Chapter One Title: I Don't Care

Summary:

When we met, I knew then there was something cool about you

Even though some of my friends didn't notice it at all

You and me, all alone, took a walk and started talking

We stayed out all night counting all the stars

I don't care what they say, I don't care what they do

'Cause they all fade away when it's just me and you

Well it's more than a crush, an impossible rush

I don't care what they say when you're there, I don't care

- "I Don't Care" by Bratz

Barbara never imagined she would be in a relationship with someone, especially her Archon at that, but she treasures every day that she spends with him. However, there are some that don't appear to agree with how close Venti has gotten to Barbara. What will happen to their relationship?

"Venti, I have to work tomorrow... I really can't be out like this."

It was currently late at night, and while Barbara was usually the type to be in bed by a certain time, Venti had somehow managed to drag her outside the walls of Mondstadt. Normally, she wouldn't have allowed him to take her past Windrise, but the bard enchanted her with various songs that by the time she realized where they were, she could see Dawn Winery coming into view. Oh, why did she have to love his voice so much?

"Relax, Barbara. The night is young! Don't worry, I wouldn't bring you all this way for no reason. It seems Master Diluc has a rare vintage wine in his cellar that he has been saving. This particular wine is a gift from him towards our new relationship!" He placed a hand against his chest. "Being the kind bard that I am, I decided to save him the trouble of delivering it."

The blonde stopped in her tracks, placing her hands on her hips.

"This is the first I've heard of this. Master Diluc knows I don't drink, so why would he give wine? If I remember correctly, you have quite the tab at Angel's Share, Venti. Seems pretty odd that he would give you wine for free."

"W-Who knows? I'm surprised myself! But it'd be rude of me- I mean us, to turn down his generosity, wouldn't you agree?"

"Venti, did you bring me here just so you could steal wine?"

She heard a nervous laugh escape his lips, his green eyes looking off to the side as he placed a hand against his neck.

"Steal is such a strong word. I wouldn't say we're stealing per se, more like borrowing...?" He said, flashing her an innocent grin.

A tired sigh escaped Barbara's lips. She knew of the bard's routines of sneaking into Dawn Winery for food, but to think he would bring her along on one of his escapades.

"I won't have any part in this."

As the blonde turned around to begin heading back towards Mondstadt, she felt Venti take hold of her hand. She turned her head towards him, her eyes instantly meeting his green ones.

"I'm sorry for tricking you. You've been busy as of late. We haven't gotten a chance to spend any time together since I returned. Everyone needs a moment to stop and feel the wind, so I decided to take you out here." He slowly released her hand. "I'm not doing this only for the wine. Well...okay, a part of me is, but the other part just wants to be with you."

"Venti..."

It was true that she rarely had any free time due to her duties, and that was one of the main worries she had about their relationship, but Venti never once chastised her. He knew her workload was something outside her control, but he also knew that helping others and bringing smiles to faces was her passion. It was why the blonde's Vision was bestowed upon her after all. Barbara couldn't be mad at him for wanting to take her out for the night. He was the God of Freedom after all. And to be honest, she secretly wasn't in any hurry to leave his side.

A soft sigh escaped the blonde's lips. "Wind help me. I suppose since we've come all this way... B-But just for tonight, okay? I wouldn't want Master Diluc to...Aaaah!"

She felt Venti lift her by her waist, twirling her around in happiness. After what seemed like forever, he gently placed her back down on the ground. As the blonde tried to calm her heart that was beating rapidly from the adrenaline, she felt the bard take hold of her hand again, beginning to make a run towards the mansion.

"It'll be fun! You'll see!"

Barbara doubted that sneaking around one's house uninvited was considered fun, but she couldn't help but smile upon seeing that bright expression of his that she loved so much.

When the two reached the premises, Barbara followed Venti through the vineyards around to the back. Surprisingly, the back of the mansion was unattended, so the two were able to sneak inside rather easily. However, they still had to bypass the maids that were inside. Barbara was sure they would get caught, but Venti knew the right moments to slip by. The blonde almost found it impressive, but mentally reminded herself that they were sneaking around Diluc's house uninvited.

Once inside the wine cellar, she saw the bard dash towards the shelves. Happy giggles escaped his lips as he looked upon the bottles of wine. Barbara stood by the door, keeping lookout while Venti searched through the shelves. Each second that passed instilled her with more anxiety.

"I have a bad feeling about this..."

"Frowning causes wrinkles, you know."

The blonde immediately turned towards the bard, folding her arms against her chest. "Stealing is wrong, Venti. I don't want to imagine what Master Diluc will do if he finds us. I would hate to be on bad terms with him..."

"Don't worry your pretty little head, my darling Deaconess. We'll be as swift as a breeze that no one will even notice we were here! Besides, not all stealing is bad. After all, I stole your heart, didn't I?"

"W-What...?" Barbara could feel the heat rise to her cheeks from the comment. He said it with such confidence, like it was a fact, that the blonde wasn't sure how to respond. "That's...a pretty bold claim. I don't recall ever giving you my heart. T-Therefore, there's no way you could've stolen it."

"Hmm... I seem to remember a certain Deaconess holding me rather tightly on the beach a couple of weeks ago. Said Deaconess was also begging for my return almost every day since my departure. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there's only one Deaconess in Mondstadt. But who knows? Things can change in a year. If you happen to know any other darling deaconesses with a sweet voice, could you bring them to me? It seems my heart got captured by the wrong one."

