Timeline: As usual, it takes place after Dholov14's Recordatus Caritate. This one sho doesn't continue after Recordatus Caritate, I just wanted Michael to be alive and them living in the mansion.
Note: My mind went dark and twisty, resulting in this one shot. Just a friendly warning, Selene's character is different from the movies as a result of the dark and twisty.
Disclaimer: (Unfortunately) I do not own Underworld or any of the characters. New characters and the story idea are mine :)
Worried whispers filled her mind before she could even open her eyes. Part of her mind recognized the voices, but a voice inside told her it wasn't real. Her mind had played tricks on her before.
'She's waking up.' An all too familiar voice said.
As the room immediately turned quiet, Selene dared to open her eyes. She recognized the infirmary and suppressed a sigh of relief. Michael looked at her with worry in his eyes and she couldn't help but smile at him even though he might not be real. She tried to move her hand to his face, only to discover it was tied.
Panic washed over her when she looked at the restrains binding her hands to the bed. Selene started trashing against the restrains to get free. She heard her name being called but ignored it, convinced that the people around her were just a cruel trick of her mind.
After just a few seconds, her weakened body was too tired to fight anymore. Selene fell back into the pillow. Michael placed his hands on either side of her face and gently forced her to look at him.
'Sweetheart, you are home.' He placed a kiss on her forehead. 'You can stop fighting.'
Silent tears fell down her cheek as she finally realized she was safe. The people around moved away to give them privacy, but Selene could only look at the man she loved. He moved to release her from her restrains and lay beside her. She fell asleep soon after.
Michael was glad she was with him again. Five days they had been looking for her. He vividly remembered being paralyzed when he saw her in that cell. Selene had barely been conscious and had moved to the corner with the last of her energy when the door opened.
Connar, his second in command in the infirmary, had immediately taken over while he just stood there nailed to the ground. Selene looked mentally beaten, but he just couldn't avert his eyes. His heart had broken seeing her like that.
Eventually, David managed to drag him away into a car and off to the mansion. Michael hadn't been allowed to see her until Connar was finished with his work up. Michael had been pacing the room, grunting at everyone who tried to calm him down. Eve was the only one who he would allow to come near.
Michael was woken from his thoughts when he felt Selene stir next to him. She had a frown on her face and looked like she was in pain. He placed his hand on her cheek and the muscles in her face relaxed. Selene moved further on his chest, probably feeling safe for the first time in days.
For the next hour he just lay there, hugging his love and making sure she was ok. The moment she opened her eyes again, he was relieved to see softness instead of the fear he had seen before. She raised her arm to put her hand on the side of his face when she noticed the bandage and shot him a questioning look.
'You woke up a few times and ripped out your IV. Connar thought the bandage would help to keep you from ripping out your IV, but it didn't.' Michael gave her an apologetic look.
'Which explains the restrains.' Selene sighed.
'We had no choice.'
'It's ok.'
'What happened out there?' Michael whispered. Immediately Selene tensed up and avoided his eyes. Michael regretted the question, not wanting to hurt her even more.
'How are you feeling Selene?' Connar asked. He had probably been listening in on their conversation, saving Michael from the silence.
'Tired.' Selene said without looking at either of them.
'Michael, do you mind stepping out? I want to examine Selene.' Connar said with a stern expression giving away that there would be no argument.
Michael kissed Selene's forehead before he moved out of the bed. 'I will see you in a while.'
Selene gave him a small smile and watched him walk out of the infirmary. She slowly turned to Connar, knowing this was going to hurt.
'I know you don't want to do this, but I have to ask. Do you remember what happened?' Connar started in a gentle voice.
Flashes of the previous days flashed before her eyes before she could build up her defenses. Connar noticed and put a comforting hand on her arm. She nodded at his question, not trusting her own voice.
'You have to say it, I'm sorry.'
'I… can't.' Selene turned away from Connar. She was not ready to face everything yet.
She heard his retreating footsteps and the door of his office closing. Tears started to stream down her face while staring at the wall.
Over the next hour, Connar tried again four times but got the same response. He knew the gentle treatment wouldn't work on Selene and decided to be a bit more aggressive. Without saying a word, he walked up to the bed and started removing the bandage.
She looked at him with a questioning look and still refused to talk. He finished removing the bandage and removed the needle of her IV as well. The wound closed right away and Connar knew at least her body was already recovering.
'Here, drink this.' Connar said as he put a bag of blood in her hands.
