"Dean...", someone is calling his name from afar.. "Dean!".. closer now
- Dean! Wake up!
Dean opens his eyes the moment he feels someone hit him at the foot.
- Dad?
- Falling asleep on the job, Dean? Seriously?!
- We're not having a job.. I was just waiting for you to come back from your friend Tim., he rubs his right eye while yawning.
- I told you to read the book Bobby gave us and keep notes! Anyway, we need to talk!
- What happened?, when his father wants to talk, usually it's not for something good.
- Tim is dead.
- What?! I thought he was lightly injured and just needed your help with stitches!
- Yeah.. well, the son of a bitch lied on the phone! When I got there, he was almost gone.
- Why he called you then and not some other hunter closer to where he was? He knew you wouldn't be there in time..
- He wanted help with something.. Actually he made me promise him that I'll take care of something.
- His car?
- You think he'd call me to go all this way there for a car?!
- I would for Baby!
- Dean, not all the.. you know what? Forget it!
- If not the car, then what?
- His son.
- His WHAT?!
- Son..
- He has a son?!
- Apparently he does. His name's Sam and he's 14.. just 4 years younger than you.
- Okay.. so.. we have to find his relatives now?
- Tim was a hunter, Dean. He has no relatives.
- Well, his wife has! What about his wife?
- Sam was resulted from a one night stand. One morning Tim found him waiting out of his motel door with a letter explaining how
the things had. Never found the woman and after a few years he had spent with the kid, he just stopped looking.
- So it's not sure that Sam's his son.
- He had a DNA test. He is his son.
- Okay.. so now what? Orphanage?
- No, Dean! His father was a hunter! You think monsters won't come after him?!
- Then what we do, dad?
- I told you.. Tim wanted me to take care of something.. meaning Sam.
- Yeah, I heard that but.. WAIT! By taking care you don't actually mean...
- I'm afraid that that's exactly what I mean..
- No!
- Dean, come on!
- We don't even know the kid, dad! Maybe they are shapeshifters and play with you all this time!
- I'm not stupid, son! I checked! They're 100% humans! And what other choice do I have?! Leave a 14 year old alone on the road with all these monsters out there?!
- Tim was hunting away from home all the time. I'm sure he can take care of himself.
- Dean, enough! We're keeping this kid! At least till he's 18 and can choose his own way! End of discussion!
- But...
- No! He is waiting in my car. Gonna tell him to come in and you are giving him your bed for tonight!
- We have a big couch over there!
- So you don't have a problem sleeping there for tonight, right?, and with that he's out of the door.
- Sam! I thought I told to wait at the car.., John finds him outside the door.
- I should probably leave you alone..
- What? No! Come on! Don't listen what Dean says! He just has to accept how the things gonna be from now on.
- John, he won't! Thanks for what you're willing to do for me but you don't have to and I don't want it!
- Listen, Sam! I promised something to your father. And neither Dean nor you will make me break my promise! You're staying!
- I don't want to stay!
- Too bad but it's happening. Now come in!
- No!
- Sam! I'm one of the very little people out there who are trying to protect you now that your dad is gone! So come in and don't even think to try to escape!
- I wasn't gonna try to escape..
- I have a son into there 4 years older than you. I know how, you boys, think as teens. So whatever you're gonna do, think it twice!
- Fine!
- Fine! Come in!
- So.. Sam, right?
- Yeah..
- I'm Dean..
- I know..
- Oookay..
- Dean, Sam, I'm going to grab some food. Salt the door when I leave and get to know each other for as long as I'm gone.
- Yes, sir.., both boys answer quietly.
- Good. Don't get into any fight please., and with that John walks out of the room.
- You can have my bed for tonight., Dean takes one of the pillows and moves to the couch.
- You don't have to do that. I can take the couch..
- Well, my dad thinks that I have to, so just take the bed.
- Okay.. thanks..
- Yeah.. I hope you don't snore., Dean snorts and opens the TV.
- I don't.., Sam whispers bringing his bag on the bed and starts unpacking.
After a while Dean can't find nothing good on TV so he decides to break the ice a little. He moves from the couch where Sam is unpacking his things. Well, not actually unpacking.. just searching for a new t-shirt and jeans to wear.
- What's that?, Dean's eye catches a big book on the bed.
- People usually call it book.
- I see that, smartass! I mean what kind? Does it have spells in?, Dean opens it.
- Actually it has. If you choose the right one, you can have a better future!, Sam moves to put something in the bathroom and then comes back again.
- Stop playing with me! It's a book about universities, Sam! I can read!
- And how exactly a university doesn't make your future better?, Sam starts to put things into his bag again.
- You're a hunter. That's your job. And there is no college out there teaching you how to hunt.., Dean is trying to understand.
- I'm not a hunter, Dean. I was born into this life but it's my choice if I'll continue doing it or not.
