Labor Day
A/N: I am still out of town but this was almost finished on the computer so I put some finishing touches on it as I wanted to get it published before Labor Day. I will be back to working on my other story in a few days until then please enjoy this little 'snapshot.'
"Maur, Labor Day is approaching fast. I purchased our tickets for the 'Labor Day Fireworks Cruise on Northern Lights.' Tommy, TJ and Ma will meet us here at the house so we can ride over together. Does that sound good to you?" Jane asked as Maura was in the kitchen getting their dinner ready.
Maura turned towards Jane and replied, "Yes, love that sounds great. I'm looking forward to the cruise on the harbor. I have never taken a cruise of the harbor."
"Really, not even when you were a small child?" Jane questioned as she walked towards the kitchen.
"No, that is not really something that my parents would do so I never did it. I told you there will be quite a few things that you have done and I haven't. I love that you are doing them with me." Maura answered as she put the foil over their dinner and then put it in the oven and set the timer.
Jane walked up to her and wrapped her arms around her from behind and hugged her just as Maura closed the oven door. Jane said, "I love doing things with you, and for you Maur. I love you so much."
Maura turned and kissed Jane and said, "I love you, Jane. What is the weather supposed to be that night? It's on Thursday Night and not on Labor Day, correct?"
"The weather should be nice. Yes, the cruise is on Thursday night, so we will celebrate Labor Day Thursday through Monday." Jane answered as she turned Maura around so her body fully faced her and continued to kiss her.
"As long as we don't get called into work that is." Maura said as she walked Jane over to the couch. Jane was walking backwards and still trying to land kisses on Maura.
"Don't jinx it Maur!" Jane exclaimed as she stopped moving to look at Maura.
"I wasn't trying to jinx it, but simply stating a fact, love." Maura said as she broke their embrace and grabbed Jane's hand and guided her to the couch.
"Well keep that thought out of your mind. I would love a long weekend with no murders." Jane said as Maura pushed her down on the couch.
"Me too, I love having several days in row off with you." Maura replied as she climbed on top of Jane's lap.
"There are lots of things we can do. The only times we are meeting with family is Thursday night and then Sunday for dinner. The rest of the weekend is ours to do as we please." Jane said as they continued kissing each other.
"Well like you said there are lots of things we can do together, we are still on our honeymoon year." Maura said as she tugged on the bottom on Jane's shirt so she could lift it up over her head. Jane complied and assisted Maura in taking off her shirt and then she unzipped Maura's dress. Maura rose and let the dress dropped off of her body. Jane motioned for her to remove her slip. When Maura complied Jane said, "don't stop there you are still over-dressed woman."
"Jane, dinner will be done in about 20 minutes." Maura said as she stopped removing the rest of her clothes as Jane had requested.
Jane asked, "You have the timer set right?"
"Of course, I learned from last time this happened. I don't want to burn anymore meals." Maura said.
Jane laughed at how serious Maura was being and said, "Well, I must say it was worth burning dinner that night, if I do say so myself."
"I agree it was definitely worth it, but we should try hard not to burn our meals." Maura replied. They made out until the timer went off. Jane sighed heavy when the timer went off and said, "I want more time. That was a quick twenty minutes."
Maura answered her by saying, "let's eat and then we can finish upstairs and you can have as much time with me as you want." With that Jane smiled and got up off the couch and escorted her wife to the kitchen.
They ate their dinner still semi-undressed and then quickly rinsed off the dishes and continued what they had started before dinner once they got to their bedroom.
Thursday Night Jane, Maura, Tommy, TJ and Angela left the house at 6 PM so they would be sure to be at the designated meeting point for the harbor cruise. They stopped at the ticket booth to get their boarding passes and boarded the 'Northern Lights.'
The yacht pulled out from the port promptly at 7 PM. The 'Northern Lights' was a 1920s style 115-foot commuter yacht that had an open top deck and a window enclosed lower deck. It carried up to 149 passengers and crew. The yacht cruised around the harbor giving the passengers an up-close view of the beautiful Boston Skyline and the colorfully lit up waterfront buildings. Towards the end of the two-hour cruise, they had a great view of the fireworks overhead.
TJ loved the cruise. He thought it was wonderful to be cruising around and watching the fireworks at the same time. He moved between the four adults telling each of the about what he was seeing. He asked Jane if she could put him up on her shoulders and she did. She loved her nephew and would do almost anything for him.
Maura had a big smile on her face looking at her wife with TJ. She loved Jane so much and wanted to have a family with her. They had decided that they wanted children. They were just going to wait until after their one-year wedding anniversary to discuss it in detail. Maura was doing all of her research about IVF so she would be prepared for this talk. She was determined to have this talk the day after their first anniversary and not a day later. She wanted to be pregnant by this time next year. What they still needed to figure out was how many kids they wanted. She was taken out of her thoughts of future children by TJ asking her a question.
