A/N: This is my first Star Trek 2009 story so I apologize if there is any mistakes that you may find they are all mine. And if you find that Spock is a bit OCC then I guess I have a answer. Spock is a Cadet in this story and he is just starting to find himself so he won't exactly be talking like an adult wise Vulcan. Or maybe he would and I am just trying to come up with an excuse. Also for all the people who are triggered by Midwest stereotypes you probably don't want to read this. Thanks for your time. - Countdrizzle

Spock was leaving his first class and was going to his Grandmother's office at the Academy focused on intercepting her before she left for Headquarters. As Chief of StarFleet Operations she was the person who made sure that StarFleet ran as smoothly as possible. But even though her schedule was hectic she made sure that she taught every single Earth history class. It was admirable of her to do so, she had vast knowledge of history and when he was a boy he would listen to her tell some story from history. He enjoyed it vastly because he only saw his Grandmother and his cousins during the summer when they were on break and during the winter holiday season. When he was at his childhood home on Vulcan he had no such talks about Earth with any of his parents. His mother tried; he knew that but his father was adamant that he was raised to follow Vulcan tradition only and learning about Earth would impede on that. But when they were on Earth he had no power whatever his Grandmother said went and so when she wanted to teach him about Earth she did and his father could do nothing about it. Along with her extra duty as professor she was also the Pastor at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He went with his Grandmother, cousins, and Captain Pike every sunday to hear her sermons not because he believes in the mythological religion like they do but because it is always nice to hear his grandmother tell stories about the history of Earth half of his home. Then afterwards they go out to what they call 'brunch' at a local diner and just talk like a family. That is what he enjoys most about Earth. So when he walked to her office she was packing up her bag and talking to her TA fourth year cadet Cadet Harrison. He wasn't quite fond of the Cadet; he once heard highly inappropriate things about his Grandmother that were offensive. He brought this up with her one time and she just shrugged it off and told him.
" His position as my TA is the hardest TA position at the Academy. I teach the classes but he writes the syllabus, makes the slides, grades all the papers and exams by himself, and runs my office hours. And he is so good at it that he can say whatever he wants about me he earned it." That was another thing about her that he was almost jealous of, she was very forgiving and rarely ever takes things personally. Vice Admiral Kristen Grayson can have a hot temper at times and she will ' chew you up and spit you out' but she will always forgive you.
" Hey Spock whatcha doin here?" And there is another thing about his Grandmother that he is absolutely fond of, her Midwest accent.
" It is necessary that I talk with you." She looked at her TA and nodded to him as a farwell.
" Ope sorry Harrison I'll be right back as long as those stop and go lights don't screw up my schedule again." Harrison nodded and continued on with his work. Spock also heard that Harrsion had to search up a dictionary for midwest slang when he first got the job. Spock's mother Amanda lost most of her accent when she went to college as a way for people to take her more seriously but sometimes when she's tired or mad she slips right back into it. It thoroughly amuses Spock. Not that she notices that of course he made sure that she never knew.
" You betcha Spock, how about we go up yonder and you can walk me to my office?" Spock gave his agreement before they started to walk. He was silent at first, he had not a clue on how to broach the subject. Though he was never as grateful as she is now that his Grandmother could read him so well.
" Is it about your pop? I know that he wasn't exactly pleased when you left for the Academy but he seemed almost mad when you stayed for your second semester." It was true the semester started and it seemed that his father thought after his first semester that Spock would see how illogical it was and drop out. He could be further from the truth for the first time in his life no one saw him as anything other than Vulcan. On Earth they couldn't tell the difference and that pleased him immensely.
" Yes Grandmother, he who is my father is part of what I wished to speak to you about. Mother seemed to be quite distressed when I spoke with her last. Though I believe it is beneficial for me to stay on Earth and enroll at StarFleet Academy I do not wish to do so if she will be ill." Kristen kept walking but her head turned to look at him. Her face was blank while she thought.
" She wants you to be where you want Spock, wherever makes you happy. And if StarFleet and Earth makes you happy then she's happy. Though like you said there were some things your parents had to work through when you left even more when you stayed. But don't you worry about them, they're fine." Spock thought for a moment, still walking alongside his Grandmother before he spoke.
" Grandmother fine has variable definitions, fine is unacceptable." Spock found himself briefly thinking back to when he said the same thing to his mother.
" Trust me son for a marriage fine is the golden goose egg." Spock raised an eyebrow at his Grandmother's odd comment.
" Oh put that down would ya?" And Spock did as he was told. She paused for a moment before continuing. " You know Spock, your father does love you and your Mother." Once again Spock raised his eyebrow but this time it was entirely involuntary.
" I highly doubt that. Father is a Vulcan, a true Vulcan he is logical not emotional." Kristen rolled her eyes at his comment.
" Now that is the largest load of cow crap I have ever heard. I know your Father, son. I let my daughter marry him. If I wasn't a hundred percent sure that Sarek loved her I wouldn't have let him marry her. Vulcan, Human, Andorian, whatever it wouldn't have happened." For the first time in many years Spock had a large urge to laugh.
