Here's a spooky SpongeBob Halloween fic!

Enjoy!

A Krusty Halloween

It was a cold, misty evening in Bikini Bottom. The citizens of the small town were preparing for Halloween, a beloved spooky holiday. It was the perfect night for trick or treating, the mist was thick and mysterious and there was a bright full moon lighting the streets with its cold pale glow.

It was closing time at the Krusty Krab.

Squidward was reclined in the cashier boat, he was reading his book and pointedly ignoring the boy standing beside him.

"Squidward?" The sponge was fidgeting nervously, "Hey, Squidward? Squidward!"

Squidward sighed tiredly before turning his head to glare at his coworker.

Mr. Krabs had insisted they dress up for their Halloween shifts, Squidward had opted to go for the lazy option and just shove on a vampire cape. SpongeBob stood there in his Mermaid Man costume, minus the wig as they all agreed it was a fire hazard.

"What?" He groaned, "What could you possibly want 2 minutes to closing time?"

The boy blushed and kicked at the boat gently.

"Um… well… I was just wondering…" SpongeBob bit his lip, "Could you… uh… could you walk me home?"

Squidward's frown deepened with displeasure, he lay his book down.

"Why would I do that?" He asked moodily, SpongeBob was staring out the front doors into the darkness.

"Well… because it's Halloween?" SpongeBob's voice was high, "And Patrick can't pick me up because he's at Sandy's party… I can't go coz Gary needs fed first."

"Right… SpongeBob Scared-y Pants can't walk home alone because of all the scary 5-year-olds dressed up as pumpkins!" Squidward laughed mockingly, SpongeBob bowed his head at the familiar name.

"It's not the kids that scare me! It's the…" He gulped loudly, "Teenagers!"

This made Squidward laugh even more, he gripped his aching stomach.

"Alright Lads!" Mr. Krabs announced as he left his office, still dressed up as a pirate. "We're officially closed!"

"Thank Neptune!" Squidward leapt out of the boat and headed for the doors only to be stopped by Mr. Krabs, he noticed SpongeBob had been stopped too.

"Not so fast!" He stood before his employees with a stern expression, "As you know, last year the Krusty Krab was a victim of a hate crime!"

"It just got covered in toilet paper." Squidward deadpanned,

"Not true! There was spray paint on the windows!" Mr. Krabs corrected firmly, "No doubt the same thing will happen tonight if we leave her unattended."

Squidward tensed, his stomach filled with dread.

"I need you boys to stay here overnight and chase off any would-be vandals." He commanded, before smirking. "I'll even pay you double for a good job."

Squidward huffed, not wanting to waste his night locked in the restaurant with SpongeBob.

"No! There is no way-" He began only to be interrupted by SpongeBob,

"I can't! I gotta go home and feed Gary!" The boy insisted worriedly.

"I'll feed 'im for ya!" Mr. Krabs waved him off. The two employees tried to escape with their boss only for the doors to be shut in their faces. "If there are any damages tomorrow, they're coming out of your paychecks!"

Squidward grit his teeth as he watched the crab walk away chuckling, he glanced over at his shorter coworker. SpongeBob had gone incredibly pale, he was shaking slightly as his wide eyes watched his boss leave him behind.

Any thoughts of abandoning SpongeBob on his own for the night left his mind, he hated the kid but he wasn't a monster. He knew Halloween was SpongeBob's least favourite day, the boy was always exceptionally quiet on the holiday.

"Relax." Squidward sighed, his eyes still on the quivering sponge. "The lights are still on and nobody's gonna come anywhere near this dump, it'll be morning before you know it."

SpongeBob nodded silently, still not even glancing at Squidward.

The taller of the two heaved a sigh, dreading how long tonight was going to feel. He shuffled back to his boat and settled back down with his book.

After an hour Squidward felt like he was going to break something. SpongeBob had not stopped pacing the length of the dining room, picking at his fingers while murmuring who knows what to himself.

Squidward couldn't concentrate on his book. After reading the same paragraph for the fifth time in a row, he slammed the book down. SpongeBob let out a yelp and threw himself under the nearest table.

