Fate, many believe it is the driving force in life. Every small action one takes or does not take can lead them to the greatest thing in their lives. Even a moment of one's laziness can change another's destiny.

A young blue hedgehog found himself on west-island, relaxing under his biplane. The sun was up high and burning bright, giving Sonic a reason to be lazy. He gave a small stretch of his body before letting his eyelids close. He was about to slip into slumber when a loud crash came from Knothole Village, a small forest settlement nearby. Without a second to waste Sonic was up on to his feet and off to find the source of the commotion. In no time he found his way into the settlement and saw a pile of wood that looks like they were crates at one point and a group of young mobian teenagers laughing and pointing at the pile.

"That is what you get for not looking where you are going, Tails!"

"Did you have a nice fall, Tails?"

"Freak doesn't even know how to use his tails to stay up straight."

Within the pile he saw two tails sticking out, wiggling around franticly. Sonic kicked himself into high gear and started to clear the debris out to get to both villagers. To his shock, he found a fox pup with two tails, and the little one didn't look too well. He pivoted on his feet to glare at the teenagers and onlookers alike.

"This is how you treat kids in this town?" He yells out. His only response was smirks and shakes of heads. No one seemed to care about what did happen. "For shame on you all. I thought West Islanders were better than Robotnik but you all seem to be the same."

That got a response from some of them, but still, he could see they were not going to say sorry or help the pup at all. He turns around to help the pup up only to find the child gone. He spins around and just spots the two tail fox slip behind a house. He follows after quickly, coming up on the fox leaning against the building.

"Hey," Sonic said softly. "You alright?"

The fox slowly turns to look at Sonic. Sonic saw right away that the fox was male, beat up, and very depressed looking. What really hit him in his soul was the way the pup just turns away from him and trudges along down the path.

"Hey, buddy. Where you going?" Sonic asks as he zooms up behind the pup.

"Away." The fox replies. "Maybe a cliff to jump."

"A wha?! Wait a moment there kid!" Sonic pulls the fox around and looks him in the eyes while holding his face with his paws. "I will not take any of that thought process right there. You hear me?" Sonic rubs the kid's fur under his eye. "Not sure the full history you have here but trust me, there are way cooler mobians out there that will like you. Come with me kid and I promise your life will be way past cool with me." He pulls away from the pup and smiles down at him.

"I-i..." The fox looks up at him, a small spark of hope glitters in his eyes. "I guess. Do you really mean it?" He sniffs as he rubs his arm across his nose. "I mean can I really leave this island?"

"Of course you can! I got my Tornado right in that field over there. A quick flight and we are away from this island. Name is Sonic." Sonic says as he holds out his hand, but the fox doesn't take it. Instead Sonic finds the fox against his chest, holding on to him as his life depended on it. "Okay buddy, everything is going to be fine. Your name Tails right?"

"No..." The fox sniffs into Sonics chest, "that is what they call me. I hate it." He pulls his head back and looks up at Sonic. "Miles Prower in my name."

"You know what, I think Tails is a cool name. You should keep it and one day these dunderheads are going to feel really stupid for what they did to you." Sonic smiles give the fox a thumbs up. "Trust me, kid, hanging with me is going to make you just as big as me. But you decide on the name or not while we fly back." Sonic says as he leads Miles out of the settlement.

But what if Fate steps in and changes the course of one's actions. Shifting it so our blue hero never heard the commotion in town. Fate saw a different path for the young fox...

Miles, a two-tailed fox pup, edges out from behind the building and scouted the area. He saw the bakery nearby with fresh produce on display, his stomach making a demand for the food. He starts his advance on the target, making a beeline to the crates to hide behind. All of a sudden he had the urge to look to his right and there he saw three teenagers near the crates hiding behind some bushes, snickering while watching him. Once they notice he saw them they came towards him.

"Well well well, what do we have here," said a blue wolf.

A grizzly bear and a white rabbit chuckle as they all look at Tails.

