As Kate walked into her apartment after a long day, she got the feeling that she wasn't alone. She flipped on the light and set her purse down. She was extremely freaked out, and considering leaving and calling her girlfriend. Her hands were shaky as she turned around, slowly reaching for a knife. She grabbed the biggest one she could find, then slowly made her way to the back of the apartment. Sure enough, there was a large man going through a box in the living room. Kate was trembling, but she refused to give up, to admit to her badass NCIS girlfriend that she couldn't even take on a random burglar.
"Hands up," she said in a warning tone. The man turned around and slowly lifted his gun towards her. Kate was terrified now, but there was no turning back. She was on her own. "Put your hands up," she repeated. Then the man lunged towards her, and in a loud, bloody instant it was over. The man was laying on the floor, bleeding out. The gun had went off, landing a bullet in the wall behind her. Kate wasn't even sure if she was injured or not. She stood still for a long time, until the door burst open.
"HPD. Hands up," an officer said. Kate hadn't moved for maybe five minutes, but she slowly put her hands up.
"Don't shoot," she whispered.
"Come towards me. Slowly. You live here?" one officer said, as the other went over to the body.
"He, I, I," Kate said, before collapsing to the floor in a pile of tears.
"Shh. Just tell me what happened, okay? You can call me Officer Morrison," he said gently. Kate sniffled a little and looked away.
"I, um, I just got home from work, and, um, I thought I heard something so I grabbed the knife," she began, crying a little.
"Okay, so you grabbed your knife, and you went into the living room?" he asked.
"Well, yeah. I thought I was being paranoid, but I wanted to be sure," she said quietly. Officer Morrison nodded, then looked over to the other officer.
"She killed him," he said quietly. Kate paled.
"He-he broke in! He lunged at me, the gun even went off! I was scared, it was self-defense!" she protested.
"Okay. But we still have to prove it, okay? And if you cooperate, it'll be a lot easier. Okay? Put your hands behind your back, we're taking you in," the second officer said. He pulled out his handcuffs, ready to arrest her.
"Wait! I get a phone call. I want that first," she replied.
"You can call whoever you want once you're at the station. Let's go," he said, firmly putting the cuffs on her. Kate was in tears as they led her out of the building.
