Hello all! I hope you enjoy this story born of my frustrations with reality and school. I do not own Star Wars, and I get an idea about Tatooine slave culture that is briefly referenced from Double Agent Vader and that story. Most of the chapters will not be this long, I just wanted to dump it all here. Again, this may not be a terribly long story. I just thought it would be fun. No beta, we die like men.
Luke is 5 years old
As Obi-Wan left the house, Beru and Owen had a very important conversation. The man who gave them Luke just told them that Anakin Skywalker and fallen and become Darth Vader, the new menace of the galaxy. Luke Skywalker was his son. Obi-Wan obviously did not want them to tell the child, but he felt it best that they know in case the Empire comes knocking.
"Luke should know the truth. He will find out eventually and will become resentful if he finds out that we kept the truth from him."
Owen held Beru's hands and looked into her eye.
"Of course he should, but we have to take into consideration the fact that Luke wants to know his father. He asks about him all the time. If he knows the truth, what if he takes it upon himself to go to him? That would defeat the purpose of us raising him instead of Vader."
"What if we told it in terms he would understand," Beru thought aloud. "What if we told him he'd become a slave master? He understands those are dangerous people."
"That might work. I'm doubtful though. I think we'll have to be very intentional to show him right from wrong so that when he is older and knows more about the world, he can see just how dangerous Vader is."
The two talked some more, trying to create a fool-proof (and Skywalker-proof) way to tell Luke the truth. Eventually, they called Luke out from his room where he was playing with some toys Obi-Wan brought that might help him learn to control his Force abilities.
"Luke, we need to tell you something," Owen started.
Luke felt their serious nature and was likewise serious.
"Luke, that man that just came over-"
"Ben Kenobi," Owen interjected.
"Right, Ben Kenobi, he told us that he found out your father is still alive, but not under the name Skywalker. He now goes by Vader," Beru finished, sending Owen a glare for interrupting her. It might have been for a good reason, hiding his identity, but it was still rude.
"So my daddy's still alive? Can I find him?" Luke's face was hopeful as his aunt and uncle rarely talked about his father.
"It's more complicated than that, Luke," Owen answered. "He's become a slave master and is a very hateful man. It isn't safe for you to go to him."
"Oh," Luke pondered this new information for a minute. "Would blue milk make him better? It makes me better."
"I don't think so, sweet heart," Beru said gently. "It would take a lot more than blue milk to help him now."
After that, they talked some more about Luke's father, telling him that their friend, who was the one who told them Anakin Skywalker was dead, had false information and wanted to tell the Lars the truth but couldn't face telling Luke himself because the boy reminded him of Anakin and that made him sad. Sometime later (maybe 10 minutes later), they let Luke go back to playing.
"That went better than I thought it would," Owen remarked.
"I figured that wouldn't have ended too poorly," Beru mused. "I am a little surprised at how well he took it, but he's a smart and caring boy. He handled it just fine."
They sat in silence for a little bit, not moving or disturbing the peace and quiet. Eventually, Beru broke the silence.
"Do you think we did the right thing? I was so sure earlier, but now…"
"Now you're having second thoughts?" Owen asked a little sarcastically before turning serious. "I am too, but no matter how Luke deals with this, I think we did do the right thing. He's a lot like his father and telling him the truth is the right thing to do. Now our job is to try to instill good morals, integrity, and good character into him."
Luke is 10 years old
What Owen and Beru did 5 years ago showed Luke that he could trust them to tell the truth. As he learned more about the world, more about right and wrong, and as he learned more about the Empire, he became thankful that they told him who his father was. They didn't have to, and it was dangerous because of who Vader was, but it showed Luke that they trusted and respected him. So, when Luke was ten, he returned the favor.
"Uncle Owen?"
"Yes, Luke?"
"I keep seeing a girl in my dream, and she lives in a palace. Why do I keep seeing her?"
Owen and Beru sent each other a quizzical glance, and Owen answered, "I don't know. I could ask Ben Kenobi, but I don't know if he'll know. Do you interact with her?"
"Sometimes," Luke answered. "Sometimes I interact with her while she's awake and sometimes when she's asleep. Sometimes, when she's asleep, she can interact with me when I'm awake. It's odd. I don't think dreams do that."
Now Owen and Beru became alarmed.
"No, dear, I don't think dreams do that," Beru responded, trying to stay calm. "We'll ask Ben Kenobi tomorrow. Tonight, try to not interact with the girl too much. Be careful."
"Yes, Aunt Beru."
