"Addison! Hurry up !"
Addison turned to see Bree approaching her. She took her hand and pulled it with her to the locker room.
"Bree ?!"
"The coach has an announcement for us, didn't you hear the principal's message this morning?"
"Uh... no."
Addison slept very badly these days, and this morning, for the first time in all of her schooling, she had woken up late. She had arrived just in time for the start of class, but had missed the morning announcements, and hadn't been able to see her friends until Bree literally took her hostage.
Her friend hurried to change, and Addison did the same, not really noticing the fact that the locker rooms seemed fuller than usual. She just wanted to know what made Bree so excited. She changed her jeans and blue T-shirt for her pink workout outfit (luckily she always had a spare in her locker), and ran behind her towards the entrance to the gym.
Bree stamped her foot while waiting for her, before opening the door and pulling her inside again. And luckily she was forcing her to move, because Addison would surely have frozen in front of all these people. Zombies, wolves, and humans gathered together, chatting and laughing as they waited for the last to arrive. The whole school was there, and Addison was more and more puzzled as to what was going on. Bree didn't wait another second and walked in a specific direction.
Five minutes later of elbowing, Addison and Bree arrived in front of their group of friends.
"Look who I found!" Bree exclaimed, letting go of her to go and position herself next to Bonzo, who put an arm around her.
"Addison! Where have you been?" Zed asked as he walked over to her.
She gave him a small smile, which turned a bit into a grimace as he pulled her towards him to kiss her cheek. "I woke up a little later, I missed the announcements. I was just on time for my first class."
Zed frowned, and shook his head. "You have to be more careful, we can't be the most perfect couple in Seabrook if you arrive late for class."
Addison didn't answer, just giving the smile she gave her parents when she wanted them let her be. She didn't notice the glances exchanged from Eliza, Willa and Wyatt, the latter two seemed about to intervene if Eliza hadn't put a hand on Willa's arm.
Addison finally turned away from her boyfriend, and waved her hand at the wolves.
"If someone could explain to me what's going on? Not that I'm not happy to see you all, but we're not in the same years. Wynter is in the lower class, and Zed, Willa, and Wyatt are in the upper one."
Eliza opened her mouth to answer her, when a shrill microphone sounded, making everyone wince, while the wolves blocked their ears squarely. Addison understood. If already with her human ears she was hurting, then with their ultra sensitive ears…
"One two one two, test. Can everyone hear me?"
Addison opened her mouth when she saw Mrs. Lee standing in front of them, on the platform used for the big announcements. But what was going on?
"Good. As I told you this morning, it has been decided, as a means to prevent bullying, even more since the arrival of our new students…"
The principal had to stop talking until the wolves finished howling. Addison found it hard not to laugh out loud at her nervous look. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Zed glaring at Willa, Wyatt and Wynter, as if asking them to shut up.
Even after everything that had happened during the Prawn, Zed found it difficult to come to terms with himself as a monster. He was trying at all costs to blend in with the crowd, and was fixated on being the perfect boyfriend, not realizing that Addison had fallen in love with him for who he was, and not for what he 'could be'.
Sometimes she felt like he cared more about the perfect image she gave of her rather than the real 'her'. She was changing, and he stayed the same, didn't grow, didn't mature. He still had a hard time understanding why Addison wanted to find her origins. He didn't understand that she felt isolated and that she was looking for where she could finally be herself. The wolves had taught her an important lesson in self-confidence, and she felt proud of her white hair and her differences, but she just wanted to understand why she was the way she was.
"That's why the education council decided to organize a dodge-ball day!"
A moment of silence, then the cries rang out. Addison winced at the loud volume, and the wolves didn't sound well either. She took Wynter's hand which was next to her, who turned to her and hid in her hair. Willa and Wyatt looked like they were about to yell at everyone to shut up. Their pack was in pain, and they didn't like it at all.
And Addison didn't like it either. Fortunately, she wasn't the shy type.
She brought her free hand to her mouth, and hissed loudly.
Everyone fell silent and turned to her. She glared around.
"Thank you, Addison," sighed the principal.
"Yes, thank you," Wynter whispered to her.
She patted her on the shoulder, before the young wolf let go. Willa gave her a grateful look, while Wyatt smiled at her. Addison shrugged and smiled back.
"Why did you do that ?" Zed growled.
Addison gave him a disbelieving look. Hadn't he noticed their friends' pain because of the noise? If she had been in pain, then them…
"For the wolves, of course."
She turned away before he could add anything, her eyes sad. She met Wyatt's gaze, who gave her a small smile, as Willa busied herself with glaring at her boyfriend.
