Chapter 1

It was late in the afternoon as a young woman sat in a chair watching her mother; unfortunately, her mother was in a hospital dying from Aids. She ended up contracting Aids from a blood transfusion she received several years ago. She had been in a terrible car accident and needed blood transfusions to survive. The daughter, whose name was Gina, was seventeen years old and very beautiful. She had long straight brown hair with hints of sun-kissed red in it. Gina had mischievous dark brown eyes that added to her enchanting smile. She had long legs and luscious curves that guys would drop for. The girl usually was quick with a sassy or sarcastic retort and had a fiery attitude about her. However, Gina had no smile, no quick retorts as she sat there holding her mother's hand. Gina noticed how badly her mother's health was deteriorating and how thin she now looked.

Gina's mother, whose name was Maria at one time, was a strikingly beautiful woman who had stunning brown eyes. She was a gorgeous woman, but now the disease had taken its toll on her. Maria's eyes were no longer shining and full of life, but dull and clouded with pain. She was so pale and so deathly thin. She was by no means looking like herself nor had any real resemblance to the once tantalizing beauty she once was.

Gina felt tears stinging in her eyes as she just let them fall one by one down her face. It was just like a dam breaking; she just broke down, letting the tears constantly fall down her face as she watched her mother lying in that bed. Gina reached down and caressed her mother's face as her tears fell onto the bed. Maria opened her eyes, her gaze focused on her daughter. She forced a weak smile and started to talk to Gina very weakly. "I love you so much, Gina; you have grown into a beautiful young woman," Maria said as Gina's father Al walked into her mother's hospital room.

"I'm here to see your mother, Gina. Would you give us some time alone, please?" Al asked as Gina nodded and got up, and walked out of the hospital room.

However, as she walked down the hallway down toward the waiting room, Gina ran into Frank, her father's close friend. "Gina, how's your mom?" Frank asked Gina as she sighed softly.

"The same as she was the last time you asked me that question, Frank." she snapped, sitting down on a chair and crossing her long shapely legs.

Frank narrowed his eyes at Gina and merely shook his head at her in annoyance.

Meanwhile, in Maria's hospital room, Al was getting a serious shock of his life.

"Al, I need for you to do me a favor, please," Maria said in such a weak voice.

"Just name it, and I'll do it," Al said.

"I need for you to promise me you will take care of Gina when I am gone," she said as tears rolled down her face as she saw the expression on her ex-husband's face and knew he was about to argue the fact with her.

"Maria, I can't have her in the mansion, and you know it and know why!" he said sternly and angrily.

However, it did not go over too well with the sickly woman he was once married to.

"She will have no one, Al; please, I need to know she will be cared for," Maria said in an urgent tone of voice, but also it was getting weaker by the moment. "Don't punish her for our problems," Maria begged.

Al stood stewing in silence as Maria watched Al very carefully.

"Okay, okay, okay; you win, I'll take her in." Al finally said as Maria smiled softly.

"Good, now I know she is taken care of," Maria whispered as she suddenly looked like a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

Maria closed her eyes, suddenly shocking Al as he realized what had just happened.

"Maria?"

There was no answer, complete and utter silence, and no response at all. Al jumped up and hurried to call for help as Gina glanced up, seeing all the commotion. She got up and hurried over to her mother's room, followed by Frank.

"No, Gina, don't come in," Al said as Gina saw her mom just lying there with her eyes closed and not breathing or responding to anything the doctors and nurses did.

Gina suddenly felt her world crashing in on her, and the floor felt shaky. She was aware that someone had their arms on her, steadying her. She didn't realize it was Frank who was trying to keep her on her feet.

"No, mom, please, you can't leave me!" Gina screamed as she realized with horror what had just happened and passed out cold in Frank's arms.

