Finally, Harry was on the way to Hogwarts. The train rounded the corner and the platform disappeared. When Harry sat on the seat again, the compartment door slid opened and a girl with long light brown hair came in.
"Hello, may I sit here?"
"Of course." Harry accepted.
"Thank you."
The girl sat down on the seat opposite Harry and then held out her hand with a smile.
"Ellie Klein. Nice to meet you. I am a first-year."
"Harry Potter. Glad to meet you, too. I am also the first year."
Both shook hands and Ellie didn't show any reaction to his name like the red-headed family before. So Harry thought she might be a muggle-born or lived in other countries because of her accent. Before he asked a question about her, the compartment door opened again and the youngest red-headed boy came in.
"Can I share? Everywhere is full."
"Sure." Harry pointed at the seat next to him.
The red-headed boy sat down next to Harry and saw him with a bit nervous face.
"I'm Ellie Klein. Nice to meet you." Ellie introduced herself first.
"I'm Ron, Ron Weasley. Nice to meet you, too." Ron said awkwardly to Ellie.
"I'm Harry Potter. Nice…" Harry couldn't finish his sentence.
"Are you really Harry Potter?" Ron's eyes became as big as saucers.
Harry nodded with a sheepish smile and Ellie looked at both of the boys with curiousness.
"Is Harry famous in the UK?" Ellie couldn't help asking.
"Famous? Are you mental? How don't you know Harry Potter?" Ron's face and voice couldn't hide bewilderment. "You don't know the Boy-Who-Lived at all?"
"No, I've never heard that name. And what is the Boy-Who-Lived?" Ellie wanted to know what Ron was talking about.
"No way!" Ron's jaw dropped. Harry was quite embarrassed.
"I was born and lived in the US but my daddy is British No Maj. I returned to the UK two years ago and went to a mundane primary school so don't know British magical society well. Do I have to know you and the boy whatever?"
"Uh…." Harry couldn't say he was famous for what he has no memory of. "By the way, what is No Maj?" He decided to ask an easy question.
"Oh, Americans call non-magical people No Majs while British call them Muggles," Ellie answered lightly.
"Can't believe it! Haven't you read the Daily Prophet? He…" Ron was still in shock.
"No, my mom doesn't subscribe to that and she rarely contacts British magical society." Ellie's tone was calm.
"Then, your mum is a witch?" Harry interrupted to avoid an awkward situation.
"Yes, my mom is an American witch with German heritage. Mom's father and grandparents had escaped from Germany to hide from Grindelwald gangs."
"Grindelwald?" Harry had no idea who he was but felt that he should be as bad as Voldemort.
"Yes, he was really really a bad wizard in Europe from the '20s to early '40s. Many good people had died because of his gang, including my great-uncle." Ellie replied with passion.
"Sounds like Voldemort." Harry said casually and Ellie nodded.
"What? You are saying his name?" Ron shouted with horror. Ellie had no idea of Ron's reaction, unlike Harry.
"What's wrong with that name? Voldemort means 'flee from death' in French and it means he is just a coward who is most afraid of his own death." Ellie said curiously.
Harry was surprised at Ellie's casual explanation because he remembered how Hagrid was afraid to say his name. Ron couldn't believe a half American witch said You-Know-Who a coward. Then, he suddenly remembered something.
"Wait! You said you don't know about Harry Potter or the Boy-Who-Lived but you know You-Know-Who? How could you!?" Ron couldn't help shouting at Ellie.
"Because most American magical society know Voldemort but they don't believe a baby defeated him though a few books mentioned that a baby survived from his Killing curse and Voldemort's disappeared since Halloween 1981," Ellie answered casually again but it was not enough explanation for Ron.
"Most Americans don't believe? That's nonsense!" Unlike Ron, Harry started to think they might be right. How could a baby have such a big power to defeat a powerful villain like Voldemort?
"Of course, my mom and I, like most American magical folks, think that his parents should've had put a very powerful protective charm on the boy that reflected the killing curse. There is an ancient magic to protect people from fatal curses." Ellie said with a matter-of-fact tone.
Ellie's words struck Harry heavily. Though Hagrid and people at Leaky Cauldron thought Harry defeated Voldemort, he agreed that it was his parents who protected him.
"I think Ellie is right."
Harry's agreement dumbfounded Ron. "B, But…."
"I have no memory of that Halloween night and it is more reasonable that my Mum and Dad put me on protective charm. Hagrid said they were very talented witch and wizard."
Harry saw Ellie who nodded in return. However, Ron couldn't agree with Ellie. It sounds like that hell freezes over. Harry wanted to finish this uncomfortable topic so he asked Ellie about her life in America. While Harry and Ellie enjoyed talking, Ron couldn't recover from the shock well. Finally, Ron participated in the conversation when Harry asked Ron about British magical society.
The rest of the journey was enjoyable. Harry bought foods from the old witch with a food cart and they shared all foods including Ellie and Ron's sandwiches. Then, they played exploding card games and other board games which Ellie brought.
In the afternoon, Neville Longbottom and Hermione Granger opened the compartment door and asked whether they saw a toad. Ellie advised them to ask Prefects to summon the toad and they left happily.
After some time, the compartment door slid opened again and Draco Malfoy with two boys came in and offered Harry friendship. But Harry refused that offer as Malfoy insulted Ron's family. So Malfoy tried to threaten Harry and Ron, however, Ron's pet rat bit Goyle, and three boys left the compartment. Ellie was quite annoyed by unexpected visitors so put a locking charm on the compartment door. Then, peace came back.
After the train journey finished, first-years led by Hagrid rode boats to reach Hogwarts.
In the sorting ceremony, Ellie sorted to Gryffindor as well as Neville and Hermione while Malfoy sorted to Slytherin. When Harry put on the sorting hat, it recommended him Slytherin. But Harry begged the hat he wanted to go to Gryffindor like Ellie instead of Slytherin. Harry really hated to be Slytherin with Malfoy. So the hat sorted Harry to Gryffindor. All Gryffindor students except Ellie were excited to have Harry. And Ron joined the Gryffindor table. Harry was happy that he sorted with his friends in the same house, not Slytherin, and the foods were great though Dumbledore mentioned a terrible death thing.
When Harry lied down on the four-poster bed in Gryffindor Tower, he slept with an expectation of new life.
