Hey I'm back! This is sort of a one-shot to serve as a break between two of my longer stories. I just finished A Brother's Love and I'm about to start writing a new story featuring our favorite little twins and their family.
This story is linked to "The Adventures of Two Little Rascals". For those of you who haven't read The adventures of two little rascals, here's what you need to know:
-Legolas and Estel (Aragorn) were born on the same day of the same year which is why they are labeled as twins and they were raised together. They were brought up in both Imladris under Elrond's care and Mirkwood under Thranduil's care.
-Both Elrond and Thranduil consider Legolas, Estel, Elladan and Elrohir to be their sons, which is why the 4 kids call both of them Ada.
-Elrond and Thranduil also grew up together and are brothers in everything but blood so it was only logical for their kids to be brothers too.
- Galadriel and Celeborn are the 4 kids' grandparents, and that's why Thranduil and Elrond call them naneth and adar.
That's about it. If you want more, go check out the story! If not, let's get on with this one;)
This story takes place sometime during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.
Disclaimer: I don't own The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit and everything associated with them. I only own the idea for this story.
o
It was a quiet evening. The wind was blowing softly, not too cold but cool enough to keep them refreshed.
The fellowship had just stopped for the night, and were currently setting up camp in one of the secluded areas in the mountains.
"Strider, where are we supposed to lay our bedrolls?" Pippin approached the spot where Aragorn was tending to the small fire he had lit.
"You can lay them wherever you want, nobody owns this place." he said winking.
Pippin's face reddened a bit and he smiled then turned back to help the rest of the hobbits lay their bedrolls.
Legolas rolled his eyes and came to stand by his twin "You needn't tease him Esty."
Aragorn smiled "Such a gentle soul." he teased him back which earned him a shove.
Once the bedrolls were laid out and the food portions distributed, the fellowship sat on their bedrolls gathered around the fire. The hobbits were engaged in a conversation about food, unsurprisingly. Gandalf, Boromir and Gimli were exchanging some words here and there, but their eyes flitted about the place, in case a group of orcs were to come bursting through the clearing. Meanwhile, Aragorn and Legolas were sitting on the same bedroll, eating silently while savoring each other's heat and comfort.
As they finished their meal, they leaned back onto the trees behind their bedrolls and savored the silence. But it was soon broken by Pippin's voice.
"Excuse me, Mr. Strider and Mr. Legolas?" his voice was uncertain.
They both smiled at him "Please Pippin, call us Aragorn and Legolas."
Pippin nodded "Aragorn, may I ask a question?"
"Sure Pippin go ahead."
Pippin hesitated then seemed to gather the courage and finally spoke, "I noticed that you and Mr. Legolas hardly leave each other's sides and seem to know each other beforehand. You also call each other nicknames. May I ask why? " he asked.
The fellowship just watched the exchange but it was written on their faces that they too wanted to know the answer to Pippin's question. Well all of them except for Gandalf, who already knew about the twins.
Aragorn laughed " Forgive us Pippin, we should have known it would be confusing. The truth is, Legolas and I are brothers."
"Brothers? How are you brothers? He's an elf and you're a human." Gimli inquired.
Legolas answered this time "Alright, let's start from the beginning. I call him Estel because that's what his given elvish name is, Esty for short as it was my nickname for him as a child. He calls me Las because it was his nickname for me as a child as well..."
Aragorn cut him off "I though you were going to start from the beginning. That is not the beginning."
Legolas scowled "Fine, you talk then."
Aragorn smirked "Gladly. Anyways, first of all you should all know the most basic fact. Legolas and I are not just brothers, we're twins."
"Twins? How so? He's immortal, you're not." Boromir asked, confused.
"We have a lot of explaining to do." Legolas muttered.
"We'll start at the very top. We have two fathers, Lord Elrond of Imladris whom you met in Rivendell and King Thranduil of Greenwood."
"Greenwood?" Sam asked.
"They call it Mirkwood now Sam." Legolas said sadly.
