November 11th, 2020- Berk, Minnesota

It was a typical day, with the same typical schedule being kept up. Harrison Haddock performed his usual routine, same as any day before (regardless of school). At exactly 5:20 he woke up and left his house. By 5:25 he was at the corner of the street, heading down the least occupied street for a jog. At approximately 5:50, he returned home from his jog and ran upstairs to grab a change of clothes.

He showered at 6:00 , brushed his teeth and combed his hair at 6:15. Around 6:30, he had a light breakfast while conversing with his father on his latest case at the BCPD. By 6:50, he was in his 2015 Audi A5 Coupe and driving towards Viking Peak High School. He'd arrive at 7:00 and make his way to his first class, Advanced Literature. There he'd sit in the back corner next to the window and wait for fifteen minutes until everyone else arrived. By 7:10, his best friends Fred and Thomas would arrive, and they'd talk for five minutes before the class began.

But today things felt different. His normally straightforward schedule was shifted by something , an unforeseen event. At lunch that day, he finished his meal and threw away the trash, then opened up his Chemistry book to study today's lesson. As he sat in the school courtyard, unbothered by anyone else, he felt it. The sky had turned gray overhead, which wasn't normal. The weather was set to be clear today after all.

Trying to ignore that for the most part, he simply pulled the hood of his jacket over his head and carried on. Until a thump drew his attention away from the book and over to the ground. He saw it then, being surprised by the sudden appearance of the random book. It was thin, and had a leather back to it. He could barely make out what was written on the cover from his position. He shrugged. "Someone will claim to eventually." He said as he gathered his belongings and headed inside.

He had far more to worry about than a random book, which for all he knew could house an entire colony of various germs and bacteria. Though, even as he walked away he felt drawn to it. He'd ignore that feeling for now, in favor of getting to his Chemistry class. Whatever Mr.Caulder had planned for the day, he knew from students in earlier classes that it would be intense. Intense for most at least- but not for the smartest student in school.

He smirked as he thought of that title, it truly was well earned. Harrison really began thrusting himself into his studies after his mother's passing, similar to how his father had been submerged in his police work in recent years. They hadn't handled her passing very well, but still soldiered on through it all.

Passing the threshold into the school, he noticed a girl looking at him from the corner of her eye as he walked by. He felt his face flush a reddish tint as he realized who it was. She'd been in several classes with him every year since fourth grade. Astrid was her name, Astrid Hofferson. He'd shared classes with her for years, and still barely spoken a word to her. It was a shame really, as he harbored a large crush on the girl.

He kept walking, leaving those hopeless thoughts behind for the time being. His focus for now was Chemistry, and not between him and his crush.

By the time the day ended, Harrison was making his way out of the front doors near the courtyard, ignoring the comments from a couple of girls that were conversing nearby.

"He's cute and smart. Maybe give it a shot?" One of them, who he'd recognized as Heather Oswaldsdottir said.

"No way Heather, he never dates anyone." The blonde responded, a girl by the name of Cami Bogburn.

He was walking towards the parking lot when the same book from before caught his eye. He didn't know exactly what it was that led him over to it, but he still picked it up. Reading over the cover, he found the words 'Death Note'...an odd title for a book, but interesting nonetheless. Maybe this would make for a good read later on.

Stowing the book into his bag, he kept on going until he reached his car and took off from the school.

Later that night, as he wrapped up his homework, he sat down in boredom. "What to do...what to do.." he wondered aloud, then looked over at the stack of books and papers he'd taken out of his bag earlier. That book was on top of them all. Shrugging, he picked it up and popped it open.

"Couldn't hurt to read." He said with a small chuckle. Reading over the first page alone, he felt an eerie feeling creeping up on him. "The human whose name is written in this note shall die." His eyes widened slightly at this first line of what appeared to be a set of rules.

"What in the hel…" he wondered for a moment, but pressed on. "This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected." He set the book down, still open and pondered who could've created it. It didn't make sense to him, Harrison simply took it as a lame attempt at a joke in all honesty.

"Interestin read isn't it?" An unbelievably creepy voice said from the darkness of his room. Harrison fell out of his chair, feeling his heart beginning to race as a large figure shifted near his desk.

"W-what the hel are you?!" He asked as the creature stepped into the light of his desk lamp. The first thing he saw was the being's piercing green eyes, almost reptilian in nature. The second thing he saw, was it's charcoal black skin, which carried a scale pattern. And yet, the creature had a humanoid shape. There were various spikes protruding from its back, and some strange points on its head that went towards the back of his head, shaping his face.

