both to use but he had colonized, he was on his feet, striking a pose and brushing his hand through his curly brown hair, forcing on a deep voice.

"Yeah… yeah I'm pretty cool aren't I?"

Edel snickered uncontrollably which startled Louis into dropping the phone, a look of shock on his face which gradually changed to anger as he walked to the door and slammed it angrily.

"You kids be careful! You're not earning enough to repair a door!!"

Her mom shouted and Edel snickered as she imagined a fuming Louis in his room trying to salvage whatever conversation he'd been having.

She sighed as she entered her room. He could keep the phone, she was saving money to get the touch tone phone anyways.

She then proceeded to take a shower in the bathroom she shared with her brother and the spare guest room and then took a little nap.

When she woke up, the sky was already slightly darker, meaning it was already evening time.

She went down the stairs and saw her stepdad was already back from work. He was a doctor and had really weird shifts but today must have been a slow day.

"Hey Dad!"

She greeted him as she got down and Anthony looked up from the soccer match on the TV and smiled at her.

"Hey little red. Slept like the dead you did yeah?"

He joked and Edel put out her tongue at him as she settled down next to him and he patted her head.

Their relationship was a pretty nice one. He was like a cool uncle to her but after growing up with him, she'd gotten used to calling him dad. He was the only father figure she remembered after all. But that didn't mean she forgot her birth father, no. She knew she looked like Thomas Hawthorne, with her curly deep red hair that fell in waves to her waist and ended in ringlets.

She also had a peculiar color of eyes which were almost gold yet amber like and she loved it a lot. In fact she thought it to be her most discerning feature though her mom said that was her hair. She had ivory skin and no freckles. And was petite in a way.

Her stepdad and brother looked the same. With curly brown hair and hazel eyes while her mother completed it all with her shoulder length blonde hair always in a side parting and baby blue eyes.

All in all, her family was odd and slightly dysfunctional but Edelweiss wouldn't have it any other way.

The next day was her birthday.

July 5th.

Edel jumped out of bed with a grin and rushed to her full body mirror looking at herself.

She twirled and sighed amused.

Yep.

No change.

She rushed down the stairs in her PJs and into the kitchen to see her mom and stepdad already at the table, a pile of golden delicious looking pancakes sat on the table and Edel's stomach grumbled pitifully.

The sound made Tony look up from his paper and grin.

"Happy Birthday little red."

Laurel also looked up in surprise and beamed.

"Happy birthday sweetie. The big 11! How do you feel?"

She asked as she hugged Edel who immediately sat down and piled a delicious amount of pancakes with maple syrup.

"Thanks you two. And I honestly don't feel any different."

She pursed in thought as she was about to put a fork full of pancake in her mouth.

"Well except waking up super hungry."

With that she took a big bite and her mum shook her head at her.

"Aren't you always hungry?"

She shrugged.

"Hey where's Lou-lou?"

Tony snorted.

"You know how much he hates you calling him that, right?"

"Hey, it's my birthday. I get to do whatever I want."

"He went over to Mikey's this morning. Something about him getting some new game or whatever."

Her mum answered as she moved to the kitchen window, opening it widely and staring out into the sky, like she was expecting something.

It intrigued Edel. If only slightly.

"Isn't it a little early to be looking for stars, mother?"

She playfully teased and her mum forced a glare on her face, turning to her.

"Oh haha. Very funny sweetie. I'm just… checking for something."

Edel shrugged and went back to her plate, she was used to her mum acting weird.

It was after she finished eating and was washing her plate that the doorbell rang.

Laurel immediately sprang up from the dining chair and rushed towards the front door eagerness mixed with some panic and I turned to look at my step dad who also looked slightly wary as well though he shrugged at me.

The front door opened though I couldn't see who from where I was.

They were probably shorter than my mother since I couldn't even spot them.

And wasn't that bizarre??

Shorter than my 5'4 mother!

Maybe it was a kid her age then. Probably a friend from school or something?

"Oh! Hello, please yes I have been expecting you. Do come in."

My mum gestured, shifting just a bit and I felt my eyes widened as a very short and peculiar man walked in, a huge beam on his face, dressed in a miniature suit.

As mum closed the door and the visitor sat down on a sofa, mum turned to Tony and I and gestured us over.

Well… I was certainly already curious enough anyways so I wasn't going to turn down her nice offer. Even if I was still in my PJs.

"Ah! And you must be Miss Hawthorne! A pleasure to meet you young lady!"

He had a squeaky high toned voice that slightly startled Edel but she put on a smile and went over to shake his hand politely.

"Pleasure sir, but… who are you?"

"Edelweiss!"

Her mother chided her while Tony sighed where he was and a smile played on Edel's face.

The tiny man chuckled, waving her mother's concerns off.