"The teams will be mixed and drawn. We will also draw lots for the order of passage of the teams. At the end, the winning team will receive a trophy which will be put back into play next month."
The wolves winced. Wynter whimpered a little.
"Which will obviously not be in silver. The event will last all afternoon."
Addison smiles excitedly. She couldn't wait to play with her friends, and her competitive spirit was taking over. She hoped her friends were all with her, but she would also like to have them as an opponent. She already knew wolves were super nimble, having played with pups every time she visited their den, but she also knew she was no slouch.
She started chatting with Bree and Eliza as she waited her turn to draw a color, vibrant with energy.
There were ten teams, each of which could accommodate fifteen people. People from the same team received scarves of the same color to recognize each other.
Zed was on the pink team.
Bonzo and Wynter ended up together in the brown team.
Willa and Wyatt were separated, which made Addison sigh in relief. From experience, she knew that the two together were a strength apart. Willa was in the black team, while Wyatt was in the purple.
Eliza found herself with a few members of the computer club on the blue team.
Bree and Addison ended up together in the White team.
From a distance she saw Bucky and the Aceys together on the Red Team. Which made her cousin green with horror, for red was the color of zombies, and made Addison laugh.
In addition to these seven teams, there was the green, the amber, and the yellow.
"We won't make it easy for you, Addison!" Wyatt shouted from where his team had gathered.
She laughed. "I wouldn't have wanted it any other way!"
The team draws were quickly done. What had been designated as the team leader (of which his whole group of friends were, oddly enough. Were they that popular?) drew a number that designated a spot on the whiteboard.
The amber and black teams were starting. All the other teams went to sit on the stands so as not to be on the way. Zed tried to walk over to Addison, but a member of the football team with him held him back to talk… football.
Wynter and Wyatt each took a seat next to her, as Bree went to sit with Bonzo near a few cheer members. Eliza sat down on the step below theirs.
"How much do you bet that Willa is going to smash them?" she laughed, taking her tablet to film it all.
Wyatt shook his head and laughed too. "I'm not taking a bet that I know I'm going to lose. It would be fairer to bet how long it will take her to crush them."
Addison thought back to the day she had played with the pups and Willa used her distraction to pounce herself on her back, knocking her back, and nodded frantically, letting out a small laugh.
A whistle sounded and the small group returned their attention to the field. Willa was the first to the center of the field, and collected as many foam balls as possible, which she distributed to her teammates, before facing the opposing team. Another whistle, and the war began.
The balls went off at the speed of light, and quickly, the field emptied of players not very sporty, or who just weren't lucky. But they stayed on the sidelines and cheered their team on. Addison smiles at this sight.
She still remembered how the Zombies had been hated just because they were different, then how everyone had been afraid of wolves when they were just proud of who they were. And now everyone was playing together.
She felt a hand in hers, and turned to see Wyatt smile at her. She squeezed it, before turning back to the game. Of course he knew what she was thinking.
Wynter rested her head on her shoulder, and Addison scratched her head reflexively. Wolves were very affectionate, and liked to touch each other all the time. Something Zed really didn't like, because she always ended up covered in their scent, he said. But Addison was a loving person, and one who gave as much love as she received.
She watched Willa slaughter the opposing team, not moving from her position between the wolves, despite Zed's gaze she felt on her.
Ten minutes later, the blue and brown team stood up, as the coach noted the winners of that round. She wished Eliza and Wynter good luck, as Willa took the place of the zombie, resting her head on her knees. Addison smiled, and scratched her head too. Wyatt shifted his position to rest his own head on her shoulder, circling her waist with his arm.
Bree came in from behind, taking a surprised look at this new layout, but as Addison seemed at ease, running her fingers through Willa's hair, she said nothing and just smiled before commenting on the game in front of them.
Addison was just listening to them, not really being able to choose sides between Bonzo and Wynter, and Eliza. In the end, the brown team narrowly won, and Addison gave a small apologetic smile to her best friend, who sat down next to Willa, pulling out her tablet to this time film Zed's team against of Bucky's. Bonzo stood next to Bree, and Wynter pushed Willa a bit to gain access to one of her legs.
Addison almost felt like she was going back to the speech scene to become president. The two team leaders wanted to be the best, and threw spikes at each other in such a way that enraged each other. Their team were fed up with them, and they made sure to get them both out from the first few minutes of the game.
The girl knew she should have been sad for her boyfriend and cousin, but a lesson in humility didn't hurt. She shook her head as she saw them continue to argue. The coach finally intervened, and placed them as far as possible from each other, like elementary school children.
