Never Quite Eden
By SMYGO4EVA

Everything settled down, for once.

Swindler sat down in the foldup chair, easing in gently, her leg propped up in a bulky cast on a stool. She winced in discomfort, but the pain ebbed away. Brother and Sister were asleep on the couch, with blankets keeping them warm.

Her form ached, her leg was broken, and she was a fugitive in the eyes of the law, an Akudama. But it was worth it to see the kids safe.

"You alright?"

Swindler looked up, and saw Courier's sullen, exhausted face looking down at her.

He too looked worse for wear, bandages on his face, arms, and hands. But he lived, he survived.

They've been in hiding ever since they escaped Kansai, which was three days ago. It felt a lot shorter. Swindler assured the kids everything will be normal again soon. It was easier said than done, but she had to say something.

They had shelter in Courier's place, where no one could find them, but it was to be temporary. They had to get away, but rest and recovery took top priority.

The children were top priority.

"I've been better, Courier. But, for what it's worth, I'm glad you're still here. I'm glad you're still alive."

Swindler smiled softly, a lump forming in her throat, and she settled back into her chair.

Courier blinked, and then he let out a tired sigh.

"Well, I'm glad that you're here as well."

Swindler felt her cheeks turn warm, and she closed her eyes, waiting for sleep to arrive.

"Thank you…"

They were here, they were alive, and they had each other.

It wasn't perfect, it wasn't Eden, but it was enough, just for now.
