Well hello there! I'm back! Did you miss me? XD

And here is my newest Danvers Sisters Crazy AU Fanfic! I couldn't get this idea out of my head so... here it is. I'm not super far into it so let me know if you think I should keep going ;)

AU Details: Most should become apparent as you read but a couple things to know off the bat:

1. I've de-aged Kara slightly to 11 years old to make her a younger character and increase the age distance between her and Alex.

2. In this AU, the DEO does not know about Kara being Kryptonian. I never understood exactly how they knew about her in the show - surely the Danvers would tell them... In this version, the Danvers family has truly hidden Kara's identity and has created a fully human cover for her, including adoption papers. This is why she is able to stay with Alex when they go into the foster care system.

3. When the (evil) Henshaw recruits (read: forces) Jeremiah Danvers to work for him, he also includes Eliza. It never made sense to me why they would go after only Jeremiah and not Eliza, when she's such an awesome scientist and alien expert. It seems a little sexist tbh *shrugs* but maybe I missed something. Anyways, they BOTH are force to work for the DEO in this version and Kara is not the subject of their threats because as stated in #2, they don't know Kara is Kryptonian. But the DEO is a powerful government agency, they would have plenty of other ways of persuasion.

4. If the relationship between Alex and Kara feels a bit rushed between the past/present, don't worry. I'll be delving more into it in flashbacks. I'll also be delving more into their grief and processing of the situation.

Okay, that should set you up well for this story! Now it's time for the main event!

Enjoy!

~Past~

"This is all her fault! It's not fair!" Alex put her hands on her hips, dark eyes flashing. "Before she came, you never had to both go work for that stupid company! And I'm stuck babysitting some alien!"

It was eruption of anger that Alex had experienced several times since the blonde Kryptonian had come to live with them, but the intensity had reached its peak. All she could think about was the news her parents had just given her: they both had to go back to work for their old company, which meant Alex was on full-time babysitting duty watching over one alien kid freak. No hanging out with friends after school, no extracurricular activities - she had to go straight home to look out for Kara until one of her parents got home from work. Which apparently might be very late.
Basically, her life was over.

Alex clenched her fists as Kara's innocent expression flashed in her mind. Of course all they could see were those wide blue eyes... Alex was the only one who was seeing what was really going on.

Kara Zor-El was destroying their family.

"Alex, be kind." Jeremiah's voice was firm, sternness lining his face. "This is not Kara's fault."

Alex opened her mouth to protest but her mom cut in before she could say a word.

"Honey, these are powerful people and we can't say no. This has nothing to do with Kara, they don't even know she is Kryptonian. And we have to keep it that way." Eliza's voice was gentle, hand reaching to smooth Alex's wild auburn hair. "Alex, this is really serious. Look at me." Eliza cupped Alex's face, her bright blue eyes meeting Alex's stormy gaze. "Alex, if they find out about Kara, they will take her away and hurt her."

"So this IS about protecting Kara!" Alex's eyes narrowed. "You care about her more than your own daughter!"

"Alex, you're missing the point..."

"No, I'm not! I'm the only one actually seeing the point!" Alex tried to blink away the angry tears that pricked at the back of her eyelids and push away the small voice in her head that was reminding her that it was Kara who had lost everything. That missing after school activities wasn't a big of a deal compared to being in danger of being taken away by the government. That even though she was upset, she wasn't the one who quietly cried herself to sleep every night - Kara was.

Shut up. Everything isn't about Kara. Alex grit her teeth.

"Honey, I know this is hard. But someday you'll see that having Kara here with us isn't a bad thing, it's a gift."

"You're both crazy and I hate you!"

Her emotions hit their limit and she stormed up the stairs, practically feeling her own anger radiating around her. As Alex made a beeline for her bedroom and turned to close the door behind her, she noticed a small face peeking out at her from across the hall.

"Leave me alone."

Kara disappeared and Alex slammed the door.

~Present~

Alex moved as quickly and quietly as she could through the dark house, her path down the hall lit only by the glow of the streetlight through the windows. She arrived at her destination, tapping softly against the door.

"Hey, it's me," she whispered.

There was a soft scraping noise and then the door opened, a low warm glow of light seeping into the hall as the door opened a crack. Two bright and wide blue eyes peered out before the door was pulled open wider and Alex was able to slip inside. She only paused to put down her precious cargo before moving the chair near the door back into its position, propped up under the door.

Alex finally turned to give her attention to the wan golden haired figure by the bed, almost swallowed in an oversized sweatshirt. She stumbled back slightly as the girl jumped into her arms.

"Hey. You okay, Kara?" She gave her a tight hug, internally wincing at the Krytponian's tangible thinness.

Oh god, what were they going to do? How could they keep going like this? As soon as the thoughts came, Alex pushed them away. She just couldn't deal with them at the moment.

"I just was worried." Kara clung to her, slender limbs still easily able to squeeze the air out of Alex's lungs and cause her ribs to creak.

"Kara... air..."

"Oops." Kara's grip loosened but Alex caught her before she could step away.

"Nuh-uh. I still want a hug. I just want to breathe also."

Kara smiled slightly at that before growing serious again, brow crinkling."They didn't see you, did they?"

"Nah. You know me, I'm basically a stealth ninja."

"You do wear black all the time," Kara poked Alex's black t-shirt to prove her point, raising her eyebrows and grinning.

"Hey!" Alex crossed her arms. "A low blow from a noble Kryptonian."

