Jake was fixing on the bikes while he was talking to me about his life at school and his two friends with the strangest names, Embry and Quil.
I didn't know why the name Quil brought a certain memory to me, but I couldn't see it quite clearly.
Why did that name sound so familiar?
"Jacob?" The shout broke me out of my reverie.
"Is that Billy?" I asked.
"No." Jacob ducked his head, and it looked like he was blushing under his brown skin. "Speak of the devil," He mumbled, "And the devil shall appear."
"Jake? Are you out there?" The shouting voice was getting closer now.
"Yeah!" Jacob shouted back, and sighed.
We waited until two tall dark-skinned boys strolled around the corner to the shed.
One was slender, and almost as tall as Jacob. His black hair was chin length and parted down the middle, one side tucked behind his left ear while the right side swung free. The shorter boy was more burley-
That's when the memories flooded back to me once I saw his face. I remember the one that was Quil. The brawny boy's eyes were on me, a slow smile spreading across his face.
This was the friend of Jacob's that he's been talking about. I had no idea he was friends with Jake until now.
Could Quil remember what we did on that night together? That we were at a party, got drunk, and then I woke up naked in his bed knowing what we've done couldn't be corrigible. It was just one night to forget about my ex-vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen. I just could not forget what transpired between Quil and I.
"I'm Quil Ateara," His voice snapped me out of my memories once again as he was waiting for me to shake his hand. My hand clasped onto his larger and familiar hand.
The hand that did the most magnificent things to my body...
At least I knew his last name now.
"Nice to meet you, Quil." I said acting as if this truly was the first time I met him.
"Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" He wondered. Maybe he did have a faint recognition of me, but I didn't want to talk about it in front of Jake.
"I don't think so," I said as I let go of his hand. "You must've mistaken me for someone else."
"Yeah, Quil, how can you know her?" Jake asked as if that was a ridiculous notion.
Quil's brown eyes looked at me as if trying to gain a missing memory. He snapped out of it then.
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Quil said as an after thought, but didn't sound entirely convincing. "We wouldn't know each other, would we?"
"No." I replied immediately.
So, it looked like Quil didn't remember at all. I was the one to live with the guilt that I discovered I slept with Jake's best friend. Maybe it was better to have the burden on me then on someone else. Quil wouldn't be the one to suffer from it.
"Hey, Bella," Jake's other friend who must be Embry either said my name in greeting or to get my attention, I couldn't tell. My head turned to him. "I'm Embry, Embry Call...you probably already figured that out, though," Embry smiled shyly and waved with one hand, which he then shoved in the pocket of his jeans.
I nodded. "Nice to meet you, too."
"So, what are you guys doing?" Quil asked, still looking at me and I wished he wouldn't. His stare made me uncomfortable.
"Bella and I are going to fix up these bikes." Jacob explained inaccurately.
That seemed to get the two boys' attention and the three of them were talking about very mechanical stuff that I wouldn't understand if I tried.
It got Quil distracted enough to not be focused on me. I still couldn't believe he didn't remember, but it was understandable why he didn't. The two of us were very drunk, and back then, we didn't know each other. We only knew our first names, that's it.
But why did I want Quil to remember who I was? I was just another girl he had slept with. We were both successful as to what we wanted in the end.
I'm surprised I still have flashbacks of our one night of intoxicated passion.
They were still immersed in talk of parts and pieces when I decided that I needed to head back home before Charlie showed up here. With a sigh, I slid out of the Rabbit.
Jacob looked up, apologetic. "We're boring you, aren't we?"
"Naw," And it wasn't a lie. I was enjoying myself...how strange. "I just have to go cook dinner for Charlie."
"Oh...well, I'll finish taking these apart tonight and figure out what more we'll need to get started rebuilding them. When do you want to work on them again?"
"Could I come back tomorrow?"
Quil nudged Embry's arm and they exchanged grins.
Jacob smiles in delight. "That would be great!"
We talked about shopping for parts and I refused to let him pay for them since he was the handyman for this project and I managed to convince him I should pay. I also told Jake that he'll be giving me riding lessons.
Quil grinned widely at Embry and whispered something I didn't catch. Jacob's hand flashed out to snatch the back of Quil's head. "That's it, get out," he muttered.
"No, really, I have to go," I protested, heading for the door. "I'll see you tomorrow, Jacob."
As soon as I was out of sight, I heard Quil and Embry chorus, "Wooooo!"
The sound of a brief scuffle followed, interspersed with an "ouch" and a "hey!"
"If either of you set so much as one toe on my land tomorrow..." I heard Jacob threaten. His voice was lost as I walked through the trees.
I giggled quietly. The sound made my eyes widen in wonder. I was laughing, actually laughing, and there wasn't even anyone watching. I felt so weightless that I laughed again, just make the feeling last longer.
Despite the awkward interaction with Quil, I thought that went a lot better than I thought it would. We both handled ourselves well. Now if only I could just completely forget that one scandalous night, I won't be so freaked out around Quil.
I should make a permanent mental note to never go to a party with Jessica and Lauren ever again.
