You know, when I thought about what would happen after I died, I expected either golden gates(though given my opinion on Christianity and their god in general I found it unlikely) or flames everywhere, or even one of the many different afterlives from different cultures that I never heard about.

Would it be petty for some god to doom me to eternal punishment because I didn't immediately pick him over the many others? Yes, but then again if I was a god I wouldn't bother being fair, whoever came up with the concept of benevolent gods certainly never heard that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Unless gods really do get their powers from how many followers they have(in which case they aren't all that benevolent since they are using humans as basically batteries) they have no reason to care about humanity. That would explain why so many gods in mythology commit atrocities or even just dick around, humans don't care when they step on ants, why would gods care when they screw over beings that are both infinitely less powerful and with a much shorter lifespan (with gods usually being immortal or at least ageless and the average human living maybe 90 years).

But I'm getting sidetracked(and you better get used to it because I do that a lot), what I meant was that I expected a lot, what I didn't expect was torture by boredom.

I have been floating? Can you even float with no body? Floating in this void for who knows how long, though I can't help but feel it is ironic, I always complained that my life was boring, that's why I loved fiction so much, why go through an afternoon at the office when you could be slaying dragons or saving the universe.

Well, the paycheck for one but that's not the point, the point is that its ironic that after an entire life, though not a particularly long one, running from boredom I end up doomed to be bored for eternity.

Heh, I always did enjoy a bit of poetic irony.

I have to say, I'm impressed, usually people freak out or deny their deaths, I have never seen someone who has spent five hours talking to themselves about nothing in particular only for when they finally address their death they find humor in it, dark humor, sure, but still...

...You know, God, if you were going to send me to hell just because I found most faiths following you hypocritical at best, at least you could have been punctual about it.

Snarky to the end, huh?

I'm sure your omniscient knowledge told you already, but I'm a salt the earth kind of guy, if I'm going to hell, then at least I won't let you enjoy it.

I'm not God, and you're not going to hell, I mean you'll probably go there eventually but not right now.

Who are you then?

I'm...an inventor, of sorts.

I created something and I want you to test it.

Oh great, a lab rat for all eternity, could be worse, I guess.

I think you'll enjoy being my lab rat in this one.

I was once like you, I too was chosen and now I chose you. Our...group is in need of a new member, spend a few eternities with the same whimsical teenagers and you'll want some new blood too.

I see, and what exactly is this group?

The Guild of Gamers

No way...no fucking way!?

Yep, you have been chosen to become a gamer, and eventually, when you become strong enough, join us on the throne above the omniverse.

Oh man, this is gonna be awesome.

I'm glad you're happy, my fellow gamers usually antagonize their champions but I have found that it is better to build a friendship from the start, picking a new champion is a pain and I'd rather not have my lab destroyed again.

Neat, quick question, will I be the only gamer?

Each gamer gets their own multiverse, so unless you go to the universe of the original gamer manwha you will be the only gamer around, even then, I'm much stronger than Gaia.

Until you complete your ascension and join us you shouldn't see any other gamers.

Will I have to be evil? I remember reading fanfiction like this and usually, hero gamers either die soon or get killed by other gamers.

No, I have read your file, as long as you don't go picking fights with other gamers we don't care what you do in your multiverse.

Be the hero, be the villain, avoid the plot altogether.

We at the Guild of Gamers have a mind your own business policy.

Cool, I'm not some dumb shonen protagonist that has to save everyone but I also don't want to go around stabbing random people for fun.

Now, I will be watching but you will be left mostly in the care of my system, any other questions before we part?

Anything I should know about the system?

My system is pretty standard, gamer's mind and body, observe, the works.

The only detail you should know is that to prevent instant OPness my system is heavily reliant on the shop.

In the Gamer's shop, you will be able to buy any item, skill or power from across the multiverse with credits, the more valuable and powerful, the more expensive it is.

Grind in the ID, buy skills from the shop, get stronger, grind higher level IDs, get even more credits, you get the idea.

Also, Skill Create has to be gained from quests and special actions don't result in skills, you can still improve normally through training but you won't get the bonuses until you get the skill, afterwards, you will get an EXP bonus based on how good you were.

Anything from any universe? That sounds kinda easy to break.

Are you complaining?

