Alright readers, here is the 43rd chapter of this story!
Now, I don't have much to say for this chapter. For this chapter, the M*A*S*H 4077 is forced to bug out of the area due to a report from HQ about Chinese Communists invading the perimeter where the compound is located.
With that, they evacuate to a new location that is not caught in the perimeter, the people stationed there take their belongings with them; personal and mandatory, each of the main characters (including Andrew) have their reaction towards needing to bug out of the area, and some other stuff will happen too. How will this go for all of them? Find out right now!
AT THE M*A*S*H 4077 - 9:48
It was a wonderful morning at the 4077th. No casualties were hitting the compound, and because of that, everyone was just taking it easy. At least those who don't feel obligated to do some work around the compound at this time of day.
In particular, outside the Swamp, we see both Hawkeye and Trapper sitting in the chairs placed outside, as they were relaxing and enjoying the morning air, or what was of it since they were in Korea.
Both of them were in their trademark Hawaiian button-up t-shirts, and they were also wearing their respective hats too. In addition to that, Trapper was also wearing his sunglasses. It seemed like today was going to be a decent day for everyone stationed at the 4077th.
"Ah. It's such a swell day outside today in Korea, isn't it Trapper?" Hawkeye commented towards his partner.
"Yeah. You don't get nice days in a hell hole like this," Trapper answered dully. "For all we know, Mother Nature might as well be playing a cruel trick on us, to the point where we'll get casualties at any minute."
"Ah come on Trap! Let's face it," Hawkeye tried to counter. "We haven't had a single casualty in weeks. Radar had told us that there was no action taking place at the front, so there shouldn't be any incoming wounded. It has been a relaxing period for the M*A*S*H 4077!"
"That's what I'm afraid of Hawk," Trapper retorted. "There's an old saying that goes 'calm before the storm'. Meaning all this relaxation we've been doin' for a couple of weeks might come to an end when that first chopper is heard flying into the compound with our first wounded patient in weeks."
"Don't be ridiculous Trapper," Hawkeye huffed. "There's no reason for any of us to be paranoid. Especially since we have Frank to do that for us."
"Frank's only paranoid because everyone is against him, or so he says," Trapper deadpanned.
"That's a likely reason," Hawkeye rolled his eyes. "Look, let's not be as paranoid as Frank and enjoy this fresh air."
"If you say so Hawkeye," Trapper sighed, seeing that he won't be able to convince him. "Just don't say I didn't warn ya when we get struck by our first shrapnel in weeks."
"Right," Hawkeye moaned as he went back to relaxing, with Trapper reluctantly following his lead, and trying to put a lid on the paranoia.
Speaking of paranoia, just a few minutes later, Trapper found himself being pelted in the head by something. No, it wasn't any shrapnel, thank goodness. It was dirt. In which Trapper felt it hit his face and he ran his hand across it.
"Hey Hawk," Trapper started to ask stalely upon looking at his hand covered in dirt. "Did they say that it was going to be raining dirt at the 4077?"
"Huh? Dirt?" Hawkeye sat up and gave Trapper a confused looked. "Trap, what on Earth are you talking about?"
"Quit playin' around with me Hawkeye. You know damn well what I'm talkin' about," Trapper retorted. "I'm getting pelted in the face by dirt, and gravel."
"Uh, Trapper there's not a single rain cloud in the sky," Hawkeye motioned to the clear blue sky with a couple of white clouds. "Besides, even if there were, I highly doubt that there'd be any dirt clouds in the sky that rain dirt on everyone."
"Okay. I must be losing my mind Hawkeye," Trapper sat up, took off his sunglasses, and gave Hawkeye an annoyed look. "I must be getting all paranoid, aren't I?"
"Trap, take it easy," Hawkeye informed him. "You aren't getting paranoid, and it's not raining dirt."
"Well, then how do you explain the dirt that's hitting me in the face?!" Trapper queried in irritation.
It was right after he asked that Trapper got hit by more dirt. But rather than having come from the sky, it was coming from behind him.
"I think that there is the answer to your question Trapper," Hawkeye pointed. "It's coming from behind you."
"You don't say," Trapper snorted before turning around to see the source of the dirt that was hitting him.
As soon as he saw the culprit responsible, Trapper had to let out a dry chuckle. "Oh wow."
"What?" Hawkeye was curious by this.
"Speaking of someone who's paranoid, guess who's digging a fox hole on the right side of the Swamp," Trapper pointed out. "And has also surrounded it with some sandbags for protection."
"Hmm?" Hawkeye got up from his chair and walked over to where Trapper was pointing and saw it for himself.
It was none other than Frank Burns. And by the looks of it, he was digging a foxhole and had sandbags surrounding all sides of the foxhole for protection against who-knows-what.
Hawkeye had this amused smirk on his face as he heard Frank grunting every time he shoveled out more dirt from the hole. Wanting to get a kick out of this, Hawkeye decided to get his attention.
"Hey Frank," he hollered as Trapper stood up and walked over next to Hawkeye. "Practicing to dig a fox hole to fall into again?"
That question got Frank to stop and cringed as he heard chuckles coming from the captains. Turning around to face them, Frank gave them that annoyed scowl.
"Oh haha, Pierce. Until you bozos, I don't waste time lounging around when something could happen," Frank snorted. "It just so happens that I'm digging a foxhole as protection against any incoming air raids that could hit us at any second."
"Frank, the sky is clear and the sun is shining," Hawkeye huffed. "How could an air raid strike us when there's nothing in the sky?"
"Oh don't be so smug," Frank yelled. "With the type of conditions we've been getting, I have to always be ready for the least expected! Don't you two get it!? These conditions could make us vulnerable for the Chinese to launch a surprise attack on us, especially an air raid! So I'm making the most of my time by preparing a good source of protection!"
"I bet," Trapper snorted. "Keep digging like that and your liable to be 10 feet under."
"Or worse, you might strike gold," Hawkeye added.
"Haha. Nice try you two lugs," Frank gloated. "That's not going to get to me this time. I know better than to fall for your tricks."
"Especially since we can be notoriously tricky around these parts," Hawkeye said. "In any case Frank, you're wasting your time with that. So cut it out."
"You can't tell me what to do Pierce. I outrank you," Frank said mockingly. "After weeks of not getting casualties, you'd think that the enemy could launch an air raid on us! Which could result in us getting wounded! So that's why I'm doing what I'm doing!"
"He's right you know," Trapper admitted reluctantly and dryly.
"Oh come on Trap," Hawkeye moaned. "Frank is just being the paranoid dolt that he's always been. I say he should stop wasting his time with that damn foxhole."
"Look Hawk, if Frank wants to dig away a pointless foxhole, let him waste his time and dig to prepare for an air raid," Trapper told him casually.
"Well, that is something I wasn't expecting," Frank admitted in shock before saying. "Anyway, thanks, McIntyre. Glad that you could see it my way."
"No problem Frank," Trapper told him sardonically. "Just be sure not to dig too deep that you can't find your way back up."
"I'm digging just fine McIntyre," Frank retorted in annoyance. "Now leave me to my work."
"Whatever you say, Mr. MacArthur," Trapper rolled his eyes before grabbing Hawkeye by the arm. "Come on Hawkeye. Let's leave Frank to dull away with his foxhole."
"Wait, Trapper. Trap," Hawkeye felt himself being pulled away as Trapper dragged him to the left side of the Swamp where Frank couldn't see them. "Alright Trap. Now I know you have something planned if your willing to agree with Frank like that."
"Now look Hawk, you heard what he said, anything could happen," Trapper remarked. "As I had just said, what we've been experiencing these past couple of weeks is calm before the storm."
"Oh Trapper, don't go talking about that again," Hawkeye groaned in annoyance.
"I'm serious Hawkeye. Anything could happen to us. And besides," it was then Trapper decided to reveal to his friend this idea he came up with. "I just came up with this practical joke that we can pull on Frank."
"Oooh Trap you son of a gun you," Hawkeye started to smirk. "What do you have planned for ol' Needle Nose this time?"
"Since Frank has 'air raid' on his mind, I say we trick him into thinking that there is an air raid," Trapper muttered to him.
"Ah Trapper, you haven't lost your touch," Hawkeye was amused by this. "How are we going to prank him with a fake air raid?"
"I'm glad you asked me that Hawkeye my faithful companion," Trapper smirked. "Once Frank is done digging that foxhole and heads back into the Swamp, we fill the foxhole up with water."
"By using the hose right?" Hawkeye took a guess.
"Your catching on fast, pal," Trapper leaned over to Hawkeye's ear. "Once we filled up the hole, then we..."
He then started whispering something indistinguishable into Hawkeye's ear, with that grin on his face. Just hearing what Trapper told him got Hawkeye to smirk devilishly at the practical joke that they were going to pull on Frank. Needless to say, he was impressed.
"Trapper, we've pulled many practical jokes on Frank before," Hawkeye remarked. "But this one will 'really' top them all."
"You 'really' think so," Trapper said dully. "I could have sworn that it just came to me from the back of my head."
"It probably did," Hawkeye shrugged. "But for now, let's wait until Frank is done to get this practical joke into practice Trap."
"Your words speak louder than mine Hawk," Trapper retorted. "But we'll wait for him to finish anyway."
Neither of them said another word as they waited for Frank to finish digging that foxhole so they could start the practical joke that Trapper came up with. They just had to be patient with the Major.
It took quite a bit of time, but eventually, Frank was finished with the foxhole as he climbed out of it with the shovel in his right hand, and he wiped the sweat that was on his forehead with his left arm.
