a/n- Okay so this is my first fan fiction! I know divergent is several years old, but I still love it.

This story is in third person limited pov. I'll definitely be doing Tris and Four chapters, but the first few are going to be Tris just while I set up the story.

The idea for this story comes from the movie "Life As We Know It". if you've seen it, you'll notice the similarities, but I'll also be straying from the plot quite a bit.

This story is rated T/M for language and sexual content.

I do not own the rights to Divergent or Life As We Know It, this is just a fun fan fiction.

Prologue - Tris

Music played in the background as Tris flipped through her closet, trying to choose something to wear for her date tonight. Her best friend Christina had set her up with her boyfriend Will's friend, Four.

Tris and Christina met on their first day of high school and had been best friends ever since. Both friends had always wanted to move from Chicago to somewhere on the West Coast, so after graduating from high school, they decided to attend the University of Oregon together. Tris was getting a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with the hopes that she would open her own bakery one day. Christina had always wanted to be a fashion writer, so she was studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Tris and Christina met Will in their third week of college. His dorm room was just down the hall from theirs and one morning Christina ran straight into him while she was rushing to class after having slept late for the third time that week. Christina introduced Will to Tris, and Will introduced them to his roommate Al. The four of them discovered they had a couple things in common between them. They had all moved from Chicago, Will was also a journalism student, and Tris and Al both religiously rooted for the same NHL team, the Chicago Blackhawks, of course. The group spent most of their first year together, hanging out whenever they had a spare moment. Christina and Will's friendship quickly blossomed into romance. It was clear to Tris and Al that the pair were meant to be together.

Al had also begun to develop feelings for Tris, but as much as she cared about him as a friend, she didn't feel that way about him. It was a bit awkward at times, but Al had managed to keep his feelings mostly at bay. That is, until the end of first year. The four friends were attending a massive party to celebrate finishing their first year. Will and Christina had wandered off to find a private corner to be alone, so Tris and Al were left together. Tris had stayed sober, but Al definitely had a few too many drinks. He got a bit too handsy with Tris, and after she asked him to stop multiple times, she shoved him off her and ran to Christina and Will. They were shocked when they heard about Al's behaviour. Al tried to apologize the next day, but Tris didn't want to hear it. That was the last time they saw him. Word on the street was that he had transferred to a different college, but the trio never made any effort to search him out.

From then on it was pretty much just the three of them. Tris liked it that way. Even though Will and Christina were dating, Tris never felt like the third wheel. In fact, she and Will had also become quite close, often meeting up at a sports bar to watch whatever game was on while Christina was somewhere shopping with a couple other girls they had met halfway through second year, Shauna and Marlene.

After Tris, Christina, and Will graduated and received their degrees, they decided to move across the country again, and settle in New York City. Christina had scored an internship at Vogue, Will had been offered an entry level sports writing job with ESPN at their New York office, and Tris would be attending the Institute of Culinary Education's School of Pastry and Baking Arts, which was an 11-month program. Since the three of them were so close, and rent in New York was so expensive, they decided to rent an apartment together in Lower Manhattan.

It was around this time that Christina really started to pressure Tris about her dating life, or lack thereof. Sure, Tris had been on a few dates here and there, casually dated some guys, but she never had anything serious. Christina had been seriously wanting a couple for her and Will to go on double dates with, so it would have been perfect for her if Tris started seeing someone. That's how Tris landed herself searching her tiny closet for something to wear to her date with Four, Will's new friend. Tris didn't know much about Four, besides the fact that he worked for the New York Yankees, because that's where Will met him while conducting a brief interview for his boss.

After selecting an outfit Tris checked the clock on her phone, it read 6:45.

Great, she thought, 15 minutes to touch up my makeup and text Christina. Tris crossed her small bedroom to the full-length mirror that hung on the back of her door. She stood there for a moment, analyzing herself. Tris had chosen a black and white floral wrap minidress with a pair of black 3-inch block heels. Tris had never been one for fashion, but Christina had always made sure her best friend's closet was fully stocked with fashionable clothing and accessories. Tris approved of what she was wearing and leaned in to take another look at her face. Not one for makeup, she was only wearing eyeliner, mascara, and a touch of berry red lipstick.

Checking the time again, Tris saw she only had a couple minutes until Four was supposed to be there, so she grabbed her purse and her leather jacket and headed out into the living room to sit and wait. Will and Christina were out tonight, so she had the place to herself. Tris pulled out her phone and sent off a quick text to Christina to let her know she was ready and would give her details after. Her best friend had been very excited for Tris to go on this date and had been a bit dejected when she realized she wouldn't be able to be there to help Tris get ready. Truthfully, Tris wasn't too upset that Christina wasn't going to be around before the date. She loved her best friend to pieces, but Tris was sure Christina would have insisted on heels 2 inches higher and 3 more layers of makeup.

Tris picked up one of Christina's magazines off the coffee table and settled into the armchair by the window while she waited for Four to arrive. Tris glanced at the clock on the wall and saw Four was already 15 minutes late. She was a very punctual person, and she became very jittery when she had to wait around for other people to arrive. She tried to distract herself with the magazine in her hand, but that wasn't doing much good, so she stood up and started picking up the few stray items around the apartment. There wasn't much to clean, just a stray jacket here, an empty glass there. When she had run out of things to organize, Tris resorted to pacing around their apartment. Four was now almost 45 minutes late. Tris plopped back down in the armchair and sighed, resting her head on her hand. Holy shit, Chris said he's not very punctual, but this is getting ridiculous. Just as she was about to pull out her phone and angrily text Chris and Will, there was a knock on the door. Rolling her eyes, Tris stood, smoothed out her dress, put on a smile, and opened the door.

Okay so there's chapter 1! The first several chapters are very expositional, just setting the pace for the story.

Thanks for reading!