Not really, I just rather point it out now before I use it in practice and you take away the system because I exploited it.

That's why you're my lab rat, break it as much as you want, the more you break the more data I will have to fix it for my next system.

Plus I'm a gamer too, exploiting the game is what we do.

That is true.

Great, now I'll leave you to the system, it will answer any questions you have.

This is gonna be awesome!

Welcome user, to the Gamer System!

So you're the game, huh?

That's right user.

Would you like to start character creation?

Sure, can you tell me what world I'm going to first?

The first world on the list is: Highschool DxD

It is a world that has a high rate of successful users as a starting world but also has a high fatality rate for users with no previous knowledge.

I can imagine that, I watched the anime years ago and what little I remember is that there are a lot of incredibly OP people in that world, most of my knowledge of the plot comes from fanfiction and those are unreliable at the best of times.

Wait...Game, I can buy anything, right?

That would be correct.

Can I buy the complete Highschool Dxd series?

Yes.

However, given that it is your starter world its price as future knowledge of that world was set quite high.

Damn, how high?

The complete Highschool Dxd series is currently set as: 1 million credits.

I take it that's a lot?

Items in the same price range include: the 7 Dragon Balls, Yamato(DMC), and 1 Resurrection Token(Self).

Given that the dragon balls can grant immortality and Yamato can supposedly cut through anything I'll take it as a yes. By the way, what is that Self besides de resurrection token?

Certain Items, usually special consumables, have tags next to them that dictate who they can be used on.

A Resurrection Token(Self) costs 1 million credits and can revive the user instantly no matter how they died, a Resurrection Token(Other) costs 10 thousand credits and can revive anyone else but has no effect on the user.

Certain items might be cheaper when usable by the player while others are cheaper when usable by other people.

I see, let's move on with character creation then.

Of course.

Please, design your appearance.

Ah, character creators, my old nemesis.

The reason I usually went with the standard is that I could never make anything that didn't look like a mutant abomination, hey game, can I import a preset from my memory.

Certainly.

I already know who to pick, I smile as the faceless avatar before me changes, golden hair slightly covering his eyes, a noble and handsome face taking shape and crimison, almost inhuman, eyes shining with what seemed to be endless confidence and amusement.

Never arrogance, arrogance is for those who don't have the power to back it up.

As the perfect, golden proportioned body shapes itself I smirk, he might have been a villain in Stay Night but damn if he didn't look badass as he effortlessly pushed back the heroes.

Gilgamesh, The King Of Heroes.

And now I look just like him, I almost feel proud, just imagining myself being just as badass as him is making me shiver with excitement.

That excitement almost immediately vanishes as I'm deaged, my toned muscles disappearing as I shrink.

Hey game, what gives!?

You are set to start as a child, 11 years old to be specific.

You will have that body as you grow older as you increase your stats.

Why do I have to start as a little kid?

The creator decided it this way.

According to him, it is to test the aging features.

Well, as long as I get my Gilgamesh body.

Great, now, your name.

Akira Yukikaze.

I always sucked at naming things, that's why I had a list of names prepared for any character I might have to name. Plus most of Highschool Dxd takes place in Kuoh, having a Japanese name should help me blend in.

Then again, Gil doesn't exactly look Japanese but I'm not exactly willing to give up on it, worse case scenario I'll just chalk it up to having foreign blood in the family or something.

The only race currently available is human so we can skip that.

[Human]

Humans are your run-of-the-mill race in almost any setting, they don't have particularly long lifespans or special skills but they are known to be very adaptive and learn things much faster than the long-lived races.

[ID Create/Escape](Active)[Lvl:1(0.00%)]

Creates an alternative plane of reality where the user can grind.

Cannot be used while in combat.

IDs Available[Empty, Zombie]

A bit more detailed than I expected but everything seems to be there, by the way, what are tiers?

Tiers are ranks in the scale of power.

The higher the tier, the greater the multiplier that is gained above all stats.

Tiers

Mortal-x1

Elite-x2

Grandmaster-x4

Champion-x6

Ultimate-x8

Divine-x10

They give a more accurate measure of power, two people can have the exact same level but if one is a tier higher, be it because of skills, weapons or even being strengthened while on a particular battlefield, that person will always be stronger.