Seeing how he was completely dirty from all that digging, Frank felt that now was the best time to head to the shower tent to wash up. With that, Frank put the shovel to the side, took out some fresh clothes from his laundry pile after taking off his dirty uniform, put on his bathrobe, and made his way to the shower tent.
Hawkeye and Trapper saw him head to the shower tent, but they decided to wait a little longer. They had to make sure that Frank wouldn't suspect a thing, especially long after he has gotten out of the shower. They had to remind themselves that patience is a virtue. So they stay hidden for a little more time.
After a good 20 minutes, Frank walked out of the shower tent, looking clean as he had intended. With his bathrobe on, he decided to get back to the Swamp to change into his fresh clean uniform, before deciding to unwind in the Swamp for a little bit.
The moment Frank entered the Swamp and closed the door, Trapper poked his head out from the corner, with Hawkeye doing the same thing afterwards.
"Looks like it's clear," Trapper whispered. "Let's move."
Not saying a word, Hawkeye obliged as they both walked while crouching down to avoid being seen by Frank as they headed to the spot that the foxhole was located. They saw that the hole was deep enough to support a pool of water. This was just what they were hoping for.
"Bingo. The hole is perfect for filling it up with water," Hawkeye commented.
"Alright," Trapper muttered. "Now we're gonna need the hose, turn it on, and face the nozzle into the hole so it can be flooded with water."
"We should probably get the hose, right?" Hawkeye questioned.
"That's probably the best way for us to get this hole full of water," Trapper retorted dryly, giving him a look. "Anyway, let's get that hose."
"Right," Hawkeye muttered in agreement.
With that, the two of them went to get the hose so the foxhole could be filled up to the surface with water. They were already looking forward to pulling this one off on Frank. That was a given...
OUTSIDE OF THE SWAMP - 10:26
After some more time went by, it was shown that Hawkeye was pointing the nozzle of the hose into the hole, where water was coming out of it while Trapper watched the hold get filled up with water. At that moment, it was shown that the hole was just about filled up as they planned.
"Alright Hawk, that just about does it," Trapper informed him. "The foxhole is all filled up."
"Great Trap. Now turn off the water hose," Hawkeye issued.
"Gotcha," Trapper did just that as he went over and turned off the water hose.
This resulted in the hose stopping spraying water out of the nozzle, a sign that it was no longer running. Seeing that it stopped, Hawkeye put down the water hose and walked over towards the foxhole, which was now filled up with water.
"Ain't she a beaut or what?" Trapper smirked confidently at how Hawkeye was looking into the hole while crossing his arms.
"I gotta hand it to you," Hawkeye admitted. "You turned this foxhole into a waterhole."
"Sure looks that way, doesn't it Hawk?" Trapper queried.
"It certainly does Trap," Hawkeye smirked. "Now that we got that out of the way, what should we do now with Frank and his air-raid paranoia?"
"It's simple," Trapper explained. "You knock on the door, yell 'air raid' a couple of times, he screams and comes out of the Swamp. Next thing we'll know, he'll head to this spot expecting a foxhole, when all he can find is a water hole."
"That's brilliant Trapper," Hawkeye complimented. "It's rudimentary if I must say so."
"Elementary Hawkeye, my dear boy," Trapper told him playfully. "Alright. Now go knock on the door, and yell 'air raid', and then let Frank's paranoia do the rest."
"Alright. I can hardly wait to see this for myself," Hawkeye then walked over to the door, to knock on it several times.
Then just as Trapper planned it, Hawkeye knocked on the door intending to get Frank on alert. It was then Hawkeye started shouting.
"Air raid!" Hawkeye yelled, getting Frank to sit up from his cot. "Air raid! Air raid!"
"AIR RAID!?" Frank started squealing like a girl as he stormed out of his cot and ran out the door. He began hollering loud enough so everyone could hear him; complete with Hawkeye and Trapper smirking at the display before them.
"AIR RAAAAIDDD! AIR RAAAAIDDDD!" Frank bellowed with both hands on both sides of his mouth so his voice could sound louder than it usually was. "AIR RAID! AIR RAID! AIR RAAAAIDDD!"
In a fit of delirium, Frank turned around and raced for the foxhole that he dug up just for the occasion. He tripped over one of the sandbags and fell into the hole, expecting to land on top of a dirt ground underneath.
Unfortunately, it wasn't even close to that since he splashed right into the water and got wet entirely. Meanwhile, Hawkeye and Trapper saw the whole thing as they started chuckling, which then turned into straight-up laughing at what Frank got himself into.
As they were having their cackling fit, Frank got his head back up to the surface as he gasped. He spent the next moment catching his breath before he saw the two captains laughing like crazy. As soon as he got a hold of himself, Frank furrowed his eyebrows and got their attention.
"Pierce and McIntyre!" Frank got them to stop laughing and look at him. "How dare you two laugh when there's an air raid about to hit us!?"
"Oh, gee. We must be a little late," Trapper said sarcastically. "I guess you didn't get the memo, Frank."
"What memo," Frank asked frantically. "What are you talking about?"
"There is no air raid Frank," Hawkeye laughed. "We made it up!"
"What!? Why?!" Frank was shocked by that and demanded an answer.
"To take advantage of your paranoid state Frank," Trapper laughed. "So we pulled this practical joke on you to pass the time!"
As the two captains cackled, Frank was not impressed by that, as he growled in their direction before scowling at them.
"You guys...You two are a bunch of degenerates," he barked. "That's what you are! You have no ounce of decency or respect for those who are aware of what could come our way!"
"Sure we are, Frank," Hawkeye said sarcastically. "Sure we are."
Frank looked about ready to tell them off again. But before he could, they saw Andrew exiting his tent, having heard some screaming as he decided to find out some answers.
"Alright," Andrew stormed over to them. "What's going on? What's with all the screaming?"
"Oh Andrew, you just missed it," Hawkeye giggled. "We managed to get Frank soaked out of his mind."
"What's that suppose to mean," Andrew gave him an annoyed look.
"It means that Frank fell into a foxhole," Trapper pointed out with a snort. "Only it's not a foxhole anymore. It's a water hole now since we filled it with water."
"You could say that Frank had a splash with that one," Hawkeye added.
"Right," Andrew pinched the bridge of his nose. "But what does that have to do with the screaming I just heard?"
"Well Andrew, we tricked Frank into thinking that an air raid was about to hit us," Hawkeye explained. "And so the weasel screamed at the top of his lungs 'air raid' multiple times. He was panicking so much you could go on a picnic while watching that."
"You what?" Andrew did not want to believe what he just heard.
"Frank was acting so paranoid about an air raid possibly hittin' us when there ain't a single cloud in the sky," Trapper elaborated. "So we pulled this practical joke on him to take advantage of his paranoia. In a manner that it would pay off in."
"And it was worth seeing that Ferret Face panic with his life when he thought an air raid was about to strike the compound." Hawkeye finished as he started laughing with Trapper again.
"So you thought tricking someone into thinking we're in danger was funny?" Andrew deadpanned, giving them a stoic glare at what was just told.
"Relax Andrew," Hawkeye had his hands up. "It was just a harmless joke."
"Harmless? Is that what you call it; harmless?" Andrew sneered with a bitter tone. "Do you have any idea how serious it could have been had there been a real air raid striking the 4077? We don't have a bunker to hide in, so we'd have to find some other means of getting to safety. I thought that the outcome from the whole 'we don't need guns' incident taught you two a lesson on what should be taken seriously. But I can see now that I was wrong about that."
"Come on Andrew," Trapper tried to get Andrew to relax. "There was nothing to it. There was no air raid, and that's the fun in it."
"But suppose an air raid 'really' did happen? Then what?" Andrew was getting very cross with his accusations as he glared at them. "Would you two decide to make a joke out of it, and possibly get a good chunk of us killed in the process? Is that what you two trouble-makers would do?"
"Okay, Andrew! We get the point," Hawkeye yelled. "Maybe we went too far with this practical joke."
"Maybe!? How about 'you did' go too far with this!? This is something that should be taken seriously. So don't ever joke about something like this again. Is that clear?" Andrew warned them.
"Whatever you say, Andrew," Hawkeye sounded unenthusiastic with his tone.
"Roger Andrew," Trapper was just as bored with how he spoke.
"Good," Andrew sighed. "Now I'm gonna have to help Frank out of that hole, and he'll have to get himself dried up."
With that, Andrew went over and grabbed Frank's arm and pulled the Major out of the water hole. What was surprising was that Frank didn't snap at Andrew to leave him alone when he did it. He stayed silent, allowing Andrew to do his job as Frank got out of the water hole, and stood on the ground, his clothes dripping water onto the ground.
"Alright. Now you need to get dried up and get into dry clothes," Andrew informed him. "Do you think you can handle that on your own?"
"Yes, Major. I should be able to," Frank panted. "Just as long as those two stay away from me."
"Alright. If you say so," Andrew shrugged as he watched Frank storm off to get himself dried up. "Now, if you two will excuse me, I'm gonna go back to reading 1984 before I was interrupted by the screaming. I'll see myself out."
Giving them one last angry look, Andrew then stormed back into his tent and shut the door behind him. Once he was in his tent, Hawkeye and Trapper decided to comment about what had just happened.
"Boy, you think you know a guy who is all relaxed and laid-back," Trapper moaned. "And yet he was able to reprimand us for our practical joke."
"Tell me about it," Hawkeye agreed. "Does he think that we'd joke about something like that?"