The game went more calmly and in a better mood without these two. Even the Aceys were having fun without Bucky's shadow above them. The pink team ended up winning, and Zed cried out in joy. He had not yet digested his loss in the presidential elections. Addison hid her face on Wyatt's neck to avoid seeing this scene, and sighed.
The wolves sensed her embarrassment and whimpered a little. Willa and Wynter rubbed their noses against her knees, in a sign of comfort, as Wyatt ran his own through her hair. Eliza and Bree exchanged a surprised look, which was less so when she saw the gaze of the other wolves present on the ground, who also seemed to want to come and comfort their friend. But she was already well surrounded, so they just put a hand on her shoulder as they passed.
The wolves had just adopted Addison as one of their own, and the wolves were protecting their families.
Addison ends up coming out of her hiding place with a big smile on her face, ready to explode the opposing team. The three wolves whimpered a little as she moved to extricate herself from their embrace.
"I have to go play," she laughed in front of Wynter's puppies eyes.
The other students were moved to see these fierce creatures reduced to puppies in front of Addison's natural kindness. Eventually she managed to get up, and walked over to the field with Bree.
Throughout her game, the twins spent their time between growling whenever a member of the Yellow Team failed to touch her, and smiling whenever Addison touched someone, wherever she did acrobatics to escape a ball.
When she won, they were the first to applaud. Before growling softly again when Zed hugged her. Bree approached them first, resuming her seat next to Bonzo.
"Wow, calmos the two wolves, what's the matter with you?" Eliza said with a raised eyebrow.
Except it was Wynter who answered. She was also watching the scene with a dark gaze. "Addy is uncomfortable."
"Uncomfortable ? But that's just Zed?" Bree asked.
Wendy, a wolf sitting just from them too, who was also looking at the couple with a dark eye continued.
"Wolves can sense certain emotions. The chemical reactions in your body leave an odor that we can pick up on. And there, Addison is very nervous. And we happen to like Addison. She saved us. She's playing with us. She comes to visit us and never asks us to change who we are. And we don't like to see her uncomfortable."
Eliza and Bree took a look around her and saw that all the wolves were staring at the couple, about to pounce on them to drive Addison away. And now that they were really paying attention, she could see the nervous look on Addison's face, with one of the thousand-watt smiles she used when her parents forced her to attend one of their social events.
Addison finally pulled away from Zed's embrace, and almost ran back to her friends. She resumed her place between Wyatt and Bree. The wolf guided her head against his shoulder, while Willa and Wynter rested their own heads on her knees. Bree saw very clearly the small sigh of well-being that Addison gave. She glanced incredulously at Eliza, but she was looking at Zed. It looked like he was about to explode, but finally sighed loudly and walked back to the members of the soccer team.
Wyatt had to get up to play his own game. He was doing it reluckly, not wanting to leave Addison alone while she was still in distress. He glanced at his sister, who nodded, and took her place.
"Crush them, Wyatt!" said Addison, a big smile on her lips.
"Of course !"
And he was going to do it quickly to get back to Addison.
Ten minutes later, he was grinning, fangs forward, as he returned to his seat next to Addison's, Willa graciously letting him return to his seat, and sinking to Addison's feet. Her mouth was open, her eyes wide, but the wolves no longer felt her distress, so they considered it a victory.
"You let me win!" she finally said, turning to him, under the contained laughter of her sister and her best friend.
Wyatt pulled his head back a little, confused.
"The last time I came to the den, and we played with the pups in the fights, you let me win."
Addison pouted, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Not completely," Wyatt replied. "You still taught me a hell of a lesson. If you had the natural strength of werewolves, you would have crushed me."
Addison looked at him skeptically for a moment, before deciding to believe him and rest her head on his shoulder.
The losing teams would go head to head against each other, to be able to establish a ranking, which gave Addison a good quiet hour with his friends. Except that Zed was still trying to join her, and she knew she couldn't avoid him for long. And above all, it was her boyfriend, she didn't have to avoid him… right?
She finally apologized to her friends, who groaned and moaned, but finally let her get up, and returned to Zed, who was waiting for her under the stands for a little while between them. He smiled when he saw her arrive, and during that brief moment, she felt like seeing the Zed from the start, the one who was proud to be a zombie, and who was playing with her in the anti-zombie room.
"There you are."
He took her by the waist, and Addison let it go, because he was her boyfriend. She only smiled, and rested her head on his shoulder.
"I missed you."
"I wasn't far, you know," she joked.
"But I could not take you in my arms as I wanted, surrounded as was by your guard dogs."