"It is our noble burden to tell the hard truths." Kara laughed, a melodic sound that Alex didn't hear nearly enough.

"I can't even," Alex shook her head, trying to hide her smile.

"You can't even what?"

"Okay you nobly burdened youth, come over here and eat so we can go to sleep." Alex grabbed the bag that carried her finds of the evening and began to take inventory of the different food she had managed to gather. It wasn't a ton; she tried to take small amounts from the different cereals and snacks kept locked away so it wasn't obvious that anything was gone, but together it added up.

"They're going to notice, Alex." Gone was the warm merriment and teasing smile that had lit up Kara's face, pale fear taking residence instead. "What if you get in trouble again?"

Worry and frustration pushed against each other inside Alex's chest, causing a familiar ache. "You have to eat, Kara. You're not getting enough and they won't give us more so I have to do something. I'm not going to let you starve."

"Stealing is wrong." Kara's jaw was set with resolve even as her arms unconsciously wrapped around her stomach and her eyes couldn't stop darting toward the food.

Alex felt like pulling out her own hair. It drove her crazy when Kara got like this. The girl's moral compass was so strong, it literally would kill her if Alex didn't intervene.

"Kara." Alex pushed a granola bar toward the girl. "This isn't stealing. It's surviving. What if I wasn't getting enough to eat?"

Kara bit her lip, large eyes flickering between Alex and the granola bar, anguish clear. "But I'm okay. I don't need it."

"Yes you do. Please Kara. I'm barely getting enough and I have a human metabolism. So I know you're hungry." When Kara only crossed her arms, Alex sighed and went for the only thing that consistently worked even though she hated it. "What if we split? I know I'm still hungry."

Later, laying in bed, the taste of honey and oats still lingering on her tongue and Kara curled up fast asleep beside her, Alex resolved that tomorrow she would get Kara to eat all the food. It wasn't that Alex wasn't hungry, but she didn't need it like Kara did. It scared her to see how thin the girl had become. In the faint glow of the nightlight that Kara couldn't sleep without, Alex could see angles in the Kryptonian's features that hadn't been there before.

How long would they last? Alone at last with her thoughts, Alex allowed the reality of their situation to wash over her.

She was a fourteen-year-old foster kid, trying to protect and care for an eleven-year-old Kryptonian.

How on earth had she gotten here? How had everything changed so much?

Memories surfaced, unbidden and unwanted.

"Hello Alexandra. I'm here with Child Social Services. Let's sit down, I need to tell you and your sister about something that happened."

"What's going on? Where are my parents?"

The grief was like a black hole; all consuming and ever expanding. Alex could still feel the anger, the hate, the grief, and the despair that had found its outlet in Kara.

"This is all your fault!"

"Go away."

"Leave me alone."

"I don't want to be seen with you."

"I hate you."

Alex still wasn't sure why even at her lowest, she had protected Kara's Kryptonian identity from social services and their foster family. Perhaps it was some latent desire to honor her parents decision to bring Kara into their family and protect her. Maybe it was that, however angry she was, she did care for Kara deep down. Maybe it was that Kara was all she had left.

"Alex?"

"Go away." She made sure not to look at the Kryptonian who had crept into the room.

"I... I wanted to make sure you got dinner."

"I'm not hungry."

"I'll just leave it here." A plate was carefully set on the bedside table.

Something about Kara's voice off but Alex ignored it, waiting to hear the soft footsteps and slight creak of the door shutting to signal she was alone again with her misery. Instead she heard a couple wavering steps and then a strange thud.

"I said go away..." Alex sat up, only to find Kara crumpled by the bedroom door. "Kara!" She didn't remember moving but suddenly she was by the girl's side, panic nearly suffocating her as she felt for a pulse. "Oh my god, Kara!" Although the Kryptonian had a pulse and was breathing, she still remained unresponsive. Her youthful face was wan and ashen, gold hair a tangled halo, closed eyes hugged by dark circles. In that moment, Alex suddenly felt like she was really seeing Kara for the first time.

She was... just a kid.

Not some criminal evil alien, just... a kid. A little kid who had lost everything, just like Alex, but twice.

And Alex had blamed her even though there was no way an eleven-year-old could be responsible for these things.

"Oh my god, Kara, I'm so sorry. Come on, just wake up, you're going to be okay," Alex practically begged. Should she call 911? Then they would discover Kara was an alien for sure, but at least she wouldn't be dead, it had to be better, right?

Just as Alex was about to go run for the phone, Kara stirred slightly.

"Kara?"

The girl groaned softly, eyes flickering open, expression dazed. "What..."

"Oh my god, Kara." Alex felt a rush of relief that was unexpected in its intensity. "Can you hear me? How many fingers am I holding up? Do you remember where you are?"

"I'm okay," Kara tried to sit up, arms trembling at the movement. "I just got really light headed..."

Alex looked between Kara and the plate piled with food still sitting on the bedside table, realization twisting her insides. "Kara... Have you been eating?"

"I... I wanted to make sure you got enough."

The way Kara's gaze darted away from her said it all.

"You have to eat this. You're not getting enough food." Alex grabbed the plate and pushed it toward Kara. "That can make you pass out. It happened to a kid in my class last year."

"I..." Kara looked down at the plate then hesitantly to Alex. "I thought you hated me."

"Well you thought wrong."

So... what did you think? Shall I continue? :)