"Aunt Maura, can you tell me the history of fireworks? Aunt Jane said you know all about them." Maura was so wrapped up in her thoughts she had missed that Jane and TJ were having a conversation about fireworks and had asked the question and Maura didn't respond so Jane had bumped her to get her attention.
"Sure TJ. The Chinese developed fireworks somewhere between 920 and 1200 AD. They felt the use of sound and colors would ward off evil spirits. The display is seen as a sign of happiness." Maura told the very enthusiastic TJ who was still on top of Jane's shoulders.
TJ then asked, "What is Labor Day?"
"Labor Day is a day set aside to honor American workers. Labor means to work. Labor Day was design to honor workers and give them a day off between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. It became a National Holiday on June 28, 1894 when Congress set aside the first Monday in September as a National Holiday." Maura explained.
"You really are a walking 'googlemouth' as Aunt Jane says. I love all the things you know. You are so smart Aunt Maura. I want to know lots of things like you do." TJ said as he motioned for Jane to put him down. When Jane put him down, he gave Maura a great big hug. "I love you so much."
Maura had tears coming down her face as she replied, "I love you too TJ. Thank you." Maura picked up TJ and continued to hug him. Jane wiped the tears away and hugged them both as she gave Maura a tender kiss.
When the cruise was over and the yacht docked back at the pier they disembarked and walked back to their car. TJ was back on Jane's shoulders. Maura had her arm wrapped through Jane's arm. Angela and Tommy walked behind them. Angela wondered how long before one of them would be pregnant and give her additional grandbabies. She asked Tommy, "which one do you think is going to carry my future grandbabies?" Tommy just laughed and said, "Maura for sure." Angela wrapped her arm in Tommy's and they just followed Jane, Maura and TJ. Angela had the biggest smile on her face knowing that it would happen. Jane and Maura would have children in the future. They were both so great with children and they had so much love to share.
Sunday the extended family gathered for dinner. Angela had come over early to start cooking. Maura had been right by her side the entire time helping her. They worked great together and Angela loved having her daughter-in-law in the kitchen helping her and learning all the family recipes. Angela had always hoped that Jane would take an interest in cooking but she never did. Jane cooked but not with her mother. Maura knew that Jane just didn't want to be trapped in the kitchen with her mother. At family dinners Jane was always out watching TV with her brothers while her mother cooked. She would help with the food preparation but never stay in the kitchen for the whole meal.
When Tommy and TJ arrived. TJ went into the kitchen to say hello to his Nonna and Aunt Maura. He was fascinated by what they were doing. He stayed in the kitchen and helped his Aunt Maura. When Tommy entered the living room without TJ Jane was wondering why TJ had not come out and said hello to her. She got up to see what had stalled her nephew from coming out and saying hi to her. She saw TJ so engrossed in what Maura was teaching him, she just simply stood there and watched her wife interact with TJ. TJ was like a sponge just soaking up everything Maura was saying. Maura had such a smile on her face as did TJ. She didn't want to interrupt. Angela saw Jane admiring her wife and TJ and walked over and said, "She really is great with children, isn't she?" Jane looked at her ma and then at Maura and said, "Yes, she is."
Jane walked over and snuggled up to wife embracing her in a hug from behind. Maura's smile grew as Jane kissed the top of her head and whispered 'I love you' into her ear. Maura turned slightly so she could kiss Jane. Maura asked, "would you like to help?" Jane shook her head 'no' and simply continued to whisper in her ear, "I like watching you prep the food and teaching TJ. You really are great with kids. How about we not wait until our one-year anniversary, let's make an appointment to talk with the doctor about IVF. I want to have children with you. I want to have a family with you."
"Oh Jane, that is great. I will call tomorrow." Maura said as she turned completely around so she was face-to-face with Jane and kissed her." Angela said, "Girls!" Jane and Maura stopped kissing and looked at her. She continued, "I think we need to finish our dinner prep and then you can continue your little make out session outside the kitchen." Jane and Maura just looked at each other and smiled and went back to prepping for dinner, well Maura did, Jane went back to watching her wife.
They enjoyed a nice meal with family and friends and when everyone left it was just Jane and Maura. They enjoyed their hot tub and making love and falling asleep in each other's arms until the alarm disturbed them on Tuesday morning when it was time to get ready to go to work. They managed to have a 3-day weekend without getting called into a murder. Right then their phones rang and they answered them and rushed off to a crime scene thinking at least they had a nice weekend together. Maura would have to wait until later that day to call and make the appointment with the doctor so they could start their family.
