A/N: Hello all and welcome to my first Psycho-Pass story. I recently binged this anime during isolation and now become quite a fan of Kogami and Akane. Please feel free to comment any ideas or themes you would like to see in future chapters, and I very much look forward to your feedback!
Mr and Mrs
Case One: Imperfections
It was shortly after eight in the evening when Kogami Shinya, fresh out of the shower, received a message from his wife. The former inspector and enforcer frowned, wrapped a cotton towel around his waist before clicking open the blinking message on his wristlet. A black and blue holographic screen popped up, alongside Tsunemori Akane's headshot, deeming who the sender was.
Going to be home late again, another report to finish by tomorrow.
Kogami sighed and walked into the kitchen. The apartment they bought was dimly lit and always smelt of brewed coffee any time during the day. You could say the two lived solely off caffeine, with Akane herself insisting that the first item they bought after marriage was a high quality coffee machine. But what caught Kogami's interest tonight was the ingredients he had picked up earlier for dinner. It was his turn to cook, and in all honesty, he was rather looking forward to good meal after spending most of the day eating instant noodles at the Foreign Affairs office.
Candy, now re-installed and upgraded to both his and Akane's home AI system immediately popped up in its pink jellyfish form, "Any recipes I can look up?" it asked, displaying a screen with a list of cuisines.
"Not cooking anymore," Kogami bluntly replied back, reaching for a pack of cigarettes that were lying close by, "Put everything back before it goes off."
The pink jellyfish flashed a cheerful thumbs up, "Certainly!" it chirped before disappearing again.
Kogami blew out a puff of smoke before glancing out the tall windows that were recently installed. Akane wasn't a big fan of him smoking around the house, especially in the living and kitchen area where the smell could easily stain the couch and carpet. Every now and then however, he would catch her lighting one whenever he wasn't home, especially those days when he worked late and found her fast asleep on the couch when he returned home.
"Candy", he called after noticing a few droplets of raining starting to streak the windows
The AI immediately appeared, "Go start my car please."
By eight-thirty Tsunemori Akane waved the last few members around the office goodnight as they all piled into the elevator. Even Shimotsuki Mika, her former partner and now chief inspector, was pulling on her grey overcoat and picking up her bag. The latter turned to Akane before heading out.
"Don't overdo it, senpai," she warned, "See you tomorrow."
Akane smiled after her, "See you tomorrow, Mika-chan."
The elevator dinged and the door finally slid close. Now left by herself alongside the quiet hum of the building's air conditioning system, Akane sighed and slumped back on her desk. While she was pleased to have being granted the position as statutory enforcer with the Public Safety Bureau after her release from the correction centre, she did not however, enjoy the increased paperwork that was included in her role. No wonder, she thought to herself, why Kagari and Kunizuka would always spend hours typing away on their computers back when she was an inspector. Silently, Akane gave the clock at the edge of her computer screen a quick glance before silently resuming her paperwork. She was just beginning to focus when a tall figure appeared outside her office.
"Tsunemori, why is it always you who never finishes the report on time?"
Akane shrieked and nearly jumped out of her skin at the sudden voice. She looked up to see who caused such a commotion, "K-Kogami-san?"
The figure shuffled in from the entrance and proudly held up a plastic bag, "Hungry?" he grinned, "Tonkotsu ramen with extra sauce and seaweed."
Still startled by the interruption, Akane spaced out for a second. She was always amused by how swift and fast he could move. Even back when she was an inspector and he an enforcer, Kogami somehow had the habit of showing up unannounced, usually behind or next to her, causing the younger woman to jump as she did today.
"How did you even get in here?" she blinked, finally coming to accept his presence, "There's security drones outside."
The latter shrugged, "Hibernated them for a few minutes."
"And my building access code?"
"It's my name isn't it?"
Akane flashed her former subordinate a knowing a look, "Accessing the Bureau unsupervised is illegal, Kogami-san," she announced, "Especially after hours."
Kogami gave a slight chuckle before walking over and setting the take-out on the table, "Eat up," he encouraged
The smell of her favourite food was greeted warmly by Akane's senses and her stomach growled approvingly in response. She could honestly deal with some soul-warming soup right now, as her last meal was during lunch and she barely managed to finish her bento box before being called out to another area stress crisis. Grabbing a nearby chair and rolling it towards the desk, Kogami watched as she carefully lifted all the contents from the bag.
"So, what type of case is it?" he slumped onto the seat, lighting a cigarette along the way
Akane blew on her noodles, "Manslaughter," she mumbled, "We caught him with a crime coefficient over three hundred but somehow managed to bring it down to two-fifty."
A nod was given in reciprocation as the man sitting across from her leant forward and grabbed the stack of papers that were sitting next to the keyboard. She was about to protest again, individuals unaffiliated with the Bureau were strictly prohibited to access confidential documents. Even for Akane who has being with the agency for a long time, she is always forbidden to discuss to any line of work with her family and friends. Then on the other hand, Kogami was never known to obey rules or regulations, and the duo did have a bad habit of sharing information with each other whenever an important case arose. Deep down as well, Akane always had secretly enjoyed watching her former colleague solve cases. It had something to do with the way he logically analysed everything, it was simply mesmerising- almost artistic.
Akane stared at the screen in awe. She took back what she said earlier about Kogami being artistic, the man was definitely not smooth when it came to writing reports. Coming from someone who constantly read literary novels and held the ability to decipher any information in his way, Akane herself concluded that she was never allowing her husband to handle her paperwork in any sort of way again. The only question she beared in mind now, was how on earth did he successfully manage to report anything back when the two worked together in division one?
"Gino did most of the writing back then," Kogami answered, sensing the question coming his way, "He still does now."
She sighed and took the wireless keyboard back, "I suddenly feel a lot more compassionate for Ginoza-san."
Watching as she resumed typing, Kogami chuckled, "Disappointed?"
"Hardly," Akane shook her head, "I have many weaknesses and awful habits as well."
"Being stubborn is obviously one."
She looked up, "I could say the same about you, Kogami-san."
"Fine," the man sitting across the table admitted, "Then stealing the blankets at night."
Akane pouted at his words, but remained focused on the remnants of the report, "It makes us more human, these weaknesses," she replied, "I admire it."
The two fell silent for the next minute or so as Kogami studied the enforcer tapping away against the keys. He remembered the Akane whom he first met, the young and naïve girl who recently graduated from college and was already brave enough to shoot him with a dominator. Or the time in SEAUn when she mistook him for a terrorist and was able to throw him onto the ground in a matter of seconds. He agreed that after all those years of being apart did make her stronger, both mentally and physically, but there was still something about the woman that he grew to be so fond off, that reminded him that he was still human, and now more loved and cared for than ever.
"It's getting late, Akane," Kogami announced, glancing at his wristlet, "You should probably finish up soon."
Akane looked up and smiled, "I'm nearly done," she declared, "I just need to save and – "
The computer suddenly glitched and the screen turned from black to white. Akane shrieked and immediately jumped up from her seat as a holographic Komissa appeared and happily waved a sign in her face.
"You have requested a system update," the cartoonish character echoed, "Please wait patiently."
She cried in frustration, "Not now! I thought I set it to update on my day off!"
"Adding clumsy to your list of weakness."
"Don't you dare, Kogami-san!"
A\N: Thank you once again for reading! I'll see you all in the second chapter.