It had de desired effect. Selene looked at the bag and tossed it in front of her. Connar didn't want to hurt her, but he needed to provoke a reaction. 'Talk to me.'
Selene ignored him and kept staring at the bag.
'You know it is safe.' Connar tried.
Selene looked up with horror on her face. 'What? How?'
'There was footage of what happened to you. They recorded everything and in order to help you, I watched.' Connar slowly started. 'I know what happened, but you need to tell me in your own words.'
Fear was written all over her face and she was clearly looking for words. 'Did… Did Michael see?'
'Nobody but me has seen the video.' Connar reassured her. 'The guards have been instructed to refuse entrance to everyone. Take the time you need.'
Over the next two hours Selene told everything she went through. Even though Connar had seen the footage, he couldn't help but be shocked from time to time. The moment she finished, Selene was exhausted and drifted back to sleep. Connar reconnected her IV and started on his report. He too was tired and needed some blood.
'Guard.' Connar called. 'Find Michael and send him here.'
The guard nodded and walked off. Five minutes later he came back with Michael following him.
'How is she?' Michael was anxious to see her again. It had been hours since Connar had send him away.
'Asleep. She has been through hell but will be fine in time. Go be with her, she will need you.'
'What the hell happened to her?' Michael exclaimed.
'You know I cannot tell you that. I wish I could.' Connar answered. 'Just give her time, she will open up eventually.'
Michael wasn't so sure but didn't respond. He went to Selene and noticed Connar had replaced her IV. She didn't even move when he climbed in bed with her.
Selene was discharged from the infirmary a few days later, although Michael had no idea why Connar kept her so long. She still hadn't talked about what happened to her. Connar had promised him she would in time and made him promise not to force the issue.
'Come join me, Eve and David for dinner.' Michael suggested.
'Let me take a shower and change. I will be right back.'
'Sure, no problem.' Michael said and put a kiss on her cheek. 'I will be right here.'
Michael looked at her go into the bedroom and sat down. Selene had changed. Something they did to her, made her different. Something inside him told him she had never been on the receiving end of torture.
After Selene finished, they headed to the rest for dinner. As soon as they entered, the room grew quiet and they all stared at her.
'I am fine. So please stop staring.' Selene immediately said, playing as if nothing was wrong. 'David, did you burn down the coven in my absence?'
'Not yet, but you might not like some of the changes.' David smirked. 'We will discuss in the morning.'
'Started the party without me? Great move making a guy feel left out.' Varga said in mock annoyance while he entered the room.
'You just countered your own argument that something cannot be a party without you there.' Eve laughed.
'And you just countered never listening to me talking.' Varga countered.
Michael was glad he could count of Varga to just keep the conversation about anything other than what happened. He smiled at their bickering and noticed even Selene was enjoying the conversation. She took some hesitant sips of her blood but refused to have a refill.
After that it was life as usual. Selene immersed herself again in coven business and Michael was back in charge of the infirmary. Michael couldn't help but feel jealous. Selene was talking to Connar on a daily basis, but Connar assured him every time she would eventually open up.
'Can you give me those reports?' Selene asked without looking away from her screen.
'Do you have time to sit with us for dinner?' Michael asked as he walked over and handed her the papers.
Selene looked up from her screen. 'I am sorry. I have been working too much. Let me finish this one, hand David the reports and I will spend the rest of the day with you and Eve.' Selene said with a smile that barely reached her eyes.
'Let me bring the papers to David and I will ask him to join us.' Michael offered. 'Which ones does he need?'
'These.' Selene pointed to some folders. 'Thank you.'
Michael knocked on David's office door and waited till he could enter. 'Selene wanted you to have these.' Michael said as he handed him the reports.
'I doubt you are just here as an arrand boy.' David said while he looked up from his screen.
'I did have a question for you if you have some time.' Michael hesitated.
'She's doing her job but seems distant at times. Most people don't seem to notice as she never really talked to anybody of the council outside coven business.' David answered his unspoken question. 'How is she around you and Eve?'
'She puts on a smile and acts normal, but she seems absent. Selene is struggling with something. Connar knows and refuses to talk to me.' Michael said with frustration in his voice and started pacing the room. 'How am I supposed to help her when I don't know what is wrong with her. She's there but she's not. Did you notice she looks like a ghost these days? I am not even sure if she feeds enough.'
'What does Connar say?' David tried.
'To be patient.' Michael exclaimed. 'I am watching her become a shell and he says to be patient. How the hell can I be patient David? How?!'
