Had this idea in my head for a while now and really wanted to write it down before continuing with "Saving Sonic" and "The Faith Tenrec Saga." Hope you enjoy!
NOTE: I OWN NONE OF THE CHARACTERS FROM EITHER THE SONIC GAMES OR THE SONIC MOVIE!
Congratulations! You're Grandparents Now!
Chapter One: Big News
Tom and Maddie Wachowski knew that home visits from their kids couldn't be scheduled. On Sonic and Tails' world, Mobius, there was always a threat to take on. Whether it was Dr. Robotnik or another supervillain from God knows where the Wachowski bros and their friends had to be ready for it. On Earth, Tom and Maddie went on with their lives as sheriff and vet. They never really knew when their sons would visit so they learned to go with the flow, not quite expecting but always hoping for a visit from their boys.
Despite the random scheduling, the couple always looked forward to seeing their kids waiting on the front porch. There'd be hugs and kisses followed by coffee and donuts in the house as Sonic and Tails told them all about their adventures.
Sonic and Tails always made sure to visit their parents at least once a year. So when a whole year passed without a single visit from them, Tom and Maddie got worried.
"Robotnik must have upped his ante," Tom said as he and Maddie had dinner by themselves at home. Ozzie whined as he lay under the table, tail thumping on the floor.
"I'm sure they're okay. But I hope Miles has figured out inter-dimensional telecommunications. It'd be a load off my mind if we can call them every now and then," Maddie said optimistically.
The months of the new year passed without any sign of Green Hills' Blue Devil and Twin-Tailed Genius. Despite having gotten used to not having their sons around ever since they left Earth to fight Robotnik on Mobius, they couldn't help but worry.
Then, one April morning, Tom and Maddie heard the light 'ting!' of a ring portal opening in the attic. Pulling the stairs down, Tom went in first and laughed when he saw Tails, Sonic, and Shadow stepping through the giant portal. "Long time, no see, boys!" he greeted them as he and Maddie came up.
"Sorry we couldn't visit last year. A lot of stuff happened," Tails apologized, his face getting smushed as Maddie hugged him.
"Get the coffee and donuts, Dad. We got a lot of catching up to do." Sonic grinned, giving Tom a hug.
Turns out Robotnik's latest evil scheme involved plunging all of Mobius into a full-blown war.
Tom and Maddie sat and listened to their sons recount the events of the war, dread building in their guts. Roboticized Mobians, deities going on a rampage… their boys had faced all of that in the span of one year.
"Please tell me you guys have a therapist back on Mobius…" Tom sighed, rubbing his temples once Sonic finished telling the story. He felt guilty for not being there to help Sonic and Tails when they needed him and Maddie. If they didn't have psychiatrists on their world, then he was going to book them an appointment with Dr. Burdett here.
"Yeah. Ms. Vanilla pretty much signed us all up for therapy," Tails admitted, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.
"Miles, sweetie, you really need to give our phones an upgrade so we can call you." Maddie ruffled his fur. "I can't believe you kids had to fight a war against that man…" she said, pulling Tails, Sonic, and Shadow into a tight hug.
"Mom, it's okay. Tails and I knew what we were getting into when we left home. Besides, better we fight Eggman on Mobius than let him bring the fight here to Earth," Sonic said, his voice muffled into his mother's shirt.
"Still, I think you guys ought to make that Resistance of yours a permanent thing. At least until your local military gets its shit together," Tom suggested.
"The G.U.N has actually been coordinating with the Resistance since the war. They're currently helping with the rebuilding." Shadow smiled wryly. "But, yeah, I agree with your comments, Tom. On some days, Rouge and I felt like we were the only ones who knew how to get shit done in the organization," he chuckled.
"Talks of war and recovery aside, we didn't just come here to let you all know how we've been doing." Sonic disentangled himself from Maddie's arms and took off his left glove. He grinned at the looks on his parents' faces as he wiggled his fingers.
"Oh my God!" Maddie squealed, bouncing in her seat. Tom merely grinned and clapped Shadow on the back, the black hedgehog smiling shyly.
The gemstone flower, composed of perfectly-cut emeralds and rubies, in the ring on Sonic's finger sparkled in the sun.