That doesn't mean that they will always win, tiers only factor power, strategy and allies are variables that tiers don't take into account, but it does mean that in raw power they will be considerably stronger.

Is there anything else or can we start the game?

One more thing.

One of the new features is the background generator, instead of just appearing out of thin air, a feature that more often than not gets the users arrested and interrogated or dissected long before they can become strong, you get a background.

You will awaken at the start of the game and will receive all the memories of your background, you will also receive one free perk and skills relevant to your background.

It will be chosen at random.

Sure, the free perk sounds neat.

Rolling background...

I wake up suddenly, for a moment I wonder if it had been some crazy dream before I notice something, this is definitely not my bedroom.

Looking around I notice that I'm in what seems to be military barracks, only it looks almost medieval, there were things that were clearly modern like sinks and even computers but the furniture and the overall design of the room reminds me of a medieval castle.

Suddenly, I gasp as I feel an agonizing spike of pain, before I can even react it is gone, memories flash past my eyes even as a little blue box of text appears before me.

[Background]

You are Akira Yukikaze, son of a Japanese exorcist and a Mesopotamian holy maiden. Your father, Shiro Yukikaze, was a catholic exorcist that was cursed by a devil while on a mission, he was cursed to be overwhelmed by his lust and assaulted the only member of his team still alive, your mother.

He eventually broke the spell but by then it was too late, the devil had escaped and you had been conceived.

Your mother, Ishtar Aruru, didn't have an abortion as it was against her beliefs but she spent the entire pregnancy hating you, believing that you were the physical embodiment of her torment and that it was because of you that she wasn't pure and holy anymore, in actuality as she slowly gave in to the hate the holy power that she had been blessed with started to find her unworthy and as you were inside her it chose you as it's new vessel.

After you were born she sent you away to live with your father and retreated into her duties as a nun, you haven't seen her since.

Life with your father wasn't any better, he was a fanatical exorcist that saw you as a devil's spawn, you were constantly beaten, starved, had to sleep on a cold floor, and kept prisoner in your own home. The only times he was anything close to kind to you was during prayer, he forced you to learn catholicism and tried to indoctrinate you into it by any means necessary, you quickly learned that the beatings were shorter and the food somewhat more plentiful when you pretended to follow his creed and love his god, in actuality you grew to resent anything related to it.

When you were 8 your father gave you to the church so you could become an exorcist, you were not given a choice, and as much as you hated being made into a weapon for the people who made your life hell you found that you were good at it.

Very early into your training, you came to a conclusion, there were monsters in the dark that preyed on humanity like cattle and the so-called defenders of humanity were just as bad.

The supernatural respected strength, they thought that humans were free game because they were far too weak to defend themselves, someone had to step up and prove just how wrong they were.

That someone would be you.

It has been three years since then, you have been waiting for this moment for a long time, the church wouldn't let you leave so you had to escape, and in a little over two weeks you will have that chance, your first mission in the outside world after so long locked here.

Your opportunity.

As I process my backstory I can't help but be impressed, damn game, when you said tragic I expected to be an orphan or something, that's dark.

The creator wanted data on the extremes.

This was as far as I have been allowed to go without harming the user.

Is it just my background or will it have any impact from no onwards? It is strange, it feels like it happened to me but at the same time, I don't feel like it has any effect on me.

The background is designed to have an effect on the user's journey but not on the user itself unless provoked.

Unless something has to do with your background, the memories won't have any emotional imprint on you, if it does you will be made to feel the emotion that one who went through it would feel.

That way you merge with the self that went through the background and your mind is the dominant one while the other's is mostly suppressed.

It will come up eventually and you will have to deal with it.

I see, my background will only affect me if it gets triggered, I get it.

I look from the notifications to the door as I hear a knock, after a moment the door opens and a beautiful girl with orange twintails comes inside.

"Akira, are you ready? Training is about to start"

"Yeah" I say. "Let's go"

I follow her as we move through the base, my memories of both the anime and my background telling me that she's Irina, it is a little strange to see a former fictional character in the flesh right in front of me, she looks similar enough that I can tell who she is but seeing the real Irina and comparing her to the fictional one shows that the latter didn't do the former justice.

I used to be annoyed that all those protagonists of gamer fics I used to read did everything to get a harem and get laid, now I can sort of see where they were coming from.

