"Master Oogway," a female's voice called.
The snow leopard rushed up the stairs towards the Sacred Peachtree - her fur and silk clothes whipping wildly in the wind she made as she sprinted on all fours.
"Master Oogway!"
When she reached the top of the stairs, an old tortoise was seated on the ground, his back turned to her; she stood on her hindlegs.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your meditation, Master," she panted, putting her fist to her palm then bowing.
"There is no need to be sorry, my student," the tortoise - Master Oogway - replied as his wisened face turned to her, "What brings you here in such a rush?"
He motioned for her to sit.
The snow leopard sat beside him. She let out a troubled sigh.
"I have had a vision, Master," she began, keeping her red and yellow eyes glued to the ground, "Tai Lung will escape Chorgun Prison."
Master Oogway slowly nodded, "I have had this same vision."
"What will we do, Master? You know what will happen if he escapes."
Oogway nodded again and begun to stand, "It is time for the Dragon Warrior to be revealed, Shai."
He turned and began walking away; Shai quickly followed. "The Dragon Warrior is the only one who will be able to stop him."
Shai's ears flattened sadly. "But... what if he's changed?" Oogway glanced at her with a raised brow. "What if... what if the visions are wrong?"
Oogway sighed. He stopped her and placed a hand on her broad shoulder.
"I know you care for him a lot, Shai. He is your brother. But I'm afraid he is not the kind of person who can be changed."
"I could always try..." she said, "Right?"
"You already have, and look what he did to you."
He gestured to Shai's right eye. A large scar covered it - three long, dark lines scraping down her furry face.
"You know what must be done."
Shai let out a long sigh, nodding sadly in defeat, tears coming into her eyes.
"I'm sorry," Oogway said and continued on his way to the Jade Palace.
For 20yrs Shai's older brother had haunted her. She would always get nightly flashbacks of when they were younger; before he turned evil and had to be put in that Prison. Shai had missed him considerably.
When she opened the gates to the Training Hall, Shai was met with a male's agitated voice.
"Shai Lung. You're late for training," the voice sighed, "Again."
Shai moved her eyes toward the voice; none other than Master Shifu - her previous Master - and the Furious Five stood before her. All except Master Tigress stared at her with such ferocity that most others would be scared silly; but Shai Lung was not like "most others".
Just as Master Mantis was about to make a smart remark, a messenger goose came through the gates.
"Master Shifu?"
"Yes, Zang," Shifu, a red panda, asked as he dusted off his robes.
"Master Oogway would like to see you."
Shai smirked to hide her pain and sorrow when the Masters looked back at her.
"Looks like you'll be finding out what my excuse is, Master Shifu," she said, and went off into the Hall to train by herself.
{Meanwhile, in the Hall of Heroes}
Shifu burst though the huge wooden doors, running until he got almost to the end of the large Hall. He stopped and settled himself enough to speak with his friend.
"Master Oogway," he breathed, "You summoned me? Is there something wrong?"
In a crystal blue pool, a staff stood upright with a tortoise shell seated on top. Slowly, it began to move until it revealed Master Oogway.
"Why must something be wrong for me to see my old friend?" Oogway asked, as he stepped in front of him.
"So there's nothing wrong?"
Oogway chuckled, making his way over to a bench of thousands of lit candles.
"Now, I didn't say that."
He began to blow out the candles one by one. He glanced up at Shifu, drew in a deep breath as he lifted a black claw; then turned back to the candles and blew out another.
Shifu grew impatient. He made a swift move which sent a wind over all the candles, snuffing them out instantly.
"You were saying," Master Shifu encouraged.
Oogway turned to his friend, "Shai and I have had a vision: Tai Lung will escape Chorgun Prison."
Shifu's brown eyes widened in fear. He turned to Zang, the messenger goose.
"Go to Chorgun Prison! Tell them to double the guards, double the weapons; double everything! Tai Lung does not escape that Prison," he ordered.
Zang nodded hastily, "Yes, Master."
He then flew off, hitting one of the magnificently decorated columns that lined the Hall.
"The things that you do to prevent something," Oogway began, "Can sometimes lead to it happening."
"Well, what do you suggest we do?"
"Your mind is like this water: when something disturbs it, it becomes agitated; but if you let it settle, all will be made clear."
He lightly touched the water's surface with the staff's tip. The water then stilled and the reflection of a golden dragon with a green and red scroll in its mouth stared at them.
Shifu quickly looked up,
"The Dragon Scroll? Is it time?"
Oogway nodded, "Indeed it is."
"But who," Master Shifu asked, "Who will be worthy enough to receive the great power of the Scroll to become the Dragon Warrior?"
Oogway shook his head and shrugged, "I don't know."
Shifu just stared at him in disbelief.
Shai was meditating - trying to clear her mind of the memories of her brother - when Master Shifu and the Furious Five rushed to her.
"What do you want," She growled, not in the mood for talking today; especially after her talk with Oogway.
Shifu stuttered, his brown eyes wide with disbelief, "Y-you knew about Tai Lung and the Dragon Warrior?!"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you say anything," the Five asked in unison.
Shai groaned and rolled her eyes as she stood.
Although she was a female, she was still taller and more muscular than Tigress; at a first glance, people would think she was actually a male.
"I didn't say anything because you didn't ask."
"But you told Master Oo-..."
"Because he's my Master, and I am instructed to tell him these things," Shai snapped, interrupting Shifu.
"Are you coming to see who the Dragon Warrior will be, Master Shai," Viper asked in her sweet, sincere voice.
Shai pushed her anger away and smiled, "Of course I will!"
Tigress put a hand on her shoulder. "Are you sure? You haven't had a public appearance since..." Tigress trailed off, looking down.
"I'm sure," Shai answered, giving her friend, her student, a nod, "Nothing in the world could stop me from witnessing who will be chosen."
Monkey, Viper, Crane and Mantis became very excited. Tigress didn't show it outwardly, but Shai could tell she was just as excited as they were.
"Alright, settle down," Shifu commanded, then sighed, "You must go and get yourselves ready, for this will be a big day."
Shai slowly nodded in agreement, "Indeed. You have all trained hard throughout your lives, so you must remember: whoever Master Oogway chooses will bring peace to the Valley; no matter their size, nor their skill - whoever is chosen, there will be no accidents in the universe's choice."
"Yes, Master," the Five answered, putting fists to palms and bowing their heads.
"Good. Now go."
The Five quickly turned and left, excited at who might be chosen.
"This is hard for you," Shifu said once they were out of earshot. Shai glanced down at him to meet his concerned gaze. "Isn't it?"
She sighed and nodded, "Yes. And it is for you as well."
This time, it was Shifu's turn to sigh and nod. "Who do you think it will be, Shai?"
"I don't think it will be any of them, to be honest."
Shai chuckled when Shifu looked at her in confusion.
"I mean, you never know," she continued as she walked off, "The universe might choose someone from the crowd; we will never know who it is until Master Oogway points at them."
Master Shifu continued to stare at Shai Lung as she left - in both confusion and disbelief.
"He has five of the best Kung Fu students in the Jade Palace to choose from," he thought as Shai disappeared around a corner, "Surely he will choose one of them."