"Some guard." Squidward muttered with an eye roll, he cleared his throat loudly to gain the boy's attention.

SpongeBob's blue eyes snapped to his face, he smiled sheepishly but didn't remove himself from under the table.

"Will you just relax? What do you think is gonna happen!?" Squidward grumbled, he left the boat and came over to the trembling boy. He knelt down and dragged him out into the open.

"Have you never seen a horror movie!?" SpongeBob screeched as he was pulled out from his hiding place, "We'll be dead by morning!"

"From what!?" Squidward snarled as the two stood up,

"I don't know! Ghosts, murderers, vampires, witches, monsters – take your pick!" The boy yelped as he waved his arms around hysterically, "The vandals won't like it when we tell them to go away!"

"We'll just call the police if they give us trouble, that's if they show up at all?" Squidward rolled his eyes.

"It's not that easy!"

"It is!" Squidward huffed in annoyance.

Suddenly the lights went out, leaving the two in pitch darkness. SpongeBob screamed in terror.

"It's happening!" He screeched fearfully. Squidward took a deep breath before wandering carefully over to the windows, there he stepped into a sliver of moonlight.

"Come here you idiot!" He called tiredly.

"Squidward!" SpongeBob yelped, Squidward heard the boy rushing towards him.

He opened his mouth to tell the boy to be careful but didn't get the chance, there was another yelp and a clatter of a table being pulled over.

"SpongeBob!" Squidward scolded angrily, "Be careful! Get over here before you break something!"

There was no response.

Squidward frowned as he listened for any noises, he could only hear breathing. He ignored the gnawing worry in his stomach, he squinted his eyes to try and see through the gloom.

"SpongeBob?" He called hesitantly, "You ok?"

Still no response, just eerie silence. Squidward couldn't deny how worrying it was.

He crept carefully through the restaurant to the kitchen, he grabbed as many candles as he could and set about placing them on tables and lighting them.

After lighting most of them the warm glow soon illuminated a shape on the floor by a toppled table, Squidward lit another candle and placed it nearby so it lit up the full body of the fry cook.

SpongeBob lay face flat on the floor, it was clear he had tripped on a chair and hit his head on the edge of the table and somehow dragged it down with him. Squidward flipped the sponge onto his back and winced at the cut.

He wondered if he should go and call an ambulance when the phone rang.

He wandered over to the phone and answered it, still watching over SpongeBob in concern.

"Krusty Krab, Squidward speaking." He answered automatically.

"Ahoy, Mr. Squidward!" Mr. Krabs' loud voice greeted, "Just thought I'd check in! Pearlie's at a party tonight!"

"Mr. Krabs, did you forget to pay the electric bill again?" Squidward asked curiously.

"No, why?" The crab asked in confusion,

"The lights have gone out…" Squidward sighed, "It's pitch black and SpongeBob kinda panicked."

"Did he run?" Mr. Krabs asked angrily, "If he did, I'll go grab his keister and drag him back!"

"No, he fell over and hit his head. He's out cold." Squidward replied nervously, "I'm not sure what to do."

"Poor lad…" Mr. Krabs sounded like he was getting out of a chair. "I'll head over, probably just the fuse box playing up. Stay with the boy, I'll check him over when I get there and we'll see if he needs a doctor."

"Ok, we'll be here." Squidward agreed before hanging up, he grabbed the first aid kit before shuffling back over to his coworker carefully. He sat beside him, he cleaned and wrapped the wound easily. It didn't seem too bad.

He sighed as he glanced out the front, Mr. Krabs didn't live far away so he wouldn't be long.

A few minutes later he saw his boss wave at him through the window, he disappeared round the side. After a moment the lights flickered back on, Squidward breathed a sigh of relief.

Mr. Krabs entered and headed over to his employees, his eyes fixed on the boy lying on the floor.

"He still out?" He asked in concern,

"It hasn't been that long." Squidward shrugged, "I've cleaned up the cut."

The boss nodded but the frown stayed put.

It was then SpongeBob groaned and frowned, his fingers twitched. The two older men leaned over, watching.

"Ow…" SpongeBob groaned as he lifted a hand to touch his head.

"Don't touch." Squidward caught the arm, "You'll just make it hurt more."