It was an hour or so later; however, Gina was barely with it as Al had his limo driver stop by Maria's house so they could pick up her things. Al had called for a u-haul to come with boxes to pack up Gina's other things to be brought to the mansion. Al found some of Gina's duffel bags and pack as much of her clothes as he could. He then threw a few of her books and other things to make her feel at home in his mansion. "Okay, that's all; for now, the U-haul will be here later on to pick up the rest, and I will figure out what to do with all Maria's things later on," Al said.

Frank glanced down at Gina and knew she was beyond upset and merely shook his head. "She and her mother were extremely close, weren't they?" Frank asked.

Al wasn't sure how to answer that question. He knew the truth that Gina loved her mother a great deal, but maybe just maybe the truth was Al was just a little jealous of their closeness. He wasn't about to tell Frank that; however, that was a big mistake in his line of work.

"Yeah, they were very close, more close than usual Maria and Gina were like best friends as well. Gina could go to Maria about anything and talk about anything. They talked about boys; they went places did things together. I hardly ever saw my daughter; I was raising my sons to come into the business. I guess you could say I just don't even know my daughter very much." Al said as Frank listened. "Then, after the divorce, Gina went with Maria, and the boys came with me. I think the divorce was harder on Maria and Gina than me; I just had no use for a tag about daughter or nagging wife who couldn't stand the business. She can't say I ever cheated on her, though, because I didn't, and I had plenty of chances to, but I stayed true to her that way." Al said as no one noticed Gina wide awake, listening in as tears fell down her lovely face.

…..

It was an ice-cold rainy morning as family and friends stood in the rain watching as a coffin was lowered into the ground. Gina stood staring in a trance at the coffin with tears in her eyes as her mascara streaked down her face. Gina glanced over at her father and was taken aback by the fact he was not crying. Gina was annoyed but remained silent. It was apparent after the funeral Gina was desperately upset and deeply troubled.

"We're going back to the mansion, Gina," Al said as they were heading toward a sleek dark-tinted on the windows of a black limo.

Several hours later,

Gina was outside; she was not going to be cooped up inside, nor did she want to be around her father's friends. She did not like this arrangement, nor did she like always being told what she could do. She especially didn't like being told who she could date or what was acceptable and what wasn't. She couldn't understand why she couldn't just get a job and have an apartment and a roommate. She sighed, knowing full well her father would never have any of that. He was so strict and wanted things done his way. The one thing she was glad about was that her father never learned her secret about building cars; she was more at home at building cars than anything else. However, this particular car she built was special; she could program the car to talk and called her Sadie. Sadie became Gina's best friend, especially when things got bad at home with her father.

Gina built Sadie because of being a huge fan of the Transformers movies; sadly, Sadie couldn't transform. However, Gina had a secret crush on Optimus Prime, and this was just her way of making her own Autobot.

Frank had come outside and watched her tinkering with Sadie, and his eyes narrowed into a tight frown. He never understood why someone like Gina would be so interested in cars; she was covered in grease all the time.

"Why are you consistently out here messing with that vehicle, Gina; you're supposed to be a girl; what is wrong with you?" Frank demanded as Gina glanced over at Frank, her annoyance and anger surging through her veins like hot lava.

"I enjoy working on cars, so don't be all stupid and try to tell me what to do." Gina snapped.

"Gina, don't mouth off to me; it's not an acceptable thing to do," Frank said as he went to grab her arm, but Gina blocked his efforts, which surprised Frank at her fast reflexes.

"Yeah, right, whatever, Frank," she mumbled as she headed back into the mansion for something to drink as Al came out to speak with Frank.

"She hasn't been here that long, and she already is annoying me and is trying my patience," Al said as Frank smirked slightly.

Al glanced at the vehicle, and his beady little brown eyes narrowed into slits.

"Why must she always be into such boyish things; she is a girl for crying out loud," Al remarked.

"I said the same thing in a roundabout way to her; she had to be sarcastic, of course," Frank said.

"Of course, she did; that mouth is going to be a problem. I see she couldn't be a model daughter; who wouldn't give me any problems." Al said.