Aragorn nodded "Both our fathers grew up together, which made them very close, the closest of brothers. So when Lord Elrond got married to the Lady Celebrian and had 3 children, twin boys: Elladan and Elrohir, and a girl: Arwen, King Thranduil became a father to them too. Then when Lady Celebrian sailed to the undying lands, Arwen went to stay away with some relatives while Elladan and Elrohir stayed with their fathers. Many years later, King Thranduil got married to Lady Celebrian's twin sister, and Legolas was born. However, Legolas was premature, meaning that he was born very early, and the queen of Greenwood died right after childbirth, so that left Thranduil and Elrond to bring up 3 boys alone." Estel said.
" Then, when I was the equivalent of a six month old human, my fathers received word of the murder Aragorn's biological parents and kin. He was the only survivor. He was brought to Rivendell and my fathers decided to adopt him as one of their own. They also discovered that both of us were born on the same day of the same year, and only minutes apart." Legolas continued.
The hobbits gasped in surprise "Wow." Merry whispered.
" To answer your question Boromir, I am a Dunedain. We usually age as slow as the elves, which makes Legolas and I the same age precisely. "
Boromir nodded in understanding "Which one of you is older?"
Pippin tilted his head in confusion "Aren't they twins? How can one be older than the other?" he asked.
Merry rolled his eyes "Twins aren't born at the same exact minute Pip. They're usually born minutes apart."
"Oh, so who's older?" Pippin asked.
Legolas answered quickly "That's not important..."
Aragorn rolled his eyes "You just say that because you hate to be branded as the little one, which you are."
Legolas glared at him "We were born only two minutes apart!" he said indignantly.
Aragorn smirked "Two minutes still makes me older." he said sweetly.
Legolas growled "Why you little..."
"I believe you're the little one, I'm the older one." Aragorn replied.
Gandalf cleared his throat " Why don't you two carry on with the explanations?" he suggested, preventing Legolas from pouncing on Aragorn. The rest of the fellowship was watching the exchange amusedly.
"Very well, after being adopted and our family found out that we were twins, Legolas and I immediately bonded. A bond was created between us and made us closer than any two individuals. Even closer than our twin brothers. Consider it like a puzzle piece, it's never complete without the other. Legolas and I have never been apart from each other for a long time, except for two incidents. Both were very unfortunate and horrible and we don't wish to relive them so we ask you not to ask about them. That's why you see that we're always together, and why we never leave each other's side." Aragorn continued.
" So to sum it up, we're both twins, and our elvish names are Legolas Thranduilion Elrondion and Estel Thranduilion Elrondion. It means sons of Thranduil and Elrond. "Legolas concluded.
" Thank you for explaining. "Pippin said timidly.
" Feel free to ask us any questions. " Aragorn said, smiling at Pippin.
" How old are you? " Gimli blurted out.
" We are 2931 years old. " Legolas answered.
The hobbits' eyes bugged out while Bormoir and Gimli choked.
Gandalf laughed at their reactions.
" My dear fellows. You forget that elves and dundedains age differently than the rest of you. For instance, 1 yeni for an elf or a Dunedain is the equivalent of 144 years for a mortal." Gandalf explained.
"So they age one year every 144 years?" Frodo asked.
Legolas and Aragorn nodded.
"So how old would you be? In human years?" Merry asked.
The twins shot each other looks "Let's not go down that road.." Aragorn started.
"For it will get us nowhere." Legolas finished.
Gandalf chuckled "Why resist your eager subjects tithen pens. I'll answer it for them." he said ignoring the pleads of the twins.
"Assuming they age 1 human year every 144 years, and they're now 2931 years. In human years they'd be about 20 years old." Gandalf explained.
"TWENTY?!" the rest of the fellowship echoed in shock.
"But that's so young!" Bormoir exclaimed.
The twins narrowed their eyes "Aye, we might be young but we've also seen more of the horror of wars than any one of you has except for Gandalf. So do not underestimate us just because of our age." Legolas told them, his tone serious.
"Aye I agree with the elfling." Gandalf said, smiling when Legolas glared at him.
"Worry not my friends, no one in this fellowship will do that." Boromir vowed.
"Aye, we respect you and believe you are two of the mightiest warriors you have seen." Sam added.
" Thank you friends." Legolas told them.
They all stared at the fireplace for a while until a large yawn cut through the air, heads snapped towards the sound of the noise to find Pippin's face reddening like a tomato.
"Sorry." he said in a low voice, embarrassed.
The rest of the fellowship laughed.