I'm not doing the same, but I can appreciate the eye candy.

It also makes me stop and think, I pick Gil for appearance because I was average to low before and I wanted to see what looking good felt like for once, but almost every guy in the show is good-looking, I might not stand out so much after all.

It is both a relief and annoying.

I wonder what I'll do, the girls look good and I'm not above casual sex with women I just met but I never really understood relationships, beyond the pleasure of sex what was the point? Companionship? That can be easily gained without being tied to anyone.

I definitely don't want a harem, not only am I not stupid enough to try to juggle multiple girls at once, that's just asking for either losing them all or having a jealous yandere do you in while you sleep, but I also don't want the work.

Sure sex is great, but if managing a relationship with a single girl is a lot of work, imagine doing so with 5.

Eh, I'll deal with it when it happens, it shouldn't be too frequent anyway, as weird as it is I can be pretty ruthless and uncaring when it comes to violence but I can't bring myself to take advantage of a girl's feelings.

As we near the arena I get an idea, I use observe on Irinia, I won't look too deep but the basics should be stealthy.

Irina Shidou

Lvl: 5

Tier: Mortal

Race: Human

Irina Shidou is an 11-year-old exorcist in training, she became an exorcist to follow in her family's footsteps and wishes to go back to Japan and marry her childhood crush Issei.

Emotions-Excitement, determination.

Now that could be a problem, she's level 5 and I'm level 1, the difference is small but I never fought anyone before, she's stronger, and depending on how my skills work she should be more skilled too. On the other hand, I have the bonuses from the passives and the swordsmanship skill.

I can't check her attributes or skills without risking discovery but I'm going to assume that despite the level difference I'm slightly stronger, the question is, am I strong enough to overcome the difference in skill?

My question is answered when I step on the ring with her minutes after the lesson began, as soon as I grab the sword I have a feeling, it is like I have trained for hours on end with it, moves I didn't know existed suddenly appear in my head.

As we take our stances I feel instincts that I didn't have before taking over.

It is strange, I have control, I know I can make mistakes, but what I should do just appears in my head, the movement being executed before I even begin to question it.

She charges me, even for an 11-year-old it is surprisingly fast, not superhuman but enough to catch my old self off guard.

Now, it isn't that she is slow, it is that before she even made it to me the counter had already been planned, I sidestep her overhead swing and go for her throat, she blocks but I just push through.

She takes a step back and I take the chance to force her sword away, the wooden blade flying from her hands, before she can recover my sword is millimeters from her eyes.

I step back, it wasn't long, but for me, it felt like an eternity, like even the smallest mistakes could be lethal.

As the class goes on I retreat into myself, that was amazing, I know I couldn't do anything like that before yet now it felt perfectly natural.

Irina doesn't seem angry at me that she lost, there's a determination to get stronger in her eyes but no resentment, my background tells me that she arrived here a few months after I did and from the very first lesson she decided I was her rival.

Soon I get called to fight again, I don't need observe to tell me who my opponent is, Xenovia is glaring at me, a flash of memory tells me why, apparently she was the top student before I came around, jealousy will do that to someone.

As we fight I can't help but feel bad, not for her but for my old self, he spent the past three years becoming this good, when your life is as bad as his was you learn to enjoy hitting things, and then I come and not only steal his hard work but also immediately make it better just by having the system.

Xenovia is good, better than Irina, but as I let my gamer reflexes take over it shows that she's not good enough, she was almost as good as my old self, with the system she's easily outclassed.

Maybe its Gamer's Mind but I can't help but find it odd how easy it is to just let my body fight while my mind is somewhere else entirely, sure she is hardly top-tier, but I still expected to have to focus.

I also noticed that she's stronger than me, I'm faster and more skilled but in terms of raw strength she is superior, I have to dodge and parry instead of just blocking, I wonder how strong the supernatural is? The main cast was pretty strong, especially Issei and his Hax Boosted Gear but what about the average supernatural?

I was already planning to get strong anyway, maybe not top-of-the-verse strong, at least not before I did a few world jumps, but my background quest ended up just rewarding me for doing something I already was going to do.

My eyes widen slightly when Xenovia's overhead swing changes into a shoulder charge, she knocks me to the ground and prepares to bring her sword over my head, it's wooden so it won't seriously hurt me but I want that reward.