"Possibly. I mean we have made practical jokes about it before," Trapper shrugged. "Still, I have to wonder if there won't be an air raid, but something else. Something worse than this."
"Worse than this? Is that what I heard?" Hawkeye queried. "What could be worse than an air raid?"
"Perhaps the sudden need to bug out of this hell hole and relocate to somewhere far worse than this," Trapper said.
"Trapper? There is no chance of us having to bug out of this area," Hawkeye gave him an assuring comment. "We'll be staying right here, where we've always been stationed since we were drafted to this infested cesspool."
"Stranger things have happened around these parts, Hawkeye," Trapper informed him. "We'll just have to wait and see if anything does happen."
"Alright, but you're wasting your time with that," Hawkeye said. "Now, what do you say we help ourselves to something to drink? Fresh from the still?"
"I'm all for that," Trapper stated. "All this talk about an air raid that isn't happening has left me thirsty for alcohol anyway. Let's do it."
"Great. After you Trap." Hawkeye held the door open for him.
"The pleasure was all mine, Hawk," Trapper entered the Swamp with Hawkeye following right behind him, as the two Captains decided to help themselves to some gin straight from the gin.
What they didn't know was that something is going to happen to the M*A*S*H 4077. And it would happen when they'd least expect it...
IN RADAR'S OFFICE - 13:34
Several hours have passed since then, as people were still doing their usual activities. Radar, in particular, was in his office, sorting through some of the files in the filing cabinet as an attempt to keep himself busy. The lack of casualties showing up at the 4077th meant that he had to do other things to occupy his time.
Radar spent the next few minutes looking through one of the cabinet drawers when suddenly, the phone rang. Wondering who that could be, Radar dropped the file he was holding, rushed to the phone, and picked up the speaker before he talked into it.
"Hello? 4077th M*A*S*H. Corporal O'Reilly speaking. Who's this?" Radar spoke into the phone, getting an answer back from the other line. "Huh? Sparky? Sparky is that you? It is? Oh, hey Sparky! Glad to hear you again!"
As soon as he said that, Sparky said some stuff to Radar, which got the company clerk interested and satisfied by what he was being told.
"Oh well, that's great Sparky! Listen, how've you been? Anything new from HQ?" Radar asked him when he got an answer from the other line. "Really? You have? USO show huh? Bob Hope and broads? Yeah? Great to hear Sparky! Glad you're keeping busy. Anything else you have? Sparky?"
Radar waited for Sparky to speak before he could find a response to what he was being told.
"What's that? Huh? Something else? Sparky, what's it exactly? You can tell. Oh? Huh? Wow. They are? Chinese? Coming here? To 4077? We might have to bug out? Sparky, are you sure this is true? Can you confirm it," Radar was getting a little more worried the more he listened to Sparky. "What? 'Cuse me? Would you repeat that? Only a rumor? Sparky, listen to me! We've dealt with 'plosions, a missile from CIA, sniper, shellfires! You name it, we had it! Are they coming? You can't tell? It's just a rumor? Alright. Fine."
Radar listened to Sparky who said something else to him. "Huh? What's that Spark? Don't tell anyone? Sparky, Colonel Blake should know. Why? He's C.O here. He runs the outfit. Uh, look Sparky? Do me a favor, and see if this rumor is true. Don't want everyone panicking that we'd have to bug out thanks to Chinese Commies. You will? Thanks, Sparky. That means a bunch."
It looks like Sparky was finishing up with what he had to say to Radar at that moment.
"Okay, Spark. I'll hear from you when you find out more. Good. Thanks a lot," Radar thanked him. "Sure. Right. I'll talk soon. Gotcha. Hear back from ya too Sparky. Yes. Bye Sparky."
From there, Radar hung up the call by putting the phone speaker back where it belongs. Once he was done with that, he sat down right in front of his desk. He had to take in what he was told.
Did they have to bug out of the 4077? Were the Chinese Communists invading their perimeter, which was located in Uijeongbu? And how could they tell for sure if this was going to happen? All of these questions only left Radar wanting more answers to confirm if it was true.
If only he could find out from HQ for himself. But the chances are HQ might not be taking calls right now, seeing that getting a hold of them successfully was unlikely. So all Radar could do right now is just sit there and take in everything that Sparky told him.
He did nothing for several minutes until he saw Henry Blake enter his office with the golf bag with golf clubs in it. It would appear that he had returned from golfing just recently, given by his expression and how he was planning on unwinding now that he was all done with golfing. Henry got Radar's attention by giving him a greeting.
"Hello Radar," Henry greeted. "Anything happened at the fort while I was out golfing?"
"Oh no sir," Radar looked at him and shook his head. "Just a phone call from Sparky."
"Well, that's always a good thing," Henry admitted. "Anything new from HQ?"
"Not that I've heard sir." Radar said.
"Any info on when we could expect casualties?" Henry queried.
"Not a thing sir," Radar remarked.
"Oh. Welp, that ain't a bad thing, for the most part," Henry stated. "Unless of course, you get bored after a while."
"I've known that sir."
"So, nothing important I should know about?"
"No Colonel Blake. There's nothing sir."
"Oh," Henry sighed as he turned around and walked straight for his office. He then overheard what Radar said out loud.
"Only a rumor I was told."
Right after Radar said that did Henry stopped in his tracks. Curious as to what he was talking about, Henry Blake slowly turned around to face Radar to get some answers.
"What rumor Radar?" Henry queried.
"The one I'm can't speak about," Radar answered hastily.
"Well Radar, if you can't tell me, then it's not prezactly a rumor," Henry said sheepishly. "It's a secret."
"Uh, right sir," Radar said shyly.
"Welp, let's hear it," Henry encouraged him to speak. "What's the big secret that you supposedly don't want to have spread all across the M*A*S*H four-oh-double-seven Radar?"
"Uh, well sir, keep a lid on it," Radar approached Henry and decided to whisper it to him. "But Sparky says a rumor's gone out. Saying we might have to bug out."
"Bug out? Us? Are you sure about this Radar," Henry was shocked by what Radar just told him.
"Only what Sparky told me was a rumor," Radar muttered. "Also told that Chinese Commies might invade the area. Says we'll need to bug out if necessary."
"Oh Radar. Is that all?" Henry felt a laugh coming on, but he kept it in for Radar's sake.
"Yes sir," Radar admitted.
"You wanna know what I think," Henry came up with something. "I think you and Sparky have been exchanging gossip again. That's what this is."
"Uh, sure didn't sound like it sir," Radar admitted.
"Well don't worry too much about it Radar," Henry said. "I'm sure if there's a bug-out, we'd hear directly from HQ."
"That's where Sparky heard a rumor from sir," Radar revealed to him.
"It did?" That got Henry's attention, as this could be serious.
"What I said, sir." Radar nodded.
"Oh, well ain't that something," Henry said. "That might be serious."
"Or it's just a rumor like you said, Colonel Blake."
"That's also a possibility Radar," Henry rubbed his chin before he came up with an idea. "I'll tell you what Radar? I'll talk to someone about this rumor that you heard about from Sparky, and see if anything comes up from it. Whaddaya say to that Radar?"
"That depends. Who're you gonna talk to?" Radar had to ask the Colonel.
"I dunno, to be honest," Henry murmured. "I was thinking of going to Father Mulcahy, but I don't think this situation calls for religion and some advice from a priest. So I'm afraid the Father is out of the question."
"Who else is there?" Radar queried.
"Welp, there's always Major Peterson," Henry said thoughtfully. "He's always reasonable in many predicaments. Plus, he probably knows a thing or two about having to bug out since he was in the army. I guess Peterson could be someone I go to."
"Yeah. Major's very trusting," Radar admitted. "Perhaps 'plaining it to him might help."
"Okay doke, then. It's settled," Henry sighed. "I'll go talk with Major Peterson about this, and see what he'll say about it."
"Right sir," said Radar.
"Just as soon as I put away my golfing bag," Henry stated.
"Roger, Colonel Blake, sir," Radar remarked.
With that, Henry headed for his tent to put away the golfing stuff before he heads to Andrew's tent to bring up the rumor of needing to bug out with him. This was going to be a crazy experience. And it was clear that this rumor would spread throughout the whole outfit...
OUTSIDE OF ANDREW'S TENT - 13:58
After having put his golf bag back into his tent, Henry had gone straight for Andrew's tent. Once he was in front of his tent, he knocked at the door several times to see if Andrew was there. He heard some scrambling noise and stuff being moved around before he got a response from the Major.
"Who is it?" Andrew queried.
"It's Colonel Blake," Henry announced. "I need to talk with you about something. Is there anyone in there with you?"
"What makes you say that Colonel," Andrew wondered.
"Well, I heard some noise going on in there," Henry stated. "So I assume that someone is in there with you."
"What do you want Colonel," he heard Margaret's voice from inside.
"Can I come in you two?" Colonel Blake asked. "What I need to say is important, where no one else can hear us."
"Ah alright, Colonel," Major Peterson permitted him. "You can come in."
Seeing that as his invitation, Henry entered the tent to see Andrew and Margaret right in the center. Their clothes were a little wrinkly, and Andrew had a couple of kiss marks on his face. Henry disregarded that as he closed the door behind him.
"Alright Colonel, what's this about," Major Houlihan questioned. "Major Peterson and I were in the middle of something important."
"Sorry for the inconvenience sir." Andrew apologized.
"Well, that doesn't matter," Henry insisted. "What does matter is what I'm about to tell you."
