She sat holding his hand and staring at his bruised and battered face. She felt his presence before she saw him. "Hi."
"Is he ok?" Grissom briefly let his gaze flick from Sara to Greg.
"He'll be ok." She said softly.
"And you?" He knew that Sara and Greg were close and he hated seeing one of his team hurt never mind two of them. "Are you ok?"
"I'm not the one in a hospital bed." This time Sara didn't look at him and kept looking at Greg's hand.
Grissom hovered awkwardly in the door as if he was trying to make a decision, he glanced at Greg who was clearly unconscious so he walked further into the room and placed his hand on Sara's shoulder before leaning down and placing a kiss on the crown of her head. "He's your friend."
"Are you ok?" Sara throws the question back at him and he makes a non-committal sound.
"Gil." She reaches up with her free hand and places it on top of the one on his shoulder.
"I'll be ok when I know you both are." Grissom moves his hand from her shoulder and caresses her cheek "I'll be back later." He gives Sara one more kiss on the head before walking out the room. Sara watches him leave before looking back and seeing one of Greg's eyes staring at her.
"Hey" She smiles nervously at him.
"How long have been unconscious?" Greg tells her with a hint of amusement in his voice. "Or did I hit my head because I think I'd remember…."
"You saw all that?" Sara cuts him off.
"Yeah."
"Ok." She doesn't pull her hand away but looks away from his graze.
"It's weird hearing you call him Gil." He tries to smirk "Although it would be weirder if you called him Grissom in…"
"I'm not going to hit you because you're hurt but if you finish that sentence, I can't make any promises." She tells him softly, they both know she's joking but Greg throws her a bone and decides not to finish the sentence.
Greg and Sara sit in a comfortable sentence until Greg starts to feel the sleep pulling him once again. He wakes up an hour or two later and is surprised to see Sara still sat by the side of his bed. "You don't have to sit here, I'm sure you've got work to do. Do you know if they processed my vest."
"It's all in hand Greg don't worry about it. All I want to do is make sure you're ok." She gives his hand a reassuring squeeze.
"I'm ok."
She raises an eyebrow at him "Are you?" It's a question that Greg doesn't answer, they both know it'll be a while before Greg's ok physically and mentally.
"Tell me about you and Grissom." Greg tries instead.
Sara laughs and finally lets go of his hand and she sits back in the hard hospital chair. "What do you want to know."
He laughs and then grimaces in pain. "I was expecting you to say no to that question."
"I was expecting you to have forgot what you saw." Sara fires straight back at him.
"Forget something that monumental? I'm more likely to start blasting out Abba in the lab." He laughs again despite the pain it causes him. "How long?"
"A long time."
"That's not an answer. Come on Sara, I'm in pain here." If his eyes weren't almost swollen shut he'd have given her the puppy dog look.
"After I had my little Ecklie enforced break you remember?" He nods, he remembers her suspension. "We got close after that, closer than we already were." She looks and see's he's looking at her intently. "We'd have coffee and breakfast after shift sometimes but nothing happened not right away anyway." She smiles sadly "Then Nick was taken and after that it changed."
Flashback
She saw him standing there and watching as the ambulance went speeding off, she walked up and gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "Hey you." Grissom turns and looks at her, finally letting the mask slip and showing how close he was to losing it. "You look like you could use some breakfast."
"I uh, I don't think…I'm ok." He schools his face into something less revealing. "Nick's going to be ok."
"Yeah." She gives him a look which tells him exactly how not Ok she knows he is. "Maybe I could use some breakfast."
Grissom doesn't respond until Sara goes to walk away. "Sara?" He see's her stop and turn around. "Yes." He see's her smile that big gap tooth smile. "Same as always?" She nods at him.
… … … … …. …
Sara's sipping her coffee 100% convinced Grissom isn't going to show up when she see's him walk in and look around, she lifts her hand and waves at him with a smile. "I didn't think you were going to show." She tells him as he sits down.
Grissom lifts his eyebrows and looks her directly in the face. "Neither did I."
"Why did you?" She asks him softly.
"We almost lost Nick today." He states it as though it's a daily occurrence.