My legs lock onto her back and I use my hands to push against the floor, we change positions and before she can react to me straddling her I place my blade to her neck.

"Winner, Akira!" The Instructor says.

I waste no time getting off of her, she looks mad but I just walk back into the crowd.

As the class finishes up I take a look at my notifications.

I consider it a moment before distributing my points, I'm the lowest of the low in the scale of power in this world, saving up points won't matter if I'm dead, right now I need power, when I'm safe I'll worry about saving points.

I immediately push INT and WIS to 15, magic is not only essential to have any level of power in this world but it is magic, who wouldn't want to have more of it? I also put a point in END to get it to 15 and put the last point in DEX, better to play to your strengths than to try to be average at everything, swords deal damage mostly based on DEX so I should focus on it.

Plus there are so many cool swords in fiction that I can buy through the shop, if I ever fight Zeus I can't not pull out the Blade of Olympus from GoW.

Night fell and after dinner(and wasn't it a sad revelation when I remembered that my past self thought that this was the best food he ever ate when I can tell that it is bland at best) everyone went to sleep.

Well, everyone except me, I asked the game and it told me that due to Gamer's Mind and Gamer's Body I don't need sleep anymore, so I did what any gamer would.

I grinded.

Opening the ID I see a desolated cityscape, wreckages of cars, and random fires everywhere, if the crushed police vehicle I see is any indication this place is based on Raccoon City from Resident Evil.

I wonder, will all IDs be based on other worlds?

I shake my head and grab a sharp piece of wreckage, I have unfortunately not been able to get my hands on a proper sword given that the training ones are checked(also made of wood, not exactly zombie killing superweapons) and that I wasn't given any starter equipment besides the clothes my old self gained from the church.

I start walking and it doesn't take long to run into the first zombie, I have the feeling that if I didn't have Gamer's Mind I would have reacted much more strongly, there are no graphics here, it looks exactly like a decayed walking corpse would.

Thankfully it is slow, I don't have ranged weapons or spells yet, and dealing with hordes of runner infected with a metal pipe would have been hard.

I observe it.

Apparently, it had friends, I look towards where I hear a few groans and I see more of them, the first dies when I swing with all my STR and its head flies off its shoulders, the second does when I push him towards one of the cars and smash its head with the door.

I spit out and take a moment to check the wound, it doesn't look too bad, and its already closing but it does point something out to me, Gamer's Body is a double-edged sword, as long as I have HP not even decapitation will kill me, on the other hand, with my HP as low as it is even injuries that should have been annoying at best can very easily be fatal.

There's an easy fix for that though.

I do what gamers do best, for the next few hours I grind, after a few dozen of them my pipe breaks but by then I have already found a better weapon, the replica sword bought from the shop is nowhere near as good as an actual steel longsword but it does the trick.

It takes me three hours but I finally manage to reach level 10.

I noticed that I had no way to level CHA, I wonder if I just haven't figured out how or if it can only be leveled with points, how does one train charisma anyway?

I also check my skills to see how their leveling is going, I have found that leveling most skills doesn't actually make them stronger, it works on a mastery system, for example my Swordsmanship(Apprentice) skill gives me a 20% bonus to my DEX, just leveling it doesn't increase the bonus, I have to take it to level 99, where it will evolve into Swordsmanship(Adept) and give me a better bonus.

[Swordsmanship](Aprentice)[Lvl:5(34.00%)]

You are trained in the use of the blade with lethal efficiency.

20% Increase in Damage with any sword

20% Increase in DEX while wielding any sword

Warning: Bonus does not apply twice when using two swords, DEX penalty when using two weapons without the [Dual Wielding] Skill does.

Warning: Using a two-handed sword in one hand without the [One-Handed Grip] Perk will cause a penalty.

[Physical Conditioning](Aprentice)[Lvl:5(10.00%)]

Your body is trained, will it be trained to perfection? That's up to you.

20% Increase in all physical stats

[Mental Conditioning](Apprentice)[Lvl:4(80.00%)]

Your mind is sharper than any blade.

20% Increase in all mental status

I have yet to find a way to use my Holy Affinity skill so it hasn't gained any EXP, maybe I'll have to get my hands on a holy weapon or learn to cast holy spells to level it.

Speaking of spells.