"Hello there...now I want you to keep calm-"

"H-how the hell am I supposed to be calm?!? What are you?!?" He shouted as he scrambled away from the creature, soon finding his back hitting the closet door behind him. He rushed to his feet and grabbed at the baseball bat in the corner of his room, holding it up as a weapon.

The creature shrugged in response as he moved over the desk, peering down at the open book. "Fair enough...let's just get straight to it, shall we?" He asked, turning to look at Harrison with a smile that sent shivers down the seventeen year old's back. "My name is Toothless...and I am a Shinigami." He explained, causing Harrison's heart to face even faster than before.

"I-I….w-what? T-those aren't r-real…" he stuttered, struggling to find the words needed to properly convey what he was feeling in the moment. The creature, or Toothless, let out a wild cackle upon hearing that.

"Is that what they tell you? Well, I suppose it's understandable. It's rare anyone's ever seen us after all...now, don't worry kid. I'm not here to kill you." He said, watching as Harrison hesitantly brought down his bat.

"See, I dropped my book- this book to be exact. I was searching for it for a while now, but it seems you picked it up before I could get down here." He said, coming off as being honest in his speech. Harrison couldn't tell whether he was lying or not. "And ...since you did pick it up...it's yours."

This took the young man aback "M-mine?!! What?!?" He asked as he slowly walked over to him. "What are yo- what do you mean mine?" He asked, his fear only increasing further as each second went by.

"I mean, it's yours. And it's not a joke if you were wondering. You see, this is a Death Note. Oh, it's quite powerful, we use them all the time."

"For what?"

"Death, obviously. We are death gods after all. We collect lives, and add people's life spans to our own. It's quite fun, keeps us from losing our minds. You see, our world is just so...dull and drab. So boring, gah I hate it. We need some excitement, and my excitement comes from this book." He said, a smirk coming to his scaly face as he looked over at Harrison. "And I think, you can use some excitement of your own."

"You think I'd get a kick out of using a book to kill people? Okay, first off- I still don't buy it. I think there's a gas leak making me hallucinate. Second, what kind of sicko do you think I am?" Harrison asked as Toothless chuckled.

"That's the beauty of it all Harrison. I know you're not sick, and I know you don't believe me. So...why not try it out?" He asked, watching as the man's shoulders dropped.

"W-what? Try it out?" He repeated, making sure he'd heard him right.

Toothless nodded before lifting the blinds of Harrison's window and pointing outside. Harrison looked over at what he was pointing out, and watched in horror as a man was striking a woman with all his might.

"See that man? You've got his face, but no name...I can help with that ya know." Toothless said as he towered over Harrison. Harrison looked up at him, still pondering what to do next.

"I-I can't kill someone…"

"Not even someone who deserves it? Look at him Harrison. He's undeserving of life...a rapist, an abuser...a killer even." He said, causing Harrison's head to whip around once again.

"How do you even know that?" He asked, watching Toothless cross his arms.

"I know a lot. I can see a lot as well. I see that man's lifespan, as well as his name...I'll tell you his name, and you can handle things from there...but don't expect many freebies if we do continue this little game." He said, making Harrison rethink things.

{Could I really do this? I mean, he seems to be so honest about all of this, so could I actually end a man's life?} he wondered. His thoughts were interrupted by the screams of the woman below, and he watched as the man prepared to drag her across the street with him. Gritting his teeth, he turned towards Toothless again. "Give me the name."

Toothless smirked at this. "I like the enthusiasm, kid. His name is Trevor Boilson. Have fun, and please be creative. If you don't specify a cause of death, he'll just have a heart attack." He said.

Harrison took a seat at his desk and drew out a pen, scribbling down the man's name on the otherwise blank page. He wanted this to be quick, but precise- and so he scribbled the cause of death.

A moment passed, and he was finding his doubts to be rearing their head again. That was, until the loud horn of a truck came into earshot. He stared out into the road, and watched as an eighteen wheeler came barreling down the street, while Trevor slipped into the road. The collision was brutal, the man's blood and various forms of viscera spraying across the street.

"Holy shit!" Harrison said as he stumbled away from the desk and fell onto the floor, staring at his hands. {Holy Thor, I really did it...I-I just...just killed someone..} he was shaken by the experience, not even moving for a moment as Toothless watched in amusement. He crept over to the downed boy and held out a hand.

"So…" he began, watching as the horrified expression on Harrison's face worsened when making eye contact. "Ready to begin?"

And thus concludes the first chapter of my latest story. A bit short, but all for good reason believe me. Death Note was one of the first anime series I ever viewed, and I figured why not give this a shot? Please, leave some good reviews. And consider this my birthday gift, Exocet to all of you.

See ya later. And updates for Immortals and Triangles and Trebles will come soon!! XOXO