The next evening
"So apparently she's your twin sister, Leia Organa."
Owen and Beru hadn't expected this. When Obi-Wan reluctantly told them about Leia, they were as gob smacked as Luke is now. They harshly questioned him and berated him for not telling them sooner, and they expected Luke to do the same even though they had tried to be honest with him as appropriate to his age. They didn't tell Luke his father's exact crimes he commits as Vader, but they explained why he was bad and how bad he was in terms a young boy growing up on Tatooine could understand.
However, just like when Owen and Beru told Luke about his father, Luke took the news better than expected.
"I have a sister? When can I meet her in person?"
In fact, to their dismay, Luke seemed excited about it. Obi-Wan's explanation that Vader would be able to find the twins faster because of their joined force presence made no sense to Beru and Own, but it does explain his actions in separating them. The two looked at each other, trying to decide who was going to take the lead in this part of the discussion.
Beru decided she would try to explain, and started speaking. "The problem is that, according to Obi-Wan, the evil force users will be able to find you both easier if you come together."
"Because we will be too bright," Luke slouches with discouragement. He notices his guardians' confusion and continues, "Force presences have either brightness or darkness to them, and the stronger the force presence is, the brighter or darker it is. Extremely strong force presences that are good are super bright and vice versa for evil ones."
"Is this something you learned from Obi-Wan?" Owen asked.
"Yes and no," Luke started explaining. "He taught me how to sense force presences to teach me why I needed to learn how to hide mine. Now I can sense strong force presences from anywhere in the galaxy and make sure they can't sense me."
Everyone was silent for a little bit until Owen broke the silence.
"Do not tell Obi-Wan we told you about this. He doesn't want you to know about Leia or your father."
Luke didn't understand, but agreed anyways since he figured his aunt and uncle didn't understand either. They were both very logical people who tolerated no fools. Obi-Wan must have had a foolish reason if they were going against what they wanted. He decided to store this information away and focus on the fact that he had a sister and the fact he can still contact her. How exciting!
Luke is 15 years old
"You took a while. Where were you?" Owen asked as Luke walked through the door late in the evening.
He was sweaty, dirty, and sported small cuts and bruises as if he'd been rolling around in the sand because he wanted to and was in a minor brawl.
Luke pondered how he was going to answer his uncle's question. His aunt and uncle has always been honest with him, but have also wanted him to stay out of trouble (for obvious reasons), so they really wouldn't like what happened. Having anything to do with the Rebellion would be dangerous for them.
"Luke?" His uncle's voice carried a note of warning as his face became more worried.
"Can we talk at dinner?" Luke asked. "I really want to talk to you and Beru about what happened but I know she's off doing something important."
"Of course we can but I expect for you to be honest with us," Uncle conceded. "Go get cleaned up and help me prepare dinner."
Luke started for his room, calling over his shoulder "Of course, Uncle."
After cleaning up, he joined Uncle Owen in the Kitchen to help him prepare dinner. While using his control over the Force to guide him, Luke let himself finally think about what really happened today and how he would tell the people who were basically his parents. They cared for him like he was their son and never lied to him about the truth of the situation when they knew it, and he knew this because of the slight training in the Force that Ben Kenobi gave him. Luke had learned how to shield his mind, meditate, levitate, sense other peoples' emotions, and use the Force to guide his actions from Kenobi, which was a wonderful bedrock to build off of, if Kenobi had been alive to do so. Unfortunately, Kenobi had been captured by Vader while returning from training Leia and had been killed. Luke and Leia were on their own to learn the Force.
While Uncle Owen and Luke were finishing dinner and were setting up the table, Aunt Beru returned home from what she was doing in the city. Luke knew his time had come to explain what trouble he'd gotten in today.
"So, I have something to tell you," Luke began nervously.
"Does it have to do why you were out all day without telling us where you were and then coming home slightly beat up and covered head to toe in sand?" Owen asked, trying to hide his anger now that his worry had faded away.
"Yes," Luke took a deep breath and decided to go for it. "I've been thinking about being involved in the war in some capacity and had been going to Biggs to talk about it. On the way, I saw a slave running from their master and a Rebel was helping the slave by trying to kill the master. I decided to help the slave escape by running in front of the slaver while acting like I was searching for someone."
As Luke was pausing to still his nerves, Aunt Beru spoke up.
"That doesn't sound too bad. In fact, I ought to congratulate you. That action to trip up the slaver probably bought the runaway some time." She paused here, considering her next words carefully. "But how do you know the person helping the slave was a Rebel?"
