Okay, so I had this idea for a while. I had originally hoped that someone else would take it and try and make it work. But a friend kind of pushed me to try and do it myself.
Kirbymonster784... Thank you for giving me that extra push.
So now, I present another new tale. A tale inspired by a book series called Halo (not related to that video game) by Alexandra Adornetto. Now before we begin, there will be some religious and spiritual elements in play. So, please forgive me if that is not your cup of tea.
With out further adieu... Let's start.
Chapter 1
[Lori's P.O.V.]
Warmth
I felt the gentle sensation of warm sunlight against my face. I instantly knew it was time for the day to begin and for me to awaken. Yet, as I tried to rouse myself from slumber, I literally felt sluggish and groggy. I couldn't help but groan as I pulled myself out of my bed. The carpet of my bedroom still felt weird against my feet. If there was one thing I wasn't fond of about, it was having a mortal body. I looked across the room and saw my sister Leni still blissfully sleeping in her own bed.
Bless her heart.
"Leni. It's morning." I informed her, hoping she would awaken. Yet, she simply tumbled around in her sleep.
"5 more years." I rolled my eyes at her drowsy refusal. If she hadn't adapted after 2 months, I worry about the rest of my siblings' state of being. Regardless, as the oldest and assigned leader, I had a duty to fulfill. I was sure I had left a golden bell on the vanity in the room. Sure enough, it was still there in all its holy glory. The intricate engravings and the golden wings on the sides helped it stand out with it's color and shine. I walked over and grabbed it in my hand, waving my arm to have the bell create a gentle, yet very distinct chime. The bell's sounds were successful in pulling my sister out of her slumber.
"Morning, already?" Leni yawned as I walked out the door and continued to ring the bell. Throughout the halls of our house, I heard my family wake up in response to the bell. I cleared my throat as I slowed my arm down and the bell became silent.
"Everyone. I need you to get dressed and get ready for the day. You have 45 minutes to do so. After which, there is going to be a family meeting in the dining area." I instructed. Seeing as I was the first out of bed, I figured I might as well get my business in the bathroom finished as soon as possible. As I entered the bathroom, I caught a look at myself in the mirror. My blonde hair was frizzled and askew. I think that mortals referred to it as 'bed head'. I wasn't much for vanity and flaunting my appearance like a trophy.
But I did find it literally annoying. I grabbed a hair brush and vigorously pulled away at my golden locks, putting my hair back into place. Satisfied, I resumed my standard morning routine. My focus never drifted to anything else as I went through the motions with autonomous perfection, as I had done for the last 2 months. The minutes passed with each task I completed.
Shower. Brush teeth. Get dressed. Prepare breakfast for myself and my siblings. Morning Prayer.
Yet, I still felt a sense of anxiety build within me. Today was different, and for good reason. Yesterday, my siblings and I finished our adjustment period to the mortal world. And thus, we were going to officially begin our mission today. As I prayed, like I do every morning, I felt compelled to do things a little bit differently. "Please Lord, protect my sisters and my brother. Give them strength and guide them on our mission. Amen." As I finished my prayer, I heard the footsteps of another one of my siblings come down the steps. Their lavender dress shirt and white skirt shined brightly as they approached.
"Lori."
"Luna." I greeted calmly. My sister took a seat at the table and her gaze immediately fixated on the plate of fried eggs and bacon. She grabbed a fork and nervously poked at them, then lifted a piece of egg white into her mouth. "I can sense that you're nervous. Its okay, Luna." She silently chewed her food while staring at me with an anxiety filling her eyes.
"But this is the first time that I've ever really engaged with mere mortals that haven't come to the great beyond. What if I do something wrong?"
"Just act natural, blend in with them, and stick to your role." I reassured her. "You are not the only one dealing with stress over our assignment." Just as I had finished comforting the third eldest of our family, I felt the wind sweep up above my head with a sudden gust. Looking up, I saw Lola dressed in her preferred princess dress. Her snow white wings outstretched as she flew over the table before gently descending into a chair. I couldn't help but give her an icy glare. Lola then looked up at us with a confused expression. As if she had literally no idea what she had done wrong.
"What?"
"Lola, you know that we are not allowed to fly without permission, or unless it is absolutely necessary." I reminded her. Lola crossed her arms and scoffed at me.
"But we are in the house, not outside with the humans. Isn't our wings and halos what set angels like us apart from humans like them?" She countered with small hints of snarky arrogance. Through sheer impulse, I growled at her.
"She does have a point, sister." Luna spoke up and came to Lola's aide. "We are in the safety of the house. In a private residence like this, we should be free to do as we please." Though my sister made a fair point, I shook my head and remained undeterred.
"What truly sets us apart from mortals is our character. Our way of thinking. Our purity and resolve. And we are not completely safe within these walls." I lectured as I began to point to a window behind me. "Just as the eyes are the windows to one's soul, these windows allow people to gaze upon us freely. We must look and act like the humans we were assigned to live amongst. Especially if we are required to invite a guest over. Do you two understand?" I asked in a firm voice. Thankfully, my sisters looked down and nodded. Fully realizing the folly they made.
"I wish I could still fly." Hearing a very young and innocent voice, we turned to see our only brother, Lincoln. As well as Lily, physically the youngest of us all, in his arms. "It's kind of difficult being a small cherub that isn't allowed to use their wings." Lily complained as Lincoln carried her over to a high chair.
"Don't worry, sister. Once our duty here is done and we return to the heavens, you can fly all you want." Our brother reassured. I was rather proud to see Lincoln so supportive and positive to Lily. Throughout all of our existence, he was always the one that displayed the most self sacrifice. "Besides, taking the form of a baby has some perks." Lily pondered that last statement and tapped her chin.