He gave her a wink, sticking his tongue out playfully at her. Barbara's cheeks felt so hot with embarrassment that if a drop of water fell on her skin, it would probably vaporize on the spot. She clenched her hands, her lips pressing together tightly in frustration.

"You are so...!"

Just then, Barbara heard footsteps approaching the wine cellar. Panicking, she immediately grabbed Venti by the hand and went towards the back, taking cover behind some wine barrels. The bard tried to say something to her, but the blonde shushed him to keep quiet. Her heart thumped nervously inside her chest as she heard the door creak open, hearing a pair of footsteps enter inside. Out of fear, she moved closer to Venti, her chest pressing up against his. A small gasp escaped her lips upon realizing the proximity of their bodies. Embarrassed, the blonde proceeded to move away, but she felt Venti stop her, his hands gently holding her waist. She looked up towards him, confused.

"Venti?"

"Yeah?" he whispered, an innocent smile on his face.

"I... I was going to give you some space. Surely, I must be crushing you..."

"Not at all!" He looked at her with mischievous eyes. "You can move closer if you like~ Feel free to wrap your arms around me too."

The blonde let out a tired sigh. "You are so-"

"Is someone there?" A male voice called out.

Barbara tensed up, immediately covering her mouth with her hand. She heard Venti giggle lightly and shot him an angry glance, forcing him to go quiet.

"Strange... Thought I heard voices. Hmm? Has someone been rummaging through the wine? I didn't see anyone else come in. Then again, it's probably that bard. He's always sneaking into places he doesn't belong. Don't know why Master Diluc is so lenient with him. Now, let's see... The shipment called for this wine. Should be some extra barrels in the back."

Barbara heard the man's footsteps start to get closer and panicked.

Oh no... What do we do? If he finds us, Master Diluc will be furious! But there's nowhere else to hide... Barbara shut her eyes tightly as she clasped her hands together, silently praying. Oh, Lord Barbatos, please forgive me for this transgression! I promise to never ask for another piece of spicy dried fish again!

"Hey, Ernest! Long time no see!"

"...Huh?"

Upon hearing Venti's voice, the blonde opened her eyes and realized that he was no longer with her. She turned around and saw that he had stepped out from behind the barrels. Barbara must've been too caught up in her praying to notice.

"I knew I heard someone down here. Looks like my hunch was correct. Seems you still find a way to get into the wine cellar unnoticed. Master Diluc should consider getting a guard dog," Ernest said, sighing in frustration.

"Come now, there's no need for that! I'm just a harmless bard, who like most, can't resist the taste of delicious wine. It's not my fault Dawn Winery makes the best wine in all of Mondstadt."

"I don't have time to deal with you right now. I have orders that need to be prepared. Unlike you, some of us are working individuals."

"Hey, ballads aren't easy to write, you know! It takes a lot to compose one song and-"

"Yeah, yeah. All right come with me. Until Master Diluc returns, you are not allowed to leave."

"I'll be as still as a leaf without a breeze," Venti replied, a playful smirk spreading across his lips. There's just one thing I have to do. It won't take long."

"Hurry it up. I don't have time to wait around," Ernest commented.

"Of course, my good sir."

Barbara watched as Venti quickly made his way back to her when Ernest wasn't looking. He kept his voice lowered so that they wouldn't be overheard.

"Don't worry, Barbara. I'll create a distraction so you can escape. Just wait for my signal, okay?"

"What about you?" Barbara asked, worried about leaving him behind.

"Heh, I'll be fine. I always manage to slip out of their clutches." He proudly placed a hand against his chest. "They can't hold this bard down. Just wait for me near the road. I'll meet up with you shortly."

The blonde sighed, bringing a hand to her temple. "You know, we could've avoided all of this from the beginning if you hadn't brought me here."

"True, but what's done is done." He simply smiled as he leaned in close towards her ear, his warm breath tickling her skin, sending shivers down her spine. "I wouldn't waste any opportunities to spend with my darling nun."

The idol stood in silence as she watched him head back to Ernest, giggling in satisfaction. She could tell he was relishing her reaction. He always did. Barbara wasn't sure if it was the bard in him, but he just had a way of saying things that would leave her breathless. She could never come up with a remark fast enough or say anything that could get him as flustered as he did her. However, despite the charmer he was, she knew he meant every word. The blonde wished she could one day wipe the smug look off his face, but she could let herself be swayed away by his sweet words for a little longer.

I hope he doesn't do anything too reckless… Barbara thought as she waited patiently for the bard's signal.

Just then, she heard what sounded like playful laughter coupled with female screams and shouting. The idol wasn't sure what was happening but figured that was the signal Venti was talking about and proceeded to exit the wine cellar with haste. None of the staff was around as they were probably preoccupied with whatever ruckus the bard was creating, but for the blonde, it meant slipping out unnoticed, and avoiding being in Diluc's bad books. She headed towards the road they took and waited for the bard near a light. After a couple of minutes of anxious thumb-twiddling, Barbara heard fast footsteps approaching and saw him run-up to her.

"Hey...Barbara…" He greeted, resting his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. Once fully recovered, he flashed her a cheeky grin. "See? I told you I'd be f-"

His words were cut short as Barbara had suddenly hugged him.

"Barbara...?"

"Next time you decide to do something like this, leave me out of it, okay? I was really worried..."

