The first thing Ryan hears as he busts on to the roof is "Castle'' as he rushes to the desperate plea with two SWAT team members close behind. He grabbed the only hand he sees, and with the combined strength of the SWAT team anchoring him, they hoisted Beckett over the edge only to collapse on the filthy rooftop where some of her own blood now dotted the scene
As she regains her composure from her terrible run-in with Cole Maddox, she sees numerous Twelfth precinct personnel and finally Detective Karpowski and Captain Gates barking out orders to secure the scene and start an immediate search of the entire building. Hopefully Espo slipped away unnoticed in the confusion. Moments later her hopes were dashed when Espo appeared in the company of two patrol officers. God, what had she done. She stood slowly and walked over to her Captain trying to conjure a rational explanation for all this.
"Detectives Beckett and Esposito I am happy you are both OK, but this scene certainly is not. Both of you should be checked out by medical personnel and then meet separately with Detective Karpowski to provide a full first report of exactly what happened here. In the meantime, remain separate and talk to no one. Karpowski, you are in charge; I will be heading to 1PP to give them a heads-up on all this before returning to the precinct."
Kate's meeting with Karpowski was not pleasant. She was being treated more like a suspect than a peer though the questions suggested they were unsure what to make of it. Much to her surprise, Karpowski pulled out a digital recorder making everything she said hard to deny down the road. Espo went next and took longer. Kate wondered why. Up until Castle, she was like a sister to Espo, but now, who knows how he might react. It was quite possible that their law enforcement days were over, and all he had left was returning to the Army which would never be his first choice. She, on the other hand, would have no job, no Caste, and probably a strained relationship with her dad for recklessly running at someone so beyond her expertise. As she rode back to the precinct, nothing about this looked very promising.
When she arrived at the precinct she was escorted into Interrogation Room 1 as her colleagues gawked at the rough manner with which they were handled. While she waited, Sargent Connor and Investigator Null arrived from IA and were briefed by Karpowski. Connor broke off to offer Kate a drink, inform her that search warrants were pending, and Castle had been called as a person of interest. Poor Castle, she thought. He quit because of her blind intransigence, and now he ends up back in her mess. Well into that evening, Connor and Null tag teamed Espo and her until all are weary. She was an expert at all the interrogation techniques they tried and quite impressed with their persistence. The problem was her story never changed.
It was all her doing. The Costas murder investigation led back to the robbery at the Montgomery residence which meant it was tied in with her mother's murder. She and Espo went to check out a suspect at the building. There they found the dead super and the stolen Montgomery pictures. As they exited, Maddox momentarily stunned Beckett and cold-cocked Espo. She gave chase to the roof where a fight ensued. He easily rebuffed her foolish attempts to subdue him and even admitted to being the sniper who missed her at the cemetery. Finally while hanging on for dear life, he taunted her about the identity of her mother's killer and suddenly disappeared when the sirens got too close. Espo was just being a good partner and got caught up in trying to catch Costas's murderer. What she neglected to mention was Gate's strict prohibition about having anything to do with her shooting or the murder of her mother.
A little after 8:00PM she was ushered into Gate's office by Sargent Connor where Espo was already waiting. When the door shut, Gates went off on both of them. 1PP and the union had agreed to an immediate thirty day suspension during which they would both be available for further questioning. Right now it was her view that they had broken a number of regulations including failure to follow a direct specific order. She also told them that Castle was going to be dragged into this mess, and she hoped the stink would finally force the Mayor to abandon him. When she finished, they both gave up their badges and weapons and walked out only to see Ryan's totally disheartened look as they passed by. It had been her plan to simply resign, but the odd presence of IA made her reconsider something so hasty.
Finally free and on the street, they parted company, and she called her dad. That was a mistake. Instead of being thankful she was alive, he went off on her for continuing her reckless investigation, letting Castle walk out of her life, and needlessly endangering the life of Javier. "Does that behavior sound any different than mine with a bottle which you railed against. Now the shoe is on the other foot young lady, and you need to decide what is important in your life. I can't watch you recklessly put yourself in mortal danger." God, he sounded just like Castle. When it ended, the only positive thing to come of it was a promise to find a person to represent them in whatever disciplinary process Gates was sure to want.