"Alright. So let's hear it." Andrew encouraged.
"Gladly," Henry started pacing back and forth. "Now there's been a rumor going on at HQ, and that it has something to do with the 4077th M*A*S*H. Radar got word from Sparky about something major."
"Well, there's always rumors going on at HQ," Margaret murmured. "If it's from them, it's got to be important."
"How does this rumor involve the 4077 in any way, sir," Andrew asked.
"Welp, Major, if you must know," Henry came out with it. "There's a chance that we may bug out from here."
"What," Andrew didn't think he heard that. "Bug out? Are you sure?"
"Yup. Straight from the horse's mouth," Henry nodded. "There's also rumor of the Chinese invading our sector, and that we'd need to clear out of here."
"If it's the Chinese, then it would make sense that we'd bug out," Margaret admitted. "But are you sure that it's possible? It's just a rumor."
"I'm not absotively sure as of yet Major," Henry sighed. "But it's possible."
"Yeah. I'm not unaware of how a 'bug out' works since it happened in the army all the time," Andrew stated. "And it happened whenever the enemy side invaded our side of the warzone."
"Prezactly what I had in mind," Henry agreed. "I can't be sure if it's true or not. Radar's waiting for word from Sparky to find out if it's the real deal or not."
"What should we do until it does happen?" Margaret queried.
"Welp, for starters, you two better keep this under wraps. Be on your toes, and not let everyone get frantic about some silly rumor that may or may not be true," Henry issued. "Meanwhile, I'm gonna have to talk with Pierce and McIntyre about this, so they can be ready for anything too."
"What about Frank?" Andrew brought up. "He gets into a state of paranoia just from thinking that an air raid is going to hit us."
"I'm aware of that Peterson, and...I suppose I should tell him too," Henry sighed. "Now remember, keep a lid on this discussion."
"Yes Colonel," Margaret said calmly. "We'll be ready for when it does happen."
"Okay doke, that's pretty swell," Henry said. "If you folks may excuse me, I better head to the Swamp and tell the captains about this. Maybe I'll have a drink or two with them while I'm at it."
"Alright sir," Andrew remarked. "We'll be seeing you, sir."
"Good day, sir," Margaret said.
"Alrighty," Henry headed for the door. "I'll see you around."
With that, Henry opened the door and walked out of the tent, and closed the door behind him. Once he was gone, the two Major had to exchange looks about what they were told, and the possibility that they would have to bug out of the area when the Chinese show up. It wasn't confirmed as of now, but they'd stay on alert just in case.
Putting that aside, for now, Andrew and Margaret resumed their little kissing fest that they were having before Henry came into the tent. They decided to enjoy it while they can since they were still at the M*A*S*H 4077. They were gonna need it...
IN THE MESS TENT - 15:27
It only took a couple of hours before the rumor was spread throughout the whole camp. It got so drastic that Henry had to call a camp meeting in the mess tent, in regards to the rumor of having to bug out of the 4077. Everyone was in the audience, waiting to see what Henry had to say about the matter.
At that moment, Henry Blake tried to get everyone's attention while they were speaking.
"Alright! May I have your attention, please," Henry hollered with no success. "I said may I have your attention, for just a minute."
Henry was still unable to get them to stop. It got to the point where Radar had to stand up and get them to pipe down.
"QUIET EVERYONE!" Radar yelled, which got everyone to stop talking on the spot.
"Thank you Radar," Henry thanked him before facing the audience. "Alright folks. I'm pretty sure your all wondering, why I gathered this emergency meeting today."
"It's about the possible bug-out that might happen, right," Andrew took a guess.
"Uh yes Major. It's about that possible bug out," Henry continued. "Now as you may all know, there's a chance that the Chinese might invade our sector, and that means our compound might be under attack when the Chinese show up. But then again, it might not happen. So who knows?"
"Well I for one know enough to insist that a bug out and evacuation should be in full effect," Frank said while standing up. "Seeing that the Chinese are out for the American blood and the blood of those who are in alliance with the USA, it is commendable that we start packing up our belongings and relocate our M*A*S*H to another location. The M stands for Mobile, repeat, Mobile. And to avoid all attacks from the Chinese, it would be wise to start considering a practice bug out in case it does happen."
"Well Frank, I'll have you know that it's not confirmed yet, but I'm considering the possibility," Henry had that forced smile on his face.
"What about the possibility that the Chinese would like to make peace and play a simple game of poker with us," Hawkeye said, not taking this seriously.
"Why shucks, I'm all for that," Trapper agreed with him. "It could be an all-or-nothing winner takes all competition for everyone involved."
"You still won't admit it, won't you," Frank scowled at the two captains. "We are facing the possibility of being taken prisoner by the Chinese if we don't clear out in time! Not to mention the breaking down the morale of our brave freckle-faced kids at the front."
"Okay, let's simmer down on the subject," Henry insisted as the phone rang straight from his office. "Radar!? Would you-"
"Get the phone and see who it is," Radar said along with Henry. "Yes sir."
As Radar walked out, Margaret stood up and had something to say about what could happen to them.
"If I may say a few words Colonel, I say we should be prepared for the worst," Margaret commented. "The Chinese have been known to ambush when we least expect it. But we should also clear out on account that there's the possibility of capture, along with torture, brainwashing, and, yes, even rape."
"Rape a doctor?" Trapper retorted.
"I'll hit him with my purse." Hawkeye joked.
"Knock it off, guys! This is no laughing matter," Andrew scolded them. "And to be perfectly honest, I can't stand the thought of any one of us getting raped by anyone. It's just terrible."
"Alright Andrew, then I'll whack the Chinese with Klinger's purse," Hawkeye told him.
"Never on a first date, sir," Klinger called out.
"We can stop them with chopsticks too while were at it," Trapper deadpanned.
"Okay, let's can the tomfoolery," Henry got them to stop. "The Majors have a point. We dealt with the Chinese before when it came to exchanging American G.I. soldiers in Rainbow Bridge. And for that matter, anything is possible."
"Uh, could we leave a couple of prayers in hope that the Chinese don't show up Colonel?" Father Mulcahy suggested.
"I'll keep that under consideration Father," Henry smiled sheepishly.
"We can all pray that this is just a hoax and that we shouldn't even be in Korea," Hawkeye retorted.
"The day that happens will be the day Frank learns to be a better surgeon," Trapper huffed.
"Now you leave me out of this," Frank barked.
"Alrighty, folks! So my only advice to you is to stay on alert, straighten up and fly right, in case we do need to bug out," Henry issued. "Now this man's outfit should be ready for anything that comes by. Whether it's explosions, missile fires, a sniper, shellfire, and even a Sherman tank. Having the Chinese invade our area would be far worse than any of those."
"No kidding," Andrew remarked as Radar came back in with a yellow flashcard that he wrote on. "We couldn't have them take any of us as prisoners of war."
"Yes. Prezactly what I was saying Major," Henry agreed as Radar approached him. "Becoming war prisoners should be the furthest thing from our mind."
"Hey sir," Radar got his attention. "Message from HQ came in. It's written on this card."
"Now let me remind you all that this is just a rumor, as of now," Henry took the card and looked at it as he continued talking. "So I can guarantee the lot of you that until it becomes true, there is no chance that we have to...HOLY COW!"
"What is it, Colonel?" Andrew asked.
"This is the big one folks," Henry then revealed the emergency. "Message from HQ just came in. The Chinese are already starting to head for our sector! We have to bug out of here immediately! We need to leave in three hours!"
This got everyone shocked, as they couldn't believe what they heard. They were 'really' bugging out of the 4077th. At that moment, everyone had to start packing immediately on the double.
"What did I tell you, Hawk? Calm before the storm," Trapper retorted as he and Hawkeye left the mess tent. "And now here it is."
"Why don't I write a letter to the Peace Talk, complaining about how this had to happen," Hawkeye huffed as they left.
Immediately afterwards, everyone else dashed for the exit as everyone cleared out to get ready to bug out. That left only Henry and Radar, who had to figure out where they have to relocate themselves to.
"Radar, please get on the phone and call O'Brien to see if he can find a new location for M*A*S*H 4077," Henry and Radar said in unison. "Yes sir."
As Radar headed for his office to take care of that, Henry went for his tent to pack up his belongings before the tents had to come down for the bug out. This was gonna be one crazy scenario for everyone...
IN RADAR'S OFFICE - 15:48
"Yes sir. Got it, sir. Have the coordinates all written out sir?" Radar was on the phone talking to chopper pilot O'Brien. "Great sir. What's that? Ten miles from where 4077th M*A*S*H is? Are you sure? Okay. Well, that'll do. I guess. Okay, sir. Thanks so much for the help. Yes. Yes, I'll see you later. Alright. Bye."
With that, Radar hung up the phone and grabbed a piece of paper that he wrote on and headed straight for Henry's tent, or what would be of his tent, since the Colonel was currently packing his belongings at this very moment...
Speaking of which, we see Henry packing up his suitcases, footlocker, and baggage with all of his belongings that were being taken to the new location where they were going to set up camp as a result of bugging out.
Of course, it would only be temporary, but it was pretty much mandatory for everyone. There was also the fact that the Chinese heading their way would also result in some casualties popping up for them to treat at the new location.
Henry kept packing his stuff when suddenly, Radar was seen knocking at his door.
"Sir? You got a minute?" He asked.
"One momentito," Henry chimed before packing up one of his suitcases. "What's the scoop Radar?"