"We're thinking of having the wedding in June. We're focusing on rebuilding right now but we've started making plans," said Sonic, wrapping an arm around Shadow.
"Take your time, guys. It takes a lot of time to plan a wedding," Maddie told them.
"Maddie and I were engaged for a year and a half. It's okay to wait a bit," Tom added.
"Nah, Shads and I are ready for the next big step. We've been dating for a long time now. Might as well make it official," Sonic said, nuzzling his boyfriend.
"Not to mention that the war made us both realize that there's no time like the present." Shadow kissed Sonic on the cheek. "We'll no doubt have more battles to fight. I'd rather fight those battles by your side knowing we've got each other," he whispered.
Sonic laughed and hugged him. "You sound just like when you proposed to me, babe," he remarked, earning a soft chuckle from the Ultimate Lifeform. Then he looked at Tails, who grinned, then turned to his Mom and Dad.
"Oh, and by the way, we got one more bit of news to share. Congratulations! You two are grandparents now!"
At Tom and Maddie's confused expressions, Shadow decided to explain. "We've adopted a child," he announced, prompting both elder Wachowskis to start asking questions.
"Her name's Faith. She's a tenrec. Shadow and I rescued her from one of Eggman's bases." Sonic's cheerful smile faded and was replaced by a frown. "She was kidnapped along with her mother. Eggman wanted to turn her into a living weapon because her powers were really similar to mine. He forced Faith to fight his Badniks. If she refused, her mother got punished…" he murmured, balling his hands into fists.
He could still remember Faith clinging to her mother, Alexandra, who tried to convince her daughter to not engage in any further violence like Robotnik wanted her to do.
"But if I don't do what he says, he'll hurt you again, Mama!" Faith whimpered, hugging Alexandra tightly.
He and Shadow had been captured and put in the same cell as the two tenrecs when they went to investigate the base where the Doctor was keeping his alleged 'bio-weapon.' There, they formed a plan to escape.
"We promised Faith's mother that we would look after her. That we would help her learn how to use her powers…" Shadow rubbed Sonic's back, his eyes downcast. He and Sonic were prepared to eliminate the Doctor's bio-weapon. They were shocked to discover a wounded mother tenrec clutching her six-year-old daughter instead.
Shadow sighed heavily. "We planned to escape. All four of us. But our plan nearly failed and we were nearly killed. Alexandra sacrificed herself to allow Sonic and I to escape with Faith," he revealed, closing his eyes as he remembered.
"Take care of my daughter," Alexandra had told them, with a sad smile, as she threw Faith to him and Sonic just before the base blew up. He'd been able to teleport himself, Sonic, and Faith out of the blast zone in the nick of time. He could still remember seeing the smoke rising into the orange sky, how Faith screamed "MAMA!" at the top of her lungs as she tried to run to the burning base…
Tails noticed both hedgehogs' sullen expressions and sadly said, "They found Faith shortly before the war ended. Part of the reason why we weren't able to visit was that we had to take care of Faith. Losing her mom really took a lot out of her and her powers became highly unstable. Sonic and Shadow were the only ones she really trusted. She got serious separation anxiety whenever either of them had to leave for missions."
Maddie and Tom looked at each other, their hearts simultaneously breaking for the child their son and future son-in-law had taken in. They hadn't even met Faith and they already felt responsible for her, like Sonic and Shadow were now responsible for raising her.
"How's she doing now, sweetie?" Maddie asked Sonic, who perked up.
"A lot better. Shadow and I have been taking her to a psychiatrist to help her with her anxiety and PTSD. We've also been training her." The blue hedgehog's face lit up as he started talking about his and Shadow's adopted daughter. "She's already so fast. I mean, yesterday, she beat both Shadow and me in a race! One minute, she was lagging behind. Then, suddenly, whoosh! She was running right past us with sparks trailing after her. A-and she loves strawberries and sunflowers. Oh, and we've been telling Faith all about you two, and Uncle Wade, and Aunt Rachel, and Jojo, and all about Green Hills. And she said that she wants to meet you guys soon," Sonic told his parents excitedly.
