"Apollo," He leaned back as she leaned closer to his face, the distance between the two of them quickly becoming uncomfortable.
"Yes?" She leaned in closer, her blue eyes scrunching up in concentration as the two of them heard their boss for her to leave him alone.
"Has anyone ever told you that your poker face sucks?"
…Huh?
"…What?"
"Yeah!" Athena straightened back up with a grin," It's way too easy to make you squirm, at least Mr. Wright has a good poker face!" She motioned towards Mr. Wright with a dramatic flair, not noticing the way their boss silently smiled into his hand," But yours just sucks!"
Apollo stared at Athena with squinted eyes, his face showing his overall displeasure of his poker face being compared to their boss." Athena," He started slowly," You do know that Mr. Wright has been an undefeated poker champ for the past seven years right…?" That made her stop in her tracks, her smile being replaced with a confused look as she turned around to question the man himself.
He cleared his throat as he stopped smiling into his hand," Ah, yes, I was the poker champion for some years before I repassed the bar exam. Although I don't know when you saw it, I haven't used it for almost a year now." Apollo hummed in agreement; he hadn't seen his boss use his poker face ever since he proved that Klavier framed Mr. Wright for forging evidence.
"Yes, you have!" Athena crossed her arms across her chest while trying to scrunch up her face a certain way," Its when you cross your arms and make this weird face!" The men snorted into their hands at the sight of Athena trying to mimic Mr. Wrights 'poker face' which was his usual expression that he made," …What's so funny?"
"Nothing, just," Apollo cleared his throat as he exchanged smiles with Mr. Wright," That's not his poker face Athena, that's just his regular face."
"No way!" She gaped at the two of them, it looked like she was questioning her entire existence.
"Yeah," Athena turned onto her heel to look at him, Mr. Wright cleared his throat as he let his shoulders slump. His eyes were half-lidded and that annoying smirk that Apollo had come to have a mild hatred for appeared on his face," This is the poker face that I used to use during games," Even the tone of his voice changed. Instead of the confident and gentle tone that he usually had, his tone was more reserved but had a hint of something that made it sound like he knew something you didn't.
Taking a deep breath, Mr. Wright dropped his poker face, straightened up his shoulders, and gave Athena a bright smile, "Anyway, you shouldn't be nagging Apollo about his poker face, yours is just as bad." Apollo snickered with Mr. Wright as Athena started to protest that although her poker face wasn't good, hers was still better than Apollos. That got another laugh from their boss.
"No no, your poker face sucks just as much as Apollos, if not more." Apollo let himself indulge on his childish side just long enough for him to lean over and quietly said 'Ha' in a semi-mocking manner.
"No! I'll prove that I have a better poker face than Apollo!"
And that was how they found themselves standing on the rooftop of their office building, with a stopwatch and Athena with a mouth full of water. Her mouth was so full, that if she didn't keep a straight face, the water would come pouring out.
"You know, they told me that it was going to be weird working with you. And even though I prepared myself, I never thought I would be doing something like this."
"That's what I tell myself every day Apollo, anyways, this will be easy, she's around Trucy's age and she laughs at weird stuff anyway." Apollo hummed in agreement as Mr. Wright announced that he was starting the timer. And with that, he just watched as Mr. Wright walked up to the youngest member of their small agency and wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
"Look at the horizon Athena, " He waved his hand in front of the two of them as he turned her to the bright and radiant sunset, he just got a weird look from the others but they looked when he gave them his 'dad look'," Look at how beautiful nature can be, how small we are in the great matter of things," He directed her to look at a bunch of birds that were on the powerlines," Now look at all thoth chicken." The way he referenced the nearly ancient video with the lisp, mocking voice, and all made her crack.
Apollo grimaced as he took a step away from the pair, the water spraying all over the cement and dribbling down her chin as she cackled at the ancient reference. Apollo, who didn't understand why she started cracking up, glanced at Mr. Wright, who merely shrugged his shoulders in a way that told him that he didn't understand it either.
"D-damn it!" She coughed as she tried to get the water out of her nose," I can't believe that made me crack, how long did it take?"
"Uh…30 seconds." Apollo tried to hide the smile that was on his face, but it still came out in the happy tone of his voice.
"Geez! Let's see how long you last!"
He was really starting to wonder about his sanity and why he was even letting the younger lawyer mess with him like that.