Skill Gained

[Light Magic](Novice)[Lvl:1(0.00%)]

Light magic is a type of magic normally used by angels, both pure and fallen angels use different subsets of this branch of magic, yours is neutral, having none of the bonuses of pure or corrupted light.

Gains the ability to manipulate light using mana.

Can create weapons made of hard light.

Can create explosive projectiles made of hard light.

Damage: (INTxMP)/4

Cost: MPx4

I can't help but feel excited as a spear of light appears in my hand, magic, real magic, I can't tell how many times I dreamed of having magic, and now it's mine.

I see another few zombies coming and with barely a thought the spear shines brighter, it flies towards them almost faster than I can track, and as soon as it hits the first one an explosion of light engulfs them all.

I laugh out loud when nothing remains of them, I know that they are weak and even the weakest of supernaturals could probably shrug off a hit like that but seeing them all just vanish like that makes me feel unstoppable.

Of course, it is then that I'm caught by surprise, a zombie manages to bite me and while a simple flick of the wrist sees his head severed by a light blade the notification tells me how screwed I am.

END Check: Failed

Negative Status Applied: Infected

[Infected]

You will slowly lose Max HP for the next three hours, once it reaches zero you will die, and soon after you will rise as a zombie.

Fuck!

Game! How do I get rid of it!?

Negative status effects can be removed through certain spells, items, or by sleeping.

Certain status effects will fade with time while others get worse.

Okay, I can handle this. I check the clock and see that I still have about two hours before I have to start my day.

I quickly finish off the last few zombies, my MP is nearly empty and it isn't a pleasant feeling but I'll deal with it later, once I'm done a quickly leave the ID and appear back in my room.

I hit the bed and with a single thought, I fall asleep.

I'm sure none of you were expecting this.

First things first, why am I writing a DxD gamer fic? Honestly, I love gamer fics and have been in a DxD fanfic mood recently, I just really wanted to write something like this.

No, this will not replace Purpose, I just haven't updated it yet because I had a lot of college work to do, I decided that I wasn't going to spend what little free time I had writing it, I want that story to be my best one yet and that wouldn't happen if I wrote it while tired and not in the mood.

This will be somewhat like Megalomania, it is a wish-fulfillment power fantasy, it will be much better because my skills have improved a lot since then but the idea is similar.

For those who decide to give it a chance, I hope you'll have just as much fun reading it as I'm having writing it, for those who don't Purpose should start being updated again soon, I'm almost done with college work and shouldn't have that much for the near future.

This will have some crossover elements(mainly through the shop, items, and skills, not characters), especially when it comes to Fate, but it is still a DxD fic, and while I mentioned World Jumps that won't happen for a long time if at all.

Akira will be OP, even with all the Hax going around anyone with the Gamer could surpass the main cast even if they started along with canon, he has 6 years before it starts. I did that both because I wanted him to have some infamy amongst the supernatural and because I wanted to give him some high-level toys to play with without just letting him get them from the start.

How OP? I can tell you that he won't be top of the verse by the time canon starts, not even close, my idea to prevent him from just killing everything with a look is advancement quests, at certain levels, he will be level locked and his stats will be hard-capped until he completes them, they will be extremely difficult and will force him to find other means to get stronger than just power leveling, like different skills and better items.

There won't be a harem, I really don't like harems, that whole speech about casual sex and relationships really shows both mine and Akira's views on relationships, he might hook up with a few people(not right now, he's 11) but no serious relationships and certainly no relationships with multiple girls at the same time.

What I'm going for with Akira is someone who is confident, somewhat quick to anger but that prefers to resolve issues without violence if possible, it is not that he is a pacifist, it is that he finds it that better solutions are often achieved with words than with violence. He likes helping people but doesn't feel he has to, his main goal is to show the supernatural that humans aren't cattle that they can abuse as they see fit, he really doesn't like anything that has to do with the church(partly because of his background affecting him, partly because of his overall negative opinions on gods and religion in general from his previous life) or pure angels, though he mostly doesn't have problems with fallen and he really hates arrogant people (his belief is that unless you have the strength to back it up, confidence is just arrogance) and people who hurt others for no reason, he is fiercely protective of the people he deems his and is stubborn to a fault.

Anyway, that's about it, reviews are appreciated and see you next time.