She heard a soft laugh escape his lips as he returned the hug. "Come now, it wasn't all that bad. It was kind of exciting, don't you think? Sneaking around in secret… The thrill of getting caught… Then again, I suppose you wouldn't know fun if it hit you in the nose."

Barbara immediately let go of him, offended by his words. "I... I do too know!"

"Oh yeah?" Venti placed his hands on his hips, giving her a smug look. "Name something fun that you like to do, and it can't be work-related."

"I…" The blonde thought for a moment. "I like singing."

"Singing is technically your job, so it doesn't count."

"Umm...putting a smile on someone's face?"

"Again, that's part of work."

"...Healing people?"

She heard giggles escape from his lips. She could tell he was trying his best not to laugh at her, but eventually, the bard couldn't help himself and began laughing hard.

"All your answers were related to work! You don't know anything outside of being in the church! I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh, but this is too funny!"

Barbara slowly clenched her hands, her eyes beginning to weld up with tears. She knew Venti didn't mean anything bad by his statements. He was most likely teasing her as he always did, but the blonde couldn't help but feel hurt and humiliated. She heard his laughter cease when he took notice of the change in her expression.

"Barbara?"

"So, what if I enjoy my work? Making people happy and easing their pain is important to me. You of all people should know that more than anyone. I guess you wouldn't understand that because you're able to roam around freely without a care in the world. Yes, my work is hard, but it's something only I can do." She clutched her chest, lowering her voice. "Even though she outshines me in everything else, I finally have something of my own..."

"Barbara…"

The idol remembered where they were and started to head in the direction of Mondstadt. She heard the bard follow behind her. The two walked in silence, not saying a word to each other. It continued like that for a while, until Venti eventually spoke up, causing Barbara to stop.

"...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Everyone has their own ideas of what's fun to them. I shouldn't have laughed at you just because your answers were related to your work. I've met similar people, who also found enjoyment in their jobs. What you do is important, and I couldn't imagine what the city would be like without you. You're loved by many." He paused, pulling his beret down slightly as he turned his gaze away from her. "I also…"

He didn't finish his statement, but Barbara could tell he was embarrassed and afraid to say the words out loud. The two had only started dating a few weeks ago, but being in a relationship was entirely new to them. Still, it was clear that the two cherished each other.

"Venti…" Barbara held her arm, her gaze dropping to her feet. "I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have said what I did earlier. You've experienced so much pain. I can't even imagine the things that you have seen and gone through. I wish there was more I could do for you..."

She heard him walk up to her and looked up to see him looking at her with a gentle expression.

"You already do so much for me, Barbara. Just the fact that you exist, and that you care about me, means a lot to me. Honestly, even if I wrote a ballad about it, it wouldn't be long enough to show just how much I treasure you." He cupped his chin with his hand as he looked her over. "Are you sure you're not an Archon?"

Barbara giggled, "I'm sure." She brought her hands behind her back, a faint blush staining her cheeks as she nervously pressed her lips together. "Y-You know, there's something else I like that I find fun. I might even find it more enjoyable than working."

"Really? What is it?"

"I'll give you three guesses. If you guess correctly, I'll reward you."

She saw his green eyes sparkle with excitement. "A reward!? Really?"

"But only if you get it right," Barbara replied as she resumed walking.

"I bet I can get it on the first try," Venti replied, feeling confident. "Let's see… Oh, I know! You love eating spicy food."

"I do enjoy spicy food, but that's not it."

"Huh. I thought that was for sure the answer, but I guess not. Hmm…Is it my ballads? I am the greatest bard in all of Mondstadt after all."

"While I do love listening to your ballads, I'm afraid that's not the answer. You're getting warmer though! One more guess left."

Venti scratched his head, perplexed. "If it's more exciting than my ballads, it must be something really special. Well, the third time's the charm as people say! You said I was getting warmer, so I'm guessing it's something related to me. Hmm..."

Barbara could hear the bard thinking hard to himself as they continued to walk. She offered to give him clues, but he wouldn't have it. He was determined to figure it out by himself.

"The only thing I can think of is spending time with me. Is that it?"

The blonde nodded, clapping her hands together to congratulate him. "Yep, you got it! I know it's a pretty obvious answer, but I really do enjoy spending time with you." She brought her hands together at the front, swaying her body side to side as she felt the heat rush to her cheeks. "A-Anyway, what would you like as a reward? I could make some sweets again, but I would like to make an actual meal for you sometime. I've been wanting to for a while, but I've just been so busy and-"

She suddenly felt him take hold of her chin, tilting it up slightly so that their eyes could meet. There was something about his gaze that made Barbara feel as if she was frozen in place. Like she was prey about to be devoured by her predator, but there wasn't a dangerous look in Venti's eyes. Despite the shivers his green eyes were sending down her spine, the blonde could only see a gentle longing. She felt him slowly trace his thumb over her bottom lip, earning a light gasp from her. He smirked at her reaction.

"I can have anything, right?~"

Barbara wanted to say something, but her words felt like they were caught in her throat. She simply nodded, closing her eyes tightly as she accepted whatever fate he had in store for her.

She felt a gentle sensation against her forehead, and upon opening her eyes, saw that he had placed a kiss against her forehead. Barbara watched as he moved back, a gentle smile on his face.

"While I would love nothing more than to have your lips against mine, trust is a much better tasting wine," he said, giving her a wink.

"Venti…"

The two exchanged a fond gaze as they continued to head back to Mondstadt, their hands entwined.

"Are you sure it's okay for you to be back?"

"Have you grown tired of me already?"