"Ah. This is the part you two are most likely to get angry about. On my way back from Biggs, that same person pulled me aside into an alleyway to thank me for helping him and to offer a place in the Rebellion. Knowing your hesitancy to join, for good reason, I declined but also said that if I could help free slaves I would do that."
At this pause in Luke's story, Owen sighed. How could either he or Beru be angry doing what both of them have dabbed in for some time?
"We aren't angry at this, Luke. Beru and I have had our fair share in the cause to free people from slavery."
"What do you think I did before you came along, Luke?" Beru smiled softly. "I helped freed slaves get to safety. It is that reason I was in town today."
Luke gaped at the both of them, not expecting this outcome.
Owen spoke up, fearing that Luke's reaction was one of betrayal.
"It is not because we don't trust you that we didn't let you join us. We wanted you to grow up without the cares of the world on your shoulders. We have never hidden our disgust of slavery-"
"Can I help out now that I'm older?" Luke interrupted, excitement and determination radiating from his face.
"I don't say why not Luke." Beru answered him while giving him a hard look for talking over his uncle.
Luke apologized to Owen, but there was a light in his eyes that wasn't there before. The dinner proceeded peacefully for a while, until Owen asked Luke how he wanted to help.
"Well, I'm too young now, but I'd like to eventually help get the freed slaves off Tatooine and onto a planet they can live without fear of being slaves again. I even have a place they could go, if they wished," Luke started to get excited at this while Owen and Beru listened with curiosity. "There's a planet right outside Hutt territory that seems to be untouched by the Empire. I would need to make sure it is safe to live on though."
"That's great, Luke. How will you help now?"
"Oh, right. I was thinking helping get the freed slaves to someone who could get them off planet. My abilities in the Force will help me there. No matter how I do it, I'll be fighting evil and that's good enough for me."
The day ended for everyone else as it usually does, except for 7 people. Leia was communicating with the Rebellion that there was a Force Sensitive on Tatooine who was willing to help free slaves and Luke and his family were practicing drills to help Luke be ready when trouble comes. Yoda, Palpatine, and Vader are affected by this decision. All three of them felt a shift in the Force. Yoda saw that it was because of the Skywalker boy and his declaration to fight evil. After that, he took a nap. He would need his strength to further train the Skywalkers so they could withstand evil. Palpatine threw a fit because he could tell the shift was to undermine his Empire and help the Rebellion. This fit included sending Vader out to more forcefully push back the upstarts that were causing him so much trouble. Vader had a different reaction than both Yoda and Palpatine, since he was making no plans for how to deal with the one who caused the shift. The one who caused the shift was wishing to get rid of slavery and Vader quite agreed with the sentiments, so he contacted Bail Organa after Palpatine dismissed him. Vader wished to destroy slavery like he had promised, and the fulfillment of that promise was long overdue.
Between Luke's 15th birthday and his 20th birthday
During this time, Luke helped many slaves escape to freedom and sometimes had to kill a couple of masters and slavers. Owen and Beru raised him to treat everyone with the same respect and that life is precious, so he didn't like it, but sometimes there are no good answers to a bad problem and so Luke killed some slavers. Uncle Owen did most of the killing though, since he was good with a sniper rifle. Luke also grew in his Force abilities along with his sister, who was becoming busier with her duties as a Rebel spy in Imperial City. Most importantly, Leia worked with an Imperial spy who called themselves The Vengeance, and this spy passed along information that helped the Rebellion put thousands of slavers out of commission. Luke worked with this spy once when The Vengeance gave Leia information on some people in Tatooine.
Luke became a proficient pilot, able to land a ship mostly intact in any scenario (how does he know this? Well, that is a different story than this one). He hoped his father would be proud of him, but Luke can't contact him because his father is Vader, one of the cruelest men alive, second to only the Emperor. When Luke reaches his 20th birthday, his adventures have led him to be a talented mechanic and pilot, as well as a famous vigilante called The Shadow. He had killed hundreds of slavers and slave masters, had freed thousands of slaves on Tatooine, and had harbored 10's of thousands of slaves with his family. The Rebellion had gained a different reputation than it otherwise might have had in a different universe as it became known as a freedom movement, a place where slaves became free, the oppressed have their burden removed, and the hurting are comforted. How did this different come about? Well, you could say that whenever Skywalkers come together to defeat evil, they typically succeed (but one Skywalker by himself will fail (I'm looking at Anakin)).