"You could set her up with someone who could say keep her in line for you?" Frank said.

Al glanced over at his second in command, and he raised an eyebrow at the suggestion he had. "Oh really, and who would you suggest for such a task?" Al asked.

"DeMarko's son," Frank said.

Al thought about Frank's suggestion, and his expression turned thoughtful.

"That is a very good idea, Frank; I could have her married off and out of my hair," Al said as he had no idea that Sadie was listening in and recording everything Gina's father and Frank said.

"Let's go in and call him; this could be very profitable for the family too," Al added as they headed into the mansion.

"Jerks," Sadie hissed.

Meanwhile, Gina was in her bedroom and had changed into tight blue jeans and a very sexy top. Frank and Al came upstairs and within minutes were in his study. Gina knew for years what her father was and did for a living. He was a powerful mafia don, and Frank was not just his best friend but his ruthless enforcer. It was clear both men were devious and ruthless, doing anything to gain more and more power.

Gina was on her computer reading e-mail and e-cards from people sending their sympathies to her and the family. Gina sighed as she read each card and letter until finally, it was like a flood of emotions hit her suddenly. She couldn't stop the emotions and didn't want to stop her emotions either. She missed her mother and would for the rest of her life. For her life, Gina couldn't understand why her father wanted her living there; when her parents got divorced, it was apparent he wanted nothing to do with his daughter, only her brothers. Because it was apparent boys to him were much better than girls like sons were gold or something. Well, Gina intended to leave one way or another; she was not a kid and wanted to live her own life and make her own mistakes and choices in life. But somehow, Gina didn't see that happening unless she, of course, helped the situation along some.

Gina went downstairs; and headed back out the door toward Sadie. Sadie flashed her lights, alerting Gina she wanted to talk. So, Gina got inside of her car and closed the door; and started to talk to her friend.

"Hey Sadie, what's up?" Gina asked.

"Well, for one thing, your father and his buddy are at it again; he is planning on setting you up with one of his friend's sons," Sadie said as she played back the recorded talk, which angered Gina to no end.

"This is the last straw. I have had it here. I know my mom meant well, but I am not staying here." Gina said.

"Maybe you should talk to your father's maid; she likes you and might be able to give you some ideas," Sadie said.

"Alright, sounds like a plan," Gina said as she headed out and back into the mansion to find Maggie; but ended up getting sidetracked for a bit.

God, how she hated living in this place; it was living in prison.

Sadie picked up on Gina's father heading out of the mansion and heading straight for Gina.

"Don't look now, but the king has decided to grace his royal people." Sadie snarked as Gina tried to keep her laughter down.

"Gina, we are going to your old house. I will need help taking care of your mother's things," he remarked.

Gina did not look amused at that; her smile vanished all but off her face completely. It was replaced with a scowl and narrowed eyes.

"It hasn't been that long, dad; jeez." Gina protested.

Al rolled his eyes and turned back toward his daughter.

"Why must you always do this when I ask you to do something?" Al demanded.

"Because mom hasn't been gone that long, dad," Gina remarked as she added in such a bitter tone of voice. "Jeez, why can't you wait a while before you dump her stuff like she didn't exist?" Gina yelled.

"Do not take that tone with me, Gina; I am your father." Al retorted.

"I know all about it, dad," Gina said as she reached inside Sadie; and grabbed her cell phone and slid it into her back pocket of her jeans. "I know already go get into the limo; I am going, dad," Gina said as Frank walked up toward Al.

"We are going to Maria's. I hired someone to help with removing her things; I figured Gina would want to go to keep some things that were her mother's." Al said as Frank nodded and followed Al into the limo

They headed to the house, and Gina headed for her old bedroom to ensure there was nothing else she needed. Gina stopped at the family room; she bent toward a family picture of her parents and brothers. She could feel tears rush into her eyes; this picture was during happy times as a family. She sighed as she put the picture into a box, going with her back to her father's mansion.