"Not to worry, it's always refreshing to meet young and inquisitive minds! Why I teach quite a lot of them in school!"

Laurel nodded before gesturing for Edel to sit next to her and grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly yet comfortingly.

It made Edel look at her mom slightly concerned.

Even Tony had a slightly grim look on his face.

"Is… is there something going on?"

She finally asked hesitantly and her mom shook her head unconvincingly.

"Ah… no, not really. But I uh, I think it'd be better if it's all explained to you… by a far more reliable source."

She looked at the tiny man knowingly and his eyes twinkled slightly.

"Ah… I had wondered if you'd known…"

He spoke and Laurel nodded.

"Yes, I have indeed always known… and after… he, died… I passed on the secret to Tony. He's my husband."

She nodded towards Tony and greeted the tiny man and Edel's head was already spinning.

What was going on??

How did they seem to know each other??

"What's going on?"

Edel was not a rude kind of girl. She knew that, but she hated being left in the dark about something, no matter how little it was. Except she just wasn't interested in it, but this! She was very much interested!

The tiny man cleared his throat and spoke directly to her.

"Very well. Since your parents are in the know… this would make it very much easier to explain. My name is Professor Filius Flitwick and I teach at a very wonderful school. A school which I represent today so I can extend an invitation to you to come learn over there."

With that, he brought out a cream colored envelope that looked slightly old fashioned and held it out to Edel who immediately stood up and took it.

The address read—

Miss E. Hawthorne.3rd Bedroom on the right.8, Avondale Avenue, Staines-upon-Thames, Spelthorn District.Surrey.

How did they—never mind.

She quickly opened it and read the letter and as she reached the end, her mouth hung open, looking at the man incredulously before slowly turning to her parents.

"Is this… is this some kind of birthday joke?"

Her mom smiled and shook her head, patting the seat next to her which Edel moved to.

"I wasn't always sure how to tell you. I guess I just wanted to have you all to myself for a little while before your father's world won you over."

Edel's heartbeat quickened at the mention of her birth father.

"My father's… world? What's that? What do you mean?"

"What your mother is trying to break to you softly, is that your father comes from another world close to this one. Not necessarily separate from this one but more like… neighbors. You see young miss, magic exists, even more than the eye can see. You just have to know it's all around you, and within you, to be able to utilize it."

And with that, the professor brought out a long wooden stick that was well made and pointed it to the coffee table, saying something unintelligible to Edel and right before her eyes, the table turned into a monkey!

A living, breathing monkey!

A monkey chattered, bouncing around the room.

Laurel gasped slightly and she heard Tony take in air. It was after all his first time actually seeing magic. Real magic, that is.

As the monkey settled back where the table used to be, the professor raised the stick again and waved it and it went back to being a table.

He then looked up at Edel's widened eyes and smiled.

"You're a witch, my dear."

Hey guys!

So this is my Harry Potter fic.

I once posted the first chapter but then took it down to make some slight corrections to it.

Essentially this is canon with a mix that will digress a lot later on.

This story is Edel's, and not Harry Potter's.

And just like any other 1st year student, she won't have any run-in with the Golden Trio as I like to call them until later on, especially since they're a year older and don't even share any classes or activities together.

No bashing but when it comes to Ginny Weasley… well… I won't turn her into some sort of 'I hate everyone' or 'you're beneath me' or 'I want Harry for money' nonsense bashing... no. I just need a brat and with the whole Tom Riddle's diary scenario, she more or less fits the character I need, lol.

Ginny will start off as a little girl with temper, jealousy issues similar to her brother Ron but with the diary in hand, we get to see how it changes her occasionally from a roommate's point of view.

I'm a huge Ginny fan, especially when it comes to fanfiction and recreating her as not much was really known about the ginger haired girl from canon but it leaves you with wild imaginations to forge her how you want and I love to write and read awesome Ginny fics, I guess I just found myself fixated with a brattish Ginny Weasley for now so I hope you look forward to it.

I will also occasionally try to branch into some parts of magic and some explanations not given in canon, just in my own way.

Like other schools of magic, other magical countries, and even other subjects not focused on, cause in the book we learn a lot about DADA, Charms, Transfiguration and stuff but not much is known on say... Ancient runes.

Anyways, this is just my take on it and expanding more on how I see the world in this particular fic.

My OC starts off as a normal 11 year old muggle raised girl but starts to make her way in the wizarding world with her friends. Like I said above, I'll try to touch on other wizarding topics and ideas that weren't really touched in canon.

My OC will also not start off all powerful and all knowing like some OCs… Harry Potter is still the chosen one and the Golden Trio as we like to call them will STILL be three.

This is just another take from another eyes of someone who isn't always at death's door every end of term.

Hope you love it!

And check out Chapter 2! I posted both chapters so you all have an idea on what the story would be like!!
