Prologue

The building was quiet as she walked around it, familiarizing herself with the layout. She hadn't picked out the location, but a companion from her past had. It didn't feel like home, not by a long shot, but she blamed that on the lack of decor. Speaking of which…

Kagome cut her eyes to the many stacks of boxes scattered about. All her decor was inside those things. The sheer amount of what she had to unpack almost made her sigh in defeat.

Is this really what her life had amounted to after everything she'd gone through already? When would fate finally decide she's gone through enough?

"It's nice here."

She turned at hearing the voice, and she let her gaze land on the figure standing in the doorway that connected the kitchen to the room next to it.

"You have enough room, right?" he asked after a moment. "It's not a very big place, is it?"

Kagome smiled at him and shook her head. "The size is fine," she said. "It's just gonna be me here, John." Her mind circled back to his prior statement. "It's nice," she said, agreeing with his prior words. "I didn't know what it'd look like," she admitted then, and John gave her an odd look at hearing those words.

"What?"

She nodded and walked to join the blonde man. "Yeah. This entire thing," she said, motioning around, "was my friend's idea. He picked the place for me and everything."

Sesshoumaru had gone the extra mile in choosing a new home for her. From finding a safe location, looking into the neighbors she'd have, to the style and layout itself in search of a place she'd feel at home in. He'd been the one to propose the idea of her moving in light of her situation, and she'd agreed with a heavy heart. He'd been kind in his own way of trying to keep her comfortable while also protecting her. At the very least, she was grateful for his attempts and gestures alike.

"He wanted me to be able to focus on spending time with mama and Souta since I'd be leaving, so once I told him where I wanted to go, he did everything else for me."

"You sure this guy is just a friend?" John laughed after a second. Kagome looked at him, and she caught onto what he meant after a second. Her cheeks flushed red and she whirled away from him with a mild huff.

"Yes, he is," she said, punctuating her words with a few, short, tense steps over to some boxes. The idea and assumption alone were enough to send her almost reeling. She knew that if Sesshoumaru or Inuyasha ever heard of this, she'd never live it down. Inuyasha, her loud-mouthed best friend, wouldn't let her. Sesshoumaru would probably end up killing him, and that'd be the only way she'd be able to bury it then. "What's it matter?" she huffed.

"It doesn't," John said. Something in his tone made her think he hadn't believed her words in the slightest. "Your friend must care about you a lot. It's nice. He seems nice."

She glared at him before shaking her head and going back to her box. If he ever met Sesshoumaru, he'd eat those words.

John came over to join her in unpacking, both of them focusing on a different box from the same stack. Mid-box, John lifted his head and focused on the quiet girl carefully sifting through the items in the box in front of her. Something held her attention, and upon getting a good look at it, he saw it was a photo of her and her mother and younger brother. It looked recent and was most likely taken not long before she left.

John set the trinket he'd just unwrapped to the side and looked at her fully. She tensed up under the weight of his stare and looked up a second later. Unable to help it anymore, he asked the question that'd been on his mind for what felt like weeks now. "How is everything?"

At once she pulled a smile onto her face. He could see through it. It was easy to see just how tired she was underneath the smile. "I'm okay," she said, but the way she said it sounded forced. "It's just a mild inconvenience. If even that."

"Kagome…"

She looked so defeated, and it hurt him. It was obvious she was lying.

"This is just something I'm gonna have to learn to live with," she said. It was impossible to ignore the weight in her voice. She sounded so close to breaking. "I-I mean, at this point, what else can I do, John?"

John frowned and shook his head, setting a hand to his hip while he motioned the other out towards the silent girl. "Kagome, this- this isn't like you," he said, his voice soft. "I- I've never seen you like this." As if he was worried getting too loud might startle her. Kagome looked at him and sighed, nodding in agreement.

"I know, I know!" Kagome responded. She turned to hide her face when a familiar sting began to build up in her eyes. She looked for something, anything, to focus on. She inhaled and swiped the blade of the boxcutter down the tape of the box closest to her. A second later, she began to rummage around it, looking for whatever she could to put away in another room just to get out from under John's stare.

John was familiar with her actions, overly so, and he went around to the other side of the table she stood at. Without missing a beat, he took her wrists in his hands to still her movements. He sighed and squeezed her wrists gently as if he was urging her to look at him. She eventually did, and he met her gaze head-on, deep blue meeting bright blue. "Look, Kagome, I want you to listen to me. I mean really listen," he said, giving her a look when she tried to interrupt him. She closed her mouth and nodded, silently telling him to continue. John nodded. "Bloody hell, you've even had to move all the way out here just to try and get away from this guy," he said. As he spoke, he felt angry all the same.

He was angry at the person doing this to her. Kagome was the sweetest thing anyone has ever seen! Why the hell would she attract some loon like this to her?