'You might not want to hear this but try calm down and listen to Connar. Everyone responds to trauma differently and we all know Selene is not the type of person to ask for help. Connar will step in if he sees something going wrong. You trust Connar right?'
'Off course I do, but…' Michael was stopped by David raising his hand.
'You trust Selene?' Was David's next question.
'With my life.' Michael sighed.
'Then trust them. You are a healer, you know this stuff.'
'But this is Selene. It's not just another patient or vampire. I cannot do nothing! This is so frustrating.' Michael exclaimed and let himself fall in the chair across from David's desk.
'Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do or say that will help.' David sighed. 'But if you ever need to vent, you are welcome. Do you want me to join you for dinner?'
'Thanks, but you might throw me out when I am here every day.' Michael smiled sadly. 'I'll see you in a bit.'
Michael was glad David offered him to vent when needed. Making Selene open up had taken a lot of effort over the years and it felt like everything they had accomplished was gone. While walking to their chambers, he forced himself to be more positive and give her time, at least today.
'David will be joining… Selene?' Michael called as she wasn't at her desk anymore. He walked to their living area but still no Selene.
After checking the bedroom and bathroom, Michael figured she was called away and went to check her desk for notes. As soon as he walked into her office, he saw a hand on the floor behind her desk and the world froze. Everything seemed to go by in slow motion as he moved to see what he already knew.
Selene lay unconscious behind her desk. Michael moved beside her and checked her vitals. She was alive but unconscious. He checked for wounds and didn't find any.
'Guards!' Michael called. 'Get Connar here now!'
Within a minute, Connar rushed in and repeated the check of her vitals. Michael sat back to give Connar room to work.
'Has she been feeding?' Connar asked.
'I am not sure, but I think not.' Michael sighed as Connar confirmed his suspicions.
Right on time, two vampires came in the room carrying a gurney and they helped Connar get Selene on it. They rushed her out of their chambers. Before Michael could ran after them, Connar placed a hand on his chest, stopping him.
'Take a breath and calm down. After that, inform David and find Eve.' Connar ordered. 'I will see you in half an hour.'
Selene opened her eyes and sighed. This was the second time she woke up to see the infirmary. She looked around and noticed Eve and Michael were in his office together with Connar. As soon as they spot her looking at them, Michael and Eve moved to her side.
'Are you ok?' It was Michael who spoke, but not in his normal loving voice.
'I am. Michael, are you?' She asked.
'Good.'
It was the only word Michael spoke, without a hint of emotion. He turned on his heels and walked away. Selene looked at his retreating back with shock. He had never spoken to her like that. She turned to Eve, but even her daughter had a stern look on her face.
'What is going on?' Selene pleaded.
'How can you do this to yourself?' Eve exclaimed. 'You were the one that taught the both of us the importance of feeding and now you pull this? What has happened to you?'
'I…' But Selene just couldn't answer.
'You have to start talking.' Eve pleaded. 'You can trust me Mom. Please tell me what happened.'
Connar walked back into the infirmary. He had tried to stop Michael from walking away from his mate but failed. Michael had been too angry to reason with. Connar was planning on checking on Selene when he heard her finally opening up to Eve.
He sat down behind the desk and pretended to work while he listened again to Selene's story. He normally didn't listen into conversations, but for this he made an exception. Despite seeing the actual footage and hearing it for the second time, Connar couldn't believe what she had lived through. Selene left out some details to protect Eve. Details she did tell Connar and even he had trouble with processing a few days ago.
It took her an hour to tell the story and Eve sat by her side with tears falling down her face. Every now and then she even gasped and put a hand over her mouth. Selene was quiet during those times, Connar could clearly see the struggle it took to tell the story again.
When Connar heard Selene finish, he took a breath and walked up to the bed. Selene was pale and exhausted, and Eve didn't look any better. He handed Eve some blood to make her feel better.
'Drink, it will do some good. Selene, do you want me to get Michael?' He asked already knowing the answer.
'I… don't know. I…' Selene tried. Sensing her mothers' mood, Eve stood and crawled in bed with her.
'Let me know if you need anything.' Connar said.
He walked back to office and kept a close eye on Eve and Selene. David came by to check up on them and Connar informed him Selene hadn't been feeding enough and had fainted. They both agreed Selene would stay at the infirmary for a day before she could go back to work. Connar had to promise him he would help her with feeding on a daily basis to prevent this from happening again.
Connar caught movement in the corner of his eye. Eve got out of Selene's bed and looked at him to come over. He nodded and walked up to them when he finished his report.
