Chapter 1: It's not easy
(Narrator POV)
For a long time Olivia has never trusted someone completely. Only two people who even got close were Fin and Elliot. And Elliot lost her trust when he left a year and a half ago. Now all she had was Fin. Every night she went home to an empty apartment with two day Chinese takeout in the refrigerator. Casey and Alex tried their hardest to help their friend because she was so lonely ever since Elliot left. She wouldn't even go out for a nice time meet some guy and hook up. She went to work and went home. That's it. Around 11 o'clock at night Olivia heard pounding on her door. "Casey, Alex, what's going on? It's getting late."
"It is only 11 pm on a Friday night that's equivalent to 6 in the evening. We set you up on a blind date, tomorrow at 6:30. You can't say no either." Alex asserted.
"Yes I can, and I will- no! I'm good, plus you guys know the narrative, I say hi I'm Olivia I'm a sex detective how are you? And they all run. So I'll pass, this is like the third time this month you guys have tried this."
"He already knows that. We made you a profile which tells the a lot about you. He selected you. We didn't choose him, although I think we would have because he's hot." Casey added.
"Really? Can I see?"
"You do know what a blind date is? Well it's blind for you. He knows a little about you, and what you look like."
"You both know this stuff isn't easy. I can't just go out and have men fall over me like you two."
"Because you never get out! And when you do. You where baggy clothing, people at work talk about how hot you are all the time. You just have to get out there sometimes." Casey tried to help her friend.
"Fine, I'll go but if AND when this date fails, I expect lots of ice cream- chocolate, a sad movie, and you two to leave me alone for at least three months."
"Deal, well we will see you tomorrow!"
They left to go have fun, while Olivia drowned in her loneliness.
Next day at work...
"Hey cap, Uhh- I have a date tonight at 6:30. This will only be a one time thing I promise-"
"You don't sound to excited about this date..."
"Casey and Alex put me up to it. You know me I like to be reserved in my own world. I just don't like to get my hopes up for anyone or anything anymore."
"You have good friends Olivia. You should get out more often, don't lose all hope. And Casey and Alex told me already."
"Oh okay, well I'm gonna head out. My phone will be on the whole time. Anything comes up, call me."
"I will not do that. But only if you're really needed. Have a good time. There is more to life than this job." Olivia nodded then walked out. Said goodbye to everyone. Once she got home she decided to wear some casual clothes. A nice black leather jackets over a grey blouse, with black leather like legging-pants. And black heals. Hopefully she isn't underdressing. She heard Casey and Alex at the door.
"It's open!" She heard them murmuring about what they thought she was gonna wear.
"Wow Liv, you look great. I don't think I've seen you curl and wear makeup in forever. Not that you need it but I love your hair."
"Thanks Casey! I think I'm ready. I hope I am not wasting my time." Casey and Alex dropped her off at the restaurant and watched through the window as she met the man. Making sure their best friend wasn't with some weirdo.
She stood nearby while she waited for her mystery man to find her. Next thing she saw was a very tall black male standing in front of her. In a polo, jeans, and sneakers. Nice brown-hazel eyes, nice hair, nice everything. "Hello, I'm Edgar. You must be Olivia?" He shook her hand.
"Yes I am. Nice to meet you." She smiled brightly.
"If I may say you look as beautiful as your picture. Our table is over here." He guided her. Pulled out her chair then proceeded to sit in his own. "You ever been here before?"
"A few times, just with a couple of friends years ago. Tell me about yourself."
"I am a lawyer, who's friends send him out on blind dates because he likes to keep to himself." He joked.
"We have that in common, well the last part. I'm a detective for the NYPD as you probably know since my friends put that on my profile." The waiter came and asked about drinks and appetizers, Olivia went with a glass of water. And Edgar went with a nice glass of red wine. No appetizers.
"You don't drink?" Edgar asked.
"I do, but I'm on the clock. So I can't. But you enjoy."
"Okay, what's one thing I should know about you?" Edgar could sense how reserved she was, she would be a tough to open up.
"I'm exactly as I seem, I can't really think of anything." She didn't know what to say. She couldn't say anything she wanted to say. She became very awkward and uncomfortable not because of Edgar but because they were just staring at each other now.
"Am I making you uncomfortable Olivia?"
"No, I'm sorry. I'm not good at this." She used her hands to gesture that she meant them.
"I'm not either. I haven't been on a date in four years. I'm just here to get to know you and hopefully by the end of the night I'll have your number. Because I'm gonna be straightforward, you are a very attractive lady and once I get to know I'm sure you're a whole package. With an amazing personality."
"Oh wow, thank you. It's not easy getting back out there after so long. My relationships never workout because of my job. I'm sure you can understand."
"I completely understand, but they are missing out." He flashed a smile. Which eased Olivia's nerves. They finished their dinner and by the end of the night Edgar had Olivia's phone number. Outside the restaurant Edgar took Olivia's hands. "I want to do this again sometime. I wanna make this work. I know you said with work it would be hard. But I want to do this again." They started walking down the sidewalk towards the park.
"Me too! You have my number, you should give it a call sometime. I had a really nice time tonight. Thank you." It was starting to get chilly with the wind blowing, so he did the gentleman thing to do and gave her his jacket. "You know it's cold out here."
"I do but you need it more than I do. Are you being picked up? Catching a cab?"
"Ya know they never told me that. I think they were assuming you take me to your house and get laid." They laughed.
"I can drop you off at home if you'd like?"
"Sure." The started to head back to the restaurant parking garage. "Wow nice car! Must be that good lawyer money."
"You'd be correct. Where to?" Olivia gave him the address and her drove her home by 9:30. At her door he took his coat. "Have a goodnight Olivia!" He leaned in to kiss her temple. Which made her cheeks all rosy.
"Have a goodnight, Edgar!"
