{Originally, I thought this story would be 4 chapters MAX. It would just be a brief & sloppy "what-if" universe… Then I started writing and got carried away.}
Chapter 1: The Incident
"You lack hatred, Nami."
Those salssy words shook the blue gummy-shark to the core, as his neck began to crackle under the pressure of a smoll hand.
Just moments earlier, he was having a casual conversation with the pink-haired girl, Yuuna. That-is, until he mentioned becoming friends with Shino. As soon as he mentioned her name, Yuuna's demeaner shifted from bubbly and pleasant, to sinister and threatening.
"Shino's my wife." As the words left her mouth, Yuuna shifted the baguette in her arms to one hand and shot her free hand forward.
Before he could react, an unnatural force pinned Nami to the wall. Although he was the same height at 5-foot 2-inches and roughly an equal build, Nami's gummy shark body was notably weaker than Yuuna. With pointed teeth, a shark tail, and blue-and-white finned hair, he otherwise appeared human. Though weak, Nami's malleable body could deform to avoid minor injuries. Tonight however, this survival technique worked against him as his throat collapsed from Yuuna's tight grip. Struggling to breath, his gargled pleas fell on deaf ears.
"Don't get any ideas. Shino's the love of my life, my number-one wife. You can't take her from me." Yuuna leaned in closer to the teary-eyed shark boy. "Only I can protect her. She loves me, not you… You want to know the difference between you and me?"
Softly speaking into his ear, Yuuna's voice burned into Nami's fading consciousness.
"You lack hatred, Nami."
In one swift movement, Yuuna spun around and released Nami in front of the balcony's stairway. He immediately began gasping for air and stumbled backwards.
Yuuna took a step forward and smiled, "Understand?"
Unable to respond verbally, Nami nodded frantically.
"Good." While turning around, Yuuna shoved the gummy shark backwards.
Without the energy to break his momentum, Nami was launched down the stairs. As-though part of Yuuna's plan, one of her wives was blissfully unaware of the gummy shark falling towards her sharp antlers.
Another day, another chance. The caribou girl nervously stroked her flowing green hair and took a deep breath as Shino approached. Haruka had rehearsed it over-and-over again in her head. This day would be the day Shino finally accepts her proposal.
This small get-together at a fancy art exhibit was the perfect setting. Usually, Haruka could never have afforded such a venue, but the exhibit's owner owed Haruka's… "fan club" some favors. So, she proceeded to book the entire building just for the night. To convince Shino that this was not a date, Haruka invited their friends Yuuna, Oni, Nami, Yuki, Kim, and Myu to come along. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), Myu and Kim were not able to make it.
Nami and Yuuna had disappeared upstairs, probably just enjoying the exhibit, while their bird-friend, Yuki, went over to the kitchen to check on the status of dinner; she has been taking a while…
"Do, do you smell chicken?" Shino asked sniffing around. She was wearing her typical long sleeve turtleneck and plaid skirt. Although Shino was technically human, she recently had a magic accident that gave her cat ears and tail. Embarrassed with the cat girl appearance, she used a magic hat to hide her feline features while in public.
Haruka sniffed the air, "I thought I told the chef to cook us salmon…"
A short yelp rung out from the kitchen, "A."
Facing Shino, Haruka shrugged, "It is probably nothing."
With Shino still fixated on the kitchen, Haruka reached for her hat hoping to steal a glimpse of her cute cat ears again. Shino quickly ducked and covered her hat with her arms.
"No!"
"B-but, they are so cute…"
Looking away, Shino blushed, "No…" She hesitated before asking, "What's so cute about them anyways?"
"They're cat-ears! What do you mean? They are so fluffy and big… and they have white floof-balls that go well with your beautiful brown hair… and-."
"Hazelnut," Shino mumbled.
"Eh?"
As she lowered her arms, Shino returned her eyes to Haruka and clarified, "My hair's color is pink-hazelnut."
"A. I see. I'll remember that."
Awkwardly Haruka continued chatting away, using the small talk to calm her nerves.
Wait, where is Oni? Haruka began looking around frantically.
"Who you looking for?" Shino asked tilting her head.
"Oh, no-one y-." Haruka cut off her words as she made eye contact with an eagerly grinning Oni in the distance.
The fake bush (part of the exhibit) could not hide her red hair, no matter how many shadows she casted over herself. Seeing that she was found, Oni reached out and gave an encouraging thumbs up.
As Shino was about to turn around to follow her gaze, Haruka grabbed Shino's shoulders.
"SHINO!" Haruka blushed.
"W-W-Wa-What?!"
"Um." Failing to regain her composure, Haruka fumbled through several incomplete phrases before stammering out, "You know we've been friends for so long-."
"It's been two weeks!"
"And you have already accepted the love of my wife, Yuuna…"
"I-what?! Wait-."
"And I worked so hard to beat her at Tetris, she gave me permission to ask you again-."
"Wa-wa-wa-wa. Joto-joto-joto-."
"Shino! I love you!" At that, Shino's face turned as red as Oni's hair.
Unexpectedly, Yuki walked out of the kitchen. Behind her, the chef followed carrying a tray of salmon. Seeing the awkward situation, she paused before turning around and shoving the chef back into the kitchen.
Stammering out various sounds Shino struggled to find the words to speak.
To try calming her, Haruka gently clasped Shino's trembling hands, yet she was unsure who's hands were actually shaking the most.
"My deer Shino, will…" Haruka took a deep breath. "Will you be my 7th wi-."
Suddenly cutting-off Haruka, Shino yelled, "LOOK OUT!"
It all happened too fast. One moment, Haruka was confessing her love. The next, Shino had shoved her oblivious friend away. Time seemed to slow for a moment. With her hands stretched out, tears filled the worried cat girl's face. A blurry blue shadow came crushing down over Shino, as her hat was sent flying across the room.
With wide-eyes, Haruka hit the ground. Disbelief distorted her vision. Silence filled the air as she reached forward.
"Shino…" she whispered.
No response.
Haruka grabbed Shino's hand. "Shino!"
Stillness.
"SHINO!" Tears streamed down Haruka's cheeks.
Sprinting over, Oni yelled for Yuki to call an ambulance.
"I would have been fine, hic. You didn't have to… sob I should have been more…"
Losing her fight with the tears, Haruka wept uncontrollably, while Oni began checking for a pulse.
Hearing the commotion, Yuuna peeked over the balcony. With horrified eyes she stumbled backwards. Her trembling knees gave out as she covered her mouth. Restlessly her stomach turned, and her breath rapidly shortened.
"Shino," she whispered. "I didn't mean to…"
Crawling away, she repeated over and over, "I am so sorry. I am so sorry."