"Uh, I just called O'Brien sir. Got word about where the new compound can be set up," Radar gave Henry the piece of paper. "Those are the coordinates, and it's ten miles away from here."
"Alrighty. That shouldn't be a problem for us," Henry looked at the paper. "That seems to be the perfect place for us. We should be good when we get there."
"I agree Colonel Blake sir," Radar said. "Permission to be dismissed, sir?"
"Sure Radar," Henry stated. "Go and pack up your belongings so we can get ready to shove off. Including your teddy bear, and whatever else you have on hand."
"Yes, sir," Radar said before turning around and heading back to his office to pack up.
Once he was gone, Henry resumed packing up his stuff and made sure his tent was cleared up before the tent comes down for the move.
I just can't believe that we're bugging out. This sort of thing never happened before. Henry thought. And to think that I found this outfit and had it set up with my own bare hands. Well, if we need to evacuate, then we'll have to evacuate. I just hope the move is as painless as possible.
Keeping that thought fresh on his mind, Henry continued to pack up all his stuff. He had made sure that some extra army hospital vehicles could show up to take everyone's baggage with them. It was necessary since the camp was made up of a lot of people that were stationed here. They would need as many vehicles as they could get. Not just for him, but everyone else too...
OUTSIDE OF ANDREW'S FORMER TENT - 16:25
From the looks of it, everyone was running out of their respective tents with their suitcases, footlocker, and baggage packed with all of their belongings, along with gurneys being used for stuff that couldn't fit in a suitcase or bag.
In particular, Andrew was seen walking out of his tent with several suitcases in his hands as he placed them down in a pile that his footlocker and baggage were already placed currently. Andrew was still surprised to hear that they were clearing out. But knowing how the procedure works, he was well aware of what they had to do.
"Alright, I guess that's the last of my things," Andrew dusted his hands up. "Now I just have to wait for the trucks, ambulances, and buses to show up so my stuff could get placed into it along with everyone elses' belongings."
"Hey Andrew," that voice came from Margaret as she also packed all his belongings up, ready to be escorted to the new location. "You got all of your stuff packed up, huh darling?"
"I sure did Margaret," Andrew smiled. "You seem to have all of your stuff packed up too dear."
"That I do," Margaret said. "I can't believe we're bugging out of here."
"Neither can I," Andrew agreed. "But in the army, we have to be ready for anything."
"And that means anything," Margaret grinned. "Do you think that we'll clear out in time?"
"I don't just think it," Andrew informed her. "I know it."
"Yeah," Margaret chuckled slightly at that.
It was at that moment when several vehicles entered the compound, and then an announcement was heard on the P.A. system.
"ATTENTION, ALL PERSONNEL! THE BUSES, AMBULANCES, AND TRUCKS THAT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR HAVE JUST ARRIVED! SO PACK ALL OF YOUR BELONGINGS IN THE VEHICLE NICE AND SAFELY, AND GET READY TO BUG OUT!"
The two Majors saw the vehicles pulled up, as that meant that they had to get ready to load up the vehicles with their belongings.
"Well, I guess we better load up our stuff," Andrew assumed. "Except for one or two suitcases, we should put the rest of our stuff in those escort vehicles."
"You said it, Andrew," Margaret smiled. "By the way, do you know if we'll be riding in the same Jeep together?"
"Of course we are. We're partners," Andrew told him. "One of my suitcases and one of your suitcases will go in the back seat of the jeep, and the rest of our luggage can get loaded up in another vehicle."
"I'm happy to hear that honey," Margaret gave him that flirtatious look. "Shall we get our stuff to the truck?"
"Sure thing buttercup," Andrew smirked. "Let's load up our stuff."
Without another word, the two Majors took their footlockers towards one of the escort vehicles with the full intention of loading them into it. And it seems that everyone else was following their example and loading their stuff into one of the vehicles that pulled in...
In particular, we see Hawkeye and Trapper walking out of the Swamp while pushing a gurney. On the gurney was their gin still. There was no way that they were going to be settling into a temporary location without their still. Their other stuff was already packed up for them to put into a jeep, but they decided to handle their still first since they built the still together.
"I just can't believe it Trap," Hawkeye complained. "We're 'actually' having to bug out of this cesspool."
"You better believe it, Hawk. Because that's how the war works," Trapper told him dryly. "Let's just hope the area we're settling at isn't worse than this snake pit."
"With any amount of luck, we should be able to make it until the bug out is up," Hawkeye insisted. "Or maybe when the war is over."
"Right," Trapper rolled his eyes. "Just help me get this still onto one of the trucks."
"I'm way ahead of you Trapper," Hawkeye said.
At that moment, the truck they were approaching was being supervised by Frank as he was blowing a whistle and ordering some of the corpsmen to load up some of the military and surgical equipment into the truck, complete with him bellowing.
"ALRIGHT EVERYONE, LOAD 'EM UP! LOAD 'EM UP! LET'S GET THIS STUFF INTO THE TRUCK! COME ON! PICK UP THE PACE!" Frank hollered while blowing his whistle. "THE CHINESE ARE COMING, SO WE GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE, ON THE DOUBLE! GET A MOVE ON PEOPLE! MOVE IT!"
"Maybe we should leave Frank to deal with the Chinese himself," Hawkeye retorted. "If we're lucky, they'll leave us some chopsticks and fortune cookies."
"That's what I was thinking of myself Hawkeye," Trapper smirked as they pushed the gurney towards the truck that Frank was supervising.
Of course, Frank saw the two Captains doing this, and he wasn't impressed. Wanting to put a stop to it, he blew the whistle and yelled at them.
"HALT! STOP RIGHT THERE PIERCE AND MCINTYRE!" Frank bellowed before approaching them, in which they stopped on the spot. "Just what do you two think you're doing with that distillery?"
"Gee I dunno Frank. We were thinking of loading it into the truck, so it could be packaged and mailed out of here, and be shipped straight to the states," Hawkeye answered sarcastically.
"If we're lucky, the gin still should be able to fly first class without breakin'," Trapper also gave a sardonic remark.
"Not on this military compound," Frank barked. "This truck is for military and surgical equipment only! No personal belongings are to be loaded into this truck when I'm running this operation!"
"Frank? How would you like to have your nose surgically broken to the point of needing operation?" Hawkeye threatened him.
"Then we'd probably get enough blood from it to donate to the Red Cross and for blood transfusion," Trapper said cynically.
"You guys are so sneaky. Well, you're not pulling a fastball on me buster," Frank remained firm. "That still is not going into this truck. It's staying here, and that's an order!"
"It's coming with us, and that's a threat," Hawkeye countered.
"Maybe you've forgotten, but Hawkeye and I were the ones to have built this distillery in the first place Needle Nose," Trapper snorted.
"Oh, buzz off. I don't need your insults," Frank huffed as Klinger came by the area with a rack of dresses on wheels, which got Frank's attention. "CORPORAL!"
"Sir!" Klinger stopped and gave him a salute when he stopped right in front of Frank.
"Where do you think you're going with those dresses Corporal?" Frank asked in annoyance.
"I'm bringing them along for the ride Major," Klinger stated. "I am allowed to bring these with us, am I?"
"No you are not," Frank scowled. "These vehicles are for military and surgical equipment only! Those dresswares are to be kept here with the rest of the useless garbage!"
"Oh come on sir. Be reasonable," Klinger begged. "A man has a right to his wardrobe, doesn't he?"
"Frankly Corporal, I don't give a whit about your wardrobe," Frank growled. "You aren't bringing that stuff along!"
"Please, sir! I mean look at this! This is my brocade," Klinger showed him the brocade. "It's from the Spiegel catalog. I always say, 'Buy American'."
"It's from Chicago," Frank stated upon reading the tag.
"Oh, sure, like Polish ham." Klinger chuckled.
"Klinger, these are not the official gear, and they'll not be transported on a vehicle of the United States army. You will have to give them up!" Frank shoved the brocade back into Klinger's arms.
"Not a chance," Klinger declared. "I will never give up the Klinger collection."
Frank was about to give another retort at that, but before he could, he saw another person heading to the truck with non-military equipment. This time it was Radar, and he was pushing a gurney with all the cages that had his animal friends in them. In addition to that, he also had a goat walking by his side with a rope being used as a leash.
"Come on, Pokey," Radar assured him "Keep up now."
The goat started bleating as Frank was getting irritated. This is the third person attempting to load up personal stuff onto the truck. He had to put stop to him too.
"Cease!" Frank ordered the company clerk to stop.
"Whoa. It's okay, Snuffy," Radar comforted one of his pets. "It's just Major Burns."
"And just where are you going with those cretins?" Frank asked impatiently.
"Just gonna put 'em on the truck," Radar answered. "So if you don't mind."
"Negative." Frank denied him from doing so.
"Don't get upset," Radar told one of his rabbits. "Just eat your carrot slowly."
"Let me remind you Corporal that nonexperimental animals are neither military nor medical," Frank said bluntly. "Therefore, they will not be transported on a government vehicle."
"These are my friends, sir," Radar cried. "They've gotta come with us!"
"No they don't," Frank scowled. "And soldier, there are no friends in wartime."
"How are they supposed to get to the new M*A*S*H?" Radar asked.
"They don't. They are to remain here with the rest of the personal junk," Frank grumbled.
"If your lucky Radar, the rabbit will hop, the guinea pigs can walk, and the goat can gallop their way to the new location along with the rest of your pals," Hawkeye suggested dryly.
"If a horse can gallop, what's stoppin' a goat from doing the same thing?" Trapper questioned.