"What am I supposed to do?" she asked quietly. "I-" she cut herself off and looked down, finding it hard to meet his gaze. "No one can do anything," she added on with a weak sigh. "Police have no luck, detectives have no luck, no one does."

By no one, she definitely meant no one. Even Sesshoumaru, the smartest and strongest being she'd ever encountered had no luck, either. She didn't know what to do outside of leaving the shrine and trying her hardest to put distance between her and whoever this person was.

She exhaled, her entire body shaking as she pulled her hands away from him. She lifted one and placed it over her mouth as she choked out a sob. She stumbled back a few paces as her vision blurred, tears dripping down her cheeks as reality crashed against the heavy emotions she'd been feeling nonstop for what seemed like years at this point.

They'd threatened her friends. They'd threatened her family. They'd threatened her. It seemed as if they knew literally anything and everything about her. Even the things she never shared with anyone. She couldn't take it anymore. She'd moved from her home in hopes it'd keep her family safe.

"J-John, I'm scared," she cried. "I'm so so scared…" Kagome covered her eyes with her hands as she cried. "I-I couldn't take the thought of them hurting mama or Souta anymore! They'll come to find me here, too, I know it."

"Kagome…" John circled around the table and carefully pulled her to his chest, wrapping one arm around her back while he rested his other hand against the back of her head, running his fingers through her messy, dark locks. She choked out a harder sob as he held her, soon enough circling her arms around him and digging her fingers into the back of his shirt. "There, there," he soothed gently.

It hurt him to see her like this. He knew her as a bright girl. He couldn't ever recall a point in time where he'd seen her so scared. Hell, she never openly admitted to being scared before. She was a woman of pride, and she often always was able to put on a brave front. This entire ordeal was stressing her out and turning her into someone else entirely.

He couldn't stand the thought of her living in fear.

It was that desperation to help her that pushed an idea into his brain. For a moment, he contemplated every single option he could come up with in hopes something might be better, to no avail. Resisting the urge to sigh, he carefully pulled away from her, placing both hands on her shoulders and urging her to focus on him. She did, and he swiped his thumbs over her cheeks to brush the tear trails away.

"Maybe no one there could help, but I know someone who can," he said.

"John, I don't need you getting hurt hunting down some-,"

"That's not what I meant," he said, cutting her off before she could finish her exasperated statement. "Although, if you think I'll sit back when this bastard is found, then you've got another thing coming," he said.

"Then who do you mean?" she asked, perking up some in hope when she saw that he was being entirely serious.

"A friend," he said. "He's a detective. Best you'll ever see, I promise you that." Honestly, if it turned out even Sherlock couldn't solve this mess, then he'd be thoroughly surprised. "Bit arrogant, but I have the feeling he'll be all over this one." He'd see it as a challenge the moment he realized how it held the claim of unsolvable.

Kagome nodded, not seeing any reason to argue the idea. "Yeah, sure," she said. "Honestly, it can't go any worse than any other time before,"

John smiled and nodded. He glanced around the room, and his eyes landed on the stacks boxes all over. "Let's put this to the side," he said, talking about their conversation. "Let's get some of the boxes unpacked now" It might not be the best one, but it was a distraction nonetheless. Kagome seemed to get at the reason behind the idea, and she nodded. As she did, a small smile lifted her lips at his attempts to keep her mind focused on something else.

"I know my kettle is somewhere in this mess," she said. "As soon as we find it, I'll get to making some tea for us."

"That sounds great," John said as he reached into the box closest to him. It was full of books he'd never heard of. He turned it over to find the name of the author. "S. Taisho?" he asked out loud. "I've never heard of him." A second later, he looked back at the cover. It was about ancient history, the feudal ages of Japan by the look of it. "Is this a history textbook? Since when were you into this stuff?"

Kagome turned at hearing him, and she approached him. She carefully took the book from him. "He's… um, he's a friend, actually," she said. "That's why I have it."

John had never been told of the events that befell her during her teenage years, so seeing him believe her answer eased her worries some. There were more than a few mentions of her in it- nothing that really gave away to her secrets of time travel, however. Outside of that, it was incredibly accurate to the events back then.

Truthfully, she didn't know if John would make the connection between her and the Kagome mentioned in the book, but she also didn't want to risk it. So, she cradled it to her chest and picked up a few more books before turning on her heel and heading to the bookcase along the wall.

As she stacked them beside each other, she glanced over at John. "Just put all the books over here. I'll organize them later. I have my own system and everything."

C.R: This is a story that's been on my mind for a while. Honestly, protective John and Sherlock over Kagome? *chefs kiss* absolutely beautiful.

There will be other characters from Inuyasha coming in a few chapters. (Mainly Shippo, Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, and Kirara.)

Anyway, that's it for now. Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