"We almost lost you today as well." Sara points out. "But your both still here." She reaches out and squeezes his hand. He takes hold of it as she goes to pull away.
"I don't want to lose anyone else." It's typical vague of Grissom but Sara understands what he's actually saying even if she's confused by the meaning behind it.
"I'm not going anywhere Griss." They eat their breakfasts in relative silence after that.
Once they're done he pays (he never lets her pay) and walks her to her car. She stands awkwardly by the door as he can't quite look her in the eye, there's a mixture of confusion and pain on his face. Sara recognises the look. It's the look he has when he's struggling to find the words, usually words that are going to hurt her. Finally he looks up at her. "I keep thinking what if you were in that box." This surprises her. "I don't think I'd know what to do if you were missing."
"You'd find me. Like you found Nick." She offers him a reassuring smile and she believes the statement, whilst she's confused about his feelings towards her, she knows nothing would stop him trying to find her if she, or anyone on their shift, went missing.
"You honestly believe that?" He looks her in the eye.
"Grissom." She says firmly "I honestly believe that you wouldn't stop until you found me or anyone else on the team if they went missing. Even Hodges."
"Maybe not Hodges." He finally smiles before in a moment of bravery he reaches up cups her jaw and places the softest of kisses on her lips. "The thing that was in my head the most was it could've been you in that box and if we didn't find you I would've never got to do that."
It wasn't quite the big romantic gesture she'd always imagined but then, it's Grissom. He's always been more understated when it comes to expressing his feelings.
End Flashback
"You spaced out a little there." Greg smirked as best he could and Sara just shrugged in response. "You guys are keeping it secret?"
"There's a policy against us being together, one of us would have to move shifts" She says softly.
"I won't tell" Greg tells her sincerely, partly because he thinks she might be right. There's so many drugs going through his system at the moment it's entirely possible that he's going to forget everything that happened here today anyway.
… … … … … …
She closed the door quietly and crept towards the kitchen where she could hear his voice talking to the dog. She leant against the kitchen Island and watched as he made dinner. She saw his shoulders relax and she knew he was aware of her presence even if Hank was the one that reacted first when he trotted over to be greeted with some vigorous ear scratches before going back over to Grissom to sit next to him and hope for table scraps. Sara smiled as he passed down some chunks of carrot to the dog. "You know I remember bringing you home from the shelter and someone being very sure that we weren't going to do that." Sara said to the dog who was still looking at Grissom and she couldn't help but smile, the dog loved them both but his loyalty at anyone time was always with the one that had the food.
"I was also pretty sure that you weren't going to be sleeping on the bed but it definitely wasn't Sara I was spooning when I woke up." Grissom still hadn't turned around and directed his light hearted response at the dog who just cocked his head not really understanding what his master was saying.
Sara walked around the counter and ghosted her hand lightly over Grissom's lower back not quite making contact (that wasn't part of the game) and lifted herself onto the island behind Grissom. They settled into a comfortable silence with the only sounds being Grissom cooking what smelled like some kind of Italian dish.
Finally he turned around "Hi dear. Try?" He lifts the spoon containing some kind of sauce towards her.
"Perfect." She smiles at him and he returns the smile before turning back towards dinner. "Greg's ok Nick's sitting with him for a while." Grissom makes some kind of positive sound as he pulls some garlic bread out of the oven. "He uh… Greg knows about us." He turns around but doesn't let her see what he's feeling about the news. "He saw us. It's ok he's not going to tell."
"Ok."
"That's all you're going to say about it?" She though he'd have a bigger reaction to someone learning about their relationship.
"Is there something I should say about it?" He was confused, how did she want him to react?
"I just thought you'd be more upset."
"You said he's not going to tell anyone." The tone in his voice suggested Grissom thought the meaning behind his words was obvious, a look at her face told him he wasn't being clear about it. "You trust Greg and I trust your judgement."
"Really?" It hasn't always been the case and she see's that he understands that's what she's really saying.
"Yeah." He's always trusted her judgement. "Always." If he's learned anything in this relationship it's that sometimes he needs to say what he's actually feeling instead of hiding it behind his other words.
