Prologue
Puck stopped his drumming for a brief moment and grinned at Sabrina.
"I hear they have a lot of plastic surgeons in New York City. If I were you I'd make an appointment for that face as soon as you get there," he quipped.
Sabrina scowled and shook a fist at him. "Keep it up, stinkpot, and you're going to need a plastic surgeon yourself."
Puck winked. "No need to get all mushy on me, Grimm."
Helene giggled at Puck's words. Despite not ever meeting the fictional character, he was her favorite in the whole series, being hilarious, smart, and according to sources, cute, after showering. That part was a little gross, but being four thousand something years old and a prankster prince made you hate being clean. Disgusting. But then again, when he and Sabrina got married he was clean and not stinky, so that's good.
She flipped the page, having continued reading Sisters Grimm: The Everafter War. Helene loved the series, despite it having been written for nine to eleven-year-olds, and her own age of fourteen. Several minutes later she finished the book, setting it down on my table just as a loud bang shattered the window. She jerked up into a sitting position, the only noise being the creaking of her bed and stomping down our hallway. As her younger sister, Katerina, rushed into their shared room she lunged at Helene, wrapping her arms around the older girl's torso.
"What was that?" she mumbled into the sweater, slightly looking up at Helene's face. One of her arms went around Kate's shoulders, the other providing support on the bed so she wouldn't tip over.
"I... don't know." Helene admitted begrudgingly, "But we'll be fine. Where are Mama and Papa?"
"They left early, remember?" she recalled with a shake in her voice. "Lena, I'm scared."
"Don't worry, it's probably nothing," I patted her back comfortingly despite worry clouding my mind. I was glad she couldn't see my face. After taking a few deep breaths she realized that Kate could've been seriously hurt, seeing as the living room had windows all over, and they were close to the couch, where Kate sat to watch TV. Helene held Kate at arms' length, "Are you hurt?"
"No," she replied quickly, "The windows are okay there, too."
"Then we should probably go there," Helene realized and hurriedly led her sister out of the room, absent-mindedly grabbing her kindle and phone, plus the wires for both. She was not coming back into that room until someone told her what was going on.
However, as soon as they stepped into the living room the world shifted. Kate grabbed on to Helene for dear life, shrieking, and Helene made no noise other than a sharp exhale. Something was happening to them, something that prevented them from moving.
She did not like it.