"...You know that's not what I mean."

"...I know."

"If you have to leave, I'll understand. Just make sure to tell me, and-"

The bard stopped briefly, turning towards her. "Barbara, I'm not going anywhere. It's true that I usually sleep for a lot longer to fully recover my powers, but if I did that, who knows when I'd be back? You probably would've forgotten all about me, gotten married, had a family, or even…" He averted his gaze from her, his expression darkening. "I rather not think about the possibility of something happening to you."

"Venti…"

"We're already restricted by the laws of time. I don't want to go to sleep anymore. I want to cherish every moment we have together. It already scares me that one day you'll-"

Barbara stopped him, putting a finger against his lips. "I know. I have the same thoughts every night. I try not to think about it, but knowing the fact that I can't protect you makes me feel useless. But, focusing on what I can't do isn't going to help anyone. I'm going to continue studying and do all I can to protect you."

"Barbara…"

The two eventually came up to the doors of the cathedral. A sad sigh escaped their lips as they didn't want to leave each other's side, but knew they would see each other again. After all, they did reside in the same city.

"Try not to drink too much tonight, okay?"

"I won't promise anything, but if I can, I'll try not to indulge too much."

Barbara sighed, giving him a pitiful smile. "May the Anemo Archon protect… Oh, I suppose I can't say that anymore. I'll have to come up with something else."

"I'm pretty much used to it, so you don't have to change-"

The idol cut him off when she placed a gentle peck against his cheek. She giggled upon seeing his stunned reaction, feeling internally happy, as it was a rare victory for her.

"It may not compare to the power of an Archon, but I hope that protects you in some way. Good night."

Barbara quickly headed inside before Venti had a chance to respond. Once the doors closed behind her, she leaned against them, a soft sigh escaping her lips. A faint blush came to her cheeks when she remembered how the bard had traced a finger across her lips. He always did know how to stir up her heart. However, she was happy that he was fine with taking things slow. That was another worry that the blonde had about their relationship. Not only was this her first time dating someone, but her Archon at that! But despite being the Wind Archon that she worshipped; Barbara loved him as "Venti". Her feelings for him were genuine, and she hoped that the bard knew that.

Venti stood in front of the cathedral, dumbfounded. Although this was the second time Barbara had kissed him, he wasn't expecting it, given how shy she was when it came to intimate affection. He brought his fingers towards the spot where she placed her lips and hummed in content, feeling warm. He giggled happily, proceeding to head down the stairs.

I'd say this night was a great success! I wonder where I should take her next time. I bet she would love riding on Dvalin's back! I'll have to ask him if he'll mind. I bet the two of them would get along great!

As Venti approached the bottom of the stairs, he was suddenly surrounded by a group of men. All of them appeared to be angry, and the bard wasn't sure why. However, he simply greeted them as he would any other person.

"Good evening, gentlemen. I didn't expect to be greeted by a crowd. Are you perhaps eager to hear my performance? Worry not, for I was just on my way to Angel's Share. I'll regale you as many tales as you like for a drink!"

"We're not here to socialize," one man spoke. "It seems you still haven't learned your lesson despite our warnings."

The man then looked to the other men, and in the next moment, Venti found himself pinned to the ground, his face pressed against the cold stone. He watched one of the men take his Vision, handing it to the first man, who originally spoke. The bard assumed that this man was their ringleader.

"H-Hey! What are you doing? Is this any way to treat a citizen?!"

"This all could've been avoided if you just did like we asked," the man replied.

"What do you mean?" Venti asked, confused.

"He's still playing dumb," another man spoke. "Perhaps his memory needs refreshing."

Suddenly, Venti felt one of them kick him in his side. The bard cried out in pain as he felt the hard impact.

"How about now? Did that help jog your memory?"

"I don't know what you're talking about!" Venti yelled, still feeling the intense pain in his side from where they kicked him.

"Does our beloved idol ring a bell?"

"Barbara…? What's this got to with her?"

"I believe we told you at last year's Ludi Harpastum to stay away from her, but it seems our words didn't get through to you. Look, we're not bad men. We didn't even use violence the first time we told you. I'm not sure why Barbara associates with you. I mean, look at you. You're just some bard, who plays for drinks. Barbara is a member of the church. Are you starting to see the picture? Why would our pure Deaconess, hang out with the likes of you? It just doesn't make sense. I'm not saying she isn't allowed to have male friends, but those male friends should know their place and not overstay their welcome. You've been getting far too comfortable around her. Barbara is a nice girl. She's only being nice to you because that's the kind of girl she is. However, you'll only ruin her image by hanging around her. We wouldn't want her image to get tainted, would we?" The man then nodded to the other men. "Tie him up."

Venti felt the other men lift him off the ground, forcing his arms behind his back as they bound his hands with rope. The bard could've easily used his Anemo powers to slip out of their grasp and fight back, but he remembered that they took the orb he disguised as a Vision. If he used his powers, it would've frightened them, and his true identity would've been revealed. However, that's not what worried him the most. It was likely that the men would've spread rumors and told Barbara that he used force against them. The last thing Venti wanted was for the blonde to hate him, so he held back on using his powers.

"Where are you taking me?" Venti asked them.

"Don't worry. As I said before, we're not bad men. We aren't going to kill you if that's what you're asking."

In the next moment, Venti felt himself get knocked out by one of the men, his vision growing dark as he went unconscious.