Addison frowned at his poisonous tone. "Don't call them that, they're our friends. And they're affectionate, that's all. Werewolves are all like that, younger ones even more. It's their culture, you know that."
"Oh ? And what do you know about their culture?"
Addison finally looked up at him, her gaze disapprovingly. "Everything they wanted to teach me. As I learn about your culture every time I go to Zombieland. It is no different."
"It's different. In Zombieland, I can keep an eye on you, whereas when you go to their lair, I never know what's going on. Although I have had a better relationship with the wolves since their arrival, the fact remains that you are the only one who has the privilege of going to their place when you want, and I don't like not being able to be there to protect you."
Addison raised her eyebrows in astonishment. It was cute that Zed wanted to protect her, but she didn't need protection.
"Zed, the wolves will never hurt me. And I know how to defend myself. I am a big girl."
She gave him a small smile, which he didn't return. Addison was getting really fed up with his behavior.
"I don't like the fact that they touch you all the time."
"I already told you, it's their way of showing their affection! Stop being so closed-minded, you more than anyone should understand the value of cultural exchange."
"But we can't be the most perfect couple in Seabrook if you stay so loving with them!"
Again this story of the perfect couple?
"Zed, we weren't a perfect couple since the moment you stole my necklace just because you were afraid that I would become a wolf, instead of encouraging me in the way I had chosen for me."
"But I apologized!"
Addison let out a mocking laugh, incredulous at Zed's naivety. "And you think that makes a difference? You didn't trust me enough to let me choose what I wanted, you made me lose the trust of the wolves because this necklace was vitally important to them, you were more concerned about going to that stupid Prawn, who I remind you happens every year, than to help me understand what wolves wanted, or even better, to help me find my origins!"
Zed was speechless at Addison's fury. Neither of them noticed the two hidden shadows nearby, as they were too busy arguing.
"So excuse me for thinking that a simple apology for making me feel like I was an alien with my own family won't settle this whole thing!"
Addison touched the necklace she never separated from, and let its coolness spread against her palm and calm her little by little.
"Especially that in the end, it didn't even work…" she finally whispered.
She had her eyes lowered, and didn't see Zed's look, but the two nearby figures felt the guilt rising in him at the speed of light. They approached in an instant, positioning themselves between Addison and Zed in a defensive position.
"What did you do ?!" cried Willa, furious.
Wyatt decided to let his sister take care of it, and turned back to Addison, who was still shaking with rage. But Wyatt could see the tears that were not far from falling. He hurried to hug her, stroking her hair as she turned away, closing her eyes, hiding her face in the crook of his neck. But his ear was still outstretched to her sister, in case she needed help.
Except he knew she wouldn't need it. The alpha was already dangerous when she was calm, but when she was in full protection mode?
Zed had to think carefully.
"Zed, I will repeat my question, because I still have enough respect for you. What did you do to the necklace?"
Willa crouched down a little, claws sticking out, careful that her brother and Addison were behind her. It was a miracle that no one else came with their screams. But everyone was caught up in the dodgeball games, and with the screams on the pitch…
"I didn't do anything, Willa," Zed growled.
"And you're lying in my face," she replied. "I can feel your emotions from there, zombie! So you better tell me what you're hiding right now."
Zed didn't say anything, but under Willa's glare, he automatically put his hand on her Z bracelet. Willa followed the movement of her eyes, which she narrowed when she understood.
"Wyatt, can you give me Addison's necklace, please?"
The young man passed his hands behind the white hair of the young girl, who moaned softly at the loss of the object. Wyatt smiles a little. She might not be a wolf, but her soul had acquired some of their characteristics, including being uncomfortable without their necklace.
He handed the necklace to Wylla, who examined it more closely. And indeed, where the collar normally gave out regular and strong pulses, there was only a weak pulse, barely detectable.
"It's almost entirely empty," Willa whispered. "You almost emptied it!"
She glared at Zed, returning the necklace to Wyatt who took care of wrapping it around Addison's neck.
"Even if Addison was a wolf, she could not have transformed, because he did not have enough energy!"
"And for the better! Addison doesn't have to be a wolf!" Zed replied. "She is perfect as she is! It must not change! And now that's no use anymore, right? You have recovered your stone, you no longer need the Great Alpha!"
Willa was about to respond with a well-placed spike, when a white whirlwind passed in front of her. Addison came running up to Zed, and using the muscles she had developed playing with the pups, she slapped him hard.
"By what right do you decide what is best for me ?! If I want to become a wolf, then it's my choice, not yours!"