"We'll wait until next year before we let her travel to Earth via warp ring. But we think it'd be a good idea to introduce you to Faith and let her get to know you two before the wedding," Shadow announced.
Tails pulled out his Miles Electric. "Would it be okay for you two and maybe Aunt Rachel and Jojo to come with us to Mobius and stay there two weeks before the wedding? We've got some guest rooms at our place. And Amy would be glad to let you guys stay in case there's not enough room," he offered, checking his calendar.
"That'd be great, champ." Tom ruffled Tails' head. "But would you mind doing your Mom and me a favor and upgrade our phones for inter-dimensional phone calls?" he asked jokingly.
"Not at all, Dad. Just give 'em here," Tails said, holding out his right hand expectantly.
While Tails tinkered with their parents' phones, Sonic and Shadow got their own phones out to show Maddie pictures of Faith.
"Ooh, this one's my favorite," Sonic giggled, tapping on his phone's screen to pull up the image. It was a picture of Faith when he and Shadow took her to the flower fields the two of them had planted and taken care of since they started dating.
"Oh, my gosh. Tom, our granddaughter is adorable," Maddie cooed, smiling at the picture on Sonic's phone.
Tom looked up from watching Tails working on his phone and scooted across the couch so he could be next to Maddie. He looked at the picture displayed on Sonic's phone and got his first look at their granddaughter.
The little girl displayed on Sonic's phone looked like a Mobian hedgehog with the same pink fur as Amy's. Maddie pointed out that her ears were a little bigger and were more rounded than Sonic's or Shadow's. Faith was dressed in a blue short-sleeved shirt and overalls with a sunflower embroidered on the front, gardening gloves and boots, and a yellow wide-brimmed straw hat. She had a bouquet of flowers clutched in her hands and was holding it up to the camera, the flowers obscuring her mouth, big pinkish-red eyes looking shyly into the camera.
"Cute." Tom smiled, looking at Sonic and Shadow. "I can't wait to meet her," he said before realizing something. "Mobius doesn't have any humans. Other than Robotnik, of course. Has Faith met the guy?" he asked.
Sonic and Shadow looked at each other, grimacing. "Yeah, and she does not like the guy," Sonic mumbled, his right hand reaching up to rub his left arm.
"Faith is excited to meet you all but the Doctor's the only human she's interacted with. We hope that meeting you two will help her gain a more positive outlook on humans," Shadow added.
'That bastard kidnapped her, put her through hell, and killed her mom. I don't blame her for having a fear of us…' Tom thought, glancing at Maddie who was frowning. No doubt thinking of how she and her husband could help this sweet child.
"And… finished!" Tails grinned, handing his parents their phones back. "I upgraded them to be able to connect with Mobius' WiFi and telecommunications network so you two can call and text us even while here on Earth. And I also tinkered with the batteries to extend their life to go without charging for about two weeks," he explained.
"Thank you, honey." Maddie kissed Tails on the forehead. She looked at Sonic and Shadow, smiling. "So, any more pictures of our granddaughter?"
"I've got some videos, too," Shadow piped up. The rest of the morning passed with Tom and Maddie looking at pictures of Faith and watching videos of her playing soccer with other Mobian kids. There were definitely a lot of family pictures, showing Faith hugging Sonic or Shadow, and the three of them cuddling together. At one point, Maddie left to give Rachel and Jojo a call to tell them the good news.
"I can't believe you're already a Dad, buddy," Tom chuckled, hugging Sonic.
"Yeah. Sometimes I can't either…" Sonic beamed, green eyes sparkling. "But Faith didn't have any other family. She was all alone. And putting her in an orphanage would have been hard, especially with her powers. She didn't know how to control them yet and the kids would end up picking on her or fearing her. Her Mom asked Shadow and me to help her learn how to live with her powers and we intend to keep that promise. And… Dad, I want to be her Dad. I want her to have the life you and Mom gave me and Tails. Before we knew it…" he said before trailing off, smiling lovingly at Shadow.
"We ended up going from being Faith's teachers to 'Dad' and 'Papa'. To be honest, half the time we're wondering if we're doing things right and worrying about how to be good parents," Shadow remarked, earning a laugh from his future husband.