It felt like hours had passed. The group of men had tied him to a tree, each taking turns throwing punches at him until they had their fill. He saw one of the men throw his fake Vision into a nearby body of water before they left. Of course, they were unaware that the bard could still channel his powers without it. He waited until the men were long gone before using the small bit of strength he had to break the ropes. Venti fell against the grass, coughing as he choked out blood. He could barely move his body after all the retaliation it had gone through. He was far from the tree in Windrise that he used to heal his injuries, and it would be a while before he had enough strength to get to it.

He was ready to accept his fate of being left out in the forest until he heard a pair of footsteps crunch against the grass. He was too weak to gather the strength to turn his head to look at who found him, but thankfully he recognized the voice.

"Venti! You're covered in bruises! What happened?" Jean asked as she helped him off the ground, putting his arm over her shoulder to support him.

"Jean... I'm glad it was you who found me and not-" He coughed, his chest feeling like it was on fire as he did so.

"Don't speak. We need to get your wounds tended to."

"The tree...If you take me there, I'll be able to recover my strength..." Venti replied.

The taller blonde nodded, swooping the bard in her arms so that she could get him there quicker. The action was a little embarrassing, but Venti didn't have it in him to complain. He was just grateful that he wouldn't have to spend the night in the woods.

Upon approaching the tree, Jean sat him gently down against the tree so that his back was against the trunk. Venti then tapped into the tree's energy, beginning to slowly recover. Given that his injuries weren't light, it took a while before the pain started to subside, but eventually, his bruises weren't noticeable anymore.

"Venti, will you tell me what happened? Who did this to you? As Acting Grand Master, I will not allow this violence to-"

"It's okay, Jean. You don't have to worry yourself over this. You've already got enough on your plate as it is." Venti slowly stood up from the ground, resting his hand against the tree's trunk for support. He leaned against it, a sigh escaping his lips. "I'll be fine. Once I get enough rest, I'll be good as-"

"You can't expect me to just stand by!" Jean yelled, frustrated. "The people that you worked so hard to protect, physically attacked you! Are you not the least bit angry? If I don't act now, behavior like this will only-"

"Jean," Venti interrupted her. "Please. I appreciate your concern, but I ask that you don't look into this matter any further." He turned his head towards her, a sad smile on his face. "...I don't want Barbara to worry."

"Venti…"

A dry laugh escaped his lips. "To be honest, I was expecting to suffer under your wrath first before anyone else's. I'm sorry for the pain I caused Barbara. Believe me, I never wanted to hurt her. I knew what the consequences would be, but I had to tell her, Jean. I wanted her to know the truth."

"I know. You don't have to explain." A sigh escaped the taller blonde's lips. "Since you asked, I'll hold off on investigating this matter. I won't speak a word to Barbara."

"Thank you."

"However, you should know more than anyone that Barbara would not be happy with this. My sister cares for you deeply, Venti. The more things you keep hidden from her, the worst things will be later. I ask that you be openly honest with Barbara. You may be the Archon that my family has worshipped for generations, but I will not take lightly to anyone that breaks my sister's heart. She already has a lot on her shoulders. I'm sure you already know. When you left, it broke her. She would not eat or drink anything for days. She was so...lifeless. I sincerely hope that you're not dating her out of pity or guilt."

"I'm not," Venti replied, looking at the taller blonde with serious eyes. "I would never do that to Barbara. Your sister is important to me, Jean. If circumstances were different I would-" He paused, stopping himself. "Please believe me when I say your sister is very dear to me. I swear on my life and on Mondstadt itself."

"...Very well. Come, I'll lend you some clean clothes while I get yours washed."

"Thank you, Jean."

Some time had passed since Barbara's last date with Venti. She had noticed that something seemed off about him whenever they would meet briefly after her work had ended for the day. The bard was constantly checking his surroundings and made sure not to stand too close to her. Being that the blonde was already exhausted from work, she didn't think anything of it at first, assuming that maybe it was just her mind playing tricks on her, but then she noticed that Venti wouldn't engage in their conversations. His responses were short, and he always appeared to be in some sort of daze, like his mind was somewhere else. When asking if anything was wrong, he immediately assured her that he was fine, just a bit tired. Thinking it was because he had returned from his slumber too soon, Barbara mentioned again that she would understand if he had to leave, but it only triggered a negative reaction from him.

"I SAID I'M FINE! Even if I wasn't, there's NOTHING you can do to help me! Get it through your head already!" Venti yelled as he arose from the bench that they were sitting on.

There was a moment of silence, and Barbara watched as the bard's expression immediately changed upon realizing how harsh his tone was. The blonde tried her best to hold back her tears, but she could feel them already seeping out as she felt a teardrop hit her hand. She turned her head away from him.

"...I know. I know there's nothing I can do for you. That's why, even though I know my healing is useless, I still want to do everything I can to help you... You're important to me, Venti."

"Barbara, I-"

The idol wiped her tear-stained face with her hands, arising from the bench. She simply smiled at the bard despite the pain she felt in her heart.

"I'm sorry for making you upset. I won't ask anymore. I... I'll try not to bother you again..."

Before Venti could say anything, Barbara ran back to the cathedral. Once she was safely inside, the sobs she desperately tried to hold back came out. She slumped to the floor, her hands towards her chest as her tears fell against the hard floor.

