(Before Jaded)
Jade sits in her little beat up car staring at the piece of paper in her hand. She went home the night of her mother's funeral, only to find all of her stuff in the front yard. She gathered what she could, and has been living in her car ever since. She didn't know what to do with herself now.
Jade frowns down at the paper not wanting to accept help from practically a stranger, but she had no choice. Her mother's friend, Edie, had came to her after they buried Momma. Jade remembered meeting her a few times. Edie gave her a piece of paper with her phone number. She had witnessed what Frank had pulled at the funeral and made sure Jade understood to call her as soon as she was able.
Jade had been parked outside of the convenience store for a good thirty minutes now. Another fifteen at the payphone staring at the phone number. With a deep sigh she finally puts the change into the phone and dials the number. It's answered on the second ring.
"Ms Edie? Hi, it's Jade..."

When Jade arrived at the house, she was rushed to the kitchen table. After she sat down, a cup of tea was sat in front of her. Edie sat across from her, a shoebox in front of her. After motioning for her to drink, Edie's opening the box and laying out the contents. Jade glances at them, seeing various pictures of her mom. Edie finds one in particular and lays it in front of Jade, her finger hovered over a man.
"That's your father."
With wide eyes, Jade snatches the picture up. This is where her hazel eyes and dark hair came from. The picture was from their college days, and the man had mop of dark, curly hair and an infectious grin.
Edie's still going through pictures until another one is set in front of Jade. This one a early high school picture taken at home. Jade squints at the picture, it looked the same person, but it didn't. Edie taps the table to get Jade's attention. Edie points at the picture.
"That's his son."
Jade emits a small gasp.
"I have a brother?"
"Yes, the last picture your Momma has of him. And..."
A piece of paper with a Florida address on it was set with the pictures.
"...that's your daddy's last known address. Now honey, I hate to break this to ya, but he passed away a few years ago. That address is a starting point in gettin in touch with your brother. So, now that you have all the information, what're ya gonna do with it?"
"Um..."
Jade was dumbfounded. All she could do was look at the pictures. This was a chance to finally leave, but she'd never been out of the state before let alone the town. Edie sighs at Jade.
"I told Gracie not to coddle you like she did. How old are you now?"
"I just turned 22 last month."
Edie clicks her tongue still shaking her head.
"Full grown woman, but your still a child. It's high time you get outta this hell hole. Here's what ya need to do..."
Edie wrote down everything Jade needed to do, along with how to track down her brother.
"Now, if I were you I'd sell that rust heap to the junkyard before you do anything else. That thing ain't gonna get you to the next county, let alone across state lines. Oh, and here."
Edie's up walking across the kitchen to the sink. She opens the cabinet underneath, pulling out a container of cleaning wipes. Jade watches curiously as she sits back down. It's opened and money rolls out of it. Jade's eyes are wide and she's shaking her head as Edie points at it for her to take.
"Ms Edie! I can't accept this!"
"Baby, it's yours. Your momma asked me to hide the money she put back so that dipshit Frank wouldn't find it. Think of it as your inheritance. Now get washed up, I'm gonna make us some dinner. We'll head into town after, and I'll help you get your affairs in order."