The sponge's blue eyes fluttered open gingerly, he sat up with a dry swallow and glanced around.

"The lights are back on?" He frowned, his eyes finally fell on his boss. "Mr. Krabs!"

"You ok lad?" Mr. Krabs asked gently, scanning the boy's face for any signs of confusion.

"Yeah, I'm ok." He nodded before glancing apologetically at Squidward. "Sorry for freaking out…"

"I'm used to it." Squidward just shrugged in response.

Mr. Krabs decided he'd have to stay with his crew, he didn't want another accident on his hands. He and Squidward collected the candles while SpongeBob sat against the back wall sipping a glass of water, he had strict instructions to stay put.

His eyes watched the others as they moved around. His head ached and he was embarrassed about what happened, it was then he glanced out the front.

He froze in fear.

Outside there was a large dark shape, it's glowing green eyes stared straight back at him. It was eerily still, SpongeBob couldn't breathe.

He swallowed, it couldn't be anything!

He glanced over at his friends as they walked past him and into the kitchen, he looked out again to see the monster creeping towards the doors.

SpongeBob leapt to his feet and ran to the doors, he held them closed. The creature kept crawling forward into the moonlight, silent and unblinking.

The creature seemed to be some kind of giant maggot; it had a large mouth that stayed slightly open as it breathed through its teeth. It had a pale, eerie glow.

The creature rose up and slammed it's body against the doors, SpongeBob yelped as he struggled to keep the doors closed against the weight. He leaned his full body against the glass, panting from the exertion.

"Go away!" He whimpered, "We're closed!"

The creature reeled back again and slammed down, SpongeBob yelled and closed his eyes as he pushed harder against the beast.

"SpongeBob!" Squidward scolded as he ran out of the kitchen only to skid to a stop. "What in Neptune's name is that!?"

Mr. Krabs hurried out at Squidward's yell of shock, he too froze in fear.

"What is that?" He breathed in horror. The two men gasped as the glass of the doors began to crack, Mr. Krabs ran forward.

"SpongeBob!" He yelled as the beast reeled back once more, "Get away from the doors!"

"But it'll get in!" SpongeBob whimpered. Mr. Krabs ran towards him, grabbed his arm and yanked him away from the glass as the beast crashed through.

The two joined Squidward's side, staring at the monster. It slid towards them, its skin scraping along the floor.

"What do we do!?" SpongeBob cried, looking to his older colleagues in panic.

"It's a monster, we kill it!" Mr. Krabs snapped back, he glanced at Squidward. "Mr. Squidward, get the net from the storage room!"

Squidward dashed away at the command.

"SpongeBob, get me the biggest knife from the kitchen!" He demanded; SpongeBob saluted shakily before running into the kitchen.

The crab turned to face the monster.

"Stay back ye fiend!" He growled, snapping his claws towards the beast. It opened it's large mouth and dashed towards Mr. Krabs, he dived to the side to avoid the sharp teeth.

His crew burst out and yelped as the monster turned towards them. It dashed at them, SpongeBob pushed Squidward to safety and cried out as one of his arms was chomped off.

Squidward hoisted the sponge up to the top of the crows nest to join him, he watched as SpongeBob grew another arm and glanced at him with wild eyes.

"You ok?" Squidward asked in concern.

"Yeah, but it's got the taste of sponge now!" The boy cried fearfully, "I think I must be delicious too coz it's coming right for us!"

SpongeBob pointed past Squidward in panic, the cashier spun round and yelled as the maggot jumped up at them. He grabbed SpongeBob and leapt out of the way, he managed to grab a beam but accidently dropped his friend.

"Sponge!" He yelped, reaching down. Mr. Krabs caught the boy easily, he took the knife from him.

"Get ready with that net Mr. Squidward!" He called up as he dashed to the side, the monster was heading straight for the fry cook. "Run boy! Lead the beast under the net!"

SpongeBob turned and fled to the wall, he watched in shock as Squidward dropped the net but fell after it. The cashier bounced off the thick-skinned beast and landed beside his boss, he wheezed – winded from the fall.

The monster let out a loud screech as it thrashed around, Mr. Krabs headed towards it – ready to kill.

