I posted this and another story a little while ago on Ao3 and forgot to put it here. So here you all go:
Yet again, there's a Rayllum month prompt thingy that relates to an idea I had beforehand and figured "why not just write it now?" This started out as a concept I had for a story where Rayla, Callum, and Ezran visit the Silvergrove, but this was the only scene I fully fleshed out. I couldn't think of a plot or much else to do (besides showing Ezran the adoraburrs which is something that needs to happen in canon at some point) and left it on the back-burner. But I saw the "Rayllum month" prompt was "Sleepover" and I realized this fit too well to ignore.
Ghostings were permanent. At the very least Rayla had never heard of one being lifted. But after countless petitions and no small amount of behind the scenes work from Ethari, Rayla's banishment was at long last undone.
Naturally she chose to bring Callum and Ezran along with her for her homecoming visit. After a day spent frolicking in the adoraburr meadows, eating moonberry surprise, and catching up with Rayla's old acquaintances, the three returned to Ethari's house to turn in for the night. They had a light dinner and then Ethari took them to their rooms. Rayla would stay in her childhood bedroom of course, but first Ethari lead the trio to another room down the hall.
"Your Highness-" Ethari started to say before Ezran cut him off.
"Just Ezran is fine. Or Ez if you want."
"Sorry, Ezran." Ethari chuckled, "It's not very often I have a king as a house guest. As I was saying, you and Callum can stay in the guestroom."
Ezran was confused. Why did Callum have to stay with him? Did Ethari think he was a still a little kid who would be afraid to sleep on his own while away from home? Besides, he knew how sad his brother and Rayla would be to be kept apart.
"It's okay," he said. "I'm old enough that I can stay on my own. Plus I know how much Callum and Rayla like to sleep together."
The hall grew very quiet. Callum and Rayla's faces paled. To Ezran's bafflement, they looked horrified at what he'd said, rather than appreciative.
Ethari stared directly at the pair with his eyebrow cocked. "Do you now?"
"No we don't! We don't!" Rayla exclaimed.
Now Ezran was really stumped. He could count the times they'd slept apart on one hand. "What do you mean? You guys share a room."
"With separate beds! Our room has two beds!" Callum clarified. He looked pleadingly at Ethari, hoping he believed him.
Ezran didn't know why Callum and Rayla were acting so weird about this. He was trying to help them.
"Yeah," Ezran countered, "but Rayla hasn't used that one in forever. You even told me it's only there so Opeli doesn't get mad."
Maybe that's what this was about? They were worried Ethari would be upset like Opeli? That didn't make any sense to Ezran. Opeli was all about traditions and formality, but Ethari was Rayla's dad-uncle-person (Rayla hadn't provided the clearest explanation of her and Ethari's relationship to Ezran, as if she didn't know exactly how to qualify it herself). Surely he would understand.
"He's not- That's not what it sounds like-" Callum stuttered.
"Seriously, guys, it's okay. I know how much you like to sleep together and I'm old enough to have my own room. I have my own room at the castle, remember?"
Ethari interjected, "Well, I don't know how things are done in Katolis, but while you're staying here, I'd prefer if Callum stayed in the guestroom with you."
While Ezran could have pressed the issue further, his brother and Rayla seemed relieved that the conversation was over, so he ceased his protest.
Ethari put his hand on Rayla's shoulder. "Now if you'll excuse us, Rayla and I need to have a little talk. I'll see you both in the morning."
As Ethari led Rayla down the hall, she glanced back at the Callum with a mortified look. It was the kind of warning expression that even Ezran could tell meant that his brother would be having a similar talk with Ethari come the morning. Callum gulped.
"What just happened? Did I say something wrong?" Ezran asked once Ethari and Rayla were gone. He still didn't understand any of this. Had he violated some Moonshadow elf custom Rayla neglected to warn him about? What was so wrong about Callum and Rayla sleeping next to each other? It's wasn't like they were-
Oh.
Ezran slapped his forehead. "Oh! I made it sound like..." he flashed Callum an apologetic and nervous smile, "Sorry."