- You know what's out there and you help people! How can you want to walk out of this?
- There are other hunters who will continue to save the world. I just wanna have a normal life! I didn't have a family because of this job! I didn't have a childhood, I didn't have innocense and I haven't exactly save a lot people since my dad thought it would be best to keep me out of the hunts to protect me! So yeah.. I don't think that this life has to offer me something else other than pain and fear!
- You had a family.. Your dad...
- My dad was never home! I took care of my self alone! I made me dinner, I put myself to sleep and I was trying to calm me down when everything was going to hell! So no! My dad tried to protect me and didn't throw me away when he found me outside his motel
door and I thank him for that, but he wasn't there! No one was there!
- He was doing his best!
- Yeah okay. But that's not the life I want for my children! And yes, I wanna have kids! With a wife! And a home! Not BY MISTAKE with a woman who I'll leave the next morning. Not with a woman who I don't know, and who never wanted a kid but couldn't have an abortion cause she found out too late that she was pregnant, and used to blame me for everything bad in her life even if had happenned way before I was born! And just to know, I remember the day she left me at that door. Or should I say night? I was waiting all night out there at the cold with a letter and a backpack crying. Till Tim found me at the morning when he decided to come back from the bar he was all night drinking beers with his buddies. I was just 5, Dean! 5 freaking years old! So screw the job and screw the monsters! I have no one left any way, so why should I care?!, Sam looks him misty-eyed.
- No.. you're right.. you're right., Dean answers soflty putting slowly the book on the bed. A fourteen year old shouldn't have suffered so much pain. No fourteen year old deserved that. Dean's parents were happily married and loved each other and wanted a family before everything happened. His father may be tough and overprotective sometimes but he always knows that he wanted him and that he loves him. Sam spent 5 years of his life with a mother who blamed him for everything, then 9 years with an absent father, and now this.
- I'm sorry., Dean decides to speak.
- For what?, Sam is looking at him couriusly.
- For your dad. And for everything basically.
- Yeah.. Don't be. Don't wanna people feel sorry about me.. and that's why I don't wanna John keep me here with you two. He's not a relative of mine. He doesn't even know me. For him I'm just a helpless kid that he found on his way and can't leave alone. God, why am I even saying you the story of my life?! I don't even know you!
- You feel comfortable around me maybe?
- Doesn't matter. I won't be here for long anyway..
- If you try to escape, you know that my dad will find you, right?
- I'll not leave, Dean. John will get tired of me.
- That's not gonna happen. When dad promises something, he keeps his promise till the end.
- I'm angry, Dean. I'm getting angry over everything! Even my own father gave up sometimes. John won't put up with this attitude.
- Ha.. you don't know me then. If dad dealed with me, then he sure can deal with you too.
- You're his son.
- That's how he sees you from now on.
- That's crazy! The guy just met me.
- He agreed to take care of you for 4 years at least. Basically he adopted you! Welcome to the family, brother!
- Shut up!
- I think I'll be an awesome big brother!, Dean laughs.
- That's not funny! I don't need a father, neither a brother! I can take care of myself!
- No one said you can't.. but you don't have to anymore. Dad is gone a lot out there hunting? Yeah, sure! But at least now you have me here, you're not alone. That's not so bad, right?
- Well, I don't know yet if I like you or if you're a dick, so I'd prefer to be alone!
- Oh, little Sammy.. we have 4 whole years to find out!, Dean is laughing again.
- Stop laughing! And don't call me Sammy!
- Yeah, okay, Sammy! Sooo, what's your favourite lesson at school?, Dean sits back at the couch.
- You know what? You're a dick!, Sam takes his clothes and closes loudly the bathroom's door. Dean smiles. At least the kid is not at the edge of crying anymore. Mission accomplished! Before his mother's death, his parents had told him that he was going to become a big brother. He was so happy! And then everything went to hell! He never became one and he always had a soft spot for younger children. Always trying to protect them and make them feel safe. Often he was thinking that he'd be a good brother. And he's not gonna lose that chance with Sam. He has 4 years to be the big brother he always wanted to be. He has 4 years to prove Sam that his life won't be as it used to be. That he's not alone anymore and that he can trust him. And the fact that he liked the kid from the moment he saw it, made this much more easier. Maybe it's the fact that he's a boy and 4 years younger. Exactly like the brother he was supposed to have. 4 years younger. And maybe the fact that he has his mother's colour eyes. Exactly as he remember them and often sees them at photos. It's like
Sam is the brother he almost had.
- Dean!, someone shakes his shoulder.
- What?.., Dean comes out of his daydreaming.
- Your phone is ringing, man! I think it's your dad.
- What?, now he listens his phone ringing and yes, it's dad.
- Would you pick it up?
- Dad?
- Dean, take Sam and leave from that room! Meet me at Bobby's!
- What?! Why? What happened?!