Weeks had passed since then. As much as it pained the blonde, she ignored him whenever he attempted to speak with her. He tried to soothe her anger against him by alluring her with music and bouquets of flowers. It almost worked, but Barbara hardened her heart and continued to give him the cold shoulder. The blonde figured the bard would've gotten the hint and given up, but she forgot how persistent he was. Eventually, he stopped speaking and would merely just look at her. He knew the other nuns would kick him out if he tried to disturb her, so he pretended to pray to avoid suspicion. He would sit on the same bench from morning to evening, not moving an inch. A few of the nuns offered to get rid of him if his presence was making her uncomfortable, but Barbara let him stay. She worried what other means Venti would resort to if he had been banished from the church. She experienced firsthand the kind of power he unleashed wherever his emotions got the better of him.

One night, Barbara had to stay behind to finish tending to a last-minute patient. The other nuns had already left, and she was the only one remaining inside the church. It wasn't until she saw green in the corner of her eye that she realized that Venti was still there. He was sitting up, but he had fallen asleep. The blonde sighed, knowing she would have to wake him up and ask him to leave. She slowly approached him, her heels clicking against the tile flooring. She was about to call out to him but got distracted by his features. His long eyelashes; the peaceful expression on his face; his lips, which were always curved into a smirk or cheeky grin. She felt the heat rush to her cheeks and shook her head from side to side to snap herself out of it.

No. Don't let yourself be distracted, Barbara. I'm still angry at him for what he said. Even if I miss his smile; his laugh; the way his eyes light up at the smallest things; the soothing sound of his voice when he sings his ballads… A soft sigh escaped the blonde's lips. I know he probably didn't mean to hurt me. I just wish he would open up to me… Maybe a human and an Archon shouldn't be together. We're just too different… But I can't help but care for him.

As the blonde extended out a hand to wake the bard up, she stopped, noticing a dark spot on his neck. Given that the collar on his dress shirt was high, it would've easily been missed, but Barbara happened to glance there.

"Is that...a bruise?"

When her fingertips lightly brushed against his skin, Venti immediately awoke, a terrified scream escaping his lips as he moved away. She saw his green eyes look at her with fear, but then after recognizing that it was her, he slowly relaxed, his breathing becoming steady. He arose from the bench, his eyes not looking at her.

"...Sorry, I didn't realize I fell asleep. I'll be going now."

"Venti, wait! That bruise...Where did it come from?" Barbara asked, concerned.

"It's nothing."

The bard tried to walk away from her, but Barbara stepped in front of him, holding her arms out to prevent him from going around her.

"A bruise wouldn't just appear on you for no reason! Even if I'm not able to use my healing on you, I still want to help you. Please…"

"...Even though I made you cry again. You still want to help me?"

"...Yes. I'm still hurt by what you said to me, but I can't turn away someone in need." Barbara lowered her arms back down to her side, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Especially if it's someone I-"

The blonde suddenly saw him fall towards her, and immediately caught him, nearly almost falling to the floor from trying to support his weight.

"Venti...?"

He didn't respond, but she could hear soft breathing. The blonde assumed he fell unconscious. She shifted their bodies to where she had one of his arms over her shoulders so that she could support him. She slowly began making her way towards her home where she could tend to him.

Thankfully, Barbara had the day off tomorrow. She immediately laid the bard down in a bed. Changing him into a cleaner set of clothes proved difficult, as he was still knocked out and the blonde wanted to avoid seeing any of his private parts, but somehow, she managed to successfully get him out of his original clothes. Once that was out of the way, she tended to his bruises. Venti didn't have that many, but some of them were quite large. The idol created a mixture of different herbs and applied a generous amount before placing a heated cloth over his skin. She watched over him throughout the night, not wanting to leave his side. As she gazed upon his sleeping face, she wondered who did this to him. She knew Venti was the playful sort that could often get himself into trouble, but he never meant anything bad by his actions.

Barbara couldn't fight off sleep forever and eventually drifted off. It wasn't until she felt the sensation of something running through her hair that she awoke. She noticed that Venti was awake.

"Ah…" The blonde immediately fixed her posture. "How are you feeling? Are you experiencing any pain?"

Venti didn't respond but continued to stare at her. He was probably too weak to talk.

"You haven't eaten anything, right? I'll go make you some Radish Veggie Soup and some dandelion tea with honey. I'll be right back, okay?"

Barbara stood up to leave but immediately felt him grab her hand. She turned her head back towards him, noticing a pleading look in his eyes.

"It won't take long, I promise. Just wait here, okay?"

She gave his hand a light squeeze to reassure him before heading to the kitchen to make his food. She also mashed up some apples for him just in case the soup was too intense for him. Returning to the room, she noticed he was sitting up now. He seemed to be in a daze, which was normal, considering how long he was out, but he did notice her presence when she came back into the room. Barbara sat the tray down in front of him.

"It's still a little hot, but you'll feel much better after you eat! I even mashed some apples."

The bard simply stared down at the food, still not giving a verbal response.

"What's wrong? Are you not hungry?"

He slowly nodded.

"Can you eat just a little bit? Please?"

There was a moment of silence, but she saw him pick up the spoon and begin to eat the soup. A wave of relief washed over the blonde. She was happy that he tried to eat. Surprisingly, he managed to finish everything despite not feeling hungry. After Barbara took the dishes away, she returned to his side

"Is there anything else you need?"

She saw him gently pat the spot beside him on the bed. It took a moment for the blonde to realize what he meant, but when she did, she felt the heat rush to her cheeks. Even though it was likely that he just wanted company, the blonde had never slept in the same bed with another male before, an Archon at that. Barbara had to mentally prepare herself, and say a few silent prayers before she worked up the courage to head over to the bed. She slipped underneath the blankets, lying on her back. She could feel him staring at her even though she was trying her best not to look at him directly.

