A/N: Alright so since we were graced with a description of the PD's episode of March 10th, my brain did what it always does and went into overdrive and cooked up Burgewater angst so no matter what happens in that episode, this is what I made of it.

She never thought she'd be in that situation, but now she was rooted in her spot, the sounds ringing in her ears. Adam and Kevin had been on their way back to the district, Adam had even called her to tell her he was on his way because he knew that the case had worried her but when she heard the crash through the phone, her world had stopped spinning on its axis and her legs felt like lead.

"Kim, what happened?" She could hear talking but couldn't recognize whose voice it belonged to. "Kim." She was shook back to reality and she blinked back, Jay's form coming back into focus. "Tell us what's going on." Still, she couldn't find her voice.

"Hank, I got a call from Squad 3, Kevin and Adam were in a crash, they are taking them to Med."

"How bad is it?" Voight asked as he grabbed his coat, ready to leave.

"It's not good." Everything was moving in slow motion for Kim.

"Kim, who's on the other end of the line?" Jay reached for her phone that was still stuck between her fingers, her fingers releasing their hold on it. He thumbed through the incoming calls and saw that the last one was Adam's number. "Kim, you got to move, we're going to go to Med to have an update." He cupped her cheeks and forced her eyes to meet his. "Ruzek and Atwater are going to need you to be strong for the both of them." Her eyes swam with tears that wouldn't fall but when she finally snapped of it enough to hear Jay's words, she followed him, grabbing her coat on the way out. She rode with Jay and Hailey in silence while Hank and Trudy rode together, the desk Sargant barely hanging on herself. The whole team made it to Med at the same time and they were met in the waiting room by Squad, giving them the limited details they had on their hands, not willing to give out any false information.

"How about you sit down while we go get an update?" Voight watched Jay set Kim on a chair, Hailey taking a spot next to her, Trudy on her other side.

"What the hell happened?" Voight hissed as they made it to the nurse's station

"I don't know Sarge. I think Burgess was on the phone with Ruzek when it happened, she's not saying much."

"We keep an eye on her while we wait to have some news, those three are too close."

"Okay." Jay exchanged a look with Hailey and she nodded, understanding what Jay was asking of her. "They waited until they spotted Maggie."

"Any news about Ruzek or Atwater?"

"They were both wheeled into the OR a few minutes ago. It doesn't look very good."

"Is there anyone who can update us on their condition?" Jay questioned, his eyes going from Maggie to the waiting room.

"I'll send your brother as soon as he comes back down, he was the first to assess them."

"Thanks Maggie." He smiled at her and he and Voight returned to the rest of the group.

"They're both in the OR and Will is going to come see us as soon as he comes back down." Kim looked at him, the tears that were threatening to fall earlier were barely holding on. Trudy was the first to see Will walk towards them, so she met him half-way.

"What can you tell us doc?"

"The two came in pretty bad shape. Atwater got off easy considering. Fractured wrist, bad bruises and a severe concussion."

"What about Adam?" Kim hadn't spoken until then.

"He got hit pretty hard. His legs were crushed on impact, left shoulder is broken, and his left lung is punctured." Kim could no longer hold back the tears or the cry that escaped her lips. Trudy held onto her to keep her upright.

"What are the chances?" Trudy asked the tough questions.

"I'm not ready to talk about those right now. They are both in very capable hands in the OR and as soon as they can, they'll come give you an update. I'll bring you upstairs to wait there."

"Thanks, Will." Trudy helped Kim back into a chair as she cried, the reality and severity of the situation finally hitting her. "Kim, honey, are you okay to go upstairs, we'll be closer to them?" Kim ran the back of her hand against her eyes before standing. Squad was now gone, returning to the firehouse to finish their shift and the rest of the unit was already in the elevator.

"They'll pull through, they have to." Kim took deep breaths, trying to calm her raging nerves and the million scenarios running through her head.

"I know they'll fight like hell, both of them. Atwater is resilient and Ruzek is a stubborn son of a bitch." Kim chuckled dryly. Only Platt put humour in a bad situation like this. When they found the team in the waiting room close to the OR, Kim took a seat and buried her hands in her hands, sobs shaking her body.

"Hey, can I get you a coffee Kim? Something to eat?" Hailey kneeled down in front of her.

"I'm not hungry." She chocked up, looking at her with bloodshot eyes.

"Alright." Hailey looked at Platt who nodded and Hailey left them alone, returning minutes later with a coffee for Platt and bottle of water for Kim. "I just need you to take a few sips." Kim took the bottle that was offered to her and humoured Upton.

"Thanks." She gave her a small smile.

"Hang in there, everything will be okay." She sure as hell hoped that they would be because no matter how she denied it to herself, both Kevin and Adam were her world and if anything happened to either one of them, she didn't know how she would cope. Hailey retreated to join both Voight and Halstead. "So, what now?" She asked. "How do we catch these guys?"

"We circle back." Voight said. "From when we sent them out to Adam's phone call to Kim."

"We're short in manpower." Jay stated the obvious. They were even before this happened but now that two of their own were in critical condition and the third holding onto the hope of getting good news, it was a near impossible task.

"I made a few phone calls. Two Detectives from Homicide will be giving you a hand and I'll be there as soon as we get concrete news."