- Just go! I'll explain later! Don't trust anyone till you get there!, and like that he hangs up.
- Umm.. Dean, you're alright? You look.. pale?
- We have to go!
- Umm.. where?
- At a friend! Take your bag! We're leaving!
- What happened?!
- Take your bag, Sam!, Dean grabs his duffel and his knife under the pillow and runs for the door.
- What about John?, Sam followes him.
- Get in the car!, Dean sits behind the wheel and when Sam comes in the passenger's seat, he immediately drives away.
- Dean..
- Just give me a minute please!, Dean is trying to think what can possibly go wrong at a walk to the nearest fast-food store. Maybe it's the thing he and his dad were hunting when they came at this little town? But he's so sure that they killed it! Maybe it's something from the past? Maybe it's the thing that killed his mother?! At that thought Dean freezes. Can it be? Why here and why now?!
- All of these it's my fault., Sam whispers but loud enough to catch Dean's attention.
- What did you say?, Dean sounds angry but he really isn't. Just shocked about what happened.
- I'm sorry., Sam looks straight the road misty-eyed again.
- Sorry about what, Sam?!
- Don't be angry please..
- I'm not angry. I'm just trying to understand. Why do you think that this is your fault?, Dean tries to calm his voice.
- Because he always comes and destroys anything good., Sam whispers again.
- Who?
Sam doesn't answer. Just closes his eyes and inhales deeply.
- Who, Sam?!, Dean takes a look at Sam and asks again.
- The demon.., he whispers.
- The demon?
- Yeah..
- What demon? Why a demon wants you?!
- He doesn't want me.
- Then what?
- A book.
- A book?
- Yes..
- What book?
- One my dad had. But I don't know where it is. He hide it very well. I wanted to just give it to him but dad said that if the demon gets the book, he can destroy the world with that! So I had to keep saying no and he keeps coming. I'm afraid that even if I find it and give it to him now, he'll be so angry for making him wait so long that he'll kill me.., Sam is sobbing.
- Hey, no, Sammy. He won't.
- He will!, Sam's crying more.
- What kind of a father does that to his kid?! He was supposed to find a way to release you from this thing! Not make you suffer!, Dean hits the steering wheel.
- I'm sorry, Dean..
- Don't! Please don't! We'll find a way! We will!
- You can leave him right here if you want., and Sam moves to open the door.
- Don't be stupid! What the fuck are you doing?!, Dean pushes him back at the seat.
- I can't sit around seeing innocent people getting hurt beacuse of me and my father!, he moves again and Dean pushes him again back.
- Sam, if you move one more time, I'll punch you and I will not be sorry!
- You don't understand!
- I do understand! Now sit back and tell me what else you know about this thing!
- Why do you care?, Sam asks instead with tears still on his eyes.
- Cause we're practically family from now on, kid..
- Dean, come on! You know me for what.. an hour? And suddenly we're brothers? That's crazy.
- I almost had a brother.., is Dean who whispers this time.
- What?
- When my mum died, I was four. And she was pregnant. At a boy. I would have a brother four years younger..
- So.. I'm something like a substitute for the brother you didn't have?
- What? No!
- That's exactly why I don't want anyones help!
- I never meant it that way!, Dean shouts.
- Well, I don't care cause that's how it sounds and that's how it is!
- It isn't!
- It is!
- I and only I know how it is and when I say it isn't, IT ISN'T! How else can I see you when my father comes and tells me 'Hey, Dean, I found a kid and we'll take care of him till his adulthood at least' ?!. The way we live doesn't give us the time we would prefer to have in order to get to know each other better! So either I am cautious around you and risk my ass at the hunt this way, or I accept you as family and we move on like that! Also, dad would never bring you here, if he knew you're bad.
- I am bad.
- Come on, you're not!
- John doesn't know about the demon.
- Okay. We'll tell him and we'll find a way to help you.
- No!
- Sam..
- DON'T! Dean, please! I'll leave! Just don't...
- Do you hear me when I'm talking, Sam?! You're not going anywhere!
- Then don't...
- Why?
- I don't trust him, okay?!
For a while no one is speaking.
- Understandable., Dean speaks finally.
- You' re not mad?
- Why?
- He's your father I'm talking about.
- You're 14, alone and scared. It's pretty normal to not trust anyone at this point. That's why I'm trying to prove you that we're the good guys here. My father isn't around a lot and that doesn't make it easy. But I'm here. And I'll be here. Because believe me, when dad said that we will take care of you, that means mainly me. Like I took care of myself, I'm gonna take care of you too. And if you trust me, then maybe it's easier for you to trust John and see that not everyone are bad to you. Nice people exist too.
- I never had a brother.
- There is a first time for everything, right?
- Yeah.. I guess., Sam smiles. Dean smiles back and they continue their drive towards Bobby and John.
~The end~
