12:31 pm
Steve watched as Natasha successfully hacked into HYDRA's database.
The first thing he spotted was one of the "soldiers".
There was a list of soldiers used in HYDRA, and one caught his eye. She looked to be young, maybe only fifteen or sixteen.
She had brown hair, hung down to her shoulders, and green eyes. What really caught his eye was the scar on her cheek. Almost a perfect x.
"Can you get information on this one?" Steve asked, tapping the girl's photo.
Natasha nodded and tapped a few buttons.
Soldier
Daughter of James Buchanan Barnes
Born into HYDRA
Refuses to fight unless forced
Steve's heart dropped in his chest.
Daughter. Of his best friend. His dead best friend.
"Can we… can we get her? Can we get her out of there?" Steve asked, looking over at Natasha. A small smile played on her face and she nodded.
7:47 pm
The girl was safe, and currently in Steve's apartment. With the help of Natasha, the two had gotten the girl out of there pretty fast. HYDRA didn't even realize that they were there, and the girl didn't put up much of a fight.
The girl didn't act dangerous when the two got her, looking more scared than anything. She hadn't said a word since the two had taken her from HYDRA. Now she was sitting on the couch of Steve's apartment, looking up at Steve, who was looking at her, somewhat in awe.
She looked like Bucky.
Not much alike, but the resemblance was still there, especially to Steve.
Natasha had left the apartment only minutes before to see if she could find any more information on the girl.
"I'm Steve Rogers," Steve introduced with a small smile despite his inner feelings, "do you have a name?" he asked her.
The girl shook her head. He'd have to change that. What kind of poor child didn't have a name? One who grew up in a place like HYDRA, apparently.
Steve put his hand out for her to shake. Her eyes flicked from his hand to his face, looking somewhat wary and confused.
"I'm not gonna hurt you, kid." He murmured, before taking his phone out of his pocket once it buzzed. A text from Natasha.
Doesn't look like she has a name. Born sometime in May, 1968. Her dad is James Buchanan Barnes and I can't find out who her mom is. She's been fifteen since 1983. I'm not sure when whatever they put in her will wear off, but she'll age eventually. Apparently she's been trained by HYDRA since 1980. She was only made to be an exact copy of The Winter Soldier; whoever that is we'll figure it out. She was born in HYDRA, this will be the first time she's ever been out of their control.
Steve quickly responded and put his phone down, running his hands down his face, noticing the girl's flinch when he made the sudden movement.
Steve sat down next to the girl and placed a gentle hand on her knee, feeling her stiffen, "you're safe here, kid. Nobody's gonna hurt you, I promise." He reassured her.
"Steve?" Is all the girl answered with in a quiet voice, looking up at him like a lost puppy.
He nodded, "that's me," he smiled lightly.
The girl pointed to herself, "soldier."
Steve shook his head, "no, kid, you're not a soldier anymore."
"Why?" she asked. She seemed to be struggling to speak in english, and she had a Russian accent.
"Because you're too young to be fighting in a bad place." Steve looked the girl over, and noticed she seemed to be cradling one of her arms close to herself.
"Can I see your arm?" He asked, pointing to her arm lightly. She shook her head and drew her arm closer to herself.
"Why not?" He asked again, looking up at her, catching the fear in her eyes.
"Hurt me," she pointed to him.
"I'm not gonna hurt you, kid. Just let me see your arm." The girl slowly took off her leather jacket, and since she was only wearing a tank top underneath he saw her arm.
It was clearly broken. Her elbow was sticking out in the wrong direction and it was swollen.
"How did that happen?" He asked calmly, though inside he was panicking as he reached for his keys. He didn't know what else was wrong with her, he should've gotten her checked out the second he had her safe, not almost an hour later.
The girl just shook her head, watching him in fear when he stood up.
"Cmon, we're gonna go see my friend and he's gonna help you, okay?" Steve asked.
"Hurt me?" The girl asked.
"No, he's not gonna hurt you, I promise." He reassured the girl.
8:21 pm
Tony was checking the girl out, her vitals, getting her x-rayed, and basically checking everything he could to see if anything was wrong with her.
"Does your mysterious daughter have a name?" Tony asked as he ran a finger down the girl's arm, nodding to himself.
"She's not my daughter. And no, she doesn't." Steve studied the girl in the chair. The stiff way she held herself, the small winces of pain every so often, and the obvious fear in her eyes.
"Alright, I'm just gonna take a blood test," Tony picked up a needle.
The girl's eyes widened and she shook her head, looking over at Steve as if he could help her.
"He's just checking your blood, he's not gonna hurt you." Steve put a hand on her shoulder.
The girl took deep breaths as she shook her head, clearly hyperventilating.
"Hey, woah kid it's alright," Steve kneeled down in front of her, "hey, it's alright." he looked over at Tony, who put the needle back down.
"I can do it another time, I'm gonna go see her x-ray," Tony basically strutted from the room.
The girl looked like she was about to cry, her jaw quivering as she watched Tony leave.
"Nobody's gonna hurt you, alright? We just have to wait for Tony to tell us what's wrong with you and then we can go back home." He straightened up, staying eye level with the girl until she calmed down.
"Home?" The girl asked quietly, looking up at Steve, her broken arm still against her chest.
"My apartment, your new home. I'm gonna take care of you, nobody's gonna hurt you." Steve was never one for thinking about having kids. Not with being an Avenger, and then before the war being in love with Bucky. But this girl, the second he laid eyes on her he felt bad for her. She looked so helpless and terrified. She also needed a name, and soon.
"What about Brianna, does that sound alright?" Steve asked the girl.
"Brianna?" The girl tilted her head to the side.
"Yeah, you. Your name. Brianna." Steve pointed to the girl, using the same tone you would on a hurt animal.
The girl nodded, "okay." is all she said in response, looking back up at him.
Tony walked back into the room, "yeah, her elbow's broken. Can't find anything else wrong with her, though it looks like she's way older than fifteen." He handed Steve the X-ray.
Damn it was very broken.
"So I'll just put it in a cast and then you can go."
10:11 pm
Brianna got in the passenger seat of the car and hugged her knees to her chest, laying her head in her knees and huffing lightly.
Steve drove away from the tower, looking over at her, "we can go home and you can sleep alright?" he offered.
Brianna looked over at him and didn't respond, so he assumed that meant okay.
The rest of the ride was completely and utterly silent until he pulled up outside his apartment again. He got out of the car and watched as Brianna did the same. He unlocked the door and walked in, offering Brianna a small smile.
Brianna rubbed her non-casted arm nervously, looking around.
"Here," Steve went to one of the two guest rooms in his apartment and opened it, "you can stay in here, and decorate it however you want."
Brianna looked into the room before looking up at Steve, "can I stay with you?" she asked quietly.
Steve nodded, "yeah, of course you can kid," he wasn't surprised she didn't wanna be alone, "we can just stay in the living room." he shut the door again and walked over to the living room, "here." he sat down and patted the seat on the couch next to him. Brianna sat down and hugged her knees to her chest, looking straight ahead.
"Do you wanna watch a movie or something?" Steve asked, looking over at her.
"Movie?" Brianna tilted her head to the side, her eyebrows tilting in confusion.
"Yeah, a movie. Here." He turned on the tv and grabbed a disk, putting it in.
Wizard of Oz.
The last movie Steve watched with Bucky.
Brianna seemed interested in the movie, at one point moving so she was laying her head on his arm, and within a half an hour, she fell asleep.