"It's off to bed then, Legolas and I will take the first watch." Aragorn announced.
Everyone else nodded gratefully, as they were all tired, and settled down on their bedrolls. Soon, sounds of Gimli's snoring and the hobbits' light breathing filled the air.
Legolas lay down against Aragorn, his head on his twin's chest, and Aragorn's arms around his own chest.
"That went well." he said, humor in his voice.
"Aye I was surprised. Usually people call us liars after we tell our tale." Aragorn replied.
Legolas snorted "Please Esty, it was only one time. It's not like we tell every person or creature we ever meet that we're twins and our whole story." he countered.
Aragorn laughed softly, careful not to wake the others. "True, but the one person that we did tell called us liars and attempted to murder us both."
Legolas frowned "I didn't tell him anything. You were the one that decided to get so sleep deprived that your brain decided it would be a good idea to tell a complete random stranger of an innkeeper our history together. I was the one who had to come save your hide from getting killed."
"By getting severely injured yourself." Aragorn shot back.
"Shut up Esty." came the instant reply.
"You know I'm beginning to think our adas were right. We really can't go out the door and return in the same condition. At least one of us returns injured." Aragorn remarked.
"Or one of us hides the injury until he collapses."
"That's mostly you." Aragorn said dryly.
Legolas shrugged, well as much as he could while lying across his brother's chest.
They lay in silence for a while, until Aragorn broke the silence.
"Las?"
"Yeah?"
" Once I'm crowned king, and married to Arwen, what are you going to do?"
Legolas straightened until he was facing his brother "What do you want me to do?" he asked.
Aragorn looked at his twin "I don't want you to leave me." he confessed.
Legolas placed a hand around his twin's shoulders "Esty, we've been over this a hundred times. I promised I would never leave you. Not here on arda and certainly not in the Valinor. You being king doesn't change that fact, or the fact that we're twins and nothing could ever tear me away from you, not even a piece of gold headwear." he promised.
"What about Arwen?" Aragorn asked.
"Arwen and I talked. She personally threatened me to stay by your side when all that happens. She said that she won't live in the castle with you unless I am too. I told her she needn't do that because I'm not leaving your side, ever. You have a pretty good wife to be gwador nin."
Aragorn smiled "Careful Las, people will start thinking it's you that Arwen wants." he teased.
Legolas rolled his eyes "Not in a million years Esty, I'm never getting married."
Aragorn leaned closer into his brother's embrace "I'm glad that Arwen understands. I can't stand to think what my life would be without you. I can't go one day without being with you, heck I can't go a couple of minutes without you."
Legolas kissed his brother's head "I'm not going anywhere Esty. "
A couple of hours later, Gandalf woke up and took over watch from the twins.
When the rest of the fellowship woke up in the morning, they were met with a heartwarming sight. Legolas and Aragorn were sleeping on the same bedroll, with Aragorn's hand placed protectively on the younger twin's chest and Legolas's head next to his twin's shoulder.
Gandalf came back from where he was gathering some fruit on the trees "Do not appear so shocked young lads, this is how they always sleep. They can't stand being several inches away from each other, even when sleeping." He said amusedly.
Not long after, the twins woke up and the fellowship continued their journey towards Mordor. But something changed after the brief time they spent the night before.
The fellowship started to notice and witness little gestures and actions between the two brothers.
Like the time Aragorn rubbed his hands together as they approached Caradhras, and Legolas took off his cloak and wrapping it around his twin without either one of them uttering a single word.
Or when Aragorn never let go of his twin's hand when Legolas became somewhat subdued when they entered the darkness of Moria.
And how Legolas intercepted an arrow meant for Aragorn before they reached Lothlorien without even batting an eyelid. An arrow which would've killed Aragorn had it met its mark, and instead almost killed Legolas. The cause of that was the arrow piercing one of his ever vulnerable lungs.
Instead of viewing them as two separate individuals, they fellowship saw them as one. Two hearts, yet one soul. They witnessed first hand the bond and the love between the two brothers. And when Aragorn was crowned king, he kept a firm hold on Legolas's hand as soon as he stepped into the crowds. And Legolas was there, sending his brother waves of strength and comfort through their bond and their linked hands.
They saw first hand how strong the love of a brother, nay, a twin was.