"Your parents…"
"My parents have nothing to tell me either! They have never behaved like such before, and their opinion doesn't matter to me! They stopped being my parents the day they forced me to put on that stupid blonde wig because they were ashamed of having a different daughter!"
Willa walked over to Addison, and took her shoulder, pulling her away from the zombie. Addison let it go, and fell like a doll in the arms of the wolf. She stroked her hair, hugging her, whispering comforting words to her. Wyatt kept an eye on Zed, daring him to approach them in his custody. Except he didn't. He just bowed his head, ashamed, and finally walked away.
He realized that he had ended up losing Addison's love, because instead of trusting her like she trusted him, he had betrayed her too many times for a simple apology to fix it.
Willa, Wyatt and Addison stayed under the bleachers while the young girl calmed down. She finally released herself slowly from their embrace, smiling sadly.
"I'm fine."
"Addison…"
She looked up at Wyatt, who had his puppies eyes pounding at full force. She gave him a small smile.
"Ok, I'm not doing well, but I'm sure killing you with a balloon will cheer me up!"
Neither brother nor sister had the heart to point out her lie. They just smiled at her, licking her cheek, before taking her to their place. Their friends looked at them, but didn't ask any questions. Eliza just put a hand on Addison's knee, and Addison stroked her back with her close protection.
The rest of the afternoon passed more quietly. Willa crushed the other teams, taking pleasure in touching Zed violently when they were against each other. Wyatt didn't shy away either, and once Wynter learned what had happened, she also went out of her way to make Willa and Wyatt proud.
Wyatt won against Wynter, who pouted until he promised to give him five pebbles. Her mood changed abruptly at the words, going from sad to hopping all over the place, and Addison laughed.
"I got screwed, right?" Wyatt told her with a resigned smile on his face.
"Completely," laughed Addison.
Willa's match against Wynter went much the same way, except that Willa only had to scratch Wynter's head for her to stop sulking. The match between Willa and Wyatt, because that was what it was, a fair match between the two, and the other members of the team taking cover, but Addison was laughing heartily, which was well worth it. hardly. Wyatt won in the end, which he kept repeating in his sister's ear, who threatened to rip his tongue out if he didn't shut up soon.
Addison won against Eliza and Wynter, the latter trying to pout her, which Addison countered with a kiss on the cheek. Wynter was so happy that she literally forgot about the competition.
Finally it was the end of the competition. Only Wyatt and Addison's teams were left.
"Are you ready to be slaughtered?" Wyatt shouted.
"It's cute you think you can beat me!" she retorted.
The first whistle sounded, and the two teams rushed for the balls. Once in position, the coach whistled again.
The game was both very fast and very slow. Fast in the sense that during the first five minutes, people were leaving the field on a fairly regular basis. Bree held out for a while, before one of the opposing team's wolves touched her leg.
The game continued until only Wyatt and Addison were left. The crowd was literally raving.
"Ready to lose?"
"You tell me," Addison replied, smiling.
A monumental ball game took place. None of them let it go, dodging every balls, and throwing them back with incredible speed. Addison had to admit that without her weekly wolves training she would have had a hard time matching Wyatt's speed, but she could be on a level playing field, so she wasn't complaining.
"Come on Addison!" cried Willa.
"Willa! Do you support your brother's enemy ?!" Wyatt cried, dodging another ball.
"Do you have a problem with it?" she retorted.
Wyatt stood still for a moment, pretending to think, before another ball thrown in his direction forced him to move.
"No ! I admit that if it wasn't me in the field, I would have done the same!"
Addison chuckled in pleasure, which was the point. Except that this simple moment of inattention was what led to his demise. Wyatt took the opportunity to hurl one of his balls at lightning speed, which hit Addison in her arm.
The coach whistled the end of the match, then three more time to signify the end of the competition.
Addison pouted a bit, but couldn't stay angry when Wyatt gave her his doggy eyes.
"New lesson: never lose sight of your opponent," Willa commented, coming up behind her, hugging her.
"You fought well, Addison," Bree added. "You are the only human who could have followed the wolves with their speed and their strength."
"It almost looked like a wolf yourself," Eliza finished, taking her in her turn in her arms.
Addison froze, and exchanged a meaningful look with Wyatt and Willa. The big question now was, what were they going to do?
So, I have written this two-shot sometime las month, and now I'm publishing it. It was supposed to be just a fluff cute little dodgeball AU... Thank you brain, for that... I will post the second part tomorrow.
I have to warn, this is a WillaxAddisonxWyatt story. I think I'm the first one to write something with this ship, so don't judge me too harshly ?
