It was a cool spring day in the town of Montpelier. The leaves on the tree's were slowly starting to grow back, and the cool wind was blowing. In the middle of the small forest was were all the animals gathered to see the birth of Deerboy. Josh, Deerboy's father couldn't look and instead faced the direction were trouble would soon come in the future. He turned to look at the two proud fawns. "Sorry, I missed it. I never was a buck who could watch an animal being born. Cause it gave me the goosebumps everytime."
"It's all good. I get it, ask Mr. Wolf." Deerboy's mother said. Glancing at him.
He sat next to his mate with his pup sitting next to him. He was pretty stunned and surprised. But glad he witnessed a beautiful thing. "So, what's gonna be the name of the two adorable fawns, Mr. Deer?" Mr. Wolf asked. Josh peered over and immediately came up with the perfect name. "Brian and Lexi. But nickname wise, for Brian. I say Deerboy." He said.
"I love it." Deerboy's mother said. Brian and Lexi cuddled up close with their mother.
And that's how it's been.
The sun peeked over the Vermont hills. Another perfect chill and calm morning. Brian laid curled up in bed, sleeping smoothly, a few grunts came out of him, but that was all interrupted by the sound of clock's chiming. A mixture of a grandfather clocks, bells, and old clocks going off together at once. Brian woke up, his heart was racing as he didn't know what the noise was. He peered over at his Dark Side of the Moon clock, as he noticed the time.
"Oh, that's what that is" He said, turning it off. "Well, better start the day." He walked into the kitchen and made one of his favorite meals. A acorn salad/w blueberries. He walked to the table were Lexi was just about done eating. "Morning, bro." She said. "Morning, Lexi." Brian replied. She got up to wash her dish, then left back to her room. She walked back out and sat on the couch.
Afterwards, Brian washed up his dish and hoped in and out of the shower. He tossed on a blue polo shirt, and black jeans. He slipped on his favorite blue collar, and walked to the door. He leaned down and grabbed his checkered flag Vans, then slipped those on. He walked out the door and took a deep breath in, smelling the fresh morning air, before grabbing the newspaper.
"Bye sis, I'll call ya if I get the job!" he said. "Alright, love ya." Lexi said. Brian walked over to his clean orange and white 73' classic Cadillac Ambulance, and drove off to the hospital. Arriving, he pulled into the parking garage. He parked close to entrance, next to a green Toyota Tacoma.
He slowly stepped out and burred. The garage was pretty cold, it felt like fifteen degrees in there. He reached in his pocket and pulled out his phone. It was six-twenty-two in morning, and forty five degrees. He slipped his phone back in his pocket and walked out. Passing the doctor office building, approaching the main hospital building.
Brian took a deep breath in, and out, as he walked inside. He walked over to the receptionist desk, "Excuse me" he politely said, "I was wondering where the manager's office is." The receptionist looked up. "You must Brian. Deerboy right?" She said. "Yes." he said. "Take the elevator to the 20th floor, and take a right down the hall" She said. "Thank you." Brian thanked, leaving towards the elevator.
"You look very handsome and cute by the way!" She yelled.
"Thanks" he yelled back getting in the elevator, "I get that from a lot of animals, not just the doe's."
After arriving, he let out a sigh as he approached the manager's office. He was so apprehensive, that he kept tugging on his collar, letting sweat run down the fur of his neck. He gulped and opened the door. "Hello, is there anybody in here?" He spoke anxiously. He walked in a little closer, which revealed the manager who was writing something down. Brian walked up to the table, and waved his hand in front of the managers face.
"Hello?" He spoke. The manager looked up. "How may I help you?" He said. "Hi, I'm Brian, the guy who applied to be a paramedic." He said, sliding the filled out form in front of him. "Oh, yes, okay. Well, everything checks out, so you're hired. Now to get to the medic dock, you wanna take the elevator to the ground level. Take a right past the emergency room check in and keep walking until you see two sliding doors, take a walk through there and that's were you'll find the medic dock. Your ambulance is the 1994 Dodge, unit 16. Here's your uniform and keys, good luck."
He walked out and into the bathroom to put on his uniform. He took a look in the mirror. "Huh, I actually look pretty handsome with this REMSA outfit on" He walked to the elevator and left. Once arriving at the ground level, he walked down the hall, until he bumped into someone.
"Oh, sorry ma'am." He said. "That's all good. I've ran into a few doctor's before." The Doe said. Brian gulped. "Hi, I'm Brian. Or Deerboy" The Doe blushed, "I'm Alyssa. I'm a lab researcher here. You must be a paramedic, cause of the uniform."