'I have convinced my mother to tell dad what happened.' Eve said with a sad smile. 'But she wants you to tell him.'
'Eve, will you try and find your father?' Connar asked. Eve nodded and went on her way.
'I cannot keep reliving this.' Selene whispered. 'I cannot tell him and see the sad look in his eyes. The guilt…'
'I will tell him, if he lets me. Do you want him to see the footage as well?'
Selene nodded and averted her eyes. Connar set everything up in his office and just finished when Eve dragged her father in. By the look on his face, he was still furious.
'Thank you, Eve, I will take it from here. Michael, please follow me.'
'You seriously send my daughter after me?' Michael started when the door closed. 'And don't tell me to be patient. I am not patient anymore.'
'I need you to do something for me. But before that happens, you need to calm down. So sit down.' Connar said and pointed to the chair across from the desk.
'What do you want from me?' Michael grunted.
'During her captivity, they taped the experiments they performed.' Connar started carefully. 'I have that footage and Selene gave her permission to show it to you.'
'She… Wait, what?!' Michael exclaimed. 'They taped their experiments? What were they thinking?'
'That I cannot answer, but it will help you see what Selene has gone through and understand a few things.' Connar explained. 'But you really need to calm down first.'
Michael stood and started pacing the room while Connar let him process the information. After a few minutes, Michael opened the door and walked to Selene. He gave her a kiss on her forehead and walked back. When he closed the door of the office again, he sighed.
'Are you ready?' Connar asked while standing to let Michael take his seat.
Michael nodded and sat down. Connar started the video and stood behind him. Michael focused on the screen and saw the cell in which they found Selene. Selene was dragged in while she was unconscious and they immediately started to drain most of her blood.
The time frame on the video said it skipped an hour when Selene started to wake up. She looked disoriented and was barely able to lift her head. Not long after, someone opened the door and shoved a blood bag inside. Selene's hunger got the best of her and she devoured the blood.
It wasn't a sight Michael was used to seeing, but the next part shocked his core. A few minutes after she drank, Selene doubled over in pain. She started gasping for breath and clinging to her stomach. Pain was written all over her face before her body started convulsing violently up until the point she vomited and passed out again.
Connar hit pause. Michael couldn't tear his eyes away from the image on the screen. Based on the time frame, this was only hours after they took her and she had been there for days.
'How many times?' Michael whispered.
'Six before she started refusing to feed.' Connar sighed.
'She… refused?' Michael finally looked at Connar.
'There is more if you are ready.'
Michael looked over the screen at Selene. Eve was with her, holding her hand and talking to her in a whisper. Eve locked eyes with him and gave him a sad smile. He looked back at Connar and nodded. Connar selected a new file.
The time in the video was four days after her capture. Selene started to wake up, looking like a shell of her former self. A blood bag was lying next to her, but she ignored it. Connar fast forward an hour and Selene hadn't moved. Someone came in and started ordering Selene to drink. She kept refusing, even when they smacked her in her face.
When hurting her didn't work, a second person came in and they started forcing the blood down. Selene tried but was too weak to fight them off. They managed to make her drink the blood and her body started convulsing immediately.
This time, Michael hit pause. He needed a minute. It was finally dawning on him why she couldn't say anything. Just seeing it was already too much, let alone living it. Michael put his head in his hands, feeling guilty he tried to push her and Connar in opening up. Connar placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed in understanding.
'Selene told me they didn't always spike her blood. They needed her to keep up some strength to withstand the toxins. Just not enough to try and escape.' Connar explained. 'As she didn't know if the blood she got was safe or not, she refused to drink altogether. Selene is struggling with that and doesn't trust the blood that is handed to her. It will take a long time before she trusts that again.'
'Eve… Does…'
'Selene told Eve before she came looking for you. I must warn you, Selene did not tell her everything. She protected Eve by only telling the first time it happened. Eve does not know about the footage or how often it happened or the extend of pain she went through. Although I suspect she understands it wasn't a one-time thing.' Connar said. 'You need to give her time. The only way you can help is being with her.'
'Yeah.' Michael finally said.
Michael stood and walked out of the office. As soon as he neared Selene, she tensed up. She refused to look at him, but Michael didn't mind. Eve tried to sense his mood by looking at him. Michael got into bed behind Selene and hugged her tightly. After a few seconds, Selene started to relax in his arms.
He kissed her head and whispered a promise she would be alright.