"We're on it." Jay agreed and he and Hailey were gone to chase whatever lead they could find to get their hands on the people who did that to their friends.

"What's taking so long? Kim finally took to pacing as the minutes turned into hours without news from anyone.

"They'll give us news as soon as they can Burgess." Trudy was trying to stay hopeful for all their sakes.

"It's been hours already Trudy. We should have heard something by now." Kim was starting to get agitated and when her pacing landed her view of a gurney getting wheeled out of the OR, she ran to it, walking next to it, Kevin barely conscious. "Kev, it's me, you're going to be okay."

"I'm sorry miss but you have to let us settle him in and let him rest."

"I just want to know what's going on."

"The doctor will come see you shortly." Kevin was wheeled into the elevators and Kim was left standing in front of the closing doors, Trudy suddenly by her side.

"Come on Burgess, I'm sure they'll come update us soon." Trudy guided her back to the waiting room where Hank was now talking with a doctor.

"Officer Atwater is suffering from a concussion but we're monitoring for some swelling in the brain. As for the bruises, those will take time to heal, and he'll need to do some rehabilitation for his broken wrist before we can talk about him going back to work."

"Can we go see him?" Kim was fidgeting in her spot.

"He's still groggy from the surgery but someone can sit with him."

"Alright, thanks doc." He nodded and left the three alone. "How about I go sit with him while you wait to hear from Adam?" Trudy offered.

"Thanks, Sarge." Kim really wanted to be there with him, but she couldn't leave Adam's side, even if he was still being worked on in the OR.

"Hang in there." She pulled Kim into a hug. "He'll be okay, think good thoughts Burgess." Trudy wiped away the tear that fell down her cheek and gave her a shaky smile of her own when Kim nodded. Voight promised to keep her updated on Adam's condition as soon as he had some. Kim returned to her seat when Trudy left, trying not to let her mind cook up every possible and impossible outcome and Voight came to sit with her, placing his hand on hers.

"He's going to be okay, he's a Ruzek." Bad blood was no longer a thing between the older Ruzek and Voight, a silent agreement between the two.

"I know that he's stubborn and a fighter but what if he doesn't make it? What if that's the last conversion I have with him? This can't be the last time I see him." Voight pulled her into him as she started crying, no longer able to keep her emotions in check.

"I won't be." He let her cry, knowing how much the man on the other side of the door meant to her. "But you will have to put up with him while he rehabs, are you sure you're ready to deal with that?" He tried to lighten the mood, hoping to help keep her thoughts positive.

"I'll put up with his bad temper and impatience every day if it means I get to see him again." She gave him a watery chuckle.

"He's a lucky bastard that you put up with him at all." They were interrupted by a doctor in scrubs, making his way to them.

"We just finished performing surgery on Officer Ruzek." Kim was on her feet in seconds.

"How is he? How did it go? Will he be okay?" Voight placed a hand on her shoulder to try to ground her so the doctor could give them an update.

"The broken shoulder was an easy fix and while at first we thought his legs would have to be extensively repaired, the damage was located in his left knee with a broken right ankle so that's the good news."

"What about his punctured lung?" Kim couldn't trust her voice, so Voight asked the question

"That was a bit trickier. Not only was there air in the pleural space, but we also found blood, so we had to insert a chest tube to be able to drain it all out." Kim could hardly comprehend everything but the chest tube she knew wasn't a good sign. "The drain will have to stay in place for a few days and we will have to monitor him closely to make sure that there are no complications, so he'll be settled in the ICU for a few days just as a precaution."

"How long until we can go see him?"

"ICU allows one visitor at a time, but being a CPD officer, there are no visit time regulation so someone can sit with him for as long as you need just as long as there is no interference with the medical team."

"We understand."

"ICU is on the third floor; he should be brought there shortly."

"Thank you for saving his life."

"I'm just doing my job." He assured her. "I will come check on him later." Kim nodded and she was left alone with Voight again.

"Are you okay to go up there? I'd update Trudy and see what the team's managed to find?"

"Yeah, I'm good, thanks Sarge."

"I'll be up in a bit. Voight watched her as she walked to the elevators before going in search of Platt.

The ride up to the next floor felt like an eternity to Kim. She didn't know what she would expect when she got there. He was always met with close calls, but Adam Ruzek never ended up in the hospital and this was new for her. She watched from afar while the staff settled him in an individual room. When the bustling had quieted down, she introduced herself at the nurse's station, flashing her badge so she could see him without any problem. The nurse gave her a breakdown of what would happen in the following hours before she went to go see him. She leaned against the door, hands pressed to the cool metal, eyes swimming in tears. He looked so fragile with his legs all bandaged and the tube sticking out of the side of chest, attached to a suction machine. Thin clots were coming out from his chest and into the container that collected the excess blood from the suction. She closed her eyes to summon the strength to get through it, to help him through it when he woke up. She needed him to wake up, to tell her that everything would be okay and that they would get through it together.

A/N: So Adam is still in critical condition following a complicated surgery and Kevin seems to have gotten off easy but how will Kim deal with her best friend and the love of her life fighting for their lives? I really hope you liked this chapter so please take a few seconds of your time to review before you go, I really want to know what you think. - Sarra
