Prologue:
"Nothing is wrong with him ma'am."
"What? Are you sure?"
The two turn as the little four year old reaches out at nothing. They can see him staring as if something is really there.
"Play?" The four year old asks then blinks as if seeing something confusing. He turns to see the doctor and his mother looking at him. "Friend!" He gestures to the same spot of where no one is.
"You see? There has to be something going on." The mother insists as her son turns back to the same empty space. She watches him track something invisible that moves around him. "This has been going on even when he was a little baby. We tried writing it off as an imaginary friend. But something rubs me the wrong way about that idea."
"It could be mental. Or it really could be just an imaginary friend. Does he have any friends?"
"We've tried. He prefers to play with whatever he sees. Any kid who stays around longer than the others gets spooked off by his behaviour." The mother crosses her arms over her chest as she watches her son continue to focus on the invisible thing.
"Well he really is perfectly healthy. Try waiting until he is closer to a teen. If it continues then I would suggest trying the mental health clinic. That is all I can do."
"Thank you doctor for at least seeing him." The mother picks her son up and carries him away. "Hopefully you grow out of this." She mentions as her son keeps trying to play with what he is seeing, that is now over her shoulder. She can only hope however as she has no way to explain his behavior.
