Chapter 1: New Beginnings

A twig snapped as the hulking beast beside the man crouching by the tree shifted. The man slowly turned his head to glare at him, who looked as sheepish as a 10-foot tall Tyranitar could be. They both looked back out at the small clearing and sighed in relief when they saw that the female Tyranitar, staring intently at an egg, had not noticed them.

The sounds of an egg cracking filled the air. The sounds of heavy wind and an other-worldly wail filled the air.

His head snapped back to the clearing, in horror. A long reptilian body came slithering out of a wormhole hanging over the clearing. 'No.' said the man in horror. 'No, no, no! Really?! Why now! You had two effing months of doing nothing and now is when you decide to pop by! '

The mother roared and released a dark pulse at the creature who let out an affronted screech and dived in, unleashing a wave of purple sludge at the Tyranitar who took the wave head-on and shrugged it off. The creature floated upwards, bemused that its attack had been ignored.

The Tyranitar took a step back and grunted, causing a series of spikes to erupt from the ground towards the creature hitting it right on its long sting-like projection. Sand started trickling from between the rocks, swirling around them in an incredible show of power.

The man crouched, even more, calling out his pokemon from its Pokeball. Pikachu came out in a flash of light. He looked around confused as to why they weren't back at the cabin. Tyranitar hadn't let him bring any of his pokemon along except for Pikachu. 'I want you to get in and get that Larvitar out.' said the Human, clearly. 'But, do not, on any account, get seen by the mother, at this point she'll probably try to murder ya.' Pikachu deadpanned and slapped the trainer with his tail as he jumped into the fray.

Both the Tyranitars roared in unison at the intruder. The creature looked at the Trainer's Tyranitar and went wild, zooming in at a very high speed. He was waiting for it. 'Hyper Beam!' The creature tanked the hit and bulldozed its way through it. 'Outrage. Finish it.' commanded the man, hoping it would finish the job. Tyranitar's eyes visibly glowed. His entire body exuded wisps of red energy. He reared back and swiped at the beast, punching and mauling it with the express objective that it stayed down. The creature cried out in pain, visibly shuddered in rage and agony. It started to slip into unconsciousness but managed to mark Tyranitar with a parting Fell Stinger. Tyranitar took the blow and howled in pain.

The whole clearing was quiet. Pikachu nudged the man and rolled the egg to him. The Pokemon Trainer glanced down. So it didn't hatch after all. The crack must have been from the wormhole. Wait. He looked about in horror. Wormholes do not make that noise. He turned to scream out to Tyranitar before he felt a breeze rush by his ear and a flash of white. Then all he knew was darkness.

Ash Ketchum was having a bad day. Of all the bad days in the universe, he was sure that this had to be the crappiest one. The start of his journey was supposed to be a wonderful thing. It was the day he was supposed to get his starter, the one pokemon that would be his life-long friend and partner.

He kicked a stone down the hill moodily, wincing when it hit Icarus, Professor Oak's sleeping Charizard, only to deadpan when it did not even notice. And that was the chief source of his displeasure. Among the three starters Professor Oak gave out every year, Charmander was his absolute favorite. It was what he wanted all his life. He had initially joined the Lab so that he could spend time with all the cool Pokemon Professor Oak had. It had then turned into working all of his extra time at the Lab, trying to learn more about Pokemon in general. He even got to handle all the baby dragons the professor received for his research, one summer, which the other researchers did not want to. It worked out well for everyone. Oak got what he wanted and he-

In a perfect world, he would have gone down to the Lab, along with the other two children who received the highest grades that year, in this case, Gary Oak and Elaine. He would have been among them waiting for his starter. He would have selected his Charmander and been the happiest teen on earth. There was one tiny snag in this plan.

There was no Charmander this year. The Charicific valley had refused to send a Charmander citing lack of security on the way over, due to Team Rocket's thievery being at an all-time high. The only way they could is if someone flew over and the caretaker, Liza, simply did not have the time for that. Professor Oak had spoken to one of his contacts and gotten a Cyndaquil instead.

Ash clambered over the wall and dropped into the lawn. He stealthily crept over the sakura tree growing beside their home and lept on to it. The leaves were a beautiful shade of yellow, with a touch of pink on the inside. His father told her that the flowers reminded him of both of them. Ash had rolled his eyes, in private, and thought that his father was full of it.

He reached onto the last branch and prepared to hoist himself into his room when he felt a sudden gust of wind, threatening to throw him down. Startled, he looked up to find a Charizard land with a thud in the middle of the corral.

Later, he would deny that his exhilaration at his father coming home, and that he pumped his arms in celebration, were the reasons why he ended up smack dab on the front lawn.
