Chapter One
As I walked down Hollywood Boulevard, I couldn't help but notice all the new sights and sounds around. Rebecca Lynn Roberts is my name. I feel like a lost soul, or so it seems to me. My father had just transferred to the LAPD as the new lieutenant and moved his whole family out to Los Angeles, including his 25 year old daughter, me. I would've much preferred to stay in Miami where I had friends and places to go. I heard the cop car go driving by.
"Miss Roberts?" I heard a female voice say as the car slowed down. I looked over and saw one of the detectives in her cop car.
"Yes?" I said, walking over.
"I was sent to get you by your father. Something about a new job," the cop said. I walked up to the side of the cop car.
"You mean to tell me that my father has detectives babysitting me now? Don't you have something better to do?" I asked.
"Look, I'm just doing my job. My name is Chloe Decker. Want to hop in and we can talk about this back at the precinct? I don't want to be here any more than you do," the detective said. I sighed and got in the passenger seat of the Dodge Charger. I kept quiet the entire way back to the precinct, not wanting to talk about life and such.
When I got back to the precinct, I went straight to my father's office. I was about to open the door when I heard an English accent coming from inside. I cracked the door open because I know that wasn't my father. I saw a tall man in a suit with dark hair and eyes. If looks could kill, I would be dead when my father looked at the door.
"Rebecca, come in here" my father said, standing up from his chair.
"Mr. Morningstar, I appreciate you helping me and I'd love to keep you on as a consultant for the LAPD. I just need to have a discussion with my daughter here about running around Los Angeles with no protection," Jim Roberts said as the guy stood up from his chair. The man turned around and looked as I walked in.
"Hello dear. Your father has a point. This is a dangerous city. You should be wary of the people around you. Never know when you'll meet a devil in the flesh," he said, flashing a bright white smile as he left. I walked over and sat on the couch.
"What was that all about?" I asked, curious of what had just transpired. My dad was not one for keeping secrets and making shady business deals. He had a pretty long career in the Miami Police Department and I can't see him ruining that reputation now.
"Becks, you need to be more careful. I understand you're an adult and can do what you want, but this city is nothing like Miami. There are tons of bad people here. Which is why I had a talk with Mr. Morningstar about you. He owns a nightclub and I feel like I can trust him to keep an eye on you. You want to live on the edge, well now you get your chance. Mr. Morningstar is a consultant for the LAPD and works with Detective Decker. He's made a deal with me. You'll be his new bartender, in exchange for keeping an eye on you. Your mother isn't getting any younger, especially after all the chemo she has had in the past two years. Just trust us to behave so we don't have to bury you like we did your sister," he said.
And there it was. Always the guilt trip. My older sister, Candace, had been quite the trouble maker in Miami. She hit up the clubs every night and did probably every drug under the sun. It wasn't my fault that she overdosed and I wasn't near as adventurous as her. I just can't stand being at home. My mom had just gone through two years of chemo and finally beat the lung cancer she was diagnosed with. Dad poured himself into his work and Mom's nurse wasn't the nicest to me. So the way I see it, it wasn't my fault that I didn't want to stay at home. I shook my head and stood up.
"So you mean to tell me I have a babysitter at 25 years old?" I asked in disbelief.
"Its not like that Becks and you know it. As a matter of fact, he is still waiting outside the office. So if I were you, I'd get out there and see what your new boss wants you to do," he said, obviously dismissing me. I rolled my eyes and walked out of the office. I saw the guy leaning against the wall.
"You really are a stubborn human, aren't you?" he asked. I rolled my eyes.
"Isn't this like human trafficking or something when you force someone into a job?" I asked.
"While I am a devil of my word, I don't condone any illegal activities of the such. I just need to tell the Detective I'll be seeing her later and we will be on my way," the man said, taking off to the detective that picked me up. I watched as they interacted. Maybe this won't be so bad after all. I won't have my dad breathing down my neck.
"Miss Roberts, are you ready?" the man called out. I sighed and followed him out to the parking garage and to a black 1962 Corvette.
"This is yours?" I asked in disbelief. He nodded and got in, starting the car. I walked around the car, admiring it.
"Are you going to drool over my car or get in?" he asked. I got in and carefully closed the door. We took off through the streets of LA pulling up to a club called Lux. He parked in valet and got out. I followed, curious of where this was going.