"Hi, Carrotia, Falke, Bearenger. Can we please not..." Miles tries to plea before the grizzly sends a punch into his chest.

"Oh look.." Said Falke as he whips his tail behind him in excitement. "You made Bearenger upset, I mean you did foil his plan of tripping you. I guess we should have hidden better." The wolf walks up to the wheezing fox. "But that won't stop us from having some fun eh Tails?"

The wolf's knee rushes up and makes contact with Miles' nose, sending the fox tumbling backward. Before Miles could recover the rabbit leaps forward and slams into his chest, forcing his back to hit the ground again.

"Useless little baby Tails." Carrotia says softly as she leans very close to the fox. "Is the little orphan going to cry?" She nearly bumps her nose with his. "Come on little useless foxy. Can you handle a girl?" She shifts her head ever so slightly so she can whisper into his ear. "You know what they say about us rabbits right?" With a quick movement of her body, she moves out of the way of Bearenger's fist. "We are fast."

"Ha! I thought you were going..." Falke starts to say.

"Fast Wolfie! Rabbits are fast!" Carrotia glares at her friend while Bearenger pounds into the fox with blow after blow.

"Sure," the wolf smiles at her. "Whatever you say Carrotia." He leans over to Bearenger and taps him on the shoulder. "Come, I am starving."

Bearenger looks down at the bloody mess he made of the fox before standing up. "Orphan freak should leave." He growls at Miles before the three teenagers head off.

Not a soul checked in on the fox as he lays there. Miles just lays there, looking up at the sky with one eye as the other was swollen shut. He watches as a biplane flies overhead, sending its shadow over his body. It wasn't until nightfall that Miles got to his feet and stumbled out of the village, trailing blood as he went.

"Why do I even try..." he mumbles to himself. He feels very light headed and swore he kept seeing the trees get up and dance around him. Soon he really couldn't think straight or walk straight.

He makes it out of town just as the full moon reaches its highest point in the sky. Miles looks up at it to see another vehicle in the sky. This one was a weird shape because it had no wings. It looks like a large egg to him. He falls back onto his rear as he follows the flying egg over his head. Then the egg descends towards him, getting bigger and bigger.

Soon the egg landed near him and he could see the top half of the egg has a see-through covering while the bottom half was metal. He also made out two figures in the top half of the egg moving around. Soon the top half opens up and the smaller of the two figures jumps out and heads right up to Miles.

"Oh my, Sir." The little man says as he turns to look back at the egg. "It looks alive but just barely." The man looks back at Miles. "Oh, but it has two tails! How interesting."

"Is it worthy for our use?" Came a deep voice from the egg thing.

Miles was having a hard time breathing now as he squints at the man in front of him. He opens his mouth to say something but only blood came out, flowing over his lip and down his furred chest.

"Maybe...hmmm" Miles feels his head lift up ever so slightly as the man leans in. "Yes, I think we could use it for experiment 626. He is old enough for the implants and young enough for the chemical solution. But we best hurry Sir, he doesn't look like he will make it." He looks away from Miles. "Best subject to date for it so maybe we shouldn't start our next attack?"

"What did I say about who decides what Snively?" The egg voice says back. Miles is having issues with the egg talking, even more issues with staying awake too. "Hmmm...626 hasn't had any luck, you are right. If it does work out, not even that blue devil will have a chance. Grab it and let's go!" And that was the last thing Miles heard before he slips off into the darkness.

Fate is a fickle thing, you never know where it will take you. What will Fate have in store for Sonic and Miles now?

A/N: So some sidenotes for those brave enough to read my weirdness. I will be using elements from most of the games and comics but not the shows. At some point, my story should line up with the current comic run but that is far into the future. I know there is no canon on how Tails and Sonic meet up since it seems to change slightly from comic to comic and game to game. So I took some of this and that and...yeah. Leave feedback or hit the 'follow' gets me moving on writing more.