"Well, I think you two are doing a good job so far. I mean, look at all the family photos you guys have." Tom smiled at a picture of his eldest son, his future son-in-law, and granddaughter wearing flower crowns. "Looks like you've given her a lot of good memories and experiences already," he said.
"And we hope to make more. Although, we could use some advice when she starts entering the teen years." Shadow looked at Tom curiously. "How hard was it to raise this blue idiot when he was a teen?" he asked, playfully elbowing Sonic in the ribs.
"Super. It's like having a tornado for a pet," Tom replied, pretending to look weary.
"I don't think Faith's gonna be that hard to handle when she's a teenager." Tails smirked as he watched his brother and future brother-in-law play fight. "Until she gets a boyfriend, that is," he said, making the two hedgehogs pause from their pretend tussle and glare at him.
"No. No boyfriends."
"Absolutely not."
Tom laughed, shaking his head in bemusement. "Relax, you two. She's only, what, six? You don't have to worry about her getting boyfriends for another seven years or so," he reassured them.
"Faith turned seven a couple of months ago. We only have six years left before she starts talking about boys," Sonic said gravely just as Maddie came back.
"Rachel said she can take time off work to come to Mobius with us. Jojo's already asking what gift she should get for her new niece," Maddie announced, grinning broadly. Then she put her hands on her hips. "So what's this about having six years left?" she asked.
"Madds, they're already dreading the day Faith becomes a teen. I pity all those poor boys," Tom replied, chuckling.
Maddie laughed, going over to hug the two hedgehogs. "Well, whoever becomes Faith's boyfriend will know how to treat her right. You two will make sure of that," she said.
"Damn right we will," Shadow proclaimed, smirking.
"Okay!" Tom clapped his hands, getting up from the couch. "Celebratory lunch! What do you guys want?" he asked.
"Chilidogs!" Sonic whooped.
"And mint chocolate chip milkshakes!" Tails cheered.
"I'll have extra peppers and cheese on my chilidog. Oh, and coffee beans," Shadow said calmly.
The trio of Mobians left after lunch, leaving Tom and Maddie to plan their upcoming trip.
"Okay, June… that's a summer month. Oh, wow, we haven't been to Mobius in a long while. I wonder how Amy and Knuckles are doing…" Tom wondered as he and Maddie settled in for the night.
"This trip's going to be a lot longer than all our previous visits. I hope we get to do a little bit more sight-seeing this time around." Facing her husband in the bed, Maddie smiled. "I can't believe it… Sonic's getting married and we already have a granddaughter. Time flies," she gushed.
"I guess Mobian Child Adoption Services work a little different from ours." He leaned in and kissed Maddie softly on the lips. Pulling away, he grinned. "But yeah… a grandkid and I'm not even that old yet. Wow…" he murmured, his wife laughing softly.
Drifting off to sleep, Tom and Maddie looked forward to June where they would get to meet their granddaughter and walk their eldest son down the aisle.
Okay, that's it for Part One. Part Two will be where Tom and Maddie Wachowski meet Faith Tenrec-Hedgehog.
In case you're all wondering, this two-shot isn't tied to "Sonic Boom Season Three: The Faith Tenrec Saga." Think of it as an alternate movie universe.
Faith's backstory here is very different from her current backstory in Boom. For starters, she was raised by her mother, Alexandra, who didn't die from childbirth. Her father, in this AU, died during the war mentioned by Sonic and Tails in this story. Prior to that, Alexandra had divorced him when Faith was just a baby and was given full custody over her. Faith never got to know her father because Alexandra made sure to keep him away from her. She later learns from Sonic and Shadow that her father had died; and that Alexandra had written in her will that custody over Faith would be given to whoever could help Faith manage her powers should she pass away suddenly.
Around the time of this story, Sonic and Shadow have both been hailed as heroes in Mobius and are one of the few Mobians capable of harnessing Chaos Energy. Given Faith's powers, which are similar to Sonic's, they're the best people to raise the orphaned tenrec.
Anyways, that's all for Part One. Part Two coming up soon. Later!