"I... I'm going to turn off the light now, okay?"

She reached over and turned the switch.

The room went dark, the only source of light being the moon as it shone through the curtains. Barbara was laying on her side, her back facing Venti. Even though he hadn't said or did anything, she could feel her heart beat rapidly inside her chest. She tried closing her eyes in an attempt to sleep, but heard his voice shortly after.

"Barbara..."

The blonde heard him but didn't respond. His voice sounded a little healthier.

"I understand if you don't want to hear my voice right now, but I need to confirm something. At the cathedral, before I went unconscious, what you said…" He paused. "Were you going to say what I think you were?"

"..." Barbara turned towards him, her eyes instantly meeting his green ones. There was a small amount of distance between them. He could've scooted closer at any time, but he didn't. He probably knew she was nervous and didn't want her to feel uncomfortable. Despite how dark it was in the room, Venti's eyes appeared as if they were glowing, like Lamp Grass at night. She always thought his eyes were beautiful in an enchanting sort of way.

"...If you tell me what's going on, I'll answer your question. Be honest with me."

She saw his gaze lower as a sigh escaped his lips. He then looked back to her, giving her a slight nod in agreement.

"I kept quiet because I didn't want you to worry. You already shoulder so many responsibilities on your own. I didn't want this to be an extra burden on you. These bruises...They came from a group of men, who I assume are fans of yours. You weren't there when it happened, but at Ludi Harpastum, when we danced together, it made a few people jealous. People came up to me asking me questions about if I could provide for you...what my relationship to you was...How many of your concerts I had been to..." The bard cracked a light smile. "I didn't realize how protective people were of you. I guess I can't blame them. I don't exactly have the best reputation in Mondstadt. I'm sort of a pain to deal with, huh?" He sighed lightly as he continued. "Since we're in a relationship, I've been seeing you more often than I had previously. I guess your fans have started to notice, and this must've been their way of getting me to stay away from you. However, they underestimated me. I'm very persistent, you know," he said, winking at her. "It'll take more than a few scraps to get me to stay away from my darling Deaconess." His tone then shifted. "Even if they threatened to take my life, I…I still wouldn't. Not saying that would happen, of course! I may not have my Gnosis, but I still have tricks up my sleeve!"

"Venti…"

Barbara shifted her body closer towards him, gently caressing the side of his face with her hand. She heard a content sigh escape his lips as he held her hand in place with his.

"...Maybe they're right. As a bard, I don't make enough to provide for you. The few Mora I do make; I spend on wine rather than food. I may be an Archon, but I'm the weakest of them all. You deserve to be with someone better, like a knight or maybe even a fellow member of the church. Not with someone like-"

Barbara cut him off as she placed her forehead against his, staring deeply into his eyes.

"Venti, I don't want to be with anyone else. I'm not just saying that because you're the Archon that my family has worshipped for generations. While I am forever thankful to Lord Barbatos, Venti, the bard, who loves apples; who constantly gives me a hard time; and who is always full of life, is the one that I fell in love with."

She saw a look of surprise on his face, but his expression immediately softened as he looked at her with a warm gaze.

"I'm guessing that answers my question of what you were going to tell me at the church."

Barbara blushed, averting her gaze from him as she turned on her back, looking up towards the ceiling.

"We haven't even known each other that long, but I can't explain it… Maybe it's because this is the first time I've felt like this, but I just...I just feel like I'm meant to be by your side if that makes sense. I don't understand it myself, but I wish I could be with you always."

She felt him hold her hand firmly as to reaffirm her feelings.

"Me too."

The two looked to each other, exchanging warm glances before they shifted their bodies so that they could hold each other close. She felt him place a kiss on top of her head and she, in turn, pecked him gently on the cheek. They stayed like that for a while, enjoying the warmth of each other's presence before they both drifted off to sleep.

Days passed and eventually with some rest along with visits to the tree in Windrise, Venti was able to fully recover and was back to his usual self. Barbara was busy planning another performance, so he kept his distance so that she could focus. The idol was going to reveal something big at the end of her concert and hoped he would be there to hear it. He wasn't sure what it was the blonde was planning to reveal, but she seemed excited about it, so he figured it was something good.

On the day of the concert, it felt like there were more people than usual. Everyone from the Knights of Favonius to bartenders, to even the Adventurer's Guild was there. Barbara's fan club was there too, of course. It wasn't hard for Venti to distinguish them from the crowd, but he made sure to keep his distance from them given recent events. He snuck backstage to see Barbara. Although she had performed many times, she still got nervous before going on stage. He could see her pacing back and forth, hands clasped together. The bard walked up to her.

"If you pace any harder, you might wear down your heels."

The blonde stopped, turning around, a warm smile on her face when she saw him.

"Venti!"

He watched as she ran up to him, her twintails bouncing as she went up to him and hugged him. The bard wrapped his arms around her waist gently, sighing in content at the feeling of having her in his arms. They stayed like that for a moment before letting go, their eyes immediately connecting.

"I'm glad you could make it."

"Of course! I wouldn't miss one of your concerts. Besides, I hear the main singer is quite the beauty. I'm hoping she'll look my way," he replied, giving her a wink.