Meanwhile, Al and Frank were in his ex-wife's closet in her bedroom; they emptied her things to give to Goodwill. However, as they were going through things, something caught Al's eye in the back of the closet. He headed over to it and moved clothes out of the way only to find a locked door.

"What the hell is this?" Al demanded. "Frank, come here," he ordered as Frank walked in.

"Everything alright, Al," Frank asked.

"No, it most certainly isn't alright," Al remarked. "Have you ever seen this before?" Al asked as he pointed toward the locked door.

"No, I haven't. Did you ask your daughter?" Frank asked.

"No, but I intend to do just that," he answered.

Al turned toward Frank as he puffed on a cigar; his beady little eyes narrowed as he did just that. "Gina, get in here, now!" Al yelled as she appeared in the closet in a matter of moments.

"You bellowed, dad," she said.

"Don't mouth off, Gina," Al remarked.

"Wouldn't dream of it, dad." she snapped.

"What's this?" Al asked as he pointed toward the locked door in the back of the closet, which Gina turned to look at.

"I have no clue, dad; I never saw that door before, and I was in mom's closet a lot," Gina said as she walked closer toward it. "Did you find a key?" she asked.

"Your father doesn't need a key; I will get it open," Frank said.

Once they could get the door unlocked, Frank's way; they all went inside, and Gina was amazed at what they found.

"Whoa, I never knew she had this extra room; it's kind of cool," Gina replied.

"It's not cool; she kept secrets from me, obviously," Al said as Gina rolled her eyes.

"Like you never kept secrets, dad," Gina snapped at him.

Al ignored the snippy comeback as he looked around the room. They found many confusing things, mostly because there were weapons, and the main weapons were fancy swords.

"Wow," Gina whispered as she felt compelled to touch the one sword.

However, when she touched it, her bracelet she wore glowed brightly; and the second it did, she moved her hand away as if she had been burned. She turned her head toward where her father and Frank were. They didn't seem to notice what she was doing at all, and she smiled and kept her investigation up.

She found a book that held an envelope addressed to her; she gently reached for it, her fingers taking hold of the envelope. She opened the envelope and read the note, which was written by her mother.

"What the hell is this place she had?" Al mumbled as he and Frank kept looking around.

Gina ignored her father as she read the letter from her mother.

My dearest,

If you're reading this letter, it means you've found my secret room; but it also means I am gone for now but will return. I wish I could tell you about your destiny in person, but alas, I cannot do that. I was a guardian to someone otherworldly once; now it is your turn. You possess a special bracelet never take it off, Gina; and you will need to take the sword with you. The one which made your bracelet glow; do not let Al see you take it. The sword will shrink if you command it too; all you need to do is touch it and say SHRINK. You, dear, have a special destiny; you are the last of the guardians to a special warrior and leader. You must take Sadie and sword and leave your father now; Maggie will help you. I love you! Tell no one who you are; remember that dear one. You are more special than even you realize.

Till all are one,

Maria

Gina stared at the letter; why didn't she sign the letter as her mother, and what did she mean by Guardian? She slipped the letter into the pocket of her jeans. And to her relief, her father and Frank were not watching her. She walked silently over to the sword and touched it, and whispered.

Although some things in her letter made no sense, she figured maybe just maybe Sadie would know.

"Shrink," and to her amazement, it did shrink! She quickly hid it with the other stuff she had with her. "Dad, I have to go to the bathroom," Gina said as she quickly left the room, never allowing her father to say anything.

She quickly headed into the other room; and placed all the stuff she was taking back to her dad's mansion in the box. She saw her father and Frank come out a bit later; her father eyed her then.

"Did you get what you wanted, Gina?" Al asked her.

"Yes, dad, I did," Gina said.

"Alright, let's go, then I made a call, and the Goodwill is picking up everything else," Al stated as Gina nodded.

"Alright, dad," she said as she carried the box out to the limo with the treasures inside.

Gina had to figure out just what was going on; because things were getting really freaky.
