Author's Note: Discretion is advised, Sexual Assault is discussed in this story. The title is a play on the 2000 movie title "Almost Famous".
(I imagine August Maturo in the role of the character Brandon. Even though he's younger than Ava, I think he could pass as older now.)
Sydney, Olive, Emmy, and Sophia sat in class, staring at the board.
"Class dismissed," their math teacher announced. Students filed out of the room. Olive and Sydney reached the door. "Olive?"
"Yeah, Ms. G?" Olive questioned, turning to face her teacher.
"May I speak with you for a moment?"
"Sure," Olive replied. She looked at Sydney. "Meet you in English."
"Sure," Sydney told their teacher. "Bye, Ms. G."
Sydney left the classroom.
"So, what's up?" Olive questioned.
"I just wanted to tell you that you are one of the most advanced students I have ever seen in the last ten years," Ms. G. told her. "I really would suggest you testing out of Algebra one and two and transfer into Trigonometry, but I know you—"
"Want to stay with my friends," Olive finished for her. "And I don't think I'd like trigonometry either; it gets a lot more complicated. I don't think I'd be ready for it. It's a junior level class."
"Well, would you like to go over some of the material with a current junior?" She inquired. "Maybe make your mind up after that?"
"Who?"
"Brandon Alverson," Ms. G. answered her.
"Isn't he the one that always wears a jean jacket?" Olive asked.
"Yes," Ms. G. answered. "He's much into math, like you."
"Oh, cool," Olive said with a smile.
"So, would you be up for that?"
"Yeah!" Olive happily exclaimed. "Definitely!"
"I'll talk to him about it, then," she confirmed. "See you later, Olive."
"See you later, Ms. G."
Alisha and Max walked into Just Fun 'N Games.
"Hey, wanna go to my house after we both get off work?" Max inquired to Alisha.
"Hmm?" She asked.
"Are you listening to me?" Max questioned.
"Sorry, Max," she said.
"Are you okay?" He asked, concern evident in his voice. "You've been acting weird all day."
"Uh, yeah," she said. "I better get to work."
She walked away. Max walked over to Leo.
"Is Alisha okay?"
"I don't know," Leo admitted.
"She's been distracted all day," Max observed.
"Not just today," Leo informed him. "Since she got home from her vocal lesson last night, she's been acting off."
"With Mr. Wright, right?"
"Yeah," he answered.
Max looked over at the door, then back at Leo.
Olive and Brandon were sitting in the school atrium.
"This is easier than I thought it would be," Olive commented. "Kind of."
"I think you'd be ready for it," Brandon commented back. "I think you're ready for a lot of things." He set his pencil down. "You know like learning how to drive… and dating."
"Well, I just turned 14 a couple of months ago," she stated back, "so, I can't learn how to drive yet."
"You wanna go on a date?" He asked her.
"With you?"
"Yeah."
"I don't know," Olive admitted. "Like I said, I'm only 14. Aren't you almost 17?"
"Yeah," he answered. "Just thought I'd take a shot. I think you're cute."
"Really?"
"Yeah," he answered. "One date."
"Okay, sure," she replied.
Olive and Sydney were sitting in Reynold's Rides.
"He really asked you out?!" Sydney asked Olive, excitedly.
"Yeah," she answered. "He's a junior. He's probably dated a lot of other girls, older girls. Why would he want to date me?"
"Because you're awesome," Sydney reassured her best friend. "You guys have a lot in common, too- you both love math, both of your parents are divorced, etc., etc., etc."
"That's true," she agreed with a smile. "He has a really nice smile and I like his brown, curly hair."
"Ooo, that's another one," Sydney said. "You both have natural curly hair."
"You really think I should do this?" Olive questioned. "I've never dated anyone before."
"I want you to be happy," Sydney told her. "It's obvious that you like him."
"You're right," Olive said with a nod. "How's it going with Harry, by the way?"
"Great!" Sydney replied, happily. "He gave me a promise ring last night."
"That is so sweet!" She exclaimed. "With any luck, I'll get that with Brandon."
"I know, right?!" Sydney responded. She took a sip of her smoothie. "Grandma said her college friends told her that a promise ring is pretty much being engaged to be engaged."
"Really?" Olive questioned. "Is that how Harry sees it? Like, does he see that with you."
"Yeah," she confirmed. "He told me that he loves me right before he gave it to me. Also, he was right there when Grandma told me that and he said that his dad told him the same thing. He admitted that that's exactly why he got the rings."
"Wow," Olive said in awe. "He's so romantic!"
"Grandma said that dad did the same thing with mom," she said. "They were plastic rings from a machine, but still. She'd never seen him that serious about something before that."
"That's really cool, Syd," Olive commented.
"You should go on that date," Sydney said. She smiled. "Even if it doesn't work out, at least you tried."
"You're right…again," Olive agreed. "You're getting a track record." They both laughed. "How should I act? What should I wear? What should I say?"
"Just be yourself," Sydney told her, placing her hand on her friend's shoulder.
"Okay," Olive said after taking a breath.
Max walked into Alisha's workplace.
"Hey, I'm gonna go home," he told Alisha.
"Wait!" She exclaimed more than she meant to. Max turned around and looked at her. "Could you stay while I finish closing?"
"Why?" Max asked, obviously confused. "Don't you always do it by yourself?"
"Yeah…" She answered. "I just…"
"Just what?"
"Never m—" Max cut her off.
"I'll stay if you need me to," Max told her.
"Thanks," she told him. "I appreciate it."
"No problem."
She went to finish closing. Max watched her with a concerned look on his face.
Olive sat in the passenger seat of Brandon's truck.
"Thanks for dinner," she told him.
"Welcome," he told her. He stopped his truck.
"Where are we?" Olive questioned, confused.
"My spot."
"Spot for what?"
He unbuckled himself and looked at her. He leaned in and kissed her. He pulled away. She smiled.
"Wow…" she said.
"Your first?"
"Yeah," she said. He leaned in and kissed her again. He unbuckled her seat belt. He started to deepen it, and she broke the kiss. "I don't think we should go that far."
"It's a date," he adamantly.
"Exactly," she told him. "I don't want to go that far on my first date. Maybe not even for a while."
"This is what dating is like, so get over it," he told her. "If you want to date-especially me- you have to do this."
He started kissing her again. She pushed him away.
"Stop!" She yelled at him. "I'm not kissing you again! You're a jerk! I'm going home."
She reached for the door handle and pulled it. It didn't even budge. She looked at the lock, and saw that it was all the way down, realizing that it was a truck where only the drive controlled the locks.
"Unlock the door," she ordered him, "I want to go home."
"No, you're not leaving," he told her.
She looked at him.
"You can't keep me here, that's kidnapping," she countered him. "Let me out, now. I'm going home."
"You're in my truck," he reminded her. "We're on a date. I can do whatever I want in here."
"We're not on a date anymore, I want to go home," she told him. She squinted here eyes in thought at the last thing he said. "What do you mean you can do whatever you want?"
"I mean I can do whatever I want in my truck," he responded. He placed his hand on her thigh. "And you're doing whatever I want."
Her eyes grew wide. She pushed his hand off.
"I'm not doing anything with you!" She yelled at him. "I'm 14! I'm not ready."
"I don't care," he informed her.
She looked at him with fear in her eyes.