He saw a faint blush come to her cheeks as she averted her gaze from him. "Oh, you…"

"Barbara, you're all set!" A female voice called out from backstage.

"O-Okay…" Barbara replied, her voice trembling a little from her nerves.

"You'll be great, Barbara. Just don't think about it too much, and have fun like you always do," Venti said, gently holding her by the shoulders. "I'll be close by, so if you ever feel scared, just look over at me."

"Venti…" She nodded, giving him a warm smile. "You're right. I should just have fun!"

He felt her place a quick peck against his cheek before running towards the stage. Venti felt the same warmth spread throughout his body whenever she kissed him, and he couldn't help but grin like an idiot. He quickly went to find a good place to see the concert. He sat on the rooftops of a building nearby, which gave him the perfect view. The bard watched as Barbara stepped out onto the stage, the crowd immediately cheering.

"Thank you everyone for coming! I'm glad you could all make it. Are you ready to hear my songs?" Barbara asked.

The crowd cheered loudly in response, earning a cute giggle from the idol.

"All right then! Let the show begin!"

The concert was a success as Venti expected it to be. Barbara's nerves pretty much went out the window once the music started. She was as radiant as her smile that kept up throughout the entire performance. There were a couple of times where she secretly glanced in the bard's direction and gave him a wink. He wouldn't have thought anything of it before as it was something she usually did in her performances, but given that the two were in a relationship, he could feel the heat rise to his cheeks at the cute action. The charming blonde was doing things to him. In a good way, of course.

Barbara took a short break after her last song, but returned to the stage once she was ready. It seemed it was time for her big reveal.

"Thank you, everyone, once again for coming! I hope my concert has made you all happy. Lord Barbatos has given me many blessings in my life. If he wasn't the Archon of Mondstadt, my work as an idol probably wouldn't have gotten very far. I've been blessed with many wonderful friends, an amazing older sister, and kind fans. Not too long ago, I received another blessing... I have kept it a secret from you all, but it is something I would like to share."

Venti could hear the murmurs of the crowd as they wondered what this new blessing could be. However, the bard already knew what the blonde was going to say. He watched with anticipation yet was also feeling scared at the same time.

"...A boyfriend," Barbara continued. "I know this might be shocking news to all of you, but I have started dating someone recently. His name is Venti. You may have seen him around as he usually plays near the fountains. Of course, I have not neglected my duties as a Deaconess now that I am in a relationship. Lord Barbatos will always be first in my heart. Venti is very understanding when it comes to my work, and he has done nothing but support me. Like Lord Barbatos, he gives me the strength to carry through each day. Before, I only saw him for how he behaved on the outside, but after getting to know him, I realized that he is a kind soul." She paused for a moment, exhaling deeply. "Mondstadt is the City of Freedom, and because it is so, I have the freedom to date who I choose. I ask that you please respect my relationship and give us privacy. Anyone who has ill intentions towards my boyfriend is no fan of mine. If...If me being happy bothers you, then please leave."

There was a long silence as the people in the crowd all looked around, wondering who would be the first to leave. To no surprise, Venti saw the men, who had beaten him up, make their way out of the crowd. He could hear them curse underneath their breath as they walked away.

"Good riddance," Venti said, as he waved goodbye to them.

Everyone else seemed to stay, not looking the least bit bothered. However, Barbara seemed surprised that not more left.

"If...If anyone else wants to leave, I'll understand! You don't have to stay if you want to," Barbara said.

"Why would we leave? It's about time you found yourself a fella! You're always locked away inside that church after all," a woman commented.

"That's…" A faint blush came to the blonde's cheeks. "I wouldn't say always…"

The crowd busted into laughter, but it wasn't that they were making fun of her. Barbara was just so endearing. It was precious how she didn't realize how much of a workaholic she was.

"Where is your boyfriend, Miss Barbara? Are we ever going to meet him?" a young girl asked.

Barbara smiled, turning her attention towards the rooftops where Venti was sitting. He suddenly had the crowd's attention as they were wondering where the blonde was looking. The bard smiled as he stood up. He braced himself before he leaped off the roof, falling freely. He heard the crowd gasp, worried expressions on their faces. Venti then took out his wind gilder, and safely landed on the stage beside Barbara, earning him loud cheering from the crowd. He chuckled as he bowed, a smile on his face.

"Do you always have to be so reckless?" Barbara asked, sighing as she placed her hands on her hips.

"Worry not, my darling Deaconess. I would never injure myself on purpose. Although, the thought of having you tend to me is kind of tempting. Think late night cuddles have become my favorite type of medicine," he said, winking playfully at her.

He saw her take a step back, her blue eyes widened in surprise as her cheeks flushed red with embarrassment.

"You are so…!"

Before the blonde could tear the bard a new one, the two noticed Outrider Amber coming up to them.

"Sorry to interrupt, but I have a question for your boyfriend, Barbara. I don't recall you ever taking the Gliding License Exam, Venti. Gliding without a license in Mondstadt is considered a violation. Normally, I would take you in, but because it's a special day, I'm going to have to revoke your glider for the time being until you take the exam," Amber said, holding out her hand.

"Well Barbara, it seems like that's my cue! This bard will have to bid you a quick adieu!"

Venti channeled Anemo energy as he leaped off the stage, jumping over the crowd and landing behind them. He broke off running, giggling as he heard Amber yell at him to stop. The bard held onto his beret so it wouldn't fall off as he ran. His lips spread into a happy grin.

Looks like things are going to be lively for a while!