"You two buttinskys stay out of this," Frank yelled at them before turning to face Radar again.
"Oh come on, sir," Radar begged. "I mean Major Burns, haven't you ever had a pet of your own?"
"Just a canary," Frank said. "Never sang a note. And it bit me."
"Maybe it thought that you were trying to operate on it," Hawkeye suggested.
"Or maybe you didn't talk to it right." Radar gave a more rational possibility.
"Are you telling a doctor how to talk to a bird?" Frank was getting irate.
"No. I think he's trying to tell you how to keep a pussycat from eating the canary," Trapper answered dully.
Frank glared at him to get him to stay out of this, before facing Radar again.
"I can't leave 'em here," Radar wailed. "They might get killed!"
"Oh boo hoo," Frank scoffed. "If you start to cry, I'll give you a good slap."
"You lay one hand on Radar, Frank, and I'll make sure that all of your teeth get knocked out of your mouth," Hawkeye threatened him. "And I can do that by landing my fist in your jaw."
"That goes double for me Frank," Trapper sneered. "So lay off the poor kid."
"Didn't I tell you two to mind your 'own' beeswax," Frank snapped. "In any case, I don't need the threats!"
"Sir! Please! My Klinger Collection is getting wrinkly!" Klinger got his attention.
"And our still needs a nice warm home," Hawkeye said.
"I don't care about the dresses, or the distillery, or the animals! They're not coming with us!" Frank howled. "And anyone who tries to disobey a superior officer will have to deal with me!"
"Ah, Frank. I wish you hadn't said that." Hawkeye gave him that fake smirk. "My fists are willing to have at it with you."
"Mine too," Trapper agreed. "And they aren't on fire either."
"You two will be court-martialed if you lay one fist on me," Frank warned them.
"It'll be worth dealing with you Frank," Hawkeye told him.
"You let us load the still, dresses, and animals into this truck, or else," Trapper warned him with a glare on his face.
"No! My decision is final!" Frank stood his ground.
"You asked for it Frank," Hawkeye said as Andrew packed his stuff onto one of the ambulances. "Hope your mouth has teeth insurance when Trapper and I break your jaw."
"You wouldn't dare," Frank sneered.
They didn't say another word as the two Captains were about to beat Frank to a pulp. However, before things got ugly, Andrew witnessed this and he got them to stop.
"STOP! HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!" Andrew hollered as he approached the scene. "Now may I ask what the hell is going on here!?"
"These crumbs were planning on putting personal belongings into a military vehicle," Frank answered. "And these vehicles are for military and medical equipment only. Nothing else!"
"Oh yeah, Frank," Hawkeye retorted. "Because a gin still is not exactly military. Nor is a rack of dresses or cages with animals in them."
"Don't forget the goat," Trapper reminded him. "The goat makes great milk, so that isn't military either."
"Don't give me any of that Captains," Frank sneered. "All personal belongings are forbidden from these trucks. All belongings personal or otherwise are being brought in a different vehicle. Or they stay behind!"
"You know Frank, your the one to talk about not bringing personal belongings," Hawkeye brought up.
"We saw your footlocker, Frank. And from what we saw, your 'military' equipment consists of a couple of magazines, a rifle, a special pair of panties, and a hari-kari dagger that you never used," Trapper pointed out Frank's hypocrisy. "So mind telling us again what this truck is for? Ferret Face?"
"Well, I'm entitled! And as second-in-command, I insist on getting the approval to bring my personal belongs," Frank defended. "Of which is none of your beeswax, and you should keep out of other people's property!"
"Oh right. Heaven forbids that we all can't be a second-in-command," Hawkeye had his hands out in an exasperated manner. "Maybe we should get Colonel Blake to give us a second opinion."
"You will not," Frank stopped him. "I'm in charge of loading things here, and it goes exactly how I want it to go."
"Why don't we get Andrew's opinion," Trapper turned to face Andrew.
"Alright. Alright," Andrew sighed. "So it seems that we have a conflict with what we should bring with us."
"Well it wouldn't be a problem if these crumbs stopped trying to disobey orders," Frank yelled.
"Frank, how would you like to be a crumb," Hawkeye sneered. "We can make that happen by breaking every bone in your body."
"Or at the very least, your skull," Trapper growled. "That is of course since we can't find a heart in your rib cage."
"You two are asking for it," Frank remained firm.
"Sir, my animals!" Radar cried.
"And my Klinger Collection!" Klinger howled. "What'll become of it!"
"They aren't coming with us, and neither is that still," Frank bellowed. "So back off! Or I'll be forced to show my unpleasant side."
"That does it," Hawkeye had enough. "Frank, how would you like a knuckle sandwich?"
"Along with a bloody nose that's broken, and a black eye that can't open up," Trapper was all for it.
"You crumbs don't scare me one bit," Frank gloated. "My decision is final!"
Hawkeye and Trapper didn't say anything. Things were gonna get bloody before the Chinese come, and Andrew knew it. Seeing how things will escalate in a matter of seconds, Andrew took both of his index fingers, put them into his mouth, and let out a loud whistle for them to hear.
"ENOUGH! ENOUGH!" Andrew roared, getting them to stop. "Now there won't be any fighting taking place in this compound, whether I'm here or not. I won't stand for it. Am I understood?"
Nobody said a word as they nodded. As there was still a conflict that needed to be resolved, Andrew pinched the bridge of his nose and came up with a proper solution.
"Alright, look, I have an idea," Andrew pointed to the other truck next to the truck that they were in front of. "That truck over there can be used for personal belongings, which includes the gin still, the dress collection, and the pets. So bring that stuff over to that truck while this truck is for military and medical supplies and equipment."
"Ah, good show Andrew," Hawkeye complimented him. "And just in time too."
"Yeah," Trapper agreed. "Frank was just about ready to be given a permanent surgery once we were finished with him."
"Never mind that! Just get that still into that truck," Andrew ordered. "And Klinger, get your dresses into that truck too."
"Aye aye, sir," Klinger saluted as he pushed the rack on wheels to the truck while the two captains pushed that gurney over there as well.
"And Radar," Andrew looked towards the company clerk. "You can also put your animal friends into that truck for safekeeping."
"Right," Radar accepted. "And sir? Would it be fine if Pokey the goat rides with me in a jeep? Pokey gets rather nervous in a dark place."
"Hmmm, I don't see why not," Andrew said thoughtfully. "Alright Radar, the goat can ride with you. But the rest of your pets go into the truck. Understand?"
"Yes, sir," Radar looked towards his pets. "C'mon guys. Let's get you into the nice warm truck."
With that, Radar escorted his pets towards that truck that Andrew pointed to as his animal friends were going to keep the still and the Klinger Collection company along with what other personal stuff goes in there.
"I can't believe you allowed that Major," Frank expressed his displeasure. "These vehicles are for the property of the army and hospital only! They were not allowed to bring personal stuff for the ride!"
"Frank, we don't have time to argue. We have to bug out, so just accept it," Andrew sighed as he started to walk away. But after walking five feet, he turned around to face Frank again to point something out to him. "Unless you want me to remind you of the personal stuff your bringing, and that your not the only one here who's entitled."
"Uh, fair point Major," Frank pulled on his collar nervously. "I'm not gonna argue."
"Good. Now let's get this stuff packed," Andrew remarked. "We need to get out of here fast."
"Right," Frank sighed before commanding the others to hurry up with the loading. "ALRIGHT, MEN! LET'S GO!"
"Hey, excuse me, Major," that voice belonged to Henry, who had his fishing gear and golfing equipment in his hands. "Where can this Illini Colonel put this stuff? It's rather personal."
"Put it into that truck over there," Andrew pointed towards the truck that Hawkeye, Trapper, Radar, and Klinger were packing their personal belongings in. "That truck will be used for personal belongings that don't fit in a suitcase or bag."
"Great. Thanks a bunch for that," Henry thanked him. "Because after this, I gotta pack up the stuff in my office. I can't be expected to go anywhere without some of the stuff I have in there."
"Very well sir," Andrew nodded. "That works for me."
"Alrighty," Henry gave him one last look before heading to that truck to put his stuff in there.
Afterwards, Andrew decided to work on loading up some more stuff into the vehicles so they could get out of there safely. There was still more to go, but by the looks of it, it was getting hectic at the 4077...
LATER ON...
By this point, everything was just about packed up and loaded onto one of the vehicles. Now the corpsmen in the outfit were preparing to bring the tents down as they pulled down the canvas and folded them up like they would any other tent.
All the tents and stuff were stripped and taken down, leaving nothing but wired windows in their wakes. The only things that remained standing by the end of it were the intercom speaker, the OR building, and the building that the Officer's Club was formerly located.
By the time everything was stripped clear from the 4077, and everything was loaded into one of the extra vehicles that came in, they had decided to take their leave. And that was a good idea since the Chinese were expected to invade the area in exactly 30 minutes.
With that, everyone got into a jeep, in which all the jeeps were in a single file line. Of course, the jeep in front that was leading the pack was being ridden by Henry Blake and Frank Burns, since the former was the commanding officer, while the latter was the second in command.
"Okay Frank, are we all set," Henry asked, sitting behind the wheel.
"Just about Colonel," Frank remarked. "Everything that's ours has been loaded into one of the vehicles, and we are just about ready to leave."
"Righty-o Frank," that seemed to satisfy Henry. "So we're ready to shove off."
"Yes Colonel," Frank then turned to face the other vehicles behind him. "ALRIGHT, LET'S MOVE OUT!"