"I guess you're right. Most humans really like cute things." The young cherub then began to use her children's silverware to some baby food I had prepared for her. As we ate, the rest of our sisters entered the room one after the other and began to eat our morning meal. I lifted another piece of bacon towards my mouth, but stopped as I felt there was something wrong. My eyes scanned the table to take a head count of my family from oldest to youngest. Leni, Luna, Luan, Lynn, Lincoln, Lana, Lola, Lisa, and Lily. Then, I realized what was wrong.
"Lucy. You're late for breakfast and the morning meeting."
"Apologies." I turned my head to see Lucy standing in the corridor separating the dining room from the living room. Unlike the others, I didn't scream. But I did jump a little from her sudden appearance. It doesn't help that her black hair covering her eyes and her dark choices in clothing for her human disguise ran very contrary to our true origins and nature.
"Just go take a seat, sister." I instructed as I pointed to an empty chair. Lucy nodded and walked over to take her seat. With all of my sisters and brother in the room, I cleared my throat and got their attention. "Alright, as you are all remember, we were selected among our fellow Agents of Order to come to Earth with a single mission: Save humanity." I began. My family nodded in response and let out various statements of agreement. Lynn in particular pounded the table with her fist.
"Yeah! Those demons aren't going to get away with any sort of scheme with us on watch." She proclaimed with an extraordinary amount of passion. I couldn't help but smirk in the face of Lynn's boast. Especially since she is a very powerful warrior with the strength and skill to back up any claim.
"Yes. Though it is worth noting that they are not the only ones at fault. Humans are just naturally flawed." Lisa added.
"They went so far away from the light, they're totally in the dark about." Luan joked before breaking into laughter. We all remained silent as we waited for her to finish.
"Thank you, Luan. Your humor is a great way to lift our spirits." My praise made my little sister smile with pure joy. As everyone finally quieted down, I continued the meeting as normal. "Now, we have been given this past summer season to adjust and conform to human way of life in this town of Royal Woods. As well as make 'friends' to divert suspicion." I made air quotes on the word 'friends', and for good reason. We could not afford to make connections with the humans. Best case scenario: We would depart back for Heaven when our mission was complete, so relationships would be pointless to make now. Worst case: They would interfere with our duties. Either way, it is best to distance ourselves.
"But now, our time to adjust has expired. Now, we must begin our attempts to guide humanity back down the right path." I pushed out my chair and stood up. I walked down towards the three oldest of my siblings and stood behind them. "Leni, Luna, Luan. You three will be at the local high school that you have been enrolled in. There, you will keep watch for demons while trying to inspire and cultivate kindness in the humans' souls." My sisters nodded in response. "Lynn, you will do the same at the local middle school. Lincoln, you will take Lucy and Lola to cover the elementary school. Lola, you in particular will be responsible for distributing proper karma and retribution amongst them all." I instructed. I was expecting my orders to raise some confusion amongst everyone.
Sure enough, I was correct. "Wait, what about the rest of us?" Lana asked.
"You are in charge of the town's local flora and fauna. The elementary school's staff has been told you are sick and will arrive to class a day late. You will use today to observe and make note of the wildlife and its condition." Lana's face immediately began to beam with delight. No surprise there, she always had a fondness for animals and nature. "Lisa, your intellect and status of what humans refer to as 'a prodigy child' as allowed you to work some of society's greatest minds. As such, you will guide them in the developments of science and technology." I paused as I felt a sense of unease and disgust. "Of course, you will also have to halt any projects and attempts that may cross the line. The last thing we want is humans trying to play God." Lisa nodded solemnly. I then turned to the youngest of us all. "Lily, you shall be with me. Pretending to be an average human baby as we patrol the town." Lily gave an 'OK' sign with her hand.
I nodded my head in satisfaction. Of course, there was still one important thing I needed to take care of. I walked over to the front door of the house and stopped in front of a small brown end table with a blue vase on top of it. The table had a drawer that I pulled open to reveal an assortment of 10 black and gold ball point retractable pens and a lavender colored baby rattle with a yellow button on it. I grabbed them all and distributed them all amongst myself and my siblings, making sure Lily got the rattle. "Before I forget and those of us going to the schools grab the necessary supplies, I want everyone to test their weapons." With that, my siblings and I clicked the buttons on the items in our hands. At first, nothing happened except for the pens extending out.
Then, we all rapidly clicked the buttons twice. Instantly, they all turned into double edged daggers. The handles were a shinning gold with a small blue sapphire embedded in them. The blades themselves were a made from blessed and holy silver. "Alright, they seem to be fine." We all pressed on the jewels and the daggers reverted back to their prior forms. "Remember, these are to be used discretely. Literally the only times they should be used is when trying to exterminate a demon in secret or to defend yourself as an absolute last resort. Now, those of you going to school, meet me and Lily in the van outside in 3 minutes with your supplies ready. Meeting adjourned." With that, my younger siblings began to walk out of the dining room to fulfill their duties.
I was about to help Lily out of the high chair, but was stopped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Lori." I turned and saw Luna, looking rather nervous. "Are⦠Are you sure we're ready?" I responded to her fear with a comforting hug.
"Fret not, Sister. Have faith in yourself, your music, and the light that guides you." I could instantly see Luna reassured by my words as she smiled and nodded. I then took Lily into my arms and began to walk out towards the van. Yet, despite my outward attitude, I honestly felt uneasy. I don't know why though.
Regardless, I prayed for their safety.
Yup, The Louds are angels in this AU. Now, I will continue eventually one way or another. But the rate of new chapters will depend on reception. So be sure to let me know if you want more of this sooner or more of another of my stories.
Ta ta for now. Have a wonderful day.