"Huh, oh yeah" He replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I was gonna walk there anyway, wanna walk with me?" she asked, holding out her hand. Inside of Brian's mind, he could feel the shivers running up and down his spine. "Sure." He said, grabbing her hand. "You know, you remind me of someone I knew from my fawn hood." she said.
"I do?" Brian replied. "Yeah, but I just don't know who. So anyway, are you new here?" she asked. "Yeah, I just joined today." He replied. The two arrived at the medic dock. "Alright, my ambulance is number sixteen and is the 94' Dodge, which is right here." He took a moment to look it over and eventually hoped inside. "Comfortable seats, oh man. I could just live here." Alyssa asked, "Is it ok if I ride with you? I say that because I kinda like you."
Brian blushed for a second, "Ok. Sure, hop in." He said, "Allow me to get the door." He walked around the ambulance and opened the door, allowing his new mate to get in. "Such a gentleman, one of the nicest bucks I've ever met" she said. Brian hoped back in and buckled up, sat up and waited. Minutes went by, and no call. He watched as other ambulances departed, and arrived with patients.
"You wanna head over to Sam's Salad Bar?" Brian asked. Alyssa gasped, "I love that place. They have the best acorn salad's."
"I love acorn salad's." he excitedly said, "Especially with..."
"Blueberries!" the two spoke at the same time. They laughed. Brian then let out a couple of grunts. He quickly covered his mouth. "Sorry." He said, "I guess I got to excited."
Alyssa laughed, "No need to be, you're grunts are so cute. I mean I bleat when I get over excited too!" she said as she let out a short bleat.
"Yeah." Brian chuckled, as he started up the ambulance, and began backing out. On the way, He kept panning back and fourth from the radio to the road, the radio and back to the road. He didn't wanna miss a call, so he turned up the volume on it. Alyssa blew her hair back and took off her protective goggles. "Hey Deerboy?" She asked. "Yeah?" He replied. "Do you have a glasses cleaner in here?"
"Yeah, I do believe some ambulances come with cleaners for that." He said, rubbishing through the box. "Ah, here we go, here you are."
She took it and started to wipe and disinfect her goggles. She tucked the glasses cleaner in her lab coat pocket, then looked at him. "Do you mind if I keep the glasses cleaner?"
"Sure, I could always get a new one." Brian said.
He couldn't stop looking at her, he knew he was in love, but he was too afraid to ask if she would go on a date with him. He took a glance at her, it's like he could feel the same thing going through her head. He could see the blushing in her face. He just kept to himself, trying to hold back what he had to say, keeping his eyes on the road.
Arriving at Sam's. Brian pulled off to the side and walked over to let Alyssa out. Once everything was done, he locked up the truck and headed inside. The restaurant wasn't that busy, probably cause it was Thursday, and usually the place wasn't really busy. He walked up to the counter. "Waitress!" He said. A tiger stepped out from the back. "Hello, welcome to Sam's Salad Bar, what can I get you EMT'S today." Alyssa laughed, "Oh, sorry miss, I'm a lab researcher. I'm just here with my friend."
"Oh, ok. But you two work at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center, right?" She asked.
"Correct!" Brian said. "Ok. You know you two look like the sweetest couple. A buck and his doe." She said, grabbing her pen, "So what can I get ya?"
"Two of your finest acorn salad's with extra blueberries." He told her.
"All right." The waitress said, "anything to drink?" Brian looked at Alyssa. She shrugged. "I guess two waters. Deer park national spring water." The waitress wrote down in her book then left. "I didn't know you like deer park water." Alyssa said. "Are you kidding?" he said, "It's been my favorite water since I was five."
"I didn't know we had anything in common. Same taste of foods and drinks." She said.
"I had no idea neither." he said.
"Wait, I remember who you are. You're Brian, that buck who was really shy to see me. You hid behind that rock and we played tag, always picked berries together." She said.
Something clicked. "Wait, now I remember too, you scared me with your giggling." Brian said.
"Yeah I did." She said, before laughing. "But what confused me was, why? Why did you laugh?" Brian asked.
"Because that's just how I sometimes tell someone I like them. Plus I was only one. And still you're quite amusing." She said, as she hugged him.
Brian laughed. "Yeah. I almost forgot to call Lexi. I was supposed to tell her I got the job. She might already be at her job interview." he said. The call went to voicemail. He decided to text her. About a minute later she replied. "That's great news, bro!"
As soon as Brian was about to reply, his radio went off. "Unit 16, we have a code 3. A TC (Traffic collision) happened off of Green Mountain Way." Dispatch alerted. He immediately ran out. "Dispatch, this is unit 16, I'm responding." He said. Alyssa quickly followed behind, jumping in. "Location is Green Mountain Way, I'll set that on the GPS." He quickly hit the gas. Rushing as fast as he could.