With that, Henry started up the jeep and started to slowly drive it out of the compound, with the rest of the vehicles following right behind them. They were making their way out of the former M*A*S*H 4077, intending to set up the camp in a new location.
Behind the jeep that Henry and Frank were in was a jeep driven by Hawkeye as he and Trapper were riding in it together.
"Well Trap, we had some fond memories here, and some not-so-fond memories here," Hawkeye admitted. "But now we are leaving this place."
"Just wait, the place we'll be moving to will be far worse than this one," Trapper said. "Just you wait and see Hawk."
"That's all we can do," Hawkeye gave him a smirk. "Wait and see."
"Right," Trapper shook his head as his partner drove the jeep.
Behind them was another jeep, that was being driven by Klinger. Accompanying Klinger in the passenger seat was Father Mulcahy, and in the back seat behind him was Radar and the goat named Pokey.
"Dear Lord. I must say, I gonna miss the good that came out of this place," Father Mulcahy admitted. "May God provide for us in the new location that we are moving to, and provide nourishments and necessary resources. Amen."
"Don't worry Father," Klinger assured him. "I'm pretty sure the new place will be decent, just like this place was. I can remember all the times I tried to get that Section 8 Discharge."
"And when you failed to get out," Mulcahy gave him a light chuckle.
"Don't remind me," Klinger said dryly.
"Easy Pokey. Easy. Good boy. You're fine," Radar was comforting his goat who bleated. "That's it. Your safe."
"Hey Radar, if your keeping that goat back there, try not to let him chew off the seat," Klinger suggested. "And keep him from trying to nibble at my hat. This is one of my favorite spring hats you know."
"I will Klinger," Radar promised him. "Don't worry."
"You know Radar, I think Pokey and your other pets might like the new place too," Mulcahy insisted. "Let's just see if God can provide for them."
"Yes Father," Radar looked up. "Bless you, God."
Klinger said nothing else as he drove the jeep behind them.
And in the jeep behind them was the one being driven by Andrew. And accompanying Andrew in that jeep was Margaret, who was sitting up front in the passenger's seat.
"Well, I guess we're moving out," Andrew commented. "This might be a good experience for us, Margaret."
"Yeah Andrew," Margaret admired. "You are so brave and manly the way you react to us having to bug out of this area. It's a trait that every man should have."
"I'm pretty flattered by that dear," Andrew laughed heartily. "But it would be nice if other men had that same feat."
"You and me both darling," Margaret laughed before kissing Andrew on the mouth. "I love you, honey. I hope you remember that."
"I do," Andrew nodded with a smile. "And I love you too, buttercup."
"I wonder what the new camp will look like," Margaret had to wonder.
"We'll just have to wait and see for ourselves," he stated.
"You said it," she nodded before facing the road again along with Andrew.
Behind them were several other jeeps that had other doctors and nurses, along with corpsmen and other personnel that was stationed with them. In the back of the line were the trucks, ambulances, and buses that were carrying the luggage and supplies needed for the new M*A*S*H location, as well as personal belongings that don't fit in any suitcase or footlocker, or bags.
The new location was about 10 miles, so this would take a while. They only hoped to get there before the Chinese show up in this area. That was their top priority...
AT THE NEW M*A*S*H LOCATION - 17:33
It took a little bit of traveling, but the crew eventually made it to the spot that they were assigned to set up the M*A*S*H unit. There wasn't much aside from a plain grassy field with no land mines. There was a largely abandoned wood shack in the center, which could be where the OR could be located. Needless to say, this was where they would get themselves comfortable for now.
"Welp looks like we made it," Henry stretched his arms. "This is the new camping area for the four-oh-double-seven temporarily."
"Should I get the corpsmen to set up the surgical equipment in that building over there?" Frank felt like asking.
"If it's abandoned, then I don't see why not," Henry shrugged. "Though from what I was told, that building is supposed to be abandoned anyway. But get Radar and double-check for us just in case, Frank."
"Yes, sir," Frank saluted as he got out of the jeep and went to get Radar, along with the other corpsmen to unload the surgical supplies for the building.
"Well, get a look at this Trapper," Hawkeye motioned for him to see. "This is where we're setting up the compound."
"I was wrong Hawkeye. This isn't a hell hole. This is a barren waste dump," Trapper retorted bitterly. "I wouldn't be surprised if that building was falling apart and wouldn't be able to hold up the O.R."
"Well, we don't have much of a choice," Hawkeye sighed. "We need to operate somewhere. We have to start someplace."
"And where else would be better than that rundown building that's falling apart?" Trapper remarked sarcastically.
"Give it a chance Trap," Hawkeye assured him. "And besides, we still have the still."
"That's true Hawk," Trapper sighed. "Okay. I'll take your word on it."
"That's more like it," Hawkeye was impressed.
"This place doesn't look too bad, I guess," Andrew mused. "I mean it could be worse for us."
"Yeah, and just think, some wilderness is something that we need out here," Margaret stated.
"Can't argue with that Margaret," Andrew smirked. "I think we can manage."
"I think so too Andrew," Margaret agreed with him.
"Well, it doesn't look to be in the best of shape, but it is a shelter," Father Mulcahy pointed out. "And it can provide for us whatever relief we may need for the patients."
"No doubt about that Father," Klinger sighed. "I am just fortunate that we are away from where those Chinese are heading."
"Believe me, Klinger, I feel the same way." Mulcahy agreed with him.
"Alright men, let's unload all the medical and surgical supplies into this building on the double," Frank commanded. "Now, before the casualties show up."
The corpsmen wasted no time in doing what they were assigned to do.
"And Corporal? Are you absotively sure that that building is abandoned and isn't sheltering anyone else?" Frank had to double-check.
"Yes sir," Radar confirmed. "Checked through the windows, entered an unlocked door and everything. It's abandoned. And free to use as OR."
"Well, very good Corporal. That'll do," Frank remarked. "Let's just hope that OR is set up before we get our first set of casualties. We need to be ready for anything."
"I've heard that sir," Radar nodded.
Nobody said another word as the corpsmen unloaded the medical supplies and surgical equipment from the cargo vehicles; or trucks, ambulances, and buses. If they wanted to get this stuff done, they had to do it fast. So they picked up the pace with setting up OR.
However, the moment was killed when Radar heard something in the distance. As he listened to it, he realized that it was several choppers. And he knew what that meant.
"Uh oh, choppers," Radar before announcing to everyone. "INCOMING CHOPPERS! WE GOT WOUNDED! REPEAT! WE GOT WOUNDED!"
Several seconds later, everyone heard the chopper coming by the area with the wounded. It would appear that the war was back on track.
"Well Hawk, looks like our casualty-free vacation is over. The war is happening again," Trapper told him. "Just as I expected."
"Now come on Trap, no need to rub it in where it hurts," Hawkeye remarked. "Well, time to get back to work."
"At least we'll be able to check out how well the building holds up, right Margaret?" Andrew commented.
"That's true Andrew," Margaret nodded.
"Ready to work side by side, my dear?" Andrew queried with a smirk.
"Anytime with you, darling," Margaret gave him an identical smirk.
"Alrighty now. Everybody up and at 'em! The war is back on track," Henry announced. "The war waits for no one, and neither do the patients! So come on! Let's get a move on people!"
"We can't even set up camp without casualties showing up," Frank complained.
"Frank, if I were you, I'd join another outfit," Trapper suggested jokingly.
"Oh shut your face!" Frank snapped at him before storming into the building.
It was then all the doctors and nurses headed into the building with the corpsmen to arrange the place to be a good OR and everything else, including a scrub area. They then worked on getting the wounded through a triage that was set up, and then got them into the building, ready to be operated on. This was going to be one busy shift in OR for everyone in this new location...
INSIDE THE TEMPORARY SWAMP AT THE NEW LOCATION - 20:01
"Ah. I don't mind telling you Hawkeye, but I'm bushed. Today's OR session in that building was brutal, and it took even longer to set up this new camp," Trapper wiped his forehead while sitting in the lounge chair. "This place ain't any better than the original location we were stationed at currently."
"I know how you feel Trapper," Hawkeye said as he poured himself and Trapper a drink from the still they set up. "But just think of it this way. We at least have the still with us."
"Yeah. That's true," Trapper sighed. "I could use a belt of the good stuff anyway Hawk."
"You're in luck Trap. I got a glass just for you," Hawkeye handed him his glass. "The elixir of life, our prized possession, if I must say."
"No kidding there," Trapper took the glass and held it up. "What shall we drink to this time?"
"How about the fact that we went without casualties for so long? That and the fact that we aren't anywhere near the area that the Chinese invaded," Hawkeye pointed out.
"I'll drink to that," Trapper accepted. "Cheers?"
"Cheers," Hawkeye said.
They then clinked their glasses against each other before they started to drink down the beverage.
"By the way, I have to wonder if they even made it to our former sector." Hawkeye wondered.
"Search me. We moved so quickly, I didn't catch sight of them," Trapper shrugged. "What I've been thinking about is whether or not this whole bug out was a hoax."
"It's possible," Hawkeye said. "HQ has made several mistakes before, like sending us on a goose chase."
"Yeah," Trapper snorted. "The army is always messing things up for us army doctors. Or in our case, draftee doctors. But what can you do about it? It's just war."
"That's pretty much the beef of it," Hawkeye sighed as they continued drinking.
At that moment, Frank entered the Swamp and the two Captains took notice of him.