" Yes, because you can persuade my mother to do something after she made up her mind to do the opposite." Kristen Grayson laughed at her Half Vulcan grandson's use of sarcasm.
" Alright you might have a point there pal. But back to the point he does and I know it and your mother knows it. But Sarek always wanted you to be the perfect Vulcan and I know why but it was wrong of him. Not just because he set the bar way too high but also because that meant he ridded you of the chance to actually see who he is." Spock's steps faltered for a second.
" I- I do not believe I understand." Kristen gave her grandson a sad smile before explaining.
" You don't know this but your father has a great sense of humor. And you really don't know this part of him but he always brags about you in his own way. Even after you joined StarFleet he would always be like ' my son is the top of his class.' or ' my son did his Vulcan wilderness test thing before he was of age.' you know stuff like that." Spock raised his eyebrow in humor at his Grandmother's impression of his father. But after what she said sunk in he suddenly became depressed. Of course none of the people around them knew that but his Grandmother did.
" I'm sorry that you missed out on all that Spock. But he's going to figure it out someday as I hope that you will, you are the first person of your kind. You're not Vulcan so you can't totally act like one. Just like you are not Human so you cannot fully act like one as well. But Spock, here's the problem you and your father keep running into. You can not be what Vulcan wants you to be, you are never going to be a purebred Vulcan. So instead of expecting you to act like you are, you should be expected to act differently. Spock I'm not sure that I am explaining this right, but you can be anyone you want because you are the one raising the bar. No one else but you. So if you want to act like a full Vulcan go ahead but I want you to remember that there is a part of you that is human because you never know one day it might just save your life." With that she was about to say her goodbye but then she paused. Like actually paused so that everyone who was walking behind them was forced to quickly turn before they ran into them.
" And before I go I just wanted you to know if you do choose to let a bit of your human side out you should know a big part of that is making friends. A friend that you aren't related to and if you're interested I have a good candidate." Spock thought about her suggestion before agreeing.
" I am interested." His Grandmother smiled the biggest smile Spock had ever seen her produce before she yelled.
" Thank the Lord I actually got through to you." Spock momentarily thought to walk away after that but she spoke before he got the chance.
" It's Chris, he's lonely. On Sundays he does the same thing you do, you know, go just so you can go to brunch after." She looked at him and smiled again.
" Did you know that his dad taught comparative Religion at his high school. He said that his father wasn't the most supportive of his decision to join the Fleet. Kind of like Sarek. And I know that he is quite fond of you." Spock thought before he nodded.
" I was unaware that the Captain was lonely, he always seems to have a group of officers or cadets surrounding him. Though as you taught me not everything is what it seems."
" Well I'm glad you listened." That was all she said before she turned and left him behind. Spock started to walk again after the cadets around him got upset that he was standing in the middle of the hall. Without the presence of a high ranking officer they seemed to have found their voice. So Spock was surprised when he found himself standing outside the Captain's office. Not one to waste an opportunity Spock requested access to the room. When he walked through the door he was faced with the view of the small office the Captain shared with Professor Cunningham. The Professor wasn't there though, just the Captain.
" Spock! Come in son." Spock couldn't help but stiffen at the term. Though his Grandmother calls him by the title quite often it is different when you are not related to the person calling you the said title.
" Captain, I heard you were looking for a companion to rid you of your loneliness." Captain Pike froze in the middle of standing up and looked up at the Cadet frozen with shock. After a minute and forty two seconds he finally spoke.
" Ah Spock not that I am not um don't appreciate the offer. Well uh that's uh exactly true either um. See I just don't um swing that way, if you know what I mean." Spock stood there confused before he asked.
" So you are not looking for what my Grandmother refers to as a 'friend'?" Then the Captain looked relieved though Spock still isn't sure why.
" Oh you weren't? Oh thank god. Um no what, yes I guess I am looking for a friend." Then a smile slowly forms on Pike's face.
" A lot of people just hang out with me because they think that I will give them something in return. So I guess that's why I like to hang out with you and your Grandma because you would never do something like that and Kristen can get anything she wants if she really puts her mind to it." Though Spock thought the Captain was oversharing he decided not to interrupt him.
" Hey Spock, do you drink?"
" If you are asking if I partake in alcoholic beverages then no. Alcohol does not affect me as it does Humans." After Spock spoke he paused, remembering his Grandmother's advice. " Full Humans." Chris gave him a smile before patting him on the shoulder.
" Well then son I am going to introduce you to the wonders of 25 year old MaCallan. I've been saving up for a special occasion and I can not think of a better occasion than the start of a new friendship." Spock looked at where the Captain touched him and hid his uncomfort.
" A MaCallan Sir?" Spock questioned, confused.
" Scotch Spock. It's scotch."
" Ah" Chris sighed before leading him out of the door. And there a great friendship was born.