"Just accept it, Apollo," Mr. Wright gave a small sigh," You'll get used to it eventually."
He didn't want to get used to it, he just wanted to have a normal workday as a lawyer.
"Just pretend that you're staring down the person that made you lose your job and that you're doing everything you can to not strangle them," He rose an eyebrow at that, making his boss give him an innocent look at that," What? That's what I used to do, well kinda…you know what I mean, just last longer than 30 seconds." Without waiting for a nod of approval, he started the timer.
"Alright, Apollo you're like 24, right?" He nodded at that, a smile appeared on Mr. Wrights face," Great, this should be easy, here just say this…" He just watched with a raised eyebrow as Mr. Wright leaned over to Athena and whispered something into her ear. He would have frowned when Athena started giggling if he were able to.
"Are you sure?"
"Positive, he's a 2003 baby, they always laugh at weird stuff."
Alright, he was almost offended at that.
He just watched as Athena bounded up to him, trying to channel his 'staring down the person that made you lose your job and that you're doing everything you can to not strangle them' like Mr. Wright said.
Now that he thinks about it…
Wasn't that Mr. Gavin?
If Mr. Wright really did that whenever he did his poker face, that would explain a lot…
"…And I was just sitting there," He finally came back to reality as Athena wrapped his arm around his shoulder while talking. Maybe he should be paying more attention.
"Barbeque sauce on my titties."
Water sprayed onto the cement as Apollo started cackling at that. It was such an ancient video that he first saw in middle school. He continued laughing and sputtering out the water as memories of Clay saying the exact same thing to make him laugh popped up. Just the fact that he heard that almost as soon as he came out of this thinking made him laugh even more.
"Told you that would make him laugh, anyways, Athena, you are the official loser today, he lasted 35 seconds." Her groan of annoyance only made him laugh harder.
It took him a couple of minutes for him to calm down and stop laughing, holding his side as he took a deep breath," God, "He cleared his throat," It has been so long since I laughed like that. I can't believe that made me laugh." Mr. Wright chuckled at that.
"If it makes you feel better, I laughed for like 10 minutes when I first saw it back in college." He started chuckling as he remembered the original video again.
"Alright guys, now that we established who has the worst poker face, let's get back to work, I already have the pictures to remember this. "
Pictures?
"Wait! It's your turn!" Both he and Mr. Wright turned around to give her a weird look.
"Athena…you want to see how long Mr. Wright, an undefeated poker champion, can last?"
"Yeah!"
And that was how, they found themselves, trying to make Mr. Wright laugh for almost 15 minutes. Although they could see the amusement in his eyes, they just couldn't make him smile, forget trying to make him laugh. He just stood there patiently as his younger counterparts tried their best to laugh, bringing up and reenact some old internet videos that usually would make him crack up.
"Athena," Apollo watched with a raised eyebrow as Athena kept on trying to make him laugh," I don't think we're going to make him laugh, it's already been 15 minutes and I- "Apollo cut himself off as he scrunched up his nose in disgust. The disgusting smell of a diesel engine somehow managed to get up there.
"Ugh, what's that smell? It stinks."
"Nick!" They all jumped as a man ran out on the rooftop in a hurry. He had short, light brown hair with a small goatee on his chin. "You gotta help me, man!"
Oddly enough that made their boss start laughing really hard.
"Pftt! Damn it Larry!" He let out a loud and boisterous belly laugh as he leaned on his knees, gasping and spitting out the water, turning bright red from laughing so hard," W-when something smells," He bent over and started laughing even harder," I-it's usually the Butz!"
…What?
"I didn't even do anything!" That only made Mr. Wright laugh even harder.
He held onto his sides as he leaned against Larry. He was laughing so hard, it eventually made Larry start laughing and the two of them collapsed with laughter as Apollo and Athena just watched confusedly.
"Hahaha, ow-ow my side," Mr. Wright snorted again," D-damnit Larry, I was doing good until you came here." Larry snickered.
"Sorry man, but uh…"
"Just spit it out."
"…Guess who has two thumbs and got accused of murder again?" Mr. Wright groaned loudly.
"Again?"
"Yeah, like you said, when something smells, it's usually the Butz."
And that made them start laughing all over again.
Athena quietly leaned over to Apollo and whispered," What's going on?"
"I have no idea."
There were times where he started to question his decision to work with Mr. Wright.