"Well look who it is," Hawkeye teased. "Where were you, Frankie? You were supposed to be back by bedtime."
"Oh, go soak your head, Pierce," Frank sneered.
"In gin or water?" Hawkeye asked rhetorically.
That question got Frank to huff and roll his eyes. "That's just like you two, to drink on a night like this. While you two drunks stay in here and drink your sorrows, I happen to be great with surviving in the wilderness. Yes sirree, Bob. I can handle this neck of the woods."
"Alright Frank, if you think you can stand this wilderness, why don't you go into the woods by your lonesome," Trapper suggested snidely.
"Pffft, yeah right," Frank scoffed as he walked over to his cot. "I'm not going to waste my time going through those woods at this hour. It wouldn't do them any good."
"Who's them, Frank?" Hawkeye queried.
"The others who are stationed with us! That's who," Frank snapped. "No need to have everyone else miss out on the experience."
"You're 'actually' afraid to do it, aren't you," Trapper teased.
"I am not!" Frank yelled.
"Sure you aren't Frank," Hawkeye gave him that smirk.
Frank only scowled and furrowed his eyebrows at that. But before he could come up with a proper retort, someone was heard knocking at the door. Moments later, it was Radar who came in.
"Excuse me? Did I say you could come in Corporal," Frank spat. "This is officer's country!"
"Right. So I've heard," Radar turned to face Hawkeye and Trapper. "'Cuse me Hawkeye and Trapper?"
"What do you want Radar?" Trapper queried.
"It's happy hour," Hawkeye added.
"Sorry sirs, but Colonel Blakes needs you in his quarters, right away. On the double," Radar told them. "You too, Major Burns."
"Henry needs us?" Trapper raised an eyebrow. "He's not having trouble with his tent, is he?"
"Being honest sir, no. It's not that," Radar shook his head. "His tent's fine. 'Sides, Majors Peterson and Houlihan are there already. And they're waiting for you three to show up."
"Well, we can't be fashionably late for Henry," Hawkeye stood up. "Let's go see what the ol' Joe wants from us."
"I'll go along with that," Trapper agreed as he also stood up.
"Well why does the Colonel need to see us at this time of night," Frank questioned. "Some of us are trying to relax after everything we did today."
"Frank, you are still welcome to get lost in the woods by yourself," Hawkeye suggested teasingly. "You can at least do it for your bunkmates that you know and loathes."
"Tough toenails Pierce. That's not gonna happen," Frank scoffed as he stood up and got off of his cot. "Let's go see what the Colonel wants from us that's important."
"Right sirs," Radar stepped out first and held the door open. "His quarter's this way. I'll lead."
"Impressive," Hawkeye remarked as he followed Radar. "Radar, our company clerk, has been temporarily promoted to our tour guide."
"Maybe he can take us through the scenic route to get to Henry's quarters," Trapper added as he was following behind Hawkeye.
"Oh go stuff your faces, you two," Frank barked, following behind Trapper as he was in the back of the line.
No one else said a word as they followed Radar straight to Henry's quarters. What they didn't know was that Henry had some news, and it was going to be a big surprise for everyone...
IN COLONEL BLAKE'S TEMPORARY QUARTERS - 20:21
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE HAVE TO MOVE BACK!?" Hawkeye was heard screaming at what Henry Blake just revealed to his senior medical crew.
"It's just like I said Pierce, HQ made a little mistake," Henry told him calmly. "'Apparently', the Chinese invading our perimeter was just a hoax, and it never happened. So we'll have to go back to where the camp was, originally."
"Terrific," Trapper huffed sarcastically. "If HQ knew it was a hoax, why did they make us bug out in the first place?"
"That's just it McIntyre. They didn't know it was a hoax," Henry remarked. "They didn't find out that it was a hoax until they recently checked their intelligence map and saw that no Chinese Communists were approaching our sector."
"So I guess we're back to square one, right Colonel," Andrew queried, to which Henry nodded. "I guess it's not too much of a problem. Just hearing about how the Chinese were coming was enough to start red alerts and send people packing. Even though it didn't happen, I still think this was necessary. I mean, better safe than sorry."
"Andrew is right," Margaret said. "There was no telling if the Chinese really would've gotten to our area and left us vulnerable. So we should bug out just in case something were to happen to us."
"Yeah. Essentially, it was a practice bug out," Henry remarked. "Only it felt more like the real deal."
"Hmph. I wouldn't be surprised if some degenerate like two Captains that are nameless, would've pulled this trick on us just to get us fired up," Frank gripped. "Would've wasted the time of not only our unit, but that of the U.S. Army in case a real invasion were to take hold."
"Yes Frank," Hawkeye snorted. "Some degenerate would pull something like this."
"I wouldn't be surprised, seeing that you two tricked Frank into thinking there was an air raid earlier this morning," Andrew deadpanned.
"They did what?" Margaret asked in shock.
"Just like I said," Andrew repeated. "They pulled a practical joke on him."
"Well, we thought it was funny," Trapper stated.
"I don't think it was funny at all," Frank grumbled.
"Neither do I," Margaret agreed.
"Same goes for me too. Air raids are to be taken seriously," Andrew commented. "The same goes for bugouts. Nothing to joke about."
"Uh, you know what? I'm not gonna ask," Henry wanted to stay out of it. "I do not want to get involved in whatever type of joke you two Captains caused."
Hawkeye and Trapper exchanged looks with each other as Henry shifted slightly, before getting back on track.
"Lookie here, the point of this is we have to move back to where the M*A*S*H 4077th was, originally," Henry reminded them.
"At this time of day?" Andrew raised an eyebrow.
"No. We had a busy day today. We'll move back first thing in the morning," Henry said. "At 5:00 am, we'll work on moving out of here and back to where we belong."
"Well, that's a good thing. We can't move back without having 8 hours of sleep and silence," Hawkeye stated. "That's what I always say."
"And besides, we're all pretty bushed from having moved out here today," Trapper stretched his arms. "Well, some of us more than others."
"Don't look at me," Frank scoffed. "I did just as much work as the rest of you."
"We know Frank," Andrew sighed. "And that's why we should all turn in early for the night, so we can get an early head start come tomorrow morning."
"Andrew's right. We better get some shuteye," Margaret agreed with a yawn.
"Want me to get some sleep too sir," Radar felt like asking.
"Yeah Radar," Henry told them. "You are all dismissed for now. I'll let everyone else know about it tomorrow."
They all accepted that as an answer, and they left Henry's quarter to turn in for the night. They'd need all the sleep they can get to move back to their original location tomorrow. It would come in handy...
AT THE ORIGINAL COMPOUND OF THE M*A*S*H 4077TH - 6:58
It was a brand new morning in South Korea, as the sun was shown rising. At that moment, we are focused on the original 4077th. Suddenly, the jeeps and vehicles that took off from this place yesterday had returned to the front entrance. It seems that things were going to revert to normal for everyone here.
"You know something? It's great to be back home at the ol' four-oh-double-seven." Henry Blake admitted.
"I never thought that I'd be happy to be back in this dump again," Trapper retorted.
"Sometimes, you never know what you had until it's gone," Hawkeye snorted. "That being said, I'm surprised that we were forced to move back so soon."
"Hmph," Frank scoffed. "I'm not the least bit surprised by this."
"I am," Klinger remarked simply. "I'm just glad to be back here where we belong."
"Thank God for allowing us to be brought back here. Bless your soul," Father Mulcahy prayed.
"Easy Pokey. There we go. Yes, Pokey. We're home. Where we belong," Radar comforted the pet goat who started bleating again. "Yes. That's it. Good boy. We're okay. I promise."
"You know something? I kinda miss this place too," Andrew sighed. "It's got so many problems, but I guess I can't complain about it too much. I'm well adjusted to this place by now. I'm used to a lot of the stuff that goes on."
"And you have me to thank for that darling," Margaret purred, putting her hands onto his shoulder.
"I sure do, my dear," Andrew smirked lustily. "I love you, Margaret."
"I love you too, Andrew," Margaret gave him the same lusty expression. "I'm glad that I'm with you, honey."
"Me too buttercup," Andrew said in admiration.
"Welp, now that we're back, let's set the 4077th back to how it was before we bugged out," Henry suggested.
No one objected to that, as the jeeps and vehicle drove into the compound in a single file line. It would take several hours to set the camp back to the way it should be, but it would be worth being back to where it should be. This was the M*A*S*H 4077, and it should be kept that way, meaning it should stay in this area for what it's worth.
The 4077th was considered to be home to some of the personnel stationed there. There was no denying that in the slightest...
END OF CHAPTER 43...
Yup. That's it for this chapter. I do hope you all enjoyed this one too.
I don't have much to say about this chapter, aside from taking some influence from the Season 5 episode 'Bug Out'. This chapter showed the Chinese not invading their perimeter like it was revealed shows how some people can be incompetent in how they handle things. It's mainly a satirical approach to it is all. I hope you all understand that.
Anyway, the next chapter will focus on the issues with gambling at the 4077th, especially since poker is a mainstay there. However, it's not going to be an 'I learned a heartfelt lesson' kind of chapter. Rather, it'll be a satirical overview about the problems gambling comes with and done in a style that isn't out of place for M*A*S*H.
With that said, how will things go with the gambling problem? Find out, next time readers!
For now, only if you want, you can leave a review for this chapter. I don't have a problem with any kind of review really since we're late into the story.
Otherwise, that's all I have for now. So until next time, I do hope you all take care of yourselves. And on that note, thanks again for reading everyone!