The three watched in horror as the monster's body tore the net into threads, it shot forward too quickly.

"NO!" Squidward and Mr. Krabs screamed as the large beast dove at their youngest, SpongeBob closed his eyes as the mouth rushed towards him.

The beast swallowed the boy whole. Squidward stood up and stepped forward to Mr. Krabs' side, the two stared as the beast turned to face them.

"It ate SpongeBob…" Squidward breathed tearfully, "He's gone."

Mr. Krabs just shook his head numbly.

"I wish I'd been nicer to him…" The grumpy neighbor continued as he began to cry, "He only wanted to be my friend!"

Mr. Krabs gasped as the monster disappeared in a cloud of green smoke, revealing a cackling Flying Dutchman. Squidward stared open mouthed, tears still falling rapidly.

"You killed SpongeBob?" Mr. Krabs stepped forward furiously, "Why!?"

"He's not dead you fools!" The Flying Dutchman grinned as he opened his hand to reveal a disorientated fry cook sitting in his palm, the ghost laughed cruelly. "It was a trick! You shoulda seen the looks on yer faces!"

He lowered his hand and SpongeBob slid off, he stumbled happily towards his friends. Mr. Krabs pulled him into a tight bear hug.

"Thank Neptune yer ok!" He breathed before releasing the boy, he turned furiously and stormed towards the Flying Dutchman. "You!"

SpongeBob shuffled over to the teary Squidward's side as Mr. Krabs screamed at the still laughing ghost.

"Squidward!" He gasped in glee, "Are you crying over me!? You do love me!"

He leapt up and hugged the tall octopus, his neighbor caught him and simply hugged him back.

"Just to be clear," He sniffled, secretly relieved. "I still hate you, you're just not allowed to die."

"Aww Squiddy! I knew you cared!" The boy teased excitedly, still hugging his friend. "This is the best night of my life!"

Squidward grit his teeth in annoyance but the thumping of his heart against his ribcage forced him to keep a tight hold of his irritating neighbour.

"It was just a prank!" The Flying Dutchman yelled at Mr. Krabs, frustrated at the onslaught of verbal abuse. "It's Halloween! Lighten up!"

"It wasn't funny!" The boss yelled furiously, "I thought my fry cook was dead!"

"It was to me!" The ghost grinned nastily, "Can't a dead guy have some fun around here? The kid didn't mind did ya?"

He glanced over at SpongeBob; the boy gave him a thumbs up.

"I did but it's ok! I forgive you!" He called over happily.

"See?" The ghost smirked; he rolled his eyes as the crab continued to insult him. "Alright, alright! I'm goin'! Happy Halloween!"

He disappeared with another cackle, he loved this holiday.

"C'mon lads, I think we'd better call it a night." He sighed as he faced his crew, he smirked as Squidward dropped SpongeBob pointedly.

The three left through the miraculously fixed doors.

"This was the best Halloween yet!" SpongeBob grinned as he skipped between his friends, "I'll forever remember this one as the Halloween where Squidward cried over my death!"

"Will you shut up!" Squidward snapped in embarrassment, "It doesn't mean anything!"

"It does so! It means you like me and you finally admit we're best buds!" The sponge giggled gleefully.

"Of course, you're my friend, SpongeBob!" Squidward snapped angrily, "Why else would I put up with you every day!?"

There was a beat of silence.

"No, please don't!" Squidward groaned as SpongeBob looked at him with glittering eyes, he jumped up and hugged Squidward again – forcing him to carry him.

"Awwwww!" SpongeBob cooed as he rubbed his cheek against his neighbour's, "You're the best!"

"I know I am, get off!" Squidward grumbled but made no effort to remove the boy.

Mr. Krabs just chuckled humorously at their antics as they continued their journey home.

The next day SpongeBob told everyone he knew what had happened that Halloween night, Patrick and Sandy were the only ones who believed the tale. Squidward woke up to find a friendship bracelet on his doorstep, he slipped it on with a tired sigh and a small, fond smile. If anyone noticed he and SpongeBob were wearing matching bracelets they didn't comment on it, which was probably for the best.

Happy Halloween!
